Anyone can help? Baby IUGR

I am at 34 weeks, baby having IUGR, measuring about 2 weeks behind, gaining only 100 gms in 2 weeks and low amniotic fluid, only bare minimum of 5 cm.

Wish to ask if any mummies experienced this or know of anything can kindly share with me:

- in general, would it be better to take baby out now to grow bigger outside the womb than remain restricted inside?

- can baby tolerate such long periods of growth restriction? Its already been 2 weeks baby didnt gain much weight. Can baby tolerate further if dont deliver soon?

- can a 34 weeks plus premmie weighing about 1.6 to 1.8 kg baby thrive?

I know these are qns to ask the doc whom i am not seeing till this afternoon hence like to do some research and think thru first.

Hi Sunny,

It's me again.

1. In general, it is much better to let the baby grow inside your womb, unless there are very strong reasons why baby should be taken out, for example, decreasing amniotic fluid level, open channel for infection etc. In my case, amniotic fluid was leaking and decreasing, so no way baby can remain inside me for long. Also, leaking fluid means baby is exposed to outside world, and this means very high chance of infection, and so better to take out asap.

2. Problem is if deliver too early, baby's lungs might not be fully developed, unless your gynae has started to give you injections to strengthen your baby's lungs. In any case, you cannot predict your baby's future growth rate. When I was carrying my #2, at 30 weeks, she was at the 1 percentile for growth, and the gynae at TMC was super worried. When I delivered at 37 weeks, she was at 45%...

3. If you ask my gynae, 34 week+ premmie is already considered very very good. My gynae specialises in complicated pregnancies, and he told me the general cut-off is 32 weeks. Anything below - very complicated. Beyond 32 weeks, things should be fine, just that baby might need to be warded for some time for observation.

Just relax. You have passed the 'complicated' phase. Your baby should be fine. What you need to know and decide now is - when should baby come out? And how - C-sect or natural through induction? And when baby is out, how is baby going to feed?

Thanks jhw, thats what i worry too that either baby cannot tolerate further restrictions and start releasing meconium or worst stillborn! Now every moment i watch for baby movements. Thats the only thing i can do. Still waiting to speak to doc later.

Thanks Moon, your baby is of good weight, if mine is now above 2 kg, i sure ask to deliver. But mine so small thats why i was hoping to keep him in as long as possible but that comes with risks of him not tolerating restriction further. Sigh, really hope doc can advise the best course of action soon. I got steroids already, supposedly baby should be ok with breathing. I will have to go thru csect due to low placenta.

Sunny
u r welcome..
I am sorry tt i can't help much..
update us after u discuss with gynae
Hope everything is well for u..

My friend just gave birth to a 35 week old premature baby who weighs only 1.8kg one week ago. Her case was quite similar to yours - IUGR plus low aminotic fluid. Her gynae was concerned and recommended inducing the baby. Other than the low birth weight, the baby has no health problems detected at all - could breathe on her own, could drink formula milk. Hence, apart from the bb being placed in a warm box in the normal nursery, my friend is just waiting for the baby to gain more weight in the hospital before she brings her home.

Found this post while browsing.. My son was delivered 35+4 at 1.9 and yes thrive after birth. He is now a healthy active bubbly 4yo!

Hi mummies,

My baby is diagnosed with severe IUGR recently too and my Gynae recommended to induce baby at 38weeks. I read online that IUGR babies may have growth/development problems, low IQ etc. are these true??

Hi Sunflower09, may I ask when did your son catch up to his peers in terms of weight/growth development? My baby is diagnosed with severe IUGR and doctor will induce baby this weekend...
