Eye doctor to check for squint (strabismus/misaligned eyes)

Hi mummies,

My 8 month old boy was confirmed to have lazy eye and very severe myopia with high astigmatism >10.00 in his Left eye 1 month. Bought him a pair of miraflex from Newman Optics at Bedok which was recommended by Dr Leo. I am amazed that my brave boy had an enjoyable experience there and liked the spectacle almost immediately.

I have seen Dr Leo Seo Wei at Mt E and Dr Yvonne Ling at Gleneagles a week ago. Both Doctors have advised me to start patching but my boy cries when I put on the patch and he will struggle to pull the eye patch off.. I feel so helpless..

Can anyone with similiar experience please advise? Is there other eye patch available in the market other than ortopad? How can I help my baby?
 


Which type of ortho pad he is using? Th e one directly Patchingon eyes or the one patch on spectacles. Serve same purpose. The one on spec is more comfortable than the other. Not so hot.

I had squint since young and I went for the surgery when I was 23 years old. Not sure if the procedures are similar for children, but here is my experience.

I was put on GA and when I woke up, the surgeon did a final adjustment whereby I was to comment whether what I see on left eye is on level with my right eye. But will have double vision as in things will overlap when see with both eyes. Once the effect of the LA is gone, got to take painkiller. Cant really open the eyes after the operation. The next day when I woke up, I cant open my eyes cos of the 'yan shi' plus I think also partially due to the drying up of the eye drop. But it's still quite painful. So got to take painkiller and slowly open the eyes. My mum kept helping me to clear away the 'yan shi'. I think i'm quite lucky cos the next day when i woke up, no more double vision. But will take a few days before can open the eyes normally which seems to be an easy task when we wake up.

I think cos I did the surgery at a much later stage, my 3D vision is bad. I can only see 3D if the screen is big enough. So those 3D tv, I see it as a normal tv. My side effect of the operation is I got abit of astig (0.75) and an slight increase in short sightedness (0.75). The other thing I experienced was alight variation in short sightedness for a few months. Thereafter it stablised.

Hope my experience can help those deciding whether to get their child for the operation.

She is very patient and good with children.

I just brought my daughter for a review at Dr Khoo boo Kian's clinic. He mentioned my girl still has intermittent squint but her eyesight is good. We do not need to do anything and just need to go back for a review half a year later. He also said it will not improve and the only way is to go for surgery when she's older. I'm getting quite concerned because I don't want to just sit down and do nothing and wait for the condition to worsen. Is there anything I can do to try improve her squint or shoud I seek a second opinion from another doctor?
 
Hi, my child had her squint surgery completed successfully by dr pauline Cheong a year ago. I have visited dr Khoo 4.5 years ago when we detected the squint and he suggested surgery which I am not receptive towards it at that point in time. Seeker second opinion with dr pauline who suggested the patching method which we did for years and only attained slight improvement. Hence dr pauline suggested surgery and note that this is best done before school going age . Highly recommend dr pauline and another forum mom whom I have recommended also brought her child to dr pauline

My son has gone through the surgery last week with Dr Pauline Cheong and no longer needs the patch. She can be a rather strict doctor but at the same time after the surgery, i do see the soft side of her.

His eyes are much better, rather straight now and doctor needs to "play" around with his degree to get accurate reading. Thus have to replace his lens as and when required. Cost is as above.

Btw, anyone keen in my balance eye patches?
 
suspect that my ds has squint and got a referral letter to go KKH this coming friday.

How do the doctors at KKH check for squint? how long is the whole process??
 
After today check up at eye clinic.. dr suspect he has squint but they cannot confirm it coz the degree is abt 100.. which dr mention it is still within the normal range..
so he will need to go back to the eye clinic to reconfirm the squint again after putting some eye drops for 3 days..
throughout the whole examination..ds is super irritated..crying and screaming..seriously i dont know if the readings are accurate..
any mummies went through this??
 
My boi's first 2-3 visits are to dr Quah from sgh but I find him too "cold blooded". Perhaps squint to him is a daily thing he face but to us mummies, it's a big stone in our hearts.

If I don ask him questions, he don bother to explain further or give any comments. It's always reviews n reviews n if squint still present, then go for op. nothing elaborate on the op n risks as well.

He doesn't offend me but I juz don feel the personal touch from him. I'm scare he will treat my boi juz like a "thing" on his op table....

Upon recommendations above, I brought my boi to dr Pauline cheong last thurs. I'm more comfy wif her, shall stick to dr Pauline for reviews.....
 
Poseidon, my boi was diagnosed wif squint but he don hv far sightedness, he has perfect eyesight.

So it's not necessary to hv far sightedness to hv squint.
Perhaps at kkh u see is not a snr consultant? I had enuff of kkh junior docs inexperience comments and I feel tat my kid is treated as a Ginea pig (for another medical prob previously). Hence I nvr chose to go to junior docs for bigger issues. Their inexperience comments creates unnecessary worry for us n unnecessary tests sometimes for the kids.

we went to polyclinic to get referral doc. we dont get to see dr pauline cheong often but on a few times before the surgery and post surgery like twice. yesterday we brought him for review and dr cheong didnt see my son.

we went through the eye drops twice to get accurate degree reading. i think it is accurate.

anyone keen? $10 each box. if you get it from outside it will cost you $15 or $17.

Dr Swati Handa is my ds doctor...she is an indian lady..anyone child is seeing the same doctor? Any feedback? I find that she is quite junior..

I am considering to seek 2nd opinion for my daughter on squint eyes. So far, i'm shortlising Dr Pauline Cheong (Gleaneagles) and Dr Leo (Mt E).

