1. Was at SAFRA Mount Faber with my darling a few weeks ago and we saw several toddlers finishing their swimming lessons.

2. I asked one of the adult taking care of the toddlers if we can sign up our girl for the swimming class and was pleasantly surprised to find out that there is a childcare call NurtureStars located right within Mount Faber SAFRA.

3. We went inside NurtureStar office and interacted with the staff and also observed the teachers - children interactions.

4. We did further reviews from Kiasuparents, SMH and Idobb and found some 2010 feedbacks.

5. This is an extract from NurtureStars Child Care Centre @ Mount Faber SAFRA:
<font color="119911">
"a joint collaboration between SAFRA and Kinderland Educare Services Pte Ltd, had commenced operations on 4th January 2010 at SAFRA Mount Faber."

"NurtureStars Child Care Centre Offers:

• Children’s Music Programme for cultivation of self-expression, creativity and musical sensitivity through listening, playing and singing.
• KinderFit Programme which promotes acquisition of fundamental movement skills as well as development of self-confidence, responsible habit, team spirit and a positive attitude towards a healthy life-style.
• Comprehensive and Secure Club Facilities &amp; Amenities such as convenient drop-off point, fun playground, children’s swimming pool, secure environment, etc.
• Comprehensive Selection of Enrichment Programmes for Children"

"Pre-Nursery - 18 months to 3 years plus
• Nursery - 4 years
• Kindergarten - 5 years to 6 years"

"Operating Hours :
Monday to Friday - 7am to 7pm
Saturday - 7am to 2pm"

</font>
6. Was told that the fees for N1 after MCYS subsidy is about $500+ It was mentioned in another forum that there are additional costs involved for enrichment programme - is the enrichment programme compulsory or can one opt-in/opt-out?

7. Was also told that their current waiting list is 30+ (which seems to be the save as Eager Beaver @ Bukit Merah, too similar to be believable)

8. While the location and facilities in SAFRA are great, one can't help worry that this may not be mid or even long term, esp. since Eager Beaver @ Bukit Merah used to be in SAFRA @ Mount Faber until end 2008. Does anybody knows why Eager Beaver moved out of SAFRA premises? One short-term consolation is that the other Nurturestars in location SAFRA@Yishun Cty Club.

9. Would appreciate if parents who have sent their children to this 1+ yr old NurtureStars @Mount Faber SAFRA to give such updated feedback, focusing on the strengths and weaknesses of this Childcare.

Thank-you in advance.

Personal comments: We note that SAFRA is not a shareholder of Nurturestars, and the $2 paid up capital is a bit of disappointing - yes, we do know that many other Pte Ltd in SG are also $2, but for your case, an amount more than $2 is surely not too much to ask for, esp. since you are going to register for GST, ie. your revenue is above S$1mil already/soon? Personally, I think a PUC of $50,000 or more would be more reasonable/comforting for parents.

PS: We are neither related to Nurturestars/SAFRA/Kinderland nor their Competitors, but are simply concerned parents conducting our intensive due diligence on a reliable childcare for our angel. We would certainly appreciate more feedback (both positive and negative on Nurturestars based on parents with vested interest).

Nurturestars record &amp; details in MCYS website.

Noticed that Nurturestars has recently (3rd March 2011) obtained a 2 years operating license from MCYS, would have been better if it is more years though, eg. 3~5 yrs.

TG: NutureStar @ SAFRA is a partnership with SAFRA to provide the services.

If you are concern with whether the childcare would be there for the long term, why don't you write to SAFRA or NutureStar to ask ?

Hi,

found the environment at nurturestar v.good but the teachers seems rather inexperience...

a neighbour who was with eager beaver previously continue with nurturestar when they take over.. but after 1 month plus... they decide to remove their child from nurturestar after observing that their child is not too happy there...

eager beave was actually made to leave the premise with short notice period as safra wanted to give the space to run the cc to nurturestar....

probably as the centre is set up in a short span of time with new teachers n principal hence even by adopting the established curricu from kinderland- they still require moretime to settle down...

Im very keen to enrol my child there, but after checking out the place about 4 times... I find myself unconfident to put my child there...

Hi TS,

Thanks for your insightful comments.

Q1. For your neighbour who pulled out from nurturestars, was it in early 2010? mid 2010 or dec 2010?

Q2. Would appreciate if you could elaborate on your 4 visits...

Looks like I should also visit them a few times and asking the more questions before deciding to go with them.

I went down to check out NS at SAFRA Yishun twice and was not happy and do not feel comfortable.

