Bad Oscar Test Results

Hi Jasmine,

Do you intend to go for amino??

Mine also came back with poor results.. and went for second opinion and doc says everything measures well except for the thickness of the neck.

I am so worried and dont know if i should go for the amino test.

Not sure if this helps.
My cousin too had poor result. Not sure how poor was it as I got to know about this way after her daughter was born. Her reason was, she was very scared, stress and worried. She just kept praying all will turn well.
True enough, her daughter was well despite the result.

Morning Su_yana,

Thast what a lot of my friends n relatives told me. I just can't help worrying. I have went for 2nd opinion and all seems well, except for the think NT.

I am in a dilemma now

My bb NT was 2.6mm n considered as poor result. After factoring blood test result my probability was 1:248. So I took the cvs test for peace of mind. Glad everything turned out well. My bb is a healthy active 1 yr old now.

Oscar test isn't compulsory. Some mums skip it n take the blood test at wk20. Some skip both tests.

Morning Chevelle (chevelle)

What is your result? I had mine result last week, and the docotor recommend to do Amnio, i am going on this Frid

Hi Joyceli,

Mine NT was @ 2.1mm and 1:35, how about urs?

Mine has been scheduled on next friday and is still deciding to go or not.

I didnt really like the sanographer who did the scan for me during my Oscar test. she was quite impatient and frustrated when my baby is still not in the correct position for the scan.

Hi Chevelle

Hope it's still in time, you can go for 2nd opion for the oscar, the dr at Candom medical is very nice and professional. i went today,he checked said my baby is normal.

Hi Joyceli,

I also went to the dr at Camden Medical. He scan and told me that everything about the baby is good except for the thick neck measurement.

Is the NT still at 3.7mm or its lower?

Hi! I did the Oscar test and a CVS test with Dr. TC Cheng at Thompson Medical Centre for my first pregnancy. He is a specialist in this field. My OBGYN referred me to him for this test. Both my Oscar and CVS test had very bad results. I have researched a lot about the Oscar & CVS test, you can PM me if you have any questions.

My Oscar result is 1:12. This worries me a lot. After checking with my galfriends and on forum, mine seems to be the highest risk.

Alicia, did your gynae suggest further checks/next steps? However do bear in mind that there is a chance of "false positive" results for Oscar, hence do seek further clarification on your test result.

Hi Viiv, My gynea is from gleneagle. We got the result last Fri and he has arrange me for CVS at NUH this wens. We may discuss with the specialist there before decide to either go for CVS or wait till 20wks for amnio. My friend says her colleague went for amnio and had miscarriage. But the result stated baby was fine. Sounds so scary.

This is my 2nd pregnancy and I'm 33 this year. We've wanted a 2nd child but never been able to conceive for 3-4 years. After visiting my gynea, he prescribe me clomid pills and I got pregnant the 2nd month! I was curious that he asked me to go for the Oscar scan, which I thought only mothers over 35 are advices to take the test. I guess the pills might have some side effect.

I might not put my baby on miscarriage risk if my result is higher figure, but 1:12!!!! I wonder how accurate is this Oscar test.

Hi Alicia, I also had the Oscar test though I'm turning 31 this year. Guess it's best to meet the specialist before deciding further.

At the same time, I found this thread on sgmotherhood discussing about genetic scan fr Prof Ananda at Camden medical centre. If you read the thread, there were others with bad result who went for further scan with Ananda and turns out, their Down syndrome risk is low and hence they didn't proceed further with amnio or CVS. You may wish to read the thread for more info. I can't comment personally as I have but been to see this doctor, but just hope you can find some helpful info there.

Hoping for the best for you and baby!

Thanks Viiv, this is very informative and helpful. At least we have another option to think of.

Hi Alicia,

I had my 1st child @ 35+. Being a mum above 35 definitely worries me. But, my gynae did not do any amnio test for me. Instead, he referred me for genetic scan by Prof Anandas. I had 2 scans @ 14 wks & 22/23 wks. Prof Anandas provided us with very detailed explanations of the test results & he was very reassuring. I did not proceed with any amnio tests & gave birth to a healthy girl. I had my #2 18 mths later & again skipped amnio, only did the 2 genetic scans. My #2 was also born healthy.

Prof Anandas is worth considering as a second opinion b4 u decide on the nx course of action.

Hi Snowball32,

How much did the 2 scans by Prof Anandas cost? Before you went to him, did you also do the Oscar test with your gynae? TIA!