Can any mothers provide some objective feedback on these 2 doctors? Are they doctors who are "Pro-surgery"?

Please help.

Hi, I was told by KKH that you go through polyclinic to get a referral letter, you are then a subsidized patient. However, you are not able to choose a doctor. So, if you only want to see Dr. Quah, it's still possible, but it'll be under private patient (even if you have a referral letter) and charged under private rates, which comes up to about the same as other private hospitals.

Hi Poseidon

My girl is also seeing Dr Swati. I don't know if she's junior. She diagnosed my girl 2 times and said she's ok (the nose-bridge thingy). Though there's slight improvement without any intervention, it's been 1 year since i last saw her and it's still not perfect.

I'm also concerned that this is the opinion of just 1 doctor.
 
It has been a long time since I posted in this tread... ds undergo the knife for his strabismus 9 mth ago by Dr Cheong. Up till now so far so good.. keeping my fingers cross..

My girl is currently 11 months and she has squint and we have seen doctor Pauline cheong since December last year.

We have do the patch for few months but seems like no improvement so doctor advise for surgery.

so would appreciate mummy who encounter this before to provide advise and what are the things we need to take note as she is still so young.

Also would like to see if we shall wait when she is older and if seek second opinion will be better.
 
Hi mummies, can i check whats the visible symptom to know if kid have strabismus? My kid had astigmastism and wore glasses for 2 yrs, since den doc advice to remove her from glasses as her vision improved.
Now she will keep blinking, one eye open bigger den the other.. N she doesnt look straight... Any advice? Thx
 
Mummylee85.. how did you manage to detect your girl squint at such an early stage? is your girl having intermittent squint ?
Y didn't dr cheong suggest glasses? Check with Dr cheong if there is any chance your girl may outgrow the squint.

seek 2nd opinion.. a gd doc will be Dr Khoo at paragon. He is very experience ( and expensive ).

Hi poseidon_gal, we notice that her eyes always move inward and the PD also suspect so recommend us to do a eye check at this spectacle shop for baby( forget about the name). so she recommend us to see eye specialist. Thus we went to see Dr Pauline. And she has let my girl do the patching for few months, and her condition don't really improve so she say the chance of outgrow is less lightly so suggest us to do the ops.

However, I have make an appointment to see Dr Khoo this coming Monday.

Thanks for your advise. Do u have a similar situation b4? U seems to have a good understanding of squint.

my situation is almost the same.

suspected pseudo squint by the 2 PD we go to.

(when kid was 1 year old)
went to 1 eye check next to Dr Janice wong's clinic at TMC (forgot the name of that eye check clinic, and yes, Dr. Janice Wong is the kid's PD)
no squint and appeared because of the asian look
(but came with -2 Myopia but was told not to worry as it will get better)

thus we totally forgotten about the whole matter.


Came 3-4 months ago, another neighbour PD insisted that we go check the pseudo squint again. since we know its not real, we went thru the Polyclinic --> KKH method.

visit KKH last wednesday, consulted a few docs including Dr. Audrey Chia. no Squint but had a -7.

TOTALLY heart broken.

Thurs, booked an appt with Dr. Leo at Mt E.

Friday, consulted Dr. Leo, same reading...-7.

Saturday, made his specs, went to USS the same evening (for the nth time). i can't image all the time my son was at USS, his impression of USS were the words we spoke, the blur images and the sound he heard.

Today, went to Kindergarten wearing his near specs for the 3rd day. So far so good.


He is only 2 years and 8 month old.
 
Did anyone of you went to eyecheck with cordlife? / Did you receive email from cordlife about eye check?

I went there last week for both of my children. .. it’s pretty cool as my children were not yelling during the eye check as they liked to do that in the routine check up with my paediatrician. I’m quite amazed by the process as it is really fast! Anyway my child has slight astigmatism and need to really restrict them from watching ipad!

Anyway, my son is 1 year olds and my husband and i are both myopic with pretty high degree so i thought of bringing my son for an eye check up so that maybe we can detect myopia earlier and hopefully recover from it.

So any recommendation?

Yeah, i went to Eyescreen with my sis-in-law two weeks ago! That's for my nephew who is turning 4 years old this year. He hasn't done any eye check before since born and happened that my sis in law is a cordlife member and got the email from them....

It's eye opening to me as i didn't know the kids need to check the eyesight (only know that we need to bring kids for dental check instead..) .. To my surprise, my nephew didn't cry at all and he enjoyed the eye check very much... most importantly , his eyesight is normal :p

My sister-in-law / who is also cordlife member got special price for the eye check.. :p

Pauline Cheong and a Dr Sonal (anyone heard abt her) all have visiting consultation with snec of kkh so I really dunno if i shld go to them since Dr quah is the head of pediatric opthalmology at both places.

My girl go through the surgery in 2015, think we paid about 4k plus after medisave. We are not able to claim as it deemed as Pre-existing condition because we bought the insurance after we notice she got the problem but before surgery. So far it has been about 4 years plus, still straight as we still have a half yearly follow-up, but her 3D vision is not good.

However, as per the doctor. Not all kids can have straight after 1 surgery, it depend on case by case basis.

I had a very bad experience with Dr. Sonal Farzavandi at SNEC for my little one. Can you guys please suggest some eye specialists (very patient with babies) for infants with lazy eye.
 
My niece went to Dr Steve Seah for squint assessment. The doctor was very thorough with his checkup and patient with my fussy young niece. He and his nurses were also quite kind and friendly. More importantly, Dr Seah was knowledgable and recommended a treatment that worked. I do recommend him to anyone looking for an all-around ophthalmologist.
