1 year old baby refusing to be spoon fed

mumusings, yup. cheese/yoghurts are not necessary. actually, even milk is not necessary, as long as your child is already taking other forms of calcium and eating nutritious food.

Hi, Talking about calcium. How about tofu? What brand, type and portion size to give bb at 11 mth old now? How many times in a week to feed tofu to bb as one of the items in her porridge? I usually steam about 1 tbsp each of green vege, tofu, chicken and 2 thumb size of fish in her spinach+carrot+potato porridge. Just wonder is it safe to give tofu as noticed ingredients in tofu contains sulfur..

interesting thread and definitely something i can identify with! my bb has just turned 13mths and is also a rather picky eater. think i've tried every trick mentioned above just to get her to open her mouth.
happy.gif
so far so good, she finishes at least half (if not all) of her food nowadays. methods i've used include:

1. inducing her to open her mouth by placing a gerber's star-shaped puff in front of her mouth, then sneaking the spoon in quickly (very desperate, i know)

2. topping every mouthful with a gerber's star-shaped puff (resorted to this after bb learned to deal with mtd 1)

3. delaying feeding time

4. introducing dryish finger food like scrambled eggs, cheese, potato & carrot cubes, bread, peas etc, letting her feed/play on her own

5. letting her "feed" herself with an extra spoon and bowl containing v little food while i feed her from another bowl

6. pretending to eat (and like) her food/pretending to feed her food to her toys

7. feeding with different spoons, sometimes use chopsticks for novelty

8. praising excessively whenever she puts food into her mouth or eats whatever i feed

took v long and a mish mash of different mtds to make her more receptive to eating (2hr feeds sometimes) but i find that she is still MOST interested in outside food. i dunno if it's cos they're flavoured (at home no salt/sugar is used) or it's cos they're more interesting. am ever on the lookout for interesting menus to keep my bb eating. this whole thing is an ongoing learning process man!

hi onsansg, there's also some controversy abt soy in general. u may want to have a read:

http://www.soyonlineservice.co.nz/

i haven't stopped eating tofu but am definitely eating less of it now. pollutants, toxins and synthetic stuff seem to have made their way into many food pdts. think our best bet is everything in moderation. spread out the poison so we don't get too much of any one. :p

Thanks for the interesting info on soy and about feeding.

Enticing kid to eat/drink takes alot of creativity and patience.

For us it's been the following:
- different types of cutlery/cups/containers (not only kids' sort and plastic)
- arrangement of food on the plate
- make it a point to enjoy the meal 100% of the time (acting involved.. haha)
- offering bits of everything and anything to bb
- lots of praise (even if it's just finishing a tiny bit of something)
- yes, delaying feeding time (wait till kid asks for it)
- different types of drinks (depending) to alternate with snacks/solids
- different fruits
- putting him in a stroller with tray
- having him near us when we cook
- occasionally showing him what's in the fridge / or bringing him around stalls in the market
- mimicking eating using toy cutlery
- eating at all sorts of stalls/cafe/restaurants/hawker-centre so that he's not picky or only eats from a fixed setting (eg. kids' plates, high chair etc)

One thing I am most grateful for is that my bb can drink (medicine) liquid mixture by the teaspoon without making a fuss.

You mummies are great. I will pick some mentioned skills here. Right now, my bb at 11 mths old still refuse fruits or fruit juices. I have to mix fruits to cereal or fruit juices to cereal. She will purposely vomit out if I feed her just fruit or drink alone.

Perhaps you can choose a sweeter type of fruit like rock-melon? Adding a little sugar won't hurt. Just a tiny pinch. Or just cut fruit into very very tiny bits. I don't mix with cereal 'cos he hates it (inherited from me > hate porride and gluey things haha).

Some bb don't like sour-tasting foods. Trial and error, I guess.

mumusings, how did you get your child to willingly open his mouth for the medicine? i'm still struggling with feeding mine with a syringe. once she grows older and becomes stronger and faster, i'm not sure what sort of creative technique i will have to resort to...

onsansg, ya, i think u'll have to try different types (textures, tastes) till u find something she likes.
happy.gif

I use a tea spoon so that it looks like syrup
happy.gif
We try to make it look yummy by pretending to eat it. And afterwards, go "wow" and "good boy".

Hi, I tried mashed potatos, greenpeas+carrots with 1 scoop of cereal mix into some soup for consistency to feed bb this morning. hope with the lots of fibre, she can move her bowel better instead of hard stool pellets...

Too much of ingredients may be quite heaty and dry. I find that potatoes alone, or max 2 items together works better. Liquid still best. Now the kiddo punctually poops within an hour after waking up in the morning, or after some diluted juice.

onsansg, there's a cereal by nestle that has prune in it. have u tried that before? i hear it helps with bowel movements. is your bb drinking enough water also?

yesterday, i gave my bb some fish, potato (cubes), peas, corn and carrot – all steamed. i also added some unsalted butter. she gobbled everything up really quickly.

Good for you, Xuanting! Keep it up

have a qn though: did u boil the pig trotters in its packaging? plastic won't melt? please tell me where u got it/the brand – would love to have some too!

Hi. My mom got it from ntuc. Comes in a silver package. Cut open the silver package and you will find a bag of the trotter (clear thick plastic). only after boiling do you cut the plastic bag open. Very safe. I think the same brand carries herbal chicken? Haven't tried it yet though.

