Eye doctor to check for squint (strabismus/misaligned eyes)

Hi All,
Brought my son 2.5yrs to KKH eye specialist last month. Seen dr zenna lim for his squint. He was tested having severe myopia. Right eye > -10.00, Left eye -7.00. None in our family has such severe myopia cases. Nevertheless, we have to put him on glasses. Was told no surgery for his age and wearing glasses is the only solution for now.

Yesterday when back for 2nd review and need to start on patching 2hrs daily for him. Bought the ortopad but my boy is not comfy on it so thou of changing to those reuseable cloth type. May I know where can I purchase those with printed cartoon characters?

pls advise.... thanks!

Hi,
my girl have squint too. she need to patch her left eye 3hrs daily. But she will cry and scream if we paste the pad on her eye, seem like very uncomfortable. We went to get some children sunglasses and break the lens on the right side and paste the patches on the right side. she fine with this.

Hi, we stick my son's fav cartoon character stickers on the pad and gave him a toy gun. made him look like a pirate! haha think he is accepting it...

hi, my 2.5mth son just removed the lens in his right eye cos of congenital cataract. my PD opthamologist wanted us to make a pair of specs that is 2400 degrees. i've visited many optical shops but the highest degree available (for plastic lens which is safer for babies) is 2000.

1) Anyone has any contact for optical shops that make plastic lens specs for 2400 degrees

2) has anyone used the Como brand of infant spectacles and how's the feedback like? i've come across various brands of baby specs e.g. Como, Zeiss and Solo Bambini and wondering which is the best?

i notice this when my 2.5yr old is watching TV programs...

he will look straight at the TV but after a while, he will tend to shift his head to the left so that he is watching from the corner of his eyes... when asked to look straight, he will shift his head back straight ahead... but after a while, he will shift to the right and the cycle goes on...

does he have lazy eyes??!??

hi,
i think it would be a good thing to bring your son to a pediatric ophtomologist. There are some in private practice but if you are not in a hurry, i think you can get a referral from the polyclinic to see one at a government funded hospital.

earliest date available for Dr. Ling is March!! and Dr. Quah is 26 Jan... but had booked appt for 18th Jan with Dr Leo Seo Wei @ TTSH instead... she's a friend of my gynae and so i will see how it goes...

Hi,

anyone have send their kids for surgery on squint? Successful? Which doc?
My boy, 3yr 2months now, his squint is getting worse from apr 2010 when we first noticed! His daily patch of 1hr is not helping at all. His is both eyes, hence we patch one eye alternate daily. So worrying! Seeing his eye ball looking upwards every now and then make my heart ache

Hi Joey,

I tot of sending my girl (7yo) for surgery too last yr before she enteres P1 but doctor discourages me. She said that even after surgery, it may not be 100% corrected.

Likewise for my 3+yo boy, doc says he is too young for ops.

hi ms rainbow - not sure if u had made the specs for ur son. my son made he's 1st specs at 11mths. it was done at a shop at wisma. not sure if they carry the degree that you want. u may want to call & check. pm me if u need the contact.

hi joey - my son had squint surgery when he was just b4 18mths. it was a day surgery to loosen one of sides of the muscle of one of the eye. was told the nature of such surgery is that it cannot be 100% accurate. after surgery the eye may still be a little in or out. now he's 3.5 yrs. looking back at the pics taken when he was small, he's eyes were noticeably more 'normal' now. but doc did mention it's still not straight. may need another surgery this yr to correct.

hi joey , there's this american website,
littlefoureyes.com that has a wealth of information that you may find useful. It is mostly written by parents for parents.

Mummies, thanks! Dr told me no guarantee can fix it. I can tell that my boy is getting annoyed when we remind him to use 2 eyes. He started to ignore us already. Initially he'll correct his eyes immeditaely, but now.. Wonder is he already thought he is using 2eyes or he is feelin helpless as well. So heartache to see him like that.

Hi all parents,

My girl got squint and I need to make a pair of glasses for her. May i have the contact for the optical shop that can make glasses for toddler? My girl is 3.5yrs. Thanks in advance.

Anyone visited Dr Khoo at paragon? I'm changing my son fr Dr Yvonne at KKH to Dr Khoo..