1. The lady staff was so stuck up (not just the look, she took ages to open the door for us too although she was just there and simply ignored us!)

2. There was a strong stench/smell once we stepped in (smell like dust, very strong).

3. The children and toddlers there do not look happy and lively.

4. The teachers there looked 'dead' and uncaring.

5. There was no anti-slip mat on the bathroom/toiet floor. No doubt their floor tiles may be 'anti-slip' but once its wet, it can be slippery too and you do not expect all children to guai guai walk very cautiously and slowly.

6. A room for the keyboards, good.

7. Curriculum, I like.

Besides the last 2 points, the rest are really a big thumbs down.

JMHO.

How about Eager Beaver at Yishun Central? Good? The teachers do not look 'lively' too and saw a child was left to cry, teacher did not bother to coax or pacify the child. Norm?

Hi TG,

My neighbour pull out their child i think should be around the period of Feb-April 2010.

My 4 visits there was attended by the supervisor, who eagerly go thru the school curriculum and programs... but each timw i notice the children who is there seems quiet and unhappy... n equally uninterested teachers... may be because it is a new setup with lotsa new student hence they have lotsa of adaptation to do.. nevertheless I can feel that the teachers there seem "uninterested" . so im uncomfortable ... even tough the supervisor is eager and very vocal.... but the main caregiver... the teachers... quality isn't there...

it have been operating for 1 yr plus-2011 may have some positive changes, this im not sure... u have to check out to find out.

Hi Ning,

when did you visit the place?i went down last week to take a look and there doesn't seem to be any smell.the place actually looks nice...i visited during the late afternoon so i see all the kids having fun playing with the toys.

i am keen on Yishun but are there any other feedbacks abt the Yishun branch?

Hi TS,

I've been there 3 times so far and have asked 5 parents whether they are happy with the childcare. One of them has been with them for a year and is happy with them... another is only a few months, but also seems fine with them.

During my last visit there, I saw a trainee teacher from "KLC School of Education" and when I was out of her sight, I hear her calling the children "hello"... "hello"... when I was within her sight, she started to use polite words like "Please" - am not impressed with this trainee teacher.

Was told that trainee teachers from KLC are usually there for a few weeks.

Will monitor this further...

Curious, which childcare is your child with now?

My observation of the children there is that many are lively with a few of them either quiet or not interested to participate... need more random observations.

hi mummies.

I been to nurturestar at Yishun Safra for recee. Dun like the place especially the teachers.

My hubby was inside toilet near the centre and can heard the teacher shouting loudly at the kids and then that teacher was rough to pull the shirt of one of the kids.

>the teacher shouting loudly at the kids and then
>that teacher was rough to pull the shirt of one of
>the kids.

Unacceptable!!

hi TG,

wat i observe is like the 1st 3-4 months of operation, hence things don't look good mayb only a beginning teething period, probably thing have improve since.

i have since move away from mt faber estate n now staying near my parents...now both my kids is with 3 hr kindergarten ...

if ur interested in putting in ur child in a kindergarten, there is a good one nearby call Capstone Kindergarten.

hi.. any1 know nuturestar at tamp safra? me gg to chk it out later... they say all teachers r from kinderland... but feel funny as in u pay like kinderland fees but nuture star brand.. haha

Hi bbspree,

Just to add on to what you said "u pay like kinderland fees but nuture star brand" and Safra facilities.

May want to also talk to several parents on-site during their pickups in the evening to assess their satisfaction level.

Best wishes.

Hi Treestar,

I would like to know more about Capstone. Why do you say it's good? My son is now with My First Skool. Keep on falling sick. Plus they don't teach, they just let the children play. My son is happy there but I think he can be placed somewhere where more can be taught to him.

hi I'm yishun mum- and an preschool enrichment teacher. If interest to have 1.5 hrs of fun lesson time for your young kids,
just pm me or email me at [email protected] to discuss on yr child's development needs. Mostly I have 2 kids in a group so it's interactive and kids enjoy it too! I can advise on your child's learning needs and assess yr child's level. I am conducting morning class for expatriates' child in Eng/ chinese languages and have full set of learning material/ curriculum.

