My 2 year old son diagnosed with Autism

Hi, my 2 year old son has been diagnosed with autism specs today. Been dreading this and feeling blue. I've suspected few months ago that he has development problems not meeting his milestones and started aba with him 1 1/2 months ago with private company. Showed improvements. He was not pointing, looking at us when we call and stopped progressing in speech and dropped words that he learnt. Any mummy has same situation as me and can share with me your experience? This has also drawn me to suspect that my hubby has specs of autism and my mil too. My hubby feels strongly too that he has it. I've known him more than 20 years and we are starting to join the dots to why he always has a bit of social awkwardness. Feeling v alone now. My mom and elder sister are not taking the news well and staying away from us in grief becos of my sons diagnosis.

Autism can be cured with therapy. Get him enrolled in the therapies n expose him to more kids. I believe A lot of kids with autism hv special talent. Don't give up mummy. Jiayou!

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm trying to be positive and I know I'm lucky I got it discovered this early at his age; early intervention helps lots. My hubby went through a lot of anxiety, bullying and being of an outcast when he was young. With my son, I hope there's a good chance we can help him. I'm only hoping that my son will be like his father and be able to join in mainstream school and that his autism is not on the classic serious side; its early days yet as he's trying to form speech but from our observation, he could be on the mild side. He is a super bright child till the last 6-8 months when he suddenly stopped calling us and didn't meet his milestones and now that we know, we are trying to make sure he doesn't regress in even the most basic stuff like climbing stairs and not reducing to crawling. he's still cheerful and humorous though he does not have a sense of danger i.e. crossing roads, fear of heights and he hugs me though he still do not call me mummy on a daily basis or look at me much. I had my son when I was 37. I used to tell my hubby when we came across parents with children who have meltdowns in public or uncontrollable that I would never let my kids be like that but now that I'm a mum and having a hyper autistic kid, I now know the feelings. They say parents who learnt their kids are autistic goes through a grieving phase where we realise that the dreams we aspire our kids to have are not possible and we worry for their future. Then we have to pull up our socks, and be strong for the sake of our kid. Its early days for me; 2.5 months to be precise since we've learnt of his condition. lots of skeletons rattled and dots joined and the cloud that rains is still above our heads. Hoping sunny days ahead soon and faith and love will keep me and my family strong. A step at a time for me.

I have two friends whose sons got diagnosed with ASD as well. After some months of therapy and change in diet recommended by the specialists, their development improved a lot and can now play with their sliblings (not together yet but at least side by side). All the best!

I guess we are on the same boat.been very anxious lately my child is showing signs of autism. We have sent an appointment to see a child development soecialist. He is also 2 years old. I hope with proper therapy our kids will overcome this and live a normal life.

Hi, at how many months old your child was confirmed autism? You mentioned he is not meeting certain milestones. Can you shares what are those?
I am also worried. My son at 24 months still not speaking yet. He doesn't point to things he wants. He will only look at it and shout. However, he does have eye contact and is very cheerful.

Hi. We have notice that he isn't speaking yet. Although he knows his alphabets, shapes and numbers and can label objects but he can't use it to communicate with us. Like your child he is also a cheerful boy he would play with us but not with other people (eg. Kids in his playgroup class). He was diagnos 2 weeks ago. He is 2 years and 3 months now. Next week we will start all his therapies and praying for the best.

Hi dwagon,

Where did u get yr child diagnosed?

My 26 Mths son also has not started talking yet. Not much eye contact n only recently know how to point.

But he know 1-10, fruit n vegetable n shapes.

We ever bring hm to kk for development check n the doc refer us to the Autism doc but she only say he got mild /slight sys. Will see him in another 10mths time when he is 2 yrs 10 Mths. She only start him on speech n occupational therapy.

We also bring him to see private specialist he also say the same thing like to young to confirm, getting him label is only for the purpose to enrolling in special school.

i start Hi jog,

May i know what type of the diet plan is? which specialist your friends was took?
I just realise my kid got few symptom of the autism, and just make appt last week. It was so sad and i start go thru all his old photo, and start noticed it only start no eye contact when he is around 13-15mth old. And stop pointing object around 1 years old... It is a time i stop breastfeeding and full milk formula and start solid food. My mum feed him alot bread a day (atleast 4slice of bread a day) so i suspect maybe is diet change his behaviour.(as a mum, we want to try solution for our kid.) 2nd will be early injection cause problem.
Before any therapy, i hope to do anything which i can start with to improve his social life and back gto track.
Hope you can provide me some information.

