Project Dreamcatchers 2024: ‘Fall, Cry, Grow, Smile…We Soar’

Sherri and her dance partner, Keanan Lim, with Dr Vivian Balakrishnan. Dreamcatcher Sherri Lim lost most of her vision to a congenital eye disorder, and is racing against time to explore different artistic pursuits before her remaining vision fades. She put up a contemporary dance performance at the exhibition’s launch despite her visual impairment and lack of a dance background. “I hope I can motivate people with disability to chase their dreams,” she said.

See how 18 young people living with childhood chronic illnesses, the “Dreamcatchers” in this project, turn adversity into creativity with their evocative works spanning photography, installations, and the performing arts. This arts in health initiative by the Department of Paediatrics, Khoo Teck Puat – National University Children’s Medical Institute (KTP-NUCMI), National University Hospital (NUH) — is part of the National Gallery Singapore’s Gallery Wellness Special 2024: Your Canvas.

Till 21 July, National Gallery Singapore, City Hall Wing, Level 1, Opposite Keppel Centre for Art Education. Admission is free for all. See more here.

The Invisible Pangolin

The values of empathy, understanding, and resilience are key in this empowering play that follows an introverted Sunda Pangolin as she navigates school anxieties and her fear of being seen. Best for children aged 5 to 8, this hour-long Gateway Theatre production also showcases animals that are native to Singapore. Children will walk away knowing more about friendship, being inclusive, how to say “no” in an uncomfortable situation, and how to give space to a friend who says “no”.

27 July at 11am, 2pm and 5pm, and 28 July at 11am and 2pm. Blackbox, Gateway Theatre. Tickets and further details here.

Titoudao

First performed in 1994, the life story of Wayang (Chinese street opera) practitioner Mdm. Oon Ah Chiam, set against the backdrop of Singapore’s growth, continues to compel. Written and directed by her son, playwright and director, Goh Boon Teck, this 30th anniversary iteration features entirely new staging, costumes, and a brand-new cast, including musician Zhuang Hai Ning who will be performing live during the show. Tan Rui Shan, best known for her role as Mrs Lee Kuan Yew in Toy Factory’s Kwa Geok Choo in 2022, portrays the titular character.

5 to 28 July, 3pm & 8pm, at the Victoria Theatre (11 Empress Pl, #01-02, Singapore 179558). Tickets are available at Sistic.

SHOP

Anker MagGo Series

It was just reported that more than nine in 10 Singapore residents consider a smartphone with a data plan essential. What’s also essential? Keeping that device charged so you can go about your daily life without interruption. Now here’s the good news. If you use an Apple ecosystem, Anker’s new MagGo devices can help with that.

Among the first to receive Qi2 certification from the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), these offer 15-watt fast wireless charging, and are compatible with Apple’s MagSafe technology.

When it comes to simple phone charging and portability, the MagGo Power Bank (image above) can’t be beat. In addition, it comes with a kickstand that keeps your iPhone (12/13/14/15) upright for comfortable viewing. The 10,000mAh version also has an LCD screen to display real-time battery stats.

For travellers who want minimise packing and maximise connections, the Foldable 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Station is ideal. Compact as a pack of cards when folded and weighing less than 200g, it can power up your iPhone, Apple Watch, and wireless earbuds simultaneously.

The 3-in-1 Cube with MagSafe does the same, with a novel push-out stand for watch charging. At slightly over 300g it is light enough to toss into a carry-on, or handy on a space-challenged desk at work. What’s more, the cube structure is really cool.

At home though, I’d opt for the Wireless Charger (Stand). Functional aesthetics make this a winning combination, and its sleek, tree-like structure adds a touch of design luxe to any table or nightstand.

Available online and at official Anker stores on Lazada and Shopee. Shop at Anker’s first Pop Up Store from 22 to 28 July 2024, 10.30am–9.30pm, at Suntec City, for 15% off deals and interactive games with gifts.

EAT

1-Flowerhill

Could this be the prettiest place to have a meal in Sentosa? We think so, and it’s swooningly enchanting too. Housed in a century-old conservation building surrounded by greenery and decorated with swathes of flowers in shades of pink, 1-Flowerhill encapsulates three unique F&B concepts: Wildseed Café, Wildseed Bar & Grill, and French-Japanese restaurant Camille. Come for brunch, lunch, and high tea at the pet-friendly Grand Terrace that overlooks Sentosa Sensoryscape, unwind over hand-crafted cocktails and melt-in-your-mouth grills like the Barbecue Iberico Pork Rib ‘Charsiew’s style as the sun sets, and indulge for a special occasion upstairs at the elegantly designed Camille.

6 Imbiah Rd. Wildseed Café: 10am – 5pm (Mondays to Fridays), 9am – 5pm (Saturdays, Sundays & Eve of PHs) | Wildseed Bar & Grill: 5pm – 10pm (Mondays to Thursdays, & Sunday); 5pm – 12am (Fridays & Saturdays) | Camille: 6pm to 10pm (Tuesdays to Sundays), closed on Mondays. Get more details here.

Little Island Brewing Co

With a bouncy castle, mini ride-on Vespas, and lots of space for kids (and fur kids) to romp around, Little Island Brewing Co’s (LIBC) Changi Village outlet is a family-friendly retreat that Eastsiders in SIngapore love. But it’s worth travelling here even if you don’t stay in the East, as LIBC has relaunched its exclusive Beer ATM, a pull-what-you-want bar of house-brewed beer, cocktails, and mocktails, so you can do a taste test of different brews before committing to a full pint (we recommend the Sister Golden Ale which strikes a perfect balance between maltiness and bitterness). Food-wise, there’s a magnificent Sunday Roast that’ll fill big and small tums, as well as kids’ faves, woodfired sourdough pizzas, and succulent meats. And oh, don’t be surprised if the smoky, crispy, chargrilled cabbage has little ones asking for more veggies!

6 Changi Village Rd, #01-01/02. 3pm – 10pm (Tuesdays to Thursdays); 12pm – 12am (Fridays & Saturdays); 12pm – 10pm (Sundays). Closed on Mondays. See more here.

Gourmet Park Kampong Bugis Pop-up

Tucked away in an enclave just minutes away from the central area, this foodie hideaway along the Kallang River park connector brings together five homegrown F&B brands in an idyllic, kid- and pet-friendly haven. Conceived by the folks behind The Goodburger and Gourmet Park RWS, you can expect to find similarly easy-to-eat favourites such as British-inspired breakfast and brunch staples by Carnaby, plant-based burgers by Goodburger, modern Neapolitan-style pizzas and pastas by Quattro, smoked BBQ dishes by Meatsmith, and decadent homemade brownies by Backyard Bakers. We saw families with little ones, couples, families with pets, and groups of friends while we were here, and everyone had such a happy vibe! GPKB is only here till end-December 2024 so pop by soon, ‘cos we’re pretty sure you’ll want to come back again.

66 Kampong Bugis. Open till end-December 2024. 12pm – 9pm (Wednesdays & Thursdays); 12pm – 10pm (Fridays); 8am – 10pm (Saturdays); 8am – 9pm (Sundays & PHs). Find out more here.