DS in Eager beaver @ Yishun central, day 1 was 11thApril =) he's there less than a month, so far he's happy, the teachers responds and able to tell me what he does, n of cos my son relates what he does in school to me. i ask things like teacher kiss u? teacher scold u? teacher play boxing? teacher singsongs? to get him to talk, my mindset was to trigger him to tell me stuffs teachers didnt tell me. BUT so far nothing! &amp; he's adapting well! FYI , i was a SAHM for abt 5yrs. 2mth mth till date i was the main caretaker for him. so i know him well enf, hehehee.

those enrolling in EB @ YS do let me know where yr kid class is! can say HI to u whn i drop my boy off! =)

Feedback rgd Nurture Star Mt Faber. My child has been in the sch for more than a yr. Generally, the teachers there are ok although seemed to be the going by the routine type. The turnover rate for the teachers seemed to high (not very sure abt this but there seemed to be a no of new teachers)

Response time by the sch is slow ie if u have a query, you would have to wait awhile. But they have improved slightly since the start. It is sometime difficult to get through their telephone line which can be frustrating when u have an impt message to pass through..

The recep lady can be quite forgetful at times when I want to pass on messages etc to the relevant teachers..

In terms of learning, I do not think they teach a lot. Don't see my child learning much.

Not sure to switch school or not..

hi pigsfly,

i hav enrolled my boy there for a year n withdraw him when i shifted location; now my son is in another kindergarten.... find he learn alot during the 1 year in capstone n the environment is very conducive, the teachers all have the heart for children, after putting him in the new kindergarten find that he is learning less ... then thinking of how much my boy have learnt in the previous kindergarten,i start appreciate capstone even more. at 3 yr old already he was taught days of the week, alphabets, colours, animals, writing chinese words and even the proper procedure of washing hands! to add-on, the principal in capstone is v.responsible n interact with parents to feedback on ur child performance regularly.

Hi,

I am looking for a CC around Bt Merah area and chanced upon this thread. Would like to find out about feedback for the following CC and how do they compare with each other.

1) Cheriehearts @Depot
2) EagerBeaver @BM
3) Nurturestars @MF
4) Learning Vision @Surbana one

Thanks!

TS,

>now my son is in another kindergarten...
>i start appreciate capstone even more.
>at 3 yr old already he was taught days
>of the week

A little bit confusing... is your son currently 3 yrs old? or is he in Kindergarten (4-5 yrs old)?

Irene,

>1) Cheriehearts @Depot
>2) EagerBeaver @BM
>3) Nurturestars @MF
>4) Learning Vision @Surbana one

My child is now with Nurturestars@MF and is happy there. My assessment of the teachers there is a mixed, some are caring and friend while others are borderline. It really depends on which teachers is taking care of your child. I am still assessing NS@MF at this moment and between 1 to 10, am currently rating them 6.5 (overall).

I got a feeling that your other 3 choices would have been actively discussed in other threads here and other forums (not sure about Surbana One though), as such it's worth spending several hours (at least 6 hours) compiling various opinions, and possibly ask questions direct to the specific CC in that specialised CC thread so that you get first hand feedback / comments.

Once you have done sufficient online research, you can narrow down to the top 2 CCs which you are most comfortable with and do site visits and do check out which teacher will be taking care of your child. In your site visit, you or your family members can choose to go either around 8am or better 5.30pm to 6.30pm to station outside the CC and ask those parents/grandparents picking up their child their opinion on the CC - ie. their likes AND dislikes.

Also, do check with the CC how long is the waiting list / queue. There is no harm registering yourself in the queue after all it's a non-obliging queue and there is no down payment of any kind.

Best wishes.

Hi TG,

Thank you so much for your prompt and insightful reply. May I know why you chose Nurturestars among all? BTW, do you have any comments about Modern Montessori at Bukit Merah? I have been there and it looks pretty ok but I noticed that the school does not have as many students as the other CC and does not have waiting list at all!

Irene,

The swimming pool is a strong plus. I've a look at their curriculum as well as food menu (different food every day for 1 month). We are still evaluating NS and if something is amiss, we will still pull out. Therefore, we are not concluding that they are the one of the best CC (balancing fees &amp; curriculum &amp; teachers) in the neighbourhood yet. Yes, cost is also one of the factor for us.

Am not familiar with Modern Montessori at Bukit Merah... let us know if MM is good after your research ok? It is always good to have a Plan B, ie. alternative CC in case the current one fail us.

As always, do conduct both online and offline research on the CC prior to making the final decision.

What's your research on NS so far?

Hi TG,

I have personally been to Cherie Hearts, Modern Montessori International, Eager Beaver and Learning Vision myself. I also went to NS but it was during lunch time and I was told that no visit is allowed as the children are sleeping. I have put my name on the waitlist for LV and EB. For MMI there's no waitlist at all. For CH, they told me to register end of the year as I intend to put my son in CC only early next year. Here a short summary from my experience:

-MMI: I went around lunch time so the kids were sleeping and the principal personally showed me the place. There are no individual rooms and the different age group are partitioned into different section. the whole place is very neat and tidy. the principal explained that they follow the montessori curriculum which looks good too. they have indoor gym and an outdoor playground. overall it looks good. their fees is ard $600+ But my main concern is, there is NO waiting list at all!!! This is the one and only CC in the area that has no waitlist. And I cannot find much review online. I only saw 1 comments that goes something like "well, you might want to explore other options". I only saw the principal and another chinese teacher, who is a PRC, there. And the chinese teacher, as mentioned in some online feedback, is not bilingual.