Get pretty annoyed that Dr Yvonne always give different advice on different apt. Think she see too many patients till she has no time to really read the profile of each patient..

After patching for 1yr+ still not improving. Now is almost like constantly u will see one eye looking upwards. Rarely will get to see him both eyes looking "sharp" at the same time. Is always that one eye dazing upwards. So heartbreaking...

anyone knows where to find miraflex frames?... long ago, i got my gal a pair from katong but the shop no longer carries them. Have considered swiss flex but they look so thin, i'm worried abt the sturdiness...

ojx, my gal had her op when she was 22mo to loosen her muscles...now at 3.5, the doc says she mite need 2nd op to tighten the muscles cos still not good enuff tho we dun see major issues.. they stuck prisms film on her glasses for almost 2mths, so that they can catch a more accurate measurement of her squint. But the the pre-op assessment, the doc noticed that she sometimes squint less, so the op was cancelled!! also, we have been patching her since 2009 and it has been reduced from 3hr to 2 hr to 1hr now!

*fingers crossed* they may be hope still...

hang on mummies!

Hi, I got mine at city optic in amk. Google the name, should be able to find it. If cannot, pls pm me. Nanyang optic also selling but their price is more ex.

Hi, I will like to find out if any of your child has undergone surgery for squint ? My daughter is 5 year old going on 6 in a few months, and have been seeing Dr Pauline Cheong since she was 2 plus. She has intermittent exotropia in one eye, like a intermittent squint that moves outwards only when she's tired and frequent rubbing of eyes. Its not noticeable at all, but there are moments I see in for a few seconds esp when she is tired and she tends to rub that eye frequently.

We tried patching for years, and eysterday Dr pauline said the improvement is not significant. her long distance 3D is not good.
She suggested surgery and wanted to find out how was the procedure before and after .. any advice will be appreciated! thank you !

I am worried about the risk involved - over corretion or under correction.

Hi,

my gal is coming to 16 months old and was told by Dr Khoo Boo Kian to go for surgery for both eyes to lossen the inner muscles due to convergent squint. He did not suggest patching at all and said that this has to be corrected ASAP before turning 18 mths. So that she can develop 3D vision. He and his staff have checked my gal for longsightedness and any growth inside the eyes. The results are nill. I am so worried about surgery especially I heard that it may not work the first time and also both her eyes will be operated. Can someone whose babies also has convergent squint kindly advise? Tks a lot.

Hi jhmum, dr Khoo said that to my gal when she was two and hence I went dr pauline instead cos I believe should try patching first . I am not comfortable with dr Khoo as the first thing he said was to suggest surgery without other advise

Hi my son had squint surgery by dr Khoo b4@ 16mths. Pls chk back archive for short description of the surgery process.

I was also initially apprehensive when told to go for surgery but my son did not improve much after 6 mths of being on specs n dr Khoo also mentioned better to do b4 18mths so we went ahead.

Hi,

My son also has conergent squint. We went to see Dr Khoo at first but was told he needs surgery to corrct it but success rate only 5-10%. So we decided to switch to govt, and went to see Dr Yvonne Ling at SNEC, but was told the same thing. Except she told us to return 3 months later for a review and when we returned, we were told our son's vision had dropped which we were not warned about before. I'm realy hesitant about letting my son have the surgery since he's only 9 months old. But that seems like the only option for now, and patchin apparently is not a solution. Can anyone with similar experience advise? Can TCM help?

Hi,

My hubby bought my gal to see a TCM doctor at Lorong Lew Lian for massage two weeks ago as he heard from his teacher (he is taking part time TCM course) that massage can help. But my gal dont let the TCM doctor touches her at all. She keeps crying and struggling. So in the end, TCM doctor teaches my hubby how to do it. Parents have to do for the child daily. Unfortunately, my hubby has not been able to massage for my gal so far. We are afraid that being unskilled, we may not be doing correctly for her. She also don't like to be massaged on the face. You can give the TCM doctor a try if you wish. So now, my gal is doing patching on Dr Pauline's advice. She concluded that my gal right eye is lazy. So needs to patch the left eye. Looks like I have to see a third dr as the diagnosis seems different. So stressed...

Hi,

I'm glad i find some comfort over here. I just brought my 2yr old gal to KKH for eye review as we suspected she has squint eye.

