Hotel G Singapore — 8 ways we love this Small but Swell Staycation Spot (review + giveaway)
Hotel G Singapore is like a chinese puzzle box. It’s right in front of you, but there’s no sign of the hotel entrance. But once you’ve unlocked the way in, you enter an Aladdin’s cave of visual and sensory delights truly befitting of a property which rubs shoulders with what used to be one of Singapore’s most infamous nightlife haunts, Bugis Street.
Indeed, the rooms may be small, but location is one of this 308-room property’s biggest assets. While its boogie nights may be over, the Bugis area remains a hotspot for visitors, local and otherwise. Being walking distance from two MRT stations (Bugis, and Bencoolen) means going out and about is a breeze.
Nevertheless you don’t have to venture far from Hotel G to see, taste, and experience a smorgasbord of sensory delights, from art and design to food, specialty coffee, and entertainment. And that’s just one of the reasons why we love Hotel G for a short and sweet staycation.
#1 Sensory Treats Everywhere
Hotel G is a feast for the senses, from the surreal Magritte-inspired artwork at reception, to the hotel’s own Spotify playlist that greets you as you enter your room. Graphic doodles deck every corridor, reflecting the skyline of the city. In addition, each floor has its own ice and water dispenser station to fuel your thirst 24/7.
#2 Turn on, Stay in
Often, on staycation, we want to veg out and do the same things we do at home, just in a different space. Right? At first glance the 11-13 sqm entry level Good Rooms at Hotel G may not seem conducive to fulfilling that mission. But they are.
As in a tiny home, space efficiency is maximised to house every creature comfort. A hollow cuboid under the bed serves as luggage storage. A miniscule sink along the entryway frees up the bathroom blueprint for a decently-sized toilet and shower cubicle. Wall hooks hold bags which reveal a hair dryer, and bathroom slippers. In lieu of a cupboard there is a rack with hangers.
A wooden table and a mid-century inspired chair add to the room’s photogenic profile. The Wi-Fi works well, and there are sufficient plug and USB points. A cork board on the wall cleverly uses vertical real estate to replace bulky folders for information about hotel amenities.
Coffee and tea making tools perch on a corner shelf above the table, together with environmentally-friendly G-branded boxed water. We hear that the hotel partners with social enterprise Soap Cycling Singapore, which recycles used soap to produce clean soap for disadvantaged communities.
In keeping with the environmental focus, bathroom amenities from Metis Skin come in biodegradable or recycled packaging. We love how they fragrance the room with scents of lavender, bergamot, and geranium.
With minimal floor space the one place you end up most in is the bed. Lie back and watch the dreamcatcher cast intriguing shadows on the walls and its trendy, arty pictures. With the TV above your feet and the side wall within touching distance, it feels as if you are being cocooned in a cave of treasures.
Honestly, it’s perfect for date-cations where you don’t need anything but the one who makes your heart beat a little faster, your grid a little more colourful. And when you’ve satiated all senses inside, get ready to savour a plethora of sights, sounds, and tastes outside.
#3 Ginett Restaurant & Wine Bar
Lushly glamorous, French restaurant Ginett Restaurant & Wine Bar is perfect for date night, or a girl’s night out. My date is a foot shorter than me, and hogs the butter and the fresh-out-of-the-oven bread. Despite that, I adore him. We share a mini platter of cold cuts, and appetisers, including the best creamed spinach I’ve ever tasted. If you like shellfish, drop in this month for freshly-flown Bouchot French mussels and give in to the decadance of these plump flesh, melt-in-mouth mussels.
#4 25 Degrees Burgers & Liquor Bar
Hotel G’s other eatery is 25 Degrees Burgers & Liquor Bar. A Hollywood transplant, this offers classic American comfort food like burgers, hot dogs, milkshakes, and all-day breakfasts. Book the #BurgersInBed offer and get a complimentary ‘It Takes Two’ box. This comes with a choice of two signature burgers and one side delivered to your room. Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or lunch in bed — and you don’t have to worry about accidental ketchup spillage either!
#5 Good Food in Every Direction
Across the road is Fortune Centre, one of the best places to find vegetarian and vegan eats in Singapore. Two blocks down is Mellower Coffee, where you’ll find the highly instagrammable ‘Sweet Little Rain’ — coffee with a ‘cloud’ of cotton candy above it. Cross another road, and you can travel the gastro globe for modern Middle Eastern fare at Artichoke, and Japanese bowls at Tanuki Raw. Also nearby, social enterprise cafe Crossings serves up delectable Asian and Western fare, as well as beers brewed by Trappist monks!

#6 Doorstep Heritage
Culture vultures: the Singapore Art Museum, the National Design Centre, and non-profit arts space Objectifs are just steps away. Walk another 10 minutes to arrive at the National Museum and behind it, Fort Canning Park.
For a dose of heritage, soak in the colourful sight of devotees making their offerings at the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho temple. Built in 1884, this is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Singapore.
Don’t be surprised to see the same devotees sticking joss sticks into the urn outside the adjacent Sri Krishnan Temple. After all, every deity is fair game when it comes to hopes for the fulfilment of prayers. Need some guidance in life? Ask a bird (the feathered variety) to pick your fortune, or seek succour from the Chinese Goddess of Mercy Guan Yin.
#7 Murals!
Still going strong? Head down to 51 Waterloo street to feed your ‘Gram with heritage murals by local artists Yip Yew Chong and Yuen Kum Cheong. Located at the former Catholic High School building, these interactive murals evoke nostalgic memories of the Bras Basah precinct.

Finally, Hotel G is also walking distance to the Central Library, but you don’t have to leave the room to have reading material.