-Cherie heart: very spacious and non-aircon. Every class is in a big classroom. There's a big music room which can also be converted to indoor gym. a very big waterplay area. The principal personally attended to me as well. The facilities looks good, except that it is non-aircon (my son tends to sweat alot so I prefer aircon). But when I was looking around, I feel that the teachers were unable to handle the students. I even saw some student roaming aimlessly around the compound. That day there was an excursion so most older students were not around. Overall, didn't have a very good feeling about the teachers and students there. But the fees is the cheapest around the area ($300++).

-EB: also very good facilities. there's an outdoor playground, link to the swimming pool with lessons for older kids. each age group is in an individual class room. The rooms are air-conditioned while the other areas are non-aircon which I find is a good idea. the program looks pretty ok too. the fees are ok too, $400-500. But when I was there, it was nap time for students and lunch time for teachers. Hence it look a bit messy as they were having lunch. I saw kids sleeping everywhere and didn't feel too good about that. The teachers looks ok but not impressive. Online reviews about EB is quite ok in general. there were some complains when the renovation of the swimming pool that was linked to the CC was not completed but now that everything is done up it looks good.

-Learning vision: in terms of facilities, it has the least. There's an indoor playground (basically a playhouse with slides), a small indoor waterplay area and music room. Like MMI, there are no individual rooms for the different age group. in terms of price, it is also on the higher side, $600-700. But the teachers there looks the most professional among all the cc that I went to. the students there look happy and sociable. One of the girl even came to hold my hands. I saw one group whereby the teacher was doing story-telling and she could managed the class very well and the students followed her instructions to make actions related to the story. overall, the place gave me a good feeling.

-NS: didn't get to really go in and see but I know that it has very good facilities. the fees after safra discount is $500-600 which is pretty ok. But the staff there doesn't seem very friendly and a bit stuck up. When I was enquiring, she told me that the likelihood of my son getting in is almost impossible. The priority will be given to new students whose siblings are with the cc. The feeling she gave me is "there's no place for your son here so don't bother and go somewhere else".

Overall, I am most comfortable with EB and LV. Am on waitlist now for both so will see how things goes. For NS, will try to find some time to go down and do a more thorough visit.

Hi Irene,

Comments on your inputs:

MMI: Curriculum wise, I guess MMI is the strongest among all of them. Good to find out how many vancanies are there in MMI, if too many, then it may be a problematic. Could it be the price? Do they cover PN1, PN2, N, K1, K2? or perhaps just one or two levels?

CH: Am surprised about the pricing, ie. v affordable. I think if the area is cooling, eg. with fans, then it might be fine for most children - whole day aircon may not be good for kids. If the teachers can't handle the kids, then it's a real problem, hmmm.. could be due to teacher:students ratio problem?

EB: Fees quite affordable also. Think it is worthwhile to visit during different timing, eg. 9am and/or 6pm. Well, by 2012, the swimming pool reno shld be done, ie. not a problem for you. I read in another forum about the potential bus exhaust from the interchange, not sure how serious is it... may want to stay around the compound for 30mins to observe, esp. if the children do have outdoor play for at least 30 mins.

-LV: Too expensive for me, would be even higher if you consider enrichment classes (eg. NS enrichment class is an additional $50 to $200), starting from I think K1 onwards. Thumbs up on the LV teachers profile. The holding hand girl is a sweetheart indeed, meltz.

-NS: NS staff is quite strict/no-nonsense type, I have some rub ons with them occasonally too... fortunately, the teacher in charge of my child is friendly, otherwise, it would likely be a no-go for us. Fee is now $560 if hubby is a Safra member, otherwise, $660. For my case, we were told the waiting list was over 10, and after queuing up in their list, our actual waiting time was only several weeks - 2 kids left. For whatever reasons, I think the dropout rate from NS is about 1 kid every 2-3 months... my very rough estimation, am still observing this. The napping time is between 1 to 3pm (See link to NS Timetable below).

Among the 5, LV seems to be the best, followed by EB/NS. If you are given a place in any CC, do visit them during 9am and 6pm to interview the parents :) Just to be on the safe side.

