My Wonderful Experience with CN Hor Yoke Chen (Qing Jie)

Almost coming to the end of my confinement with my nanny Qing Jie (清姐)and I know that I'm going to miss her so much!

I'm a first-time mum and being able to engage her for my confinement was such a blessing. As my husband and I live quite far from our parents, we were definitely anxious and worried about how to care for our newborn while managing my body postpartum. Qing Jie was just wonderful in helping us get through this period and in keeping us sane!

1. Loving towards baby - She genuinely cares for our baby boy, often singing songs to him, playing with him, and comforting him. She is also incredibly patient and never gets annoyed with his frequent diaper changes! My baby spit up a lot too and she always patiently changed his clothes even when it was just a little wet so that he is kept clean and comfortable!

2. Caring towards mummy - She showed lots of care and concern towards me, reminding me to rest and to lie down (I'm the type that is often "on the go") and she was absolutely right. Because I didn't think much about it initially and was still walking around, bending etc. and I could tell that my wounds were not healing well; in just a few days I would feel really uncomfortable towards the evening. When I heeded her advice and rested more, it really made a difference.

3. Takes initiative - All the resting was only possible because Qing Jie takes a lot of initiative. She knows what you and baby need even before you can think of it! She does the house chores, does the laundry, etc. without having to be told - she just strives to help make our environment comfortable. Another example - when I was bringing out my breast pump items in the middle of the night to consolidate the expressed milk, she took the items once she saw me and told me to go back to bed! Yet another example - I learnt online about the fridge hack for pump parts (i.e., to keep the parts in a ziploc in the fridge so you can reuse them within 24 hours without washing) and tried it, but Qing Jie quickly told me that I didn't have to do that since she is here; I should just use them once and have her clean them after each use. It was amazing and frankly quite extraordinary - she rather have more work for herself than to risk baby's health!

4. Knowledgeable and experienced - Qing Jie understands babies very well and is masterful in caring for the baby! She keeps the door open / unlocked so that you can always go in and see baby at any time; she is fully confident with her skills and not worried about you being able to see her interactions with baby. She also is well-versed in nutrition and also breastfeeding. She is gentle in giving her advice and is not naggy too. Not only that, she is always happy to share more to support us so that we wouldn't flounder after she leaves :( You might have also seen other reviews in this forum that her cooking is superb - I wholeheartedly agree! She has all sorts of ways to cook ginger so that you don't taste it so strongly in the dishes.

Adding post my confinement - as further testament to Qing Jie's care, she even prepared a couple of meals in the fridge for my husband and I to easily heat up after she left as she knew that we don't really know how to cook. She also fried up a whole box of ikan bilis for me to use later so that I can easily make noodle soup for my lunch meals as well.

More notes - Qing Jie is 95% mandarin speaking (e.g., she sometimes needs to clarify English terms for calendar months), but she is quite familiar with baby-related and breastfeeding-related terms. Also, Qing Jie loves to sing; she does listen to songs on her phone / voice messages with her family and friends on and off, so do consider your own comfort level with that :) I personally am ok with this as long as she does her job and she does it well!

Overall, I feel really fortunate to have engaged Qing Jie as my confinement nanny. I cried buckets to my husband thinking about her upcoming last day with us! I found Qing Jie because of another mummy's positive review on this forum, so I wanted to pay it forward too. I was completely clueless as to how to interview a potential confinement nanny but my experience with Qing Jie turned out so well. I highly recommend Qing Jie, do dm me if you have any questions or would like her contact!
