Recommendation for good ADHD / Autism specialist?

Hi,
My son is 2 yrs old, and is not responding when called by his name at all. He does not have a problem with his hearing though, so I suspect it might have something to do with adhd/autism.

He also can't speak a single word, and when frustrated would throw away anything he could find and banging his head against the wall. Can anyone recommend a good specialist for such case? Preferably based on your personal experience?

Hi,

It might be a good idea to get your son checked out by a psychologist. You have two options; 1. See a private psychologist, which is expensive, but you will get a diagnosis faster. Shelwyn Tay at The Integrated Psychology Practice was good for us. https://www.facebook.com/TheIntegratedPsychologyPractice.
2. Alternatively, you can call KKH or SGH and make an appointment with their Department of Child Development, to have a PD and a psychologist assess your child - do check the waiting time though. We were told it would be a 6 month to 1 yr waiting time, and we decided to go the private route as we wanted to start intervention therapies asap.

Hi you may wish to bring ur child to any polyclinics and request the doctor for referral letter. Hope it helps....

Hi MudBaker :)

Maybe you can try ABA therapy instead? Your child don't have to be diagnosed under the autistic spectrum to try therapy. ABA therapy can help improve his behavior.

My son has been doing home-based therapy for a few months now and is improving. At first I did not know how to handle him because he is not paying attention to anything at all. He keeps looking away and does not imitate movements like typical children. After starting therapy, I can see an improvement and it is easier to interact with him now.

Hi JoosRCool, can u share more about this ABA therapy ? U do it by yourself or need a specialist ?

Hi Karenthk! I engage in a therapist to do therapy. ABA is basically shaping good behavior with reward. My therapist will practice many things with my son such as washing hands, learning to share etc. And even basic things like greeting, talking etc. Its very personalised as they will work on things that I am concern about.

Hi mothers

Anyone can share about Divinity School for Especial Needs, Zee Learning and Kids4Kids?

I am sourcing for another school to replace St Gerard.

Just to share...

Olive Tree Development Centre Located in Goldhill Centre, will be organising an
ADHD Workshop "Understanding and Supporting Your AD/HD Child/Teen at Home and at School" Thur 29 May 7-9pm Parents Info Nite. - FREE

KathyNichols, Founder of F.O.C.U.S. (Focus On Children's Understanding in School) share about AD/HD, providing an over-view of AD/HD and the conditions that often co-exist with AD/HD such as SLD (Specific Learning Disabilities - dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia), Anxiety, Depression, Addictions and the underlying issues of Executive Functioning. She will share her experiences as a classroom teacher as well as a parent of four children, university graduates who carry/carried the AD/HD diagnosis. This will be an interactive discussion and presentation which will offer strategies for parents and teachers that will support the AD/HD child/teenager, diminish many of the challenging and frustrating dimensions of AD/HD and contribute to a positive home and school environment. Following this overview, she plans to run a series of practical AD/HD workshops for parents Aug-Sept

I've been using the same therapist for a long time now, i recently moved back from HK can continued with them. I think its important to find a therapist you can trust and also shows results.

And i have to say, your kids MUST connect with the therapist. ABA is used to shape behaviors and can be very useful toward tasks like speech, sentence construction , eye contact - secondary tasks like washing hands are outcomes of small segments.

Yes definitely. Finding one that you can trust and also have chemistry with your kid is very important. Even if the methods are good, you want your kid to enjoy therapy sessions. especially since therapy sessions demands so much from them; you want to create a good experience.

Hi all, I would like to find out more on ABA therapy. My son (4 yrs old) is very active and has been receiving complaints & had been withdrawn from 2 schools for past 2 yrs. Teachers feedback that he cannot sit still, walk around, short attention span and will disturb/hit classmates for no reason at times. He can speaks well, has eye contact and does know what was being taught in class. Had just went for assessment by KKH and was told he does not have ADHD, doc suggests I attend the Signpost programme (in Sept) to learn how to manage him and modify his behaviour.

As shared above, ABA is abouting shaping good behaviour. A search from Internet seems to suggest this therapy is more applicable for Austim issue, thus would like to know whether is ABA applicable for his case?

Hi applemom!

your son may benefit from some ABA lessons as ABA generally targets behavior. Regarding autism, you need to find therapists who have experience with behaviors such as your son's. You can give a try for a month or two. However, keep in mind that its not sessions are not cheap and results are only possible through constant commitment.

If you'd like, I can recommend my therapist. :) according to her, she has experience with kids similar to your child (e.g. short attention span, more gross motor than fine motor).
