Hi Mummies,

I just got a referral letter from Polyclinic ytd and would like to seek some advice on KK or NUH better?
I actually opt for NUH as heard a lot people saying KKH nurses very fierce.

Hi, I went to kkh under subsidized too. So far so good. Have yet to meet fierce nurse haha no experience with nuh so can't comment much

I opt for NUH as kkh got long waiting time for Doctor, payment etc and kkh also difficult to find parking lot.

Hello, by using the referral, i am suspecting you intend to be a subsidy patient, this means you will not be allow to choose a doctor, in another words you will be assign to any doctor available. This is applicable to both hospital. Key different between these 2 hospital is that KKH is a woman and children where else nuh is more or less a general hospital. This is not to say that NUH is lousy ya. Both hospital have good and shitty doctor and nurses, incidentally, the other hospital in my view also have their fair share of shitty doctor & nurses too.

In the past, i swear by KKH cos i thot this is the only govt hospital in Singapore that has the best neonate care. But recently, i have 2nd thoughts. Esp after i read some info & realised that NUH has good neonate care too. My choice is always govt hospital cos i'm the type who will always thk -> What if.

I agree with aaa111. There are surely good & bad docs/nurses in all the hospitals. I thot a more practical qn will be your comfort level & distance esp when there is emergency, always good to go to the 1 that is nearest your home.

I just went for my check up with NUH yesterday as a subsidized patient. Appointment was at 3.40pm. But only got to see the doctor at 5.30pm. I guess waiting time is the same as KKH. However, I just realised that for follow up appointments, the scanning date is different from doctor consultation date. For a working mom like me, this means, i have to apply 2 separate days leave for scanning and consultation.
Something for you to consider too ya? :)

U cannot request for blood test & see doc the same date?

NUH is more pro natural than KKH. The doctors there usually don't scan unless necessary whereas KKH will do monthly scan. Delivery wise I think NUH doctors are also more pronatural (less likely to do epitosomy etc ) forKKH it will depend on who is your doctor.
Breastfeeding support wise, I heard NUH is much better. I delivered at KKH before and I was not too happy with the bf support there.

But i thought it would be good to do mthly scan cos u get to see what's yr bb doing in yr tummy :p Am happy to hear the good thgs abt NUH

I did try to request. but they say usually it's on a seperate day. For scanning, no MC will be provided. Doctor consultation there will be MC.
Hello.

Scanning at KKH also no MC given. However you can request for a time chit. * Indicating what time you come in & left the scan clinic. fyi pls

Thanks for the advices! I am planning to go kkh as a sub patient for the first few visits. If everything is okay, I think I will continue to stay as the sub patient. but if not then I shall switch to private.

Wondering is it the same for KKH

Hi ladies. . I just tested positive yesterday morning using the clear blue digital. . Looking around for a gyane now..

Anyone have any female gyane to recommend ? after some consideration I think I still prefer a female gyane. .
I stay jurong area

My wife delivered at both SGH for #1, KKH at #2. Waiting times are similar for both. We were paying private rates at both hospitals.

We recommend KKH simply because it has the entire ecosystem in place for gynae and pd needs. Waiting time is quite a crapshoot especially since it depends on the doctor that you see. If you want to pick your own doctor and he/she is very famous, then it is best to mentally prepare yourselves for a 2 hour wait for each visit.

Unless distance is a real issue, otherwise I would also suggest considering KKH over NUH especially since NUH is really a teaching hospital so if you are a stickler for high standards, you may not take kindly to being treated by more junior doctors especially if you are on subsidized status.

Oh..thanks for telling me that NUH is a training hospital. .. really an important information for me.. so which means if I go NUH as subsidy I will see training doc. . Btw do we need to go polyclinic to get referral letter in order to be subsidy ?

Hello, i believe there are junior doctor in KKH too. Also it does not means that all subsidy patient will only get to see training doctor. Put it this way, if a female beggar walk into KKH with a ultra rare & complicated condition, then after she is saw by the first doctor (Let assume is a super junior doctor, he/she will obviously be not able to handle and will therefore refer to his mentor to manage). Make sense to you?

Subsidy patient need referral letter, alternative is to go to A&E and when they refer you, it will be subsidies status.

Bottomline is very simple, chance of seeing a more junior doctor is higher for subsidy patient especially for those whose condtion are the more normal and common type. For private patient, you get to pick the specific doctor who you think is most capable of helping you.

Also note that i believe subsidy patient cannot choose A ward, this means that your hubby cannot overnight with you during the 2-3 days you are in the hospital after your delivery.

