Uterine fibroid 8cm

Hi,

Im 28 this year and having a uterine fibroid 8cm. My doctor advised that I need an open surgery to take out that fibroid. I feel so sad and I just dont want to eat, do anything. I now have no mood to study nor work, what should I do now?

Im also sad that the chance of having a baby to me is too far away now.

Sorry to hear about your condition. Have you sought a second opinion? I dont know the condition of your fibroid but 8cm fibroids could still be removed via laparoscopy which doesnt require open surgery.

It’s not the end of the world. You’ll get better for sure!

Hi. The doctor told me that open surgery makes it easier to restructure the uterus so that I can have baby in the future. Key hole is not easy to do this. She is a super nice gynae recommended by my friend.

But, I will try to get second opinion through the subsidised route at KKH. Now Im waiting for appointment.
Im having an exam this Aug and 3 more exams next May. Thinking of deferring all the courses Im taking because this event really drives me insane.
By the way thank you for comforting me. I really feel better reading your comments.

I don’t know who your gynae is, but your second opinion should be with a doc who is highly experienced with laparascopy. It’s highly possible the doc suggest open because they arent confident in laparoscopy.
Dwelling on it wouldnt help. I would suggest you try and continue with school to keep yourself distracted. Fibroids can be treated.

Hello, i got mine removed via myomectamy in 2006 and It's a 4cm fibroid. My right ovary was removed as well thru the process because the fibroid was "sticking" on it and there's no way to salvage it. Now, i'm a mummy of 2 girls, 3rd baby on the way. Don't worry....all will be fine after the removal. All the best!

Thank you for the advice. I guess I should continue with my school and work to help me financially. I will update everybody my progress soon.

Great to hear that. Did you follow any specific diet like low carb, less meat? Im worried the fibroids will be back after the surgery …and, congrats on your pregnancy, i wish to have 3 babies like you do.

Israeli lawyer Moshe Strugano (Attorney - Moshe Strugano and Co Law firm), an expert in the “formation of offshore companies" says, Low carb and good amount of protein can work, however, consulting with dietitian is important.

I didn't follow any specific diet. Just the normal and balance diet...some cheat days occassionally...:)

Last week I went to see another gynae at SGH and he also suggested open surgery because hes worried that if the fibroid is cancerous, key hole surgery might spread the cancer cells to other areas.

Definitely get a second opinion on open/keyhole surgery. Usually for women who are of childbearing age, doctors tend to recommend minimally invasive surgeries (if they are confident in doing it themselves). I did keyhole surgery to remove my 8cm fibroid last year (at 28yo also) and successfully conceived this year. Some gynaes also said that I can try to TTC first and some women’s babies can coexist with the fibroid. A friend of mine also got her fibroid removed during c sect delivery. There are many options. Seek a second opinion!

Hi dear. Can you recommend me your gynae and the hospital please? I wish to have the surgery at government hospital cause I cant afford the private rate. Tks a lot.

Chin Hsuan (Crystal). Her clinic is in mount E novena but my surgery was done in TMC. She said for women in late twenties typically they can start TTC 3 months after surgery. For open surgery the downtime is around 6 months. I also consulted Eliza Koh (also in Mount E Novena) and she suggested open surgery. From reading about Chin Hsuan’s specialization I think she’s more specialized in minimally invasive surgeries so I opted for her at last.

Oh may I know the same of your gynae please? Thanks so much.
Actually Dr Chin also suggested trying for baby first because fibroids do not affect fertility in most cases (depending on the location of the fibroid). She recommended that if there’s no good news for a longer while I can opt for surgery. It’s just that at that time I thought it would be better to have a “clean” womb to start TTC so I decided to do the surgery first.

Oh I think 8cm is too big to TTC first so I decided to clear the womb first, same as your case. I already met 2 gynaes who both suggested open surgery. If I cant find any gynae at gov to perform key hole then I'll consult dr Chin. May I know how long is you incision cut? Im so worried of the scar also sigh!

I have 3 incisions: one at bellybutton (which is not visible at all) and another 2 that are around 1cm long. They can be covered by my low rise panty so I’m not too concerned. I was too lazy to use the scar gel I got lol.
Oh I remember now!!! At that time a friend’s friend did her keyhole surgery at KKH, done by Dr Bernard Chern. He is the head consultant and specialises in minimally invasive surgeries! From what I heard he is very experienced and the surgery went well. It was just that I was technically a foreigner at the time so I didn’t go for KKH. Try to see if you can make an appointment with him!!

