Thyroid and pregnancy

Hi Stinzy,

I have super high hyperthyroid....but, managed to have 2 almost fuzz-free pregnancies and now a proud mummy of 2 daughters aged 7 and 5.5 :)

You have to work closely with your Endrocrinologist to monitor your thyroid situation and you should be fine.

Hi Stinzy,

You will have to discuss with your Endrocrinologist to monitor your thyroid situation. In fact, I was not with any Endro for treatment of my thyroid condition until I was pregnant where my Gynae recommended me to see an Endro to monitor my condition.

When I was diagnosed with hyperthyroid condition by my Company GP, I was under treatment by the GP and my thyroid condition was like roller coaster....sometimes good sometimes bad, never stablised. In the midst of treatment, I found out I was pregnant and saw my Gynae. First thing that came to my mind was worry due to my condition.

Throughout my pregnancies, my Gynae worked closed with my Endro to monitor my condition and I have to thank God for granting me 2 almost fuss-free pregnancies and smooth deliveries :)

Currently, I am still see my Endro and my Thyroid is well kept under control.

Btw, my gynae is Dr Ben Neo from Mount Elizabeth Women's Clinic @ Lucky Plaza and my Endro is Dr Tan Khai Tong from Mt E Medical Centres. They are very assuring doctors and I count every blessings that I was under their care :)

Take heart and Best of Luck to you :)

I have hyperthyroidism, and im 31 weeks pregnant. I had to see my endocrinologist every 3 weeks throughout my pregnancy to monitor my condition.

Hi everyone, I also have Hyperthyroidism for few years before pregnancy and taking PTU. My condition was stable with normal blood test result for a year and I stopped taking PTU once I realised I was pregnant as GP dr informed me that there were arguments that PTU was not really safe for the baby at first trimester. I went for blood test every month to check if my condiiton had worsen. During my week 21, my blood test result showed that my thyroid level had gone up and referred me to Endocrine specialist, whose earliest appt is on 7 Feb. I had started to take the PTU now but was worried if baby would inherit this problem and whether the PTU is harmful to her. Any MTBs taking PTU during pregnancy?

I took PTU throughout my pregnancy as im allergic to carbimazole. Don't worry too much, just that in pregnancy be prepared to see your endocrinologist every few weeks for a blood test as they will need to keep monitoring ur levels and adjust the dosage.

Hi Dion83sg,

I took PTU throughout both my pregnancies until I was about 7 mths into my pregnancies when my thyroid condition was confirmed stable by my Endrocrinologist.

As mentioned by Melodyy, you have to keep monitoring your Thyroid condition and adjust your medication accordingly. As you are now pregnant, you may want to consider seeing an Endrocinologist to monitor your situation instead of relying on the GP's advice.

Both my girls are very healthy and they are FREE from thyroid problems as of now. But, I cannot guarantee that they will not get it as Thyroidism is hereditary.

Hi Roxanne, just to share. I have hyperthyroidism since Feb 2013. I went to see a normal GP as I was not feeling well and my GP noticed that my neck is swollen and asked me to take blood test and ultrasound scan on my neck. I went ahead and I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. My case is inheritance as my dad, aunt n Aunty had it. Two months after I was diagnosed, I was Preggie. I informed the endocrinologist that I am seeing at TTSH and he did not change my medicine- PTU but brought down to 100 mg per day instead of 150 mg but blood test results for the subsequent visit was not flavorable and he brought it back to 150 mg per day. He told me that it is safe for pregnancy. I also needed to go for blood test and see doctor every two weeks. Just need to take my PTU religiously. I gave birth to my baby girl at a healthy weight and her blood was tested. I was sad as she was diagnosed with hyperthyroid as the antibodies from my condition was passed to her blood through placenta and now seeing a endocrinologist for children and she is taking med according to her blood test results. Luckily, her results are getting better and better and now TSH in the normal range while T3 and T4 are nearing the normal range. The Dr assured us that the antibodies that I passed to her will be worn off soon and her thyroid levels will be in the normal range and she will no longer needs any more medicine.. Hopefully, she will recover in the shortest time... While I still need to continue my PTU for a long time even my results are in the normal range as the Dr does not want me to have a relapse for my condition.

Hi cel_, I was kind of worried that my hyperthyroidism would be passed to my baby girl. I was already in week 27 when I took back the PTU again. I was hoping I would not need to take PTU in my entire pregnancy, but....

Hi Dion, dun worry so much. Everything will be fine. Take ur PTU religiously. Must rem to take everyday. Cannot dun take. Is not every carriers' antibodies will pass on to babies. Maybe yours won't pass on to baby. Dun worry. Be positive. I also needed to visit my specialist every two to four weeks to take my blood test to monitor my condition. Oh yes.. My specialist told me not to take seaweed as it contains high level of iodine. I made a search and found out that some foods contain iodine.. So now I will minimize or avoid.

Hi just to share, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroid in 2008, and was on meds for years, but my levels never stabilised. Upon consultation with my doc at SGH and a 2nd opinion with another endocrinologist, I went for radio-iodine therapy in 2011, before ttc-ing. I've been on thyroxine replacement pills since then, with regular blood tests to check levels. Had a miscarriage in Jan last year. We later discovered that at that point in time, my levels were way off, but there was no way to know if that was the cause of the miscarriage. I chose to stay positive. To our delight, i was pregnant again soon after, and my endocrinologist immediately increased my thyroxine dosage. With regular blood tests and adjustments of the meds dosage, I had a healthy pregnancy this time. My baby was born in Dec. His thyroid levels were off, but otherwise healthy. PD said that my baby's thyroid imbalance was due to my meds and it should normalise after some time. True enough, after 2 months, his bloodwork just came back normal :) Don't worry too much. Just make sure your endocrinologist and gynae work hand-in-hand, and have faith!

