Did a hcg urine test before taking a X-ray and found out I was pregnant. I should be pregnant for 5 weeks and when i called a popular clinic at mount e novena today, the receptionist told me I have to wait till week 7 before they can scan for anything. I read threads about taking blood test to check for progesterone level. Is that the norm to only have your first visit at week 7?

I was told by a GP that better to go between 6-8 weeks to see the fetus on ultrasound. Perhaps that's just the norm in Singapore?
Also called a popular doctors office yesterday, flat out got told he won't even consider seeing me until at least week 8-

my understanding is if go too early, doctor may not able to hear the baby heart beat too, thats y they recommend to go around wk7-wk8.
last time when i find out wifey pregnant at wk4, we call to book a gynae at KKH and our 1st appointment was scheduled at around wk10-11 due to that gynae appointment was full in the earlier wk.

However, please start to consume folic acid from now.

I did 3 times ivf in sg and didn't managed to get pregnant so this natural pregnancy was precious to us. I'm afriad my hormones level are not idea for my fetus to survive till week 7. I managed to get another appointment with another doctor today and will update if the test is necessary.

Ya I started the folic only on the day that I found out I was pregnant. Previously still eat a lot of other medications, really scared it might affect the fetus already..

Cos when I was doing ivf, the clinic will do blood test to make sure the hormones level are good at least while carrying the baby, if certain areas are not idea, they can be helped by supplements. Let me check with the doc and see if the test is necessary.

I just went to the doc and heard my baby's heart beat! It's at 96 a bit slow and really hope the heart beat can pick up to 100 plus in the next 2 weeks. Given hormonal support as well and the advice given by the doc really makes me at ease. At least I know what to do till the next visit!

Hi, is it common to visit few gynae before shortlisting one? 1st pregnancy, not so familiar what are the usual things to do. Wife test positive twice on urine kit 3 days ago.

Did some research reading and made an appointment with Dr Hong Sze Ching from Mount A. Was told abit too early to see, hence they arranged 2 weeks later, end May.

- What to expect for the 1st appointment?
- Will they asked you to confirm anything or book next appointment after the 1st visit?
- Is it common or strange upon seeing 1 gynae, n book another appointment with another gynae for 2nd opinion?
- comparing TMC and Mount A, any feedback or recommended gynae?
- wife is age 39 this year, is it consider high risk pregnancy? If so, is it better to find a gynae specialise with high risk delivery? She would prefer natural birth as much as possible
- anything else I should research and find out more to be more prepared?

hi u can try dr edwin at mount Elizabeth novena.they also hv inhouse usg scan and other scan facilities. cost slightly onhigher side but less than very fancily priced gynae

Hi all.

Thanks for all the useful tips. Newbie here. :) I now struggle to find good female gynae. 1st choice is Dr Goh Shen Li (Mt A), her consultation is expensive & she's very popular. Next available date is 4 June :(

2nd option is Dr Jocelyn Goh (Mt A). Also another expensive & popular Dr. I just booked appointment with her & the nurse said consultation max 15 mins only & if exceed time, need to pay additional $38 (WHATTT). Haven't even start the consultation with her, but I feel lazy to go already o_O

Now still searching for others female gynae.

Hi, I went and had a consultation with Dr Goh Shen Li and really liked her!
She’s very friendly, soft spoken and professional, I felt very comfortable with her. I’m also evaluating 3 other OBs and consultation charges are all similar, actually the one I went at Mt Elizabeth Orchard was by far the most expensive one ( both the scan and urine test strip was double the cost of Dr Goh’s).
How far along are you? I went rather early as also didn’t want to wait... and ended up just spending money and not being able to talk properly on anything as it was too early... June 4 is only 2 weeks and a bit away so if you are in early stages can wait? Or do see abother Ob in the meantime and evaluate. I ended up not shortlisting, but another names I had when searching for female OBs were Dr Cindy Pang, Wendy Teo and JJ Chee

good luck!

Hi! Thanks for the information. I decided will try Dr Sim Lee Ngor instead. Saw the review that she's good gynae.

Since this is my 1st child & my pregnancy is early so I would like to see gynae soonest, to make sure all is ok & smooth :) If Dr Sim is OK & as good as the review say, I will stick with her. If she's not that good, I may try Dr Goh Shen Li :D

Congrats!! I love how you are such a hands-on hubby. So rare!