Hi I just saw your post. Hope you had gone for a 2nd or 3rd opinion. Dont lose hope.
I was a fibroid mummy too. I had 2 fibroids, 1 at 8cm and 1 at 4cm. But the location of these fibroids outside the uterus so my gynae encouraged for me to TTC. It was a complicated first birth as the fibroids grow together with the baby till about 14cm and 8cm respectively and I had to deal with initial bleedings etc. So it all really depends on the the location of the fibroids and how you work with your gynae if you decide to go ahead to get pregnant. I removed the fibroids 1 year after I gave birth via a open surgery. I TTC again 1 year after the surgery. I have to say, the pregnancy was easier compared to the first.

Hi. Thank you for sharing your journey. I went for a few opinions and really hit hard on my pocket. One suggested me to TTC first but Im worried of miscarriage. Another advised me to go for open surgery i/o key hole because dr said if via key hole, when we get pregnant, uterus might rupture when the baby grows. I dont really want to deal with miscarriage so I might go for surgery first. Just worried that after surgery Im unable to TTC .

If you decide to go for surgery than trust your doc. The reason you want to remove your fibroids is to help you TTC so I believe it would be ok. Many of us had proceed to try without removal and some had proceed to try after removal.
Stay positive.

Hi. Ttc is trying to conceive. I think for 7.5cm, can do key hole surgery. Please consult the gynae first.

thank u 美女,my appt with gynae is april so tot i can sought sme help from tcm
Hmm you may try but it might take long time. People also claim that doing intense exercise, eliminating animal consumptions might shrink the fibroid. The soy thing is a bit controversial so I also avoid it completely.

hi sushi80, able to share on your experience on the open surgery? Thanks.

Hi, I had my first keyhole surgery to remove 7 fibroids in year 2015 from TMC specialist Dr Tay. After 7 years, my fibroid is back at 7cm and my doctor strongly advise to go for surgery but my insurance only cover govt hospital. Tried many methods including reduce meat consumption and TCM acupuncture but don't seem to be able to control the growth.
Anyone went for fibroids removal for more than 2 times?

At the end, what is your decision?

Hi cyberzhen, how big was your fibroids back then in 2015? Will you be doing keyhole this time round?
Fibroid is about 2-5cm (total remove 7) in year 2015.
My gynae said keyhole can remove up to 10cm size. My 6 months regular checkup rotate between private doctor and SGH but my insurance only cover govt hospital. So might go consult doctor at SGH.

Hi Ladies, I want to share my experience on fibroids and cysts removal. I also have endometriosis. Monthly periods are really painful for me since young. I’m 42yo and never had children. I decided to do hysterectomy (removal of uterus). The key is to find right doctor that u trust! I found mine at KKH - Dr LEE JIAH MIN.
There is a method called vaginal hysterectomy which is least invasive compared to keyhole.

I done a tumour marker test, results shows high CA125 and CA 19.9. I went to Eliza Koh clinic at Mount E, and she recommended open cut surgery by herself and also have a colonoscopy doctor come in, as MRI results shows my left ovaries are too clumped with cysts and intestines, maybe affecting my rectum too. Obviously shaken, I sought opinions from friends who kindly share their journey, usually their doctors did keyhole surgeries.
Private hospital route estimate is at $45-50K, my insurance cannot cover. So I went the gov hospital route. A friend recommended Dr Andy Tan from SGH but he already went into private practice with Gleneagles.

Most female gynaecologist are from KKH and I browse thru their website and found DR LEE JIAH MIN’s profile to be most suitable. She’s the best! She was patient and explained that I do not need an open cut surgery. Her words just soothe the weeks of torment i was having from all the doctors visits and tests. It was very reassuring to see her confidently telling me what the procedure will be, and I booked my surgery date on the same day.

Waiting for the surgery was not as tough as I know I can trust my doctor. Dr Lee even called me personally a day before my surgery to check on me and run thru the process. That’s how I know a doctor is sincere and puts her patient’s wellbeing first.

I am now recovering very well. Compared to patients after keyhole surgeries, I was able to go to the toilet on my own in less than 24hrs after surgery. And I even took a bathe on my own a day after. It is the least invasive procedure and I have NO visible wounds! Dr Lee took the laborious method to remove the gunk by vaginal hysterectomy, saving as much of my ovaries as possible.

I am immensely grateful as I am able to trust my doctor. I’m very blessed, everything turn out better than I’d expected.

Ladies out there having the same problem as me, I understand your fears and worries. Do not be afraid to seek 2nd opinion so as u can cast away your doubts. Find a doctor u can trust :)

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Consider getting a second opinion from Dr. Ng at GynaeMD Women's Clinic. Dr. Ng is known for expertise in fibroid cases. A consultation could offer insights and alternative options. Take it one step at a time. Wishing you strength and a speedy recovery.

Hello can u stop ur promoting everywhere !!!
I already report ur post to the admin

I read somewhere, it states that fibroid will grow 1cm per year on average. Could it be the fibroid was the small one left over from the previous surgery? Im trying to avoid soy completely in the hope it dun return, fingers crossed.