Thank
(my kid is 20mth now)

Hi winniepig,
My friend mentioned the dietician recommended gluten-free and casein free diets. She was busy hunting for casein free milk for her boy. I was pretty concerned since I also have a toddler boy so I did some reading up before bringing my boy to his MMR vaccinations. You can read more about such diets online. The reason for these diets is that some children cannot efficiently digest gluten and casein hence peptides leaked into the blood and goes to the brains causing ASD symptoms. One of the links I went to is here http://www.webmd.com/brain/autism/news/20100505/can-special-diets-treat-autism . The other friend whom I am less close with also gave her boy special diets recommended by the specialist treating her boy.

All in all, my friends resorted to every possible treatment - diet, therapies, special classes, medication (one of which involved some injections). Mums are honestly the most noble people on earth.

Hope the above can help you somewhat. All the best, jiayou!

Thank Jog,
I am studying the gluten free/soya free/no yeast diet from biomedicine (hope it is help)
Still cannot find any milk which is suitable for him now, but i start to reduce the powder and sourcing back the breastmilk. Plan to home bake bread but cannot find a 'no gluten' contain flour.

hope every parent to be strong and work together, the younger kid more easy to correct them back to normal.

Winniepig, my friend is giving his boy goat's milk. Goat's milk is easier to digest, has less lactose and has components similar to breastmilk. Do read up on it and give it a try if you find it suitable.

hi,
My son (just turned 3) said his first word when he was 2.5 years old too. But quite difficult to understand him so we brought him to Kandang Kerbau Hospital. He is seeing the speech therapist there but waitlist was quite long and can only see him once a month. 2 months ago the speech therapist said he may have apraxia but they still can't give him more regular therapy. he is seeing a home speech therapist once a week now and the Kandang Kerbau Hospital speech therapist once a month - so far he's getting better and slowly combining 3 words though some sounds still not clear. But at least he is shouting and crying less coz now he can say more. We also suspected that he had autism as he wasn't talking and not so much eye contact but after some therapy, both improved.

So dont't give up!

P.S. anyone know of any good childcare centre that is focused on speech and language?

Thanks!

My 2 yo is suspect to have autism. He can't speak yet. I want to send him for therapy at private centres as queue at EPIC is too long.
Can mummies here recommend a good OT and language therapist for me?
Thanks .

My son 17mths , he is not talking but able to point to indicate what he wants. Shld I be concerned? Or just slow in speech?

Dwagon, you mentioned your yr child was very bright before he suddenly stopped calling u, do you remember if it was after his vaccination when it happened? Have you heard of vaccination injuries? You can read up at NVIC website for more info. Just google search the website.

Parents, pls educate yourself on the vaccine injuries. Before you vaccinate your child, pls ask to look at vaccine packaging as it has the list of side effects listed on the packaging. For parents who wish to vaccinate your child, pls space out the vaccinations at least 6 months apart. Pls vaccinate your child at 2 years as the child's blood brain barrier is not fully formed for the first 2 years. These are measures to minimize damage that a vaccine may bring to a child.

There is one vaccine injuries thread in smh, the name of the thread is vaccination injuries. I hope more parents can educate themselves on the side effects of vaccination, as the side effects are very real.

You can also read up on Dr Mercola's : A User Friendly Vaccination Schedule
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2004/12/29/vaccination-schedule-part-one.aspx

Can the vaccination caused autism?
Our child's vacinnation program is scheduled by polyclinic, should not be a problem, right?

The vaccination schedule is recommended by the polyclinic but the vaccinations can be delayed as you do not need to adhere to the schedule strictly. Only measles and diphtheria vaccination are compulsory.

I have read many true stories of how kids are damaged by vaccines on Facebook.

Bs1970, I can only encourage u to do the read up yourself and make an informed decision when u vaccinate yr child. All vaccinations has risks. If you choose to follow the polyclinic or doctor's schedule for vaccination, do note they will not be responsible for any side effects or damage that are caused by the vaccines.

In fact, they will tell u that it is not caused by the vaccines. Many healthy kids in America have suffered the side effects of vaccines. They have a vaccine injury compensation program but not in Singapore. Do educate yrself by reading up on http://www.nvic.org

I am sharing this info so that more parents will be more informed on the risks of vaccination, and make the best choice for their kids to minimize the occurrence of vaccine injuries.

Hi,

I am not sure about the vaccines cause autism until i suspect my kid behave after the jab and refuse to re-act to us now. when i realise he no eye contact and speech slow, and someone actually highlight to me about this is autism symptom. i am so worry and start doing alot research... and look back all the photo and video which we took before. He was alright and pointing/greeting us when he is ard 14month old, but slowly slowly it was disappear...