The price difference between a subsidy patient & private patient is huge, i would say nothing less then 40% difference. Therefore it is important that you sit down to discuss this with your hubby after taking into account all these and make an informed decision that meet your needs. No right or wrong ya.

Cheers

I honestly cant remember how much in total the entire process cost. We didnt track the expenses that well since there were so many pre-delivery consultations and scans.

Re: junior doctors - I dont see much of an issue with junior doctors since there is always the issue of professionalism and risk management. If there are any non-routine cases or anomalies spotted, I doubt the hospital would take the risk and let only a junior doctor review such cases. A more senior doctor would surely be brought in to assess the case and follow up if required regardless of the patient's paying status.

The main difference would probably be how one perceives doctors, whether he/she thinks they absolutely must have a very senior person attending to them just to make them feel more at ease.

I delivered last year in KKH under subsidize patient. I still do keep the bill. If anyone wants it for reference, can PM me. I'll share. :)

Yes, like what @aaa111 said, all govt hospital will have junior doctors (those that just grad from med school), not just NUH.
If you are under subsidy program, besides the ward class, you can't choose your gynae. You will instead be assigned to a team of gynae lead by a senior doctor. I don't think your basic health care and treatment will be compromised just simply because there are junior doctors seeing you.
However for some people, it's important that they keep seeing the same gynae or they want a better ward, that's why they chose private rates even though it's more ex.

Hi, just for sharing based on actual experience. Private patient under KKH. When you go to O&G emergency, likely hood is gynae on duty will attend to you. If you are hospitalised for whatever reason, unless you go for min B1 class ward, otherwise will be other gynaes who will attend to you. The only thg is they will incl all records in yr file so that when u see yr gynae the next time, he/she will know what happened.

All govt hospitals are teaching hospitals. I was once admitted to KKH and had 10 training doctors come visit me together with my doctor (who is the specialist). So not entirely true that NUH you will be assigned to the junior ones, try going to KKH during night shift, you may encounter these junior doctors too. All hospitals have both senior and junior doctors however if its a complicated or emergency case, of course they will assign a more senior doctor to you. Both NUH and KKH have their supporters. KKH is a hospital dedicated to children and women and hence they have more specialists and may be more prepared and equipped for complications. However my SIL who is a nurse told me that most nurses go to NUH instead because they are equally good in terms of skills but better in service. So it really depends on individual.

Hello,

Nurses is actually just like another job that u and me hold. There are usually a lot of pull & push factors why we move from one job to the other. I think nurses do behave in the exact same way as us when they decide to move. such as salary, Career progression, nearer to home, kakis move over, doctor over here too on the ball, overwork etc.

KKH day in & day out only handle children, applying the law of average and holding all things constant, they naturally will be more familar with children & woman medical issues. Chances of them tackling more complicated and rare issues are more frequent as compare to other general hospital, having said that, this does not means that other general hospital are lousy. There can be more then 2 "gooder" hospital on our island ya. Cheers

Hi I think you misinterpret my message earlier. I meant that the nurses choose to deliver their babies at NUH instead of KKH, I didn't mean to work there.

Hello mummy. oops. you are correct. i read too fast and misinterpret your email. Incidentally i believe nurse should enjoy special discount if they choose to give birth in their own hospital (My guess only). But these nurses from KKH choose to go to NUH to give birth instead surely means NUH service must be top notch.

I prefer NUH over KKH. Went to both and my experience at KKH was terrible. The waiting time and the nurses. For NUH, I've never had a single negative experience with nurses or doc so I highly recommend NUH!

Hi.. are u under subsidized patient or private for NUH?

I will be transferring to NUH in 2 weeks time. Up to week 29 I was in KKH under subsidised. So far no negative feedback. Waiting time is actually very short, if your appointment early in the morning. The later the appointment, the longer waiting time. But overall I never waited longer than 1 hour. The doctors and nurses were fine, especially the last one. Once she found out that I'm switching the hospital, she volunteered to print out all my tests and ultrasound reports and gave it to me on the spot.

So far I have no experience with NUH doctors other than the hospital tour. Personally I don't like the location of the hospital and very complicated links between buildings (my husband was so mad when he got lost there, hehe). But as long as doctors/nurses are good, I don't care about the facilities. I will be under private there, so will share my experience later.

Your experience sounds positive! Then why r u still switching?

Switching because I'm planning to go for natural (probably water) birth, which is not available in KKH.

Hi, are you able to share the subsidized rate for NUH consultation cost, ultrasound, OSCAR test and Detailed Fetal test?
