What Primary School is good

Does primary school really play a major part. What if I send my child to a normal neighbourhood school instead of a good school but supplement with enrichment classes.
I am considering volunteering at Henry Park but heard comments that the standard is going down.Any comments.

Frankly I feel that Primary School DOES play a MAJOR part in a child's life.

Parents should not focus only on academic, but rather, on Moral values, and character-building.

And of course, as in all schools, standards tend to vary, and also, there's tend to be at least a few 'bad sheeps' here and there.

At the end of the day, I feel that Parents should be comfortable with the choice of their schools as an all-rounder (academic, moral-values, character-building etc).
That is the reason why most good schools fall into this category, and there's why the standard is higher and more difficult to get in.

Don't think enrichment class will help much, coz considering the amt of time the child spend in school (at least 6 hours a day, 30 hours a week) as compared to enrichment class (2 hours a week). The influence, and time is definitely a lot different.

Moreover to think of it, you can still influence ur child when he is in primary school. By the time they reach secondary school, peer pressure will be their number 1 influence, and parents can only stand one side and very little influence already.... I feel that's the kind of culture now.... and it may get worst in future considering how kids are getting smarter and smarter these days!

I myself was from a neighborhood school and went to RGS. I think the exposure at being a normal school was good rather than being a small fish in a big pond where I would have just been an ordinary student amongst all the bright sparks.

Have anyone do voluntary work in school?

Can brief my child in detail how to go about doing it? Is it 100% confirmed that my child can get a placement in school?

My gal going Pri sch in yr 2013, do i need to do any voluntary work? Im moving to Punggol next yr, would like to kn any good school around?

How about in Queenstown? Any schools to recommend? Is it cruel to send my son to a school in bukit timah, Pei Hwa, to be exact if I stay in queenstown?
quite far n long travelling time.

First born,

Queenstown to bukit timah is a very long distance to travel for a young child, and I feel kids shld not be spending so much time on traveling as it tires them out in the long run. A tired child will fall sick easily, and good health will be compromised. Most importantly, yr child must be happy going to school. Why do you want to consider sending yr child to a school that is so far away from home?

Hi parents/ kids,

Any advice on which primary school is better between Maris Stella High or St Andrew's Junior? How abt Cedar Primary which is a co-ed school?

When registering, are we allowed to choose only one primary school or a few?

Thanks!

Anyone send child to a sch in the north wen u r staying in the east?

how abt if stay 2.4km or nearer to the school? Any priority in enroling? Under which phrase?

Am a primary School teacher and also was a tutor. I believe a lot in choosing school based on your child's ability.

I used to tutor this boy from a very good school in the west. It is one of the better schools but cos the boy is rather weak in his studies, he is always lacking behind and is always at the last class. A school is perceived as being good cos of the good PSLE results they produced. But for me, i think a good school shd be one which is able to pull these weak students up cos the brighter ones are already bright. so it's of no wonder that they scored high. In the end, this pupil of mine had so much difficulties in his studies as the school focused much on the better pupils and left the weaker ones behind. So, it dampened his morale and he had absolutely no motivation to study.

I had another 2 more pupils who were and are very bright. they were from neighbourhood schools. They did very well for the GEP screening test and were offered the prog. Hence, they changed to the branded schools to continue their studies.

Tho much said, I still believe pri sch is very impt as it moulds the foundation. The environment is very impt and the teachers are extremely crucial.

To me, if my child has the ability, perhaps i would want to consider putting him in a school which is affiliated to the hokkien clan - Aitong, Tao Nan, Nan Hua, Nan Qiao, Chong Fu. They do teach chinese values which I believe will shape the kids' moral vales.

Anyway, in my years of teaching, I noticed those children who has good parental support are the ones who do well academically. I think parents shd play a part in the education of the child and they play an impt role in imparting values to them. There is just this much a teacher can do. Parents are the ones who tend to influence the kids more. So, even if you cannot get into the branded schools, be more proactive in your child's devt and if he/she is really good, he/she will still be offered the GEP in P4.

Thanks for offering your views, Rachelle. It's a good wake-up call from the obsession with PSLE scores and branded school.

I personally feel that any school near home location is fine. I will not want to send my school to a 'good' school that focuses so much on academic that my child finds it stressful. I just want to cultivate my child's interest in learning and let him learn by his own. With interest in learning, a child learns very fast.

I used to teach in a student care, I encountered so many children who are in very academic driven school, or even 'all rounded education' school that wants the children to join so many activities and yet excel academically. Their after school is packed with supplementary, enrichment classes, CCA, extra lessons, etc. Even when they are in morning session, by the time they leave school, it is already evening and they still have piles and piles of homework to complete when they reach home. Weekends and school holidays are also packed with activities. Scary just the thought of it.

Anyways, all the above are just personal opinion

I agreed with Jenna.
I prefer putting my kids near to my house as I want my kid to have enough sleep. Instead of waking up early to catch school bus. Even adult complains not enough sleep everyday, what do you think how a child feels?

Hi all,

We always hear about within 1km and 1-2km criteria during the P1 registration exercise.

Now I have this question: Canberra primary school is within 1km from my house, but almost at the border of the 1km (around 900m), and Wellington primary school is just next to my block. So, will my kid's chance of balloting to Canberra be reduced because my house is almost hitting the 1km, and some more there's already another school nearer?

When the school does the balloting, does the actual distance influence the chance of balloting? For example, will those kids staying 100m from school actually have higher chance compared to those staying 900m from school? Or will Canberra primary even reject my registration of balloting with them since there's another school nearer to my house?

Anyone has this experience to share?
Thanks.

I dont think it matters if it is 20m or 990m
They will only give preference first to the within 1km group.
THen to the 1-2km
Then the more than 2km

Hi Seanlsk,

Where are you staying and will your kids be registering for Pri 1 this year for next year 2013??

I am currently working as a PV at Canberra prim and I heard this yr's PV has alot of applicants..

Will you be considering other primary schools apart from Canberra Primary??

I am reluctant to send my boys to Pei Chun - I am an ex-school gal. But my elder insists in enrolling to the school.

It's so stressful, or is it?

Anyone mum with kids in Pei Chun?

Actually it depends on the calibre of the child who is to be enrolled in the school. If the child reads and speaks well at K2, it will probably be alright for he/she to be enrolled in a "more stressful" school. However, if the child has barely started reading, enrolling in such a school will add unnecessary stress to the child. The child needs a nurturing environment in P1 and P2 so that he is able to improve in reading, etc.

In choosing a school, one must consider the fit between the child and the school. Hope this helps!

I concur. The good school is an adjusted one, and a one that is eager to make further adjustments if there are new facts about a child, his or her preferences etc., health issues etc. A good one I kinda know, since I'm tied with it, is in Kallang, and its's Winstedt School, having additionally a paediatric therapy center by it (http://ashersolomon.sg/), so it's definitely flexible.

Am deciding between CHIJ Katong n Ngee Ann Primary. Have a gal whom is a dragon baby so pretty stressed over finding a nearby school n after school childcare.

Next year got to register. Tao nan sure no chance plus dun wan so stressful for her. wondering whether should do PV for Ngee Ann.

Any mummies can share ? I like Ngee Ann cos after school care is a classroom in the school. Kid no need to travel.