I saw 2 docs before I decided on the doc that I wanted. First appointment the doc will do a scan, it can be a vaginal scan, so they can see clearer images. You will see your little bubs inside and also hear the heartbeat. I am delivering this year, 38 years old. First baby. So I was kiasu and went to the polyclinic to get a referral and got the subsidised route to KKH. In the event there are any complications, I will fall back on the subsidised route, so will not be so expensive. Whichever doctor you choose, most important thing is that you and your wife need to feel comfortable with him/her.

After reading the forum pages here, I went with Dr CK Khoo at Mount E Novena. He was the 2nd doctor I visited. The first one I was not so comfortable.. her nurse very fierce. haha. Dr Khoo used to be a KKH doc and came out to set up his own private practice. My first visit, he told he he has like the record number of births done at KKH. So I guess he has seen almost everything ald. I think he was also in the news last year for delivering twins to the oldest mum in SG. He's very friendly and approachable, super chill kind of doctor, will spend the time to sit and talk with you and explain things to you. I feel I can ask him any kind of question and not feel stupid, haha. Some of the more popular doctors can't give so much time to each patient. He's pro natural as well. I kept asking him at my age if I will have any complications, and he assured me that he won't get me there. When he found out that I was at KKH subsidised, he also advised me to do my scans there, then just bring the result back to him, to save me some money.

Some of the things you can find out at your doctors, if they offer packages. Quite common for them to offer packages in the 2nd trimester. Because of COVID, doctors can only deliver at 1 hospital unlike before, so you will have to be ok with the hospital and the costs at where your doctor delivers. You may want to check on the hospital charges too and what freebies the hospital gives to the mamas. Also the costs of the tests/ vaccinations that you need to do at each milestone. These are usually charged separate from the package/ consult fees.

Also, it is useful for your wife to join the Whatsapp groups for mamas that are due in the same month. I found it very useful as a first-time-mum. Or do a search on FB, join the Mummies-to-be FB groups. A lot of people share information there.

All the best!

By the way, they just got their 1st baby in early March this year but his wife was back to KKH in end Mar and start seeing patient liao. And his wife do tell us where (PUPSIK) to search for baby stuff as she getting most of the thing from PUPSIK. We are looking forward to meet our 1st baby in coming July too.

Thank you so much for the info, really greatly appreciated. Our appt is next week with Dr Hong at Mount A. I will also do some research to find out about Dr CK Khoo too. Is it fine if we arrange another appt with Dr Khoo to review too?

Not sure if is relevant; previously we have seen Dr Tan Cheng Hao for IVF as walk-in. not sure whether we are consider subsided or pte.

Another qns which is bothering me and my wife. For those sliced fish soup, mostly are using batang fish (Spanish mackeral), is it ok for my wife to eat? some said ok, some said is consider high metal/mercury.
Also for papaya, some said good while some article said avoid.

Research till confused (-_-)"

I feel you! So much contradicting information online, I think best not to dwell so much on them. The standard of staying clear away from soft cheese, raw meat, raw eggs, unwashed vege I’ve been following. For fruit, I’ve mostly seen papaya and pineapple are no-go, but some also say mango which I decided to ignore

If there’s a particular type of food your wife is eating a lot, I would just ask the doctor if that’s safe, best to check directly!

best of luck!

yes, try to minimize as much until we are seeing the gynae this coming Thurs.
We went to see GP on Sunday after she have a sudden pain, and being refer to KK A&E. did a scan and luckily everything seem fine. saw the small heart beat too :)

I using this app which is useful to check what are the types of foods to eat at all stages. Huge database but the downside of the app is in mandarin. And need to type in Chinese to check.

Hi there, may I know what app are you using? I am looking for such an app currently, thank you.

Thank you! Super helpful! do you mind sharing which insurances your considered? And is this the insurance for birth/emergency only coverage? Or to cover both pre natal and delivery? Thanks!

Hi i only considered the standalone ones and went with Great Eastern. It covers for both mummy for pregnancy complications and baby for congenital defects. As for baby life plan, there’s a guaranteed insured benefit i can use once baby is born and i can cover baby without underwriting.

I am with Wendy Teo. I like it that the recept nurses are very patience in answering my questions. And her appointment timings are always on time and don’t have to wait long, maybe 5-10 minutes i’m in the room already.

She is not so strict about diet as compared to what I heard about other gynaes. Go prepared with questions.

That’s my experience so far, #1 so not delivered by her yet.

We are with Dr Ben Choey at AMK Ave. This is our first pregnancy. My wife was 11 days late for her period so she decided to take a pregnancy test which gave a positive result. We went to Dr Ben Choey but since my wife was still in her 5th week we were also asked to return after a week or two since it was still too early. An ultrasound wasn't required then cause the baby's heartbeat won't be felt. But he did prescribe vitamins and meds for spotting.