It may alot reason:(after the research)
a. diet problem (i stop breastfeed ard 13month and change milk powder to step 3), he start solic food and he like bread (ate 4to5 slide per day) - gluten/daily cause some problem to younger kid
b. Vaccination - checked with KK psychologist, they say no as usual
c. some autism will come out after 2year old, when they grow. Home/school development problem cause.
d. family history

My boy is the younger (got 2 kid 6&7 yrs old), i felt bad not much attention on his growing step. whole family treat him is 'baby' all time, my elder boy start talking ard 2yrs old but he was talkative now, so we dun treat younger got speech problem. Just feel it will slowly learn and be better. Eye contact become more 'problem' and social skill.

My baby completed all the jab now, which we cannot do anything to prevent. If it is not a 'need' Vaccination, please wait until they grow up. donot be 'kiasu', avoid any side effect.
I cannot stop blame myself to let my child to go through such assessment and test, heart so pain.

Winniepig,

Please trust your instinct. You have written down the answer yourself, that you have noticed the change in yr child after the jab. The answer is obvious. Change of diet do not cause autism. Autism do not go away on its own. If a child do not have eye contact with their parents or do not respond, it is a cause for concern.

However, if a child is quiet but is able to express his needs through eye contact or body language. The child is slow in speech, just to need to communicate more to him/her. I know this because my daughter is slow in speech compared to other kids when she was young, but she responds when I call her. Now she is ten years old, she is able to communicate and socialize with her classmates. All children develop at different pace, but if they do not have eye contact with people or seems to be in their own world, it is not a normal behaviour.

There is a facebook group, Vaccines : A license to kill where parents share their story on how their healthy babies change overnight after vaccination. It is very heartbreaking for me to read how the kids change after a jab. Do read up on NVIC website if you have the time, as they hv been actively educating parents on the side effects of vaccination. Doctors in singapore or USA would never attribute these changes in a child to vaccination. There are parents like you who notice these changes after the child has a jab.

Winnie, do not blame yourself. It is not your fault. Is it confirmed that yr youngest child has autism? Does he responds to you when you call him? If the autism is mild, intervention will help a lot. I am unable to help you on intervention as I have no experience in it. There is a thread on autism in the forum where mummies shared how they help their kids. It Is at the discussion threads either at Motherhood, pregnancies threads or Matters of the heart thread. Do a search on autism and you should be able to find it. If you can't find it, let me know.

Do note that there will be vaccinations in the primary school at primary 1 and 5. Not sure abt secondary school, I will probably know that in 3 years time. Or parents can search on the vaccination schedule in MOH online.

Do take a look at detailed list of different vaccine inserts in the website link below. It includes the list of contraindications, adverse reaction, warning and precaution and so on.

Always ask to look at the vaccine inserts before you vaccinate your child. After reading it, then decide whether you still want to vaccinate your child. Make an informed choice.

Before my son's first 5 in 1 jab, I asked the nurses about the safety issue as I have also read about the news that infants passed away after vaccination. She simply brushed me off as almost all kids in Singapore is taking 5 in 1 with no problem.

Bs1970,

Not every child will be affected by the side effects of vaccines, you would not know how the vaccines would affect each individual. You do not know how the vaccines would react in each individual's immune system, as I hv mentioned in my earlier postings. Adverse reactions are stated in the vaccine inserts, it is the parent's choice whether to vaccinate the child.

Most or all nurses and doctors will brush it off, saying most kids hv no problem. Note the loophole, "most kids" not all kids. Even if the parents feel it is the vaccine causing it, do you think the doctors will acknowledge it? That is why i am encouraging parents to make an informed choice because they are the ones who will hv to bear the consequences, not the doctors or the nurses. Parents have the rights to decline or delay vaccination, do not let the nurses or doctors change your mind.

Can I say for those autistic kids who showed zero symptoms during baby time, vacinnation is the possible cause?

My son has very good eye contact when he was a baby. Started smiling at 2 months old, cooing at 3 months old. Nobody will believe he turns out to become an autistic kid.
I remember he took his 5 in 1 plus rotavirus plus another vacinn at 3 month old. That time I asked the nurse if it is safe for a 3 months old taking so many jabs in 1 day.
I looked through my photo gallery. His eye contact became poorer starting from 11 months onwards. He had taken all 3 jabs of 5 in 1 then. Took his MMR at 13 months and he started to have some odd behavior at 15 months old.

Bs1970,

For me, the answer is yes. I have read many similar stories of healthy babies' behaviour start to deteriorate after vaccination. In the worst scenario, death occurs. So far, in Singapore not many parents think vaccination is the cause of it as they do not hv information on the side effects of vaccination.