Looking forward to hear from you about NS.

Below are the links to one NS time-table &amp; meals schedule for your planning purposes (FYI only, pls don't show NS).

Hi TG:

Thanks so much for sharing the timetable and menu! These are really very useful information which some school will not even give a copy when I went for visit.

Some addtional comments and the exact price of the various center (after $300 subsidy and b4 GST):

MMI: The fee is $680. which is comparable to LV. But LV has so many students and ppl on waitlist while MMI's classes are not even full. Hence I do not feel comfortable with the school. They cover from PG (1.5 years old) till K2. ration is 1:5

CH: The fee is $380. Probably because the school is inside SAF compound so the rent is cheaper. And I understand that for staff working in the compound, they will be given priority. So probably that's the agreement between SAF and CH to provide more afforable CC to SAF staff. The principal kept telling me that the price is really very good and there's no where else that you can find a CC with similar setting at this price hahahaa. Actually I am ok with no aircon as it is at roof top so still very airy. Just that the teacher and students did not give me a very good feeling. The ratio is 1:8. FYI, they have tied up with kindermusik for enrichment classes

EB: The fee is $449 (include GST). Ratio is also 1:8. The swimming pool has already completed renovation and opened already. There is a swim school in the swimming complex that offers baby and toddler swim class (http://www.sportslifestyle.com.sg/index.html). Will probably visit at another timing to see class in action if I am really going to sign up with them. There are 2 outdoor sessions per week at 30min. The bus exhaust is quite ok I think at BM bus interchange is not a very big and busy interchange so the frequency and number of buses going there is not very high.

-LV: The fee is $650. On the high side compared to other CC. They also have different menu every week for 4 weeks and then will repeat. They do change their menu every now and then. Although I feel most comfortable with the school, the fee is quite high. This is my first child and I am planning for #2 in 1-2 year later so money is also a concern. will need to further discuss with hubby before going ahead for this.

-NS: fee is $560. Fee is quite average among all the CC. Agree that they are no-nonsense type hahaha I think the most important thing about CC is the teacher taking care of our child so really glad that your child's teacher is a nice one =) Thanks for the tip on the napping time. Will try to go probably at noon before the nap time.

Hi TG,
My elder boy is 5 yr old now n i hav another boy who is 3 yr old now, we have shifted to the east area n currently both r in a kindergarten in the east area.
When I was staying at mt faber estate, I have check out some cc for both child but sadly non I'm truly comfortable with, one of the cc I check out is nurturestar. Finally decide to put him in capstone kindy... It is very good .

>CH: The fee is $380. Probably because the
>school is inside SAF compound so the rent
>is cheaper.

Hmmm... if that is the case, either NS is taking away the profit from SAFRA discounted rental OR SAFRA rental is high, either way, loss for the parents.

>EB:... swimming complex that offers baby
>and toddler swim class

This shld be an advantage over NS. Over at NS, the younger ones only have water play in SAFRA swimming pool facilities, ie. no swimming lessons for the toddlers.

>NS: ... Will try to go probably at noon
>before the nap time.

Just in case when you are there during nap time, they might tell you "Sorry, the children are sleeping, please come again another day", I suggest that you give them a call before you go down. Their tel is 6377-0859.

Thanks Cassmania.

CH is losing it's pricing edge over other CCs now. At $830 or $530, it's only $30 lesser than NS. Therefore, unless the teachers in CH and/or curriculum are better than NS, otherwise, it's worth looking at EB, NS and even LV.

You are right TaraG, CH will lose out as they only operates 5 days, perhaps the only childcare in this area who open for 5 days. Indeed is better to look at EB or NS which operates 5.5 days

Hi Rykiel,

I also enrol my boy @ EG too . But he only start school in Oct 11. He is born in dec 09. Hopefully he will enjoy his school.

OIC.
My boy was previously from EB (in 2011 for 3 months) and I pulled him out to LV which I find is much cleaner environment and teachers more professional compare to EB's. But I do finr a couple of teachers in EB very GOOD..... like Teacher Margaret (not sure if she is still there plus one other older teacher (who has left in 201 end).
Now that we are in LV, I do find it expensive with the increase. Really hope Govt steps in to control the fee and the quality of education, service and care.

Bebe,

We are happy with Nurturestars so far. LV is not only expensive, it is very inconvenient for parking and dropping off.

Based on the National Conversation so far and what's being discussed elsewhere, I doubt that the govt will step in the intervene the fees for private childcare / preschools. At most, they may to tweak the fees for PCF.

Perhaps the fees in LV is justified by it's quality.
