Would like to prepare my son for Primary 1 next year as his english is not very good. He is still not able to read a book by himself. Anyone can recommend good english enrichment classes (weekend)?

Thanks in advance.

You can try British council, Morris Allen and Lorna Whiston.
My girls are in British council since K1 till P1 now, i think it helps.

my hubby's friend daughter attended Morris Allen
heard from him that they didn't see much result and have since stopped
quite ex. around $50 per lesson

my boy attended MA for 2 yrs, but have since stopped (like what hippo2002 mentioned, cos I don't see improvement. And have since change him to ICR, but also didnt see much improvement lei.. Sigh... Bristish council! Heard is quite good but ex right? And also they have only Speech & Drama only is it?

did anyone try Lorna Whiston speech & drama?
they have a center at Marine Parade. now full & there is a wait list

personally, I don't feel the kids learned English from speech & drama. It's more to 'open up' the child. My elder girl is quite self-conscious & reserved. So I sent her to speech & drama as well as Chinese dance.

But to really learn English, probably should consider more academic type like Kumon?

my younger brother used to attend British council English lessons. They teached grammar but not so much on comprehension or exam focus. Just general knowledge. Not sure whether it's still the same now?

Twin girls, is that your observation too?

I notice British council has adjusted their curriculum lately, now more into local school syllabus. my girls are attending the creative writing, and not much on the communication skills, but very well on reading and writing...

Hi mummies,

Can recommend any good enrichment programme for phonics beside ICR and zoophonic? Any good kumon school?

Thanks!

hippo2002,

Thanks for the thread!

Was hesitating kumon or English enrichment class at lorna whiston for my son.
Any comments on the school?

hehe, if you read the Kumon thread, you would know I'm a strong supporter of Kumon system )

But word of caution, not every child suit the programme. My younger child is too restless for Kumon so I'm looking at other alternatives for her

Yet to try Lorna Whiston. for 3 years old, it's parent accompanied. So I am not considering Lorna Whiston this year. Anyway, there is a wait list right now

British council sounds good.
Twin girls, are the teachers native speaking?

hippo2002,

yah...you're strong supporter for kumon.
Maybe I'll enrol math for my ds at kumon, thanks!

What do they teach in Kumon ar? Heard they have a lot of worksheet to do.. didn't want to stress my boy too much.. he is rather lazy type.. sigh..

My friend recommended Bristish Council too... might consider lor.. but my boy enjoying himself in ICR.. haiz.. stress..

Wanted to prepare my boy for him P1 next year, therefore wanted to 'brush up' his English.. heard in P1, they will have learn hanyu pinyin.. any recommendation for chinese enrichment classes?

yeah, a lot of worksheets. 5 pages per subject everyday.
that's why I didn't start my girl on Kumon Chinese until now. Didn't want to overload her

here's Kumon English syllabus
http://www.kumon.com.sg/english.html

She was attending Hanyu Pinyin classes at commmunity center & RC for 1 year. no homework. She can read Chinese books as long as there's hanyin pinyin. I can see result too

hippo2002,
My gal is in Pri One. Im tinking of sending her for some enrichment classes during the wkends too. I juz called Kumon. They charging $110 per subject for twice a wk loh. Im still considering.

Its simple and free:

Read to your children! My view is that weekends are precious quality time with our kids and they shouldn't be holed up in an enrichment centre..

Hi Mummies

For phonics and reading, i know of this teacher who is quite good. My 2 kids are able to read in the 3 months that he taught them. He is teaching in most cc and the course fee is reasonable at $68 (member) for 3 month course. His name is Chung. Currently, my p1 son is still attending at tanjong pagar cc. He teaches not only phonics and also grammar.

For creative writing and comprehension, i was looking hard for it for my p3 girl. In the end, i found it in RC near my place (bukit merah). Perhaps you can look at the RC around you. Mine was thru recommendation and she was good.

sc
my girl also attended Mr Chung's classes last year at Admiralty Garden CC. Yeah, he is good but he doesn't teach at East side

hi hippo2002

Is it? I am not too sure. The last round i was searching for his schedule din really notice and i want it to be near my place. Dun want to spend too much time on travelling.

He is good and was lucky that i dun have to spend months thru other schools before i found him.