Here's the pic:

Anyway will put up a post on my blog about it soon.

Hi Mummies, thanks a lot for the tips. I will follow some of the recipes.

I think my bb indeed doesn't drink much water as I just heard that brown rice cereal contains too much fibre and heaty; conjunctively, I've also started a diff milk formula. Either one could be the cause for her digestion prob leading to constipation. Also, I could have steamed too much of mince pork for her dinner porridge besides feeding her fish and veggies. i'm removing item by item to determine its cause.

Yesterday, I started feeding her steamed grated apple into cereal and then evening, on mashed bananas. She poohed twice (hope, can clear all the old pooh pooh out)...

You're welcome to try the recipes, Onsansg. I'm also very new to cooking and just doing my best given whatever is in the fridge. Agee with Xuanting. Too much bananas will backfire. Stire to hi fibre fruits like apples. Good to hear your daughter is pooping well!

Hi Xuanting,
Think the package can be found in the section where all the curry sauces and near toufu. You can ask the staff I guess. Not sure 'cos I haven't gone to NTUC yet. Will let you know after my next visit.

Hi All, I found another remedies for solving the hard pellets constipation. Papaya Juice mix with Banana into Cereal. Soft pooh all within half hour.

Another remedy, boil sweet potato porridge (mashed), feed grated apple juice.

Hi Xuanting,

The trotters are $8.97 if you're still on this thread. Can be found near the packed sausages at most NTUCs.

Hi,do you place bb in a playpen? Mine, just reached 1 yr old, not walking yet..prefers to sit and seldom stands. Not sure, should I get her a playpen and if so, wonder how long would she use it? Like the sarong experience, started her at 5th month and she only uses it once. Now, looking to sell it off...

Playpen is safe and good until maybe 16months. Really depends on height of child and her agility. Safer than crib because there's lesser chance of it toppling over. Mine could climb out of playpen around 14 months and didn't want to be 'trapped' in there once he realise he can walk and grab things in the way.

Whatever it is, supervision is needed. Good thing I didnt buy baby carrier 'cos he's only interested in running about and doesn't like to be tightly wrapped. It's been like that since birth. (Didn't swaddle after the 2 month 'cos he started turning and pulling off the cloth by himself.) You have to observe her speed of growth. If she is already able to climb/walk, likelihood is playpen is better for sleeping. not for playing.

Thanks, mumusings.

Any mommies can advise me - I need to know how often does your bb urinates? I am shocked when I put her on cloth diapers now, due to yeast infection nappy rash. She is 1 year old but seems to be urinates very often - like every 5 mins..roughly, how long will the interval of urine for bb as they grow older and this longer interval can be seen by about how old of their age?

I can't remember how often bb used to urinate but if it's too often, you'd better check with a doctor to be safe.

Hi, thanks. Sent bb for blood test to rule out diabetes and kidney prob. Thank God, it's normal. Now, doc said try to half her daily fluid intake to monitor how often she urines in an hour. Hopefully, her pee frequency will slow down. Now, every 5mins, we change her cloth nappy. How we know of her frequency is we decided to off her from disposable diaper due to nappy rash yeast infection. And, her pee frequency shocked us. On second thot, i think could be she was too soiled or urine too much due to high amount of daily fluid, always pee that triggers yeast infection.

aiyah. my daughter got reinfected again on the 11th day morning. Fungicort works for 10days. Brought her to see bb doc again, prescribed stronger steroid, neoderm. now some of her nappy area like charcoal black, blackish red. headache. doc said discoloration is due to post-inflammotary, wil clear off in few weeks tims. still change and wash her round the clock , and night time gotto wake up at 12.00am, 3am and 5.30am just to dab her nappy with wet cottonwool, fan dry, put nappy cream and change to new disposable diapers. I panda eyes liao, hopefully she recovers this time. already 1 month from 1st infection..

Hi Mumusings, i've tried hard to relocate this chatline. Phew, finally found it. I like to chat with you. I tink i've finally conquered my baby's 3month-long of nappy rash yeast infection to an acceptable state today. Fungicort, daktacort, neoderm and all steroid creams apparently did not work at all for her. Last week, i finally relent to try a S$3 "Baby Love" Pricky Heat Dusting Powder, product of Singapore, by Fook Sang Tong. It seems to reduce the yeast pimply red dots a great deal. To think of it, I have spent hundreds of dollars with repeated visits to bb doc and bb skin specialist, but a $3 herb powder made of "Qin Yin Hua" seems to control the problem. Qin Yin Hua is what we use to brew to drink, in removing toxic and heatiness.

Hi, to all who read my msg above. Please ignore it. My urgent advise, DON'T USE THE "BABY LOVE PRICKY HEAT DUSTING POWDER" ON NAPPY RASH. The medical hall shop at punggol who sold it to me, gave the false information. my bb responded well the last time with this powder, and i was delighted. however, the rash came back yesterday and i applied the powder on her nappy part. this round, my bb cried. the nappy area now turns red. i called up manufacturer of the powder, Fook Sang Tong n they told me, the herb powder is for external use as the mint ingredient is too cooling for baby's nappy delicated skin area.

actually my daughter is like this before.. when she was 1 year old she dont want to eat.. until 3years old. That's why i just gave him a good quality milk.

I think you got to use a small spoon for your kid. It will be much easier. The only way is to endure it as it will take a long long time to feed your kid when they are at this young age!