Hi min81,

Nope, I did not do any Oscars tests. My gynae arranged for the scans 1st b4 he decide the nx course if action. The billings were done via my gynae for my tests. I did ladt test in 2007..think I paid ard $360 per test. U can call the clinic to find out their charges.

You might want to get your gynae to explain what a bad result actually means? We had poor OSCAR results for our second baby, and were completely panicked. When we discussed it with our doc, he was fantastic at putting the numbers in perspective, explaining what the averages meant.

We did CVS to follow up, and baby was fine.

Hi Snowball, you have a good gynea, most gynea would send mothers for the oscar then either cvs or amnio. I'm pretty reluctant to do the cvs as the risk of miscarriage is high, cost is high too. I'm gonna discuss with the specialist to see if it's that urgent to do cvs.

Caramel how poor was your result? And how did you feel after the test? My gynea say my baby's possibility is 10% ds. Versus most of my friends where like 1%. Isn't that scary?

Snowball32,

Thanks for the info.. Will find out more about it when the time comes.. I heard that Oscar is not that accurate and not cheap too.. If that's the case, i would rather save the money and go straight for Prof Ananda's scan but hubby is worried abt cost.. But he has a congenital heart anomaly so i think it would be good to have a gd look at the bb's heart early on..

Alicia,

Whichever tests you go for, hope you get a good result.. All the best!

Thanks min81. Best wishes to you too.
I just went to NUH and told the professor about the genetic scan. I dont like his attitude of discriminating the mothers in forums are uneducated and rubbish talk we are having. He obviously think the scan is redundant. As it's not as accurate as cvs or amnio.

To have a peace of mind, I'm going for amnio in next 2 weeks.

Alicia,

Thank you

Can i ask which was the prof who commented that? Cos i'm with NUH too.. If not convenient, maybe can pm me? Thanks!

Hi Alicia, I just want to cheer u on n share my story. I conceived my twins via ivf last year n their Oscar results were 1:5! I cried buckets. I oso went to prof Amanda at Camden. He put my risk as 1:222. I went through a lot of struggles before deciding on anmio... The risk of miscarriage for twin through anmio is higher. Thk to the skillful prof at kkh n w God's grace, both bbs are fine! So, pls try not to worry so much n I wish you all the best!!

Hi Alicia,

Sorry, I don't remember the risk ratio as it was 2 years ago
sad.gif
I was completely freaked out when the results were explained to me - they kept pushing the idea that it was high risk. In hindsight, I think the specialist just had terrible bedside manners. Fortunately, we went straight up to our gynae to get his take, and he was very positive about the results, and explained that the risk was not that high for us. I did CVS as well, and it was ok too. My little one is 2.5yrs old now, and completely fine

I've just received my amnio result this morning, gynea confirmed me that my baby has DS. Thou devastated, we don't know whether to take another amnio test at other hospital. Is it necessary?

Alicia - so sorry to hear that. An Amnio test will actually show you the genetic makeup of the child. Your doctor will be able to explain the chromosomes that show the DS (they can show you the actual test results and how DS was determined. If it will make you feel better to get a second opinion then go ahead and take another test at the hospital, but the chances are very slim that the results will be different (but who knows....). Good luck.

Hi SuperMommy and Ariel Yu. Thanks for your advice. I am now in my 16 wk and has just scheduled another amnio test at TMC. My first amnio was at NUH. We want to reassure the condition before we make the decision to terminate my pregnancy. After lots of readings and rational thinkings, we don't have the confident to look after a DS child. Besides IQ being low, 50% DS babies suffers physical defects. Really respect those parents that bring their child to full term. It would be a mental, physical and financial commitment for the family. What happens when he grows into adulthood? I can't imagine my eldest daughter sacrifacing her life to look after her sibling when we are not with them in future. Moreover, after chatting with my 2nd gynea, he thinks SG doesn't have good enough associations for DS people compare to America and Australia.

Am mentally tortured, both of us find it hard to focus in office, especially when we recieved another bad news that one of our company's department shuts down, letting go 60 employees and there will be another round retrenchment within this month. Devastated!

My son's Oscar test result shows high risk for DS but we chose to forgo amnio as we'll give birth to him nevertheless. At 5th month scan, gynae said he's normal. At birth, he's normal, and now he's a smart and active 18 month old.

So Oscar scan isn't that accurate and there could be false positives too. For my current pregnancy, we decided not to do Oscar at all.