I had met my endocrinologist on 7 Feb 14 and she advised me to continue with the PTU. I would be doing the blood test on 22 Feb 14 to check if the antibodies would pass through the placenta to the baby and also she could only check if the baby would inherit this problem after delivery. She told me that there were many mommies who took PTU throughout the pregnancy and the babies were fine. Another 9 weeks to go....

Sometimes take med when your pregnant it can cause some problem in your pregnancy.

55mom, if you don't know anything please do not comment. Not taking medicine while having hyperthyroidism WILL cause harm to the baby. Do you know that if your thyroid is not properly controlled during pregnancy during pregnancy can lead to :

  • congestive heart failure
  • preeclampsia—a dangerous rise in blood pressure in late pregnancy
  • thyroid storm—a sudden, severe worsening of symptoms
  • miscarriage
  • premature birth
  • low birth weight
And the medicine prescribed during pregnancy is considered safe. Please do not go around scaring mummies to be without researching on the condition first. thanks.

My thyroid level was back to normal after taking PTU for 5 weeks. Dr Veronique from KKH advised me to continue taking PTU and will do another blood test for me on 26 Mar 14. Hopefully the leve could maintain normal with medication. Dr said baby was at normal weight during the last scan. Currently in my 35 weeks... 5 more weeks to go....

Jiayou! I took ptu through out my first pregnancy... having #2 now.. i need to visit my endocrinologist every month to test my thyroid levels,he did mention that new studies suggest that carbimazole is the safer med compared to ptu.. oh well..

I was not aware that low/high thyroid levels would be harmful to baby because previously I was seeing this useless doctor. Just recently changed dr and the first thing he asked me to do is take blood test to check my thyroid levels. Have not got results back but worried if my earlier inaction was harmful. Sigh. So mummies, it is good that so many of you are aware of the importance. :)

Take care and dont worry so much yeah.. being preggers will improve thyroid levels.. bring it to a more norm level due to the hormonal change in our bodies.. however it's still good to monitor one's thyroid condition..

My Dr told me the thyroid result might be inaccurate when tested during the first trimster due to our hormones change. But don't worry, your Dr will advise you accordingly. How many weeks are u now?

hi fluffyduckx84, oh, didn't know that being preggers will improve thyroid levels! Yay! That's good to know! Thanks!

hi dion83sg, I'm at 10 weeks now. Think probably will have to monitor closely like you say. I will try to remember to report back when I know more. :D

Hi mommies to be,

Prior to your pregnancy, do you have any symptoms which indicate that you may have thyroid issues? The reason I asked is coz the current tcm I am seeing, he said a bit strange that my heartbeat is always on the fast side, and often asked me if I have got my thyroid levels checked in blood tests. I only had it checked last year, which did not indicate any issues. Anyway, due to my multiple losses, I am referred by my gynae Dr Loh to recurrent miscarriage professor Professor Choolani, and I believe that he has my thyroid levels checked too, among other things. Will review our test results with him on Sept 25 (Fri) at 11:00 in his private clinic.

Hyper thyroid symptoms include: heart palpitations (fast heartbeat) even when you are resting and sitting, tremble hands, cold sweats, neck look swollen, increase in appetite but lost weight (eat alot but won't get fat), feeling tired easily. You could get a few of the symptoms and not all at one time and symptoms could stop or appear suddenly.

Hello! I have hyperthyroidism for many yrs le. But its beta to get it under control first den try cos chances of miscarriage is higher wen yr lvls r haywire. Dear mummies,

May I know who were the thyroid doc and gynae that u had seen throughout your pregnancy?
I just had a miscarriage at week 9, and my thyroid doc is really terrible. He did not see me for the whole 9 weeks until it’s too late. He is Dr Abel Soh frm Mt E.

He never told me prior to pregnancy that thyroid problem is considered high risk pregnancy and chances of miscarriage and other complications is higher. Had I known, I would have treat my thyroid to stabilised level before trying to conceive. And he knew I was trying, as I told him we’ve been trying for few years.
I’m really disappointed and bashing myself for being ignorant too. I relied on the expert, thinking that I’ve had thyroid 10 years ago and it went away after 1.5yr treatment . Now it’s back to haunt me and I just suffer a heavy price.

Pls share, as I’d like to treat my condition with a good thyroid doctor that can work hand in hand with gynae.

I am under treatment of SGH Dr Bee for my 2 pregnancy. He will monitor and advise to stable before pregnant so that can have minimum dosage of PTU during pregnancy

Dear Katty,
Did you had 2 successful pregnancy under Dr Bee’s care? Were your thyroid level stable before you got pregnant? How often did you see Dr Bee throughout your pregnancy to monitor your thyroid?
Is your gynae from SGH too?
I’m really scared after my traumatic miscarriage and wish to ask more from experienced mummy

During the pregnancy, i almost seeing Dr Bee like every 1m or 1.5m. He monitor very closely

Hi all, am also having some thyroid issue.. hypothyroid. Taking thyroxine medication to control the level. Read the threads above and seems like really need to monitor closely during pregnancy. Level came back up once the medication is stopped. Wondering if there is any other way to help improve the levels.

Yes, I am being monitored regularly by my doctor through blood tests and follow-ups to make sure the levels are all within normal or acceptable range during the pregnancy. I think for us with thyroid issues, the only way of control is really through taking medication timely and at the correct dosage as our pregnancies progress.

Hi there,

I’m seeing Dr Ho Su Chin at Mt E for my thyroid issues and she’s working hand-in-hand with my doctor on the pregnancy.

Yes it is ideal to adjust our thyroid levels to the optimum before trying to conceive. I wasn’t aware of this too prior to seeing her.

All the best and I hope you feel better soon.