Your observation has shown how vaccination has affected your son's behaviour over time. I would urge u to delay or stop his vaccination in order to prevent his condition from deteriorating.

Do note that vaccines contain preservatives like Mercury, aluminum etc. which is detrimental to one's health, be it an adult or a child. Vaccines not only affects children but teenagers and adults as well.

Thank pingping for all the information. Worst thing is I completed all jab. If I know it early I won't let my baby complete the vaccine so early.
Any research to cue or help after the side effect??
I have visit the autism help forum, too long to read and the recently post abit out of topic and alot advertisement. Called alot private specialists, below is the personally through:
Olive tree - very $$ sign, everything want us to go down and do assessment and sign course. Donot know how they really work.
Spectrum learning - good listener (at least listen what the kid condition), free assessment. Make appt :)
Kid monde - they only accept 3yrs old above kid, but they give us alot reference video and research. Thumb up to their service
Nature pod - request us to go Assessment then further discussion. Also $$$.
http://autismsingapore.com - they believe diet... make appt. They can direct give therapy 1st time. Ard $160/per time. Have not try yet.
Thomson pediatric ctr- child development- they show concerns and give us alot information. Make appt.

Will share my experience to all... I can understand the feeling.

Hope u all also can share ur journey also, work together and give our kid a hope

Hi winniepig,

I just found a link that mentions there is a cure for autism. I read through Dr Mark Hyman's blog and he lists out the protocol using the diet to help the child to be normal. He also explained why the kids become autistic. Do take the time to read.

Hope it could be of some help to all the mothers here. It seems like there is hope but mummies, you must persevere to help yr kids get better as it is a long road to recovery. Jia you!

Can Autism be cured?

Bs1970,

My kids do not have autism. I am sharing in this thread because I want to create awareness on the side effects of vaccination. Abt 6-7 yrs ago, I have shared a lot of info on side effects of vaccination in the vaccine injury thread in smh.

Being an informed parent helps a lot in making decisions for yr kids. I want to let parents know that they have the rights to decline or delay vaccination.

I know roughly on diet for autistic kids is not easy to follow, there are a lot of foods to avoid esp gluten, sugar etc.

You can still prevent yr child from hving more vaccinations at primary school and secondary school. All hope is not lost. Always hv hope and not give up.

Do read up on Dr Hyman's blog which is very informative for parents. When u hv the knowledge on how autism is formed, you can work better with ur therapist and seek the appropriate treatment for yr child.

In fact, I learnt something new abt autism when I read his blog last night. That is, it can be cured but it might take a long time depending on each child's condition. I always thought it can't be cured, but it can only be prevented from deterioration.

Dr Hyman has shared one case study on a 2.5 yr old boy showing improvement following his treatment. I hv posted the link at 12.03am today.

This is the link:

Hi Winniepig,
Sorry for the delayed response. You can check out my friend's specialist/ doctor here http://sundardasnaturopathy.com/ . I hope it benefits your boy too. Jiayou.

Hi Jog,
How much did your friend spend in total in this clinic?
Eh we didn't talk about cost at this clinic but she did mention is not cheap. I think she ever mentioned she spends close to $2K every month on all his treatment, therapy, classes and diet...

Is goat milk casein free?

I have read contradicting reports about it.

Our kids are still young, don't think they can get enough nutrients from rice or soy milk.

How to have casein free diet for a 2 years old?

I came across to know a friend which managed to help a Autism kids. When you called the kid, he will not answer you and will not look at you. But now the kid can have more focus and able to look at the camera now. Is a good news to the mother! If any mummies need help, I can refer you to my friend.

Hi all,

On one hand, It is important to seek early intervention for children with autism, on the other, it is more important to know the area that your child need help with and seek the right intervention. The commonly recommended interventions are Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech Therapy (ST) and Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA).

It is important to know that OT tackles more of the sensory and muscle planning issues, ST works on the speech and ABA works more on the behaviors like eye contact, respond to name, joint attention and compliance. Sometimes, i also recommend parents to know go on ST sessions first if attention and compliance are poor as the ST will not be very fruitful. Work more on the behaviors first before engaging in ST sessions.

Hope it helps.

Hi parents, I teach piano lessons to children on the autism spectrum. For autistic children who respond well to music, music lessons can be a form of enjoyable therapy.

Music lessons are holistic in nature because the student has to work on:
  • Reading skills - read alphabets and musical notes
  • Memory skills - flashcards of rhythm, musical signs
  • Motor skills - playing songs on the piano with both hands
  • Writing skills - theory workbook
I also organize recitals for my students which helps to build their confidence and allows for interaction with other children.