Hi hippo, try not to let your girl rely on hanyupinyin to read chinese book, she can't recognise and read chinese characters if she rely too much on hanyupinyin.

hi mums.... understand everyone's concern. you can try sending to a teacher who teaches 1to 1 enrichment from home. Got gd reviews and experience from her so am reccommending to everyone in the forum. er... just that not sure if she still recruits more students.
email me at [email protected]
if you would like to have the contact.

try a new center called Eclectic workshop for children at bukit timah shopping centre good phonic program and very fun my kids love it!
their number is 81427280

Most programmes will work for some children and not so effective for others. What's important is to get an assessment of your child's competency and what are some areas of improvement you like to see in your child. What's crucial is to constantly provide a supportive environment and to listen to your child's feedback. Be open to their feedback espcially their experiences in their classes. If need be, speak with the teacher to understand how your child is progressing and share with him/her your observations and desired outcomes for your child.

I Can Read system is an effective programme for development of Total English Language learning for children from 2.5 years old. We conduct FREE diagnostic assessments by our Reading Specialists and an appropriate programme will be recommended. For more information on the I Can Read system, you may contact Pandan Valley Centre (Holland) at 6468 6846 or Kovan Centre (Hougang)at 6343 0320 for more information.

hi...i signed up a trial lesson at Eclectic workshop but i can't to seem to get them at the above number...have they closed? i have paid quite a sum

Speech and drama classes are not meant to improve a child's reading ability but more to encourage them to "open up", express more. Phonics classes may help to a certain extent but the effect will be too slow and ineffective, esp for a K1 or K2 child to prepare him to read in time for P1.

I am speaking from experience as my older child could read approx 800 words when he was 2 and now at age 5, is reading books meant for age 9 to 12. My younger is now 3 and is also reading simple books on his own.

I taught them to read with a trans-disciplinary thematic approach:
1. a combination of daily reading of good books (not readers)
2. reinforced with flash cards that are introduced together other thematic activities that I've prepared.

Through the above-mentioned approach and lapbooking which I do with my kids, they pick up an incredible number of new words every week. Because new words are introduced through the trans-disciplinary thematic approach, combined with lapbooking, the child recognises the words, learns the relevance in a fun and hands-on manner. Definitely more effective.

Sounds like a lot of work, but it is not. Anyway, I have shared a lot of our homeschooling approaches/ideas at my blog www.*******************************.blogspot.com

I paid $86 for 2 x 2 trial lessons at eclectic company...it is not the money...but just angry that they closed like that and denied having nothing to do with the company when i called their number.

There is a good one in Parkway Builder Centre for P1 onwards.

#11 English Invents (by Mrs Tan)hersel and no other helpers, lessons are conducted in groups.

My son is currently attending.

Just received a flyer for Brainfit Classroom. Did a little research on its fast forword software (US-based) and programs and it seems pretty impressive.

I think they use some neuro-science researched methods in their training. They seemed to be linked to BrainFit Studios in Novena which has a track record of 10 years here...

Well, at least it's different from the usual caucasian teaching english with books... (;

Anybody's got any comments/thoughts on this??

Also, deciding which English enrichment program to send my daughter to...

Hi, any advice on Kumons school for K2, as my son does not know how to read and write English..
I am worried, next year he is going Primary 1.

Any advice if kumon schools can help or any?

Hi any comments on this BrainFit Classroom? With the latest write up in ST on parents sending kids to psycho-therapist, its sounds so serious! I read some info on this fast forward program too. seems to help in the foundational skills of children. any thoughts?

Yes it sound interesting. But is it effective? My child was in brainfit studio went through the fast forward programme and the result showed improvement. I saw improvement for the period when he was with the programme. After that he is back to his old self again.

Honestly, Brainfit programmes are a waste of money. Heard from a neighbour who sent the kids there that it is very expensive and the programmes are nothing special but packaged very commercially to entice parents. No improvement from her DD who spent a few thousands there. Don't bother trying. Anyway fast forward programme is not exclusive to brain fit. Just my 2 cents worth.

Try lcentral.net
LCentral is already 4 years old with 13 centres in Singapore, 6 overseas. They use native english speakers and follow MOE allign curriculum.

Children goes through a free child assesment and enrol in programme cater for their needs. They go by literacy ability rather than by age.

Hi

I am looking for a small group tuition (English & Maths) for my K2 boy. Can someone recommend a tutor who conducts lessons at the tutor's residence in small group basis in the north, please?

Hi Jollysnow
Are you referring to this enrichment centre called "Giving Tre3"? I stay near Thomson Plaza, and happened to see the centre recently. Quite a cosy and homely learning place.

They have quite an interesting reading programme from Australia. My 3-yr-old kid went for their trial and enjoyed the lesson, cos he got to learn to read the words through online games and activities. I've brought him around many places but he didn't quite like the "worksheets-and-reading" approach in those schools. So, in the end, I've signed him up for the reading class at "Giving Tre3" in Jan 2013.

You may want to check out the centre on their FB:
