This is my horrible experience with Thomson Medical Centre. As of now, I'm still waiting for a decent reply from them.
I delivered my baby on 23rd April 2011, past 11pm and by the time I was wheeled up to the ward to rest, it was already midnight. While I did not get the free upgrade from a 4-bedded ward to a 2-bedded ward, my husband decided to pay for the upgrade so that I could recuperate better.
I was sent to Ward 628 where there was no other patient.. After transferring me to the Bed B, the nurses left without saying anything. My husband then went to make use of the restroom inside the ward. Soon after he went in, Nurse Noorhaisah came into my room. Upon seeing the restroom door closed, she raised her voice at me and said, “Tell your husband he’s not allowed to use the toilet here! It’s for patients only!!” and walked off before I could say anything. I thought this was totally uncalled for because firstly, there was no other patient occupying the ward and my husband and I were the only ones in the room at that time. Secondly, neither Nurse Noor nor any other staff had told us in advance about this rule. I later got to know that this rule was implemented because there had been an incident whereby the husband of another patient walked in on another patient. I could reason with that and would definitely agree with it. However, what I could not tolerate was that Nurse Noor chose to shout at me when she failed to conduct the appropriate orientation prior to leaving the room earlier.
Staying in a 2-bedded ward meant that my husband could not stay over with me and thus, when he left at around 12.45am, he changed the temperature of the air-con to 27degrees out of fear that I would feel cold in the night. However, I woke up at around 1.30am, feeling very warm. I then pressed the call bell to request for assistance. When I heard the door being opened, I apologized for the inconvenience and before I could put forth my request to have the temperature changed, Nurse Noor, said, “Why ah?” very loudly to me. When I explained that I felt warm, and required her to adjust the temperature for me, she simply said, “Ok” and walked off. Throughout this brief interaction, I must highlight that the entire conversation took place with Nurse Noor standing at the door while I was on the bed next to the window.
My hormones were probably haywire after my near 14 hours labour process and I began to feel very cold at around 3am. I had no choice but to press the call bell and Nurse Noor appeared at the door again. I apologized that I was feeling cold this time and requested her to make the room warmer for me. Again, without saying a thing, she walked off after presumably changing the temperature for me. After around half an hour, I was still feeling very cold and while I felt bad at pressing the call bell repeatedly, I had no choice but to do so. This time, another nurse appeared. She came closer but not to my bedside. I told her that I was feeling very cold and requested for an extra blanket. She said, “Ok” and walked away. She returned soon but it was not a blanket that she brought with her. Instead, it was 2 bed sheets folded together and she simply threw it on my body and walked off! I later got to know that this nurse was from the nursery and that she happened to walk by my room when I pressed the call bell and so, responded to me.
I do not understand what happened either but even with the extra bed sheets on me, I still felt uncomfortably cold and so, had to get the nurses to change the temperature for me again. I was too uncomfortable by then to bother about who responded to my call.
At 5.30am, I began to tremble badly from the cold. Out of desperation, I pressed the call bell again and Nurse Noor appeared once again at the doorstep. I explained that I was still feeling terribly cold and was trembling. She remarked that the temperature was already set to 30degrees and if that was the case, she would just switch off the air-con for me. I agreed and she just left my door open after presumably switching off the air-con. It was a most horrible night I ever had. I continued to shiver non-stop till almost 7am and was just yearning for my husband to come so that he could assist me. I was on the verge of tears because I felt so vulnerable and at the mercy of the nurses since I was confined to bed.
On the day of my discharge, I was asked to fill in a feedback form. Unknown to me, Nurse Manager, Sister Loke Lai Leng read my feedback on the spot and proceeded to attend to me. She did not bring up the matter and since it did occur to me that she would have read the feedback form, I did not say much to her when she asked me about my stay in the hospital. Understandably, I was too tired and anxious to get home.
I received a phone call from Sister Loke after I was discharged. She apologized for the bad experience I had and requested me to share more details with her so that she could further investigate the matter. I shared about the details with her and she noted them down.
During our last phone conversation on 4th May 2011, Sister Loke shared her findings with me. She expressed that while Nurse Noor initially denied having raised her voice at me, she later agreed that she could have handled the situation in a better manner. However, that and an apology from Sister Loke was all that she could offer to me. I was not satisfied with the resolution and explained to Sister Loke that I felt strongly about it since I paid for the upgrade to a 2-bedded. Had I been given the free upgrade, I could have at least consoled myself that the service could have been compromised.
Sister Loke expressed empathy and explained that any other resolution was beyond her scope and told me that she would inform her superior, Sister See, the Assistant Director of the Nursing team, to get in touch with me. However, I did not hear from Sister See after more than a week and so, I contacted Sister Loke on 13th May, 2.20pm. Sister Loke expressed ignorance at the lack of a call from Sister See and told me that she would find out for me. Sister Loke called me back at 8.30pm on the same day and simply told me that Sister See said that she can’t oblige to my request and so, she did not call me back. This is simply ridiculous to me! Firstly, I had not put up any formal request and so, I do not know what is it that she cannot oblige to. Secondly and most importantly, as a superior, shouldn’t she have the basic courtesy or professionalism to at least give a call to the unhappy patient? Sister Loke was unable to answer my queries and since I understand the limitations of her position, I informed her that I would pursue the matter myself.
In all, my whole experience with the nurses at Level 6 is nothing short of a nightmare and since even the Assistant Director of the Nursing team cannot be bothered to return a phone call.
