Mid-Autumn 2024: 5 Fun Activities for Families this Festival Season

Mid-Autumn 2024 falls on Tuesday 17 September, on the 15th day of the eighth Lunar month. Traditionally, “Zhong Qiu Jie” was celebrated as a harvest festival to thank the gods, or to worship the moon. These days, we celebrate by enjoying mooncakes with family and friends, playing with lanterns and sparklers, and enjoying light-ups and festivities islandwide. Mid-Autumn Family Fun at SCCC

It’s a giant mooncake takeover at the SCCC and everyone is welcome to grab a bite of the action! Co-organised by Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) and Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO), this year’s event features 21 exciting family-friendly activities, from a dramatic retelling of traditional folklore, to a concert of music related to the Mid-Autumn Festival, and even a parent-child guzheng workshop.

Join in the lantern walk, pick up freebies such as mooncake sponges, and redeem gifts by completing a stamp card at game booths.

The Race Around The Moon

Following the success of its 2023 English staging, The Race Around The Moon returns, now performed in Mandarin! Go on an unforgettable journey through the classic tales of Chang’e, Jade Rabbit, and Wu Gang in this fun, interactive play that’s tailored for children aged around 5 to 10 years, as they explore whether true success lies in winning, or in the enduing bonds of friendship. This relaxed performance is suitable for neurodivergent individuals, including those on the autism spectrum, and a designated calm room will be provided. The show is also accessible to wheelchair users and individuals with mobility restrictions

Mid-Autumn Festival at Gardens by the Bay

Nine intricately designed lantern sets bring nighttime glow to Gardens by the Bay this Mid-Autumn. Marvel at local illustrator Ah Guo’s creation, a stunning 20m-long, 6m-tall floating lantern on Dragonfly Lake, take a stroll along a 60m-long five-foot way of traditional shop fronts, and marvel at the Gardens’ largest Flower Carpet to date.

Depicting the iconic dragon playground, this horticultural stunner which spans about the length of two tennis courts was created with 75,000 plants! Admission is free

Wan Qing Closing Fest

Before the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall closes on 16 September for restoration works, come by for the national monument’s closing festival, and its popular Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival. Kickstart the celebrations with the hall’s largest ever outdoor lantern installation, Moonlit Legends, which transforms the Memorial Hall into a celestial wonderland featuring the elegant moon goddess Chang’e, the immortal woodcutter Wu Gang, and lovable jade rabbits. Go on a mystery puzzle adventure, dress up in hanfu (Chinese traditional wear), enjoy drop-in craft stations, performances on the lawn and a festive food fair.

Lights by the Lake

Exquisite lantern displays, a concert of Moonlit Melodies’, cultural showcases, movie screenings, lantern riddles, carnival games, food, and other mid-autumn delights await visitors of all ages here this season. Don’t miss the ever-popular floating lanterns on the waters, and keep an eye out for new origami-inspired designs as well!

Chinatown Lantern Walk

Stroll with your lantern and bask in the Mid-Autumn spirit along streets illuminated by dazzling light-up displays. The walk starts from Chinatown Point and ends at Kreta Ayer Square. Once here, families can enjoy stage performances and guess lantern riddles on digital lanterns. No lantern? It’s okay. Participants get a goodie bag containing a cellophane lantern and delectable traditional Mid-Autumn snacks as well.