To my shocking news, dr said she has very high astigmatism of 350 & 500 and must prescribe spec. Dr said there wasnt any sign of squint eye.

I'm planning to seek 2nd opinion. May i know is there any parent whose kid have high astigmatism at such young age?

How do i encourage her to wear spec?

Thanks

Hi

My boy has been blinking his eyes a lot lately and when I asked him y, he said, there's light and he felt uncomfortable. However, even when the light is dim, he's also complaining of light shinning into his eyes which made him kept blinking. Anybody had encountered this? What's wrong with his eyes?
Thanks.

My toddler gal was blinking a lot too and we realised it was a food allergy. But we brought her to check her eyes and also found some astigmatism. The blinking has stopped but she needs to wear spectacles. Where can I get Miraflex frames in Singapore?

Oh yes, just want to share, don't bother going to those optical centres that claim to use high technology for checking young kids' eyes without dilation eye drops. Waste of money.

End up they gave me a scarily different reading from what the eye doctor gave. They said she was badly far-sighted (and the reading was 600+)! While the eye doc (who used a 99% accurate method) said no far-sightedness, only slight astigmatism and veering towards short-sightedness in future (more likely since we have family history).

Can you imagine the relief?!

My gal is having intermittent squint & she is having her operation at KKH on 22nd Mar. Doctor says success rate is 70% & the doctor is Doc Quah Boon Long.

Anyone has any feedback on that.

My 3 years old gal got cataract and noticed in the posting that Ms Rainbow's son ever done cataract removal surgery. May i know which doctor? Any recommendation for good doctor can do surgery for children catract? Thanks

I am so worried. My daughter's teacher commented that she has judgement issue in school and can't seem to see properly. I will be bringing her for an eye check-up at Dr Khoo's clinic at paragon... can anyone share the check-up experiences at Dr Khoo's clinic? TIA.

we are suspecting it could be lazy eye or squint. She's 2.5 years old now, really hoping it's nothing serious.

my 3 year old have strabismus too. I am patching her, we ve been doing for a year. not much improvement. when she is older i will try to do some eye therapy with her. if v serious i think surgery is the only option to correct it, but it wont make her vision well.

Hi,if u are thinking of seeking pte eye surgeon,u can call any of the doc or their staff at eye clinic in camden medical centre.they have visiting children eye surgeon under dr ang beng chong's team

Hi

Have anyone of your babies have inverted eyelashes ?
My son's lower eyelid the eyelashes are inverted and causing his eyes to be teary.

Not sure what to do. Pls share your experiences if any. thanks

hi Ice Mummy, hope the operation went well for your gal.. can u pls share with me your gal experience? pain? can see any difference/improvement with her eyes? will u recommend dr Quah? my girl is seeing dr pauline ling now.. and might need surgery as well.. not sure to let her do or not..

Hi All mummies,

Need some advice here...my DS has been with Dr Paulene Cheong of Gleneagle for close to a year. He has lazy eyes due to astigmatism and this also causes his eyes to drift a part when looking straight.

Wearing patches for close to a year and also spectavles to control his astigmatism. But to no avail. in fact, we just checked and it worsen the lazy eyes condition and Dr said his 3D vision gets worse compare to a year ago.

Last resort is to go for a surgery which she claims 80% success rate.

My questions:
1. any other good and recommended Paedeatric Opthalmologist that we can seek another opinion on? Dr Paulene cheong may be good, but i don't really like the eyes screening optometrist. Not good in handling children, no patience. I have no confidence on the test results too.

2. For those that went for surgery, please share experience...Take how long to recover? pain? side effect?Risk etc...

Thanks,
starynite

i am so gald i read up and chance upon tis thread.

i discovered my boi having squint early this yr but i didnt realise the seriousness of this issue until last wk something in me prompted me to do a check up for him. i went to dr quah yest, and perhaps he was busy, he doesnt really provide much info and advise to me. if only i ask then he reply...... he say there is no preventive n corrective actions we can do. if i wan can try patching but its not scientifically proven tat patching helps....

since he is so call the head of the head, shd i proceed with him or chg doc to Dr Yvonne?

review is due 3 mths later. i feel so helpless when i realised its serious.......

those mummies with kids tat went thru the surgery, did the surgery help? how's ur kid coping with the aft surgery?
