Yes there are people who are so good at hand expressing that they do not need pumps. However, most people are not that good. Learning how to hand express is very useful coz if you use hand, you can get the last bit of milk out after pumping. But if you are going to use hand 2-3 times a day when you are at work (think 2-3 times of 10-15 mins per breast = 20-30 mins), can you take it.
Even if you are stay at home mum, a pump is still quite required as your child may drop the night feeds, etc but if you follow suit too fast, your supply may drop. There are also times when your child drinks less, leaving the milk in your breast may result in decreased supply and blocked ducts. And for those with over-supply, leaving the milk in your breast may result in blocked ducts.