Don't terminate the preg too early. Wait until 5th month detail scan or if u can take the risk of the 1% chance of miscarriage, choose a good gynae/clinic to do the amnio. Your baby might be alright after all!

hi, i new here. i need some advise. i'm 35 this yr and 1st preg at 9wks. My gynea giving me option to do CVS. Does anyone go for CVS without going for genetic scan? i know the risk for CVS. So should i go for genetic scan first and see the results first or go straight for CVS due to age factor? thanks.

Hi Lycra,

do you mind if i ask ur age grp and test results?

my test result for Trisomy 21 shows that ppl at my age grp (am 28 yrs old) should have ratio 1:800~ but my adjusted risk was 1:551 which my gynae mention that was consider within normal range but still high risk for down syndrome as my result was lower than expected. was very worried but nt comfortable of amnio (considering there is risk involved).

does that means that on the 5th mth scan, if (touch wood) the baby have DS, it will be able to pick up?

Hi. For DS, some of the symptoms include no nose bridge and broad short neck. At 5 mth scan they can pick out these features as the baby is much bigger.

Hi Vanillalatter85, my probability for trisomy 21 was 1:264 when I did the test in August last year when I was bout 4months. My gynae told me above 1:250 is consider low risk. However, im borderline and cos I was 29 when I conceived, the results is consider lousy as i should be getting ratios of 1:800 like what you mentioned. He gave me 2 options; 1) go for amnio and get a 99% accurate result, the result will take 3 weeks but there is a risk of miscarriage. 2) Wait till baby is 5months and go n see Dr Ananda for a thorough scan for baby features to determine. My husband and I weighed our options and we felt since the amnio results also have to wait, we might jus wait till 5mths to do e scan and not take the miscarriage risk.

I must admit that 4 weeks of waiting for the baby to turn 5mths was pure torture. I cried alot and prayed alot and spoke to my baby alot. Finally the scan date came and Dr Ananda was very nice n thorough bout it, pointing out e features and organs of the baby to us. Aft e scan he said the probability of us having a DS child was 1:6000. I have never felt happier in my life.

Hence, to all mummies who r debating to take the amnio or not, pls consider going for a scan with Dr Ananda. You not only get accurate results and also get to see a very clear image of your baby, you do not run the risk of having a miscarriage.

hi has anyone done the NT scan? I just did mine yesterday and my bb's neck thickness was 11mm.. very devastating news.. i have to do another CVS scan again next Mon and to wait 10 days for the result.. now i m coming 13 weeks..

Hi, I gotten high risk result for trisomy 21. The risk for my age is 1:153 and I got 1:7. Gynae recommended harmony blood test which is non invasion but cost $1800. Was told that accuracy rate is 99%. Just went today, result will take 2 weeks.

I heard there are many false positive for oscar test. Hence, we must be positive and think on the bright side while waiting for result. Don't let our mood affect the little one. Keep praying.

Hi, I am new to this. just to share my personal experiences. This was my 3rd pregnancy . I had to terminate my 2nd pregnancy because of development problems with the BB in the 3rd month. Image the stress and fear I had to endure again when I received that my 3rd pregnancy 's OSCAR results was bad as well. Risk was 1: 4 maybe due to my age ( I was 39 years old ) and after blood test was ajusted to 1:6. I was advised to take AMINO test rather than CVS which is a more painful and higher risk option . I remember I had to wait until I was 16 weeks which was a 3-4 weeks' wait before the AMINO test. I opted for the express service which I need to pay double the normal rate to know the results within 2 working days. The test went well without much pain though I had to take a course of antibiolotics. Since then, I had been praying and I have been blessed with a healthy , active girl who is turning one soon. We need to stay positive and learn to let go if need be.

Thanks sfmq.
I just did my detailed scan at 5 mths 2 days ago. Im not too sure if it was the same kind of scan which you did with Dr Ananda. Sounds similar to what you describe. It was a scan through the tummy, pretty much similar to what the gynae usually did at normal scan but a more detailed one like organs etc. The radiographer and gynae says everything looks normal. Luckily i didnt opt for amnio test. really cant take the risk of miscarriage.

Hi princess10, the thickness was 3.2mm.

Hi All, I m a first time & high risk mum. I did an Oscar test (week 12) and the result came back as high risk. (1:140). My gynae suggest that I go for Amino test or the harmony blood test. Can I ask for some advice ? Thanks.

Hi kfgoh,
I would recommend harmony blood test as it is non invasive. As oscar test is just an indication of risk level, I think you won't want to put your bb at risk by going thru amino. For me, thank god that my harmony blood test come back with low risk result and I just went for 20 weeks detailed scan also no sign of DS, development is good.

Be positive and keep praying. I believe God will bless your bb.
