Hi,

I'm being assigned to Dr Chua Ka Hee for my ivf. Anyone has completed IVF under him? Please do share your experience with him. Thank you.

I'm currently seeing him for IUI. Wanted to do IVF but he said we should do 1 round of IUI first since my HyFoSy shows no blockage of tubes and my hubby's sperms are normal. I have endometriosis with cysts diameter 3cm on both sides and low AFC (only 4 in one ovary and none in the other) though.

What's your experience w Dr Chua?

Hi there! I didn't do any IVF with Dr Chua before. Thought to share my experience, i hope it helps :) I recently had my ovarian cyst removed and was done by Dr Chua. Surgery wise, i think Dr Chua did a great job. My cyst was 9cm, and he quite confidently told me it could be removed by keyhole. Yet, some of the other drs at the soc mentioned kiv open surgery. And ive had friends with similar sized cysts which were removed by open.

My surgery was indeed keyhole. I had no complications and was discharged quickly. Pain was v manageable too (didnt even need painkillers after a day).

Bedside mannerism wise, he is nice enough to explain my condition (i have endometriosis) to my husband, and got show pictures somemore, but he does rush through explanations abit (which i think is pretty common for restructured hosp drs becuz of the tight TATs).

Overall I'm quite happy with him :) . Will be sticking to him for awhile i guess, as hubby and i are trying for kids too and may have diff conceiving because of my endometriosis. Wishing you the best and hoping for a great success for you! :)

Hi All,

I decided to change to Dr Sadhana as she was recommended by a forum friend. Can't comment on both Dr Sadhana and Dr Chua since I have not started IVF.

I have met both doctors and both are friendly and patient. Had good impression with both of them.

By the way, how do you all know that you have endometriosis? Just curious.

Hi, I would like to share my experience with dr Chua. My DH and I have been trying for some time (OPK, clomid, TI) and finally decide to go to KKH via subsidized route (we got a referral from polyclinic). Dr Chua only asked us to take the tests that are necessary as we did consult a private fertility specialist previously. We wanted to go directly to IVF but Dr Chua encouraged us to try So-IUI first. We did not succeed that cycle. Two months later, we started on IVF/ICSI and we succeeded. Dr Chua was patient and encouraging throughout and we were both comfortable and confident going into IVF with him. Initially my DH wanted to go with "more popular" doc since we would be considered private once we start IVF. I was more comfortable to go with Dr Chua and did not want to rejoin the Queue. We are very happy with the outcome and I am glad that everything went smoothly :) Dr Chua was there at my ER, and also the one who did the ET (1 blastocyst). I took the full HL, and did not return to work (just occasionally check of emails).

Also want to thank all the nurses at the KKHIVF who make sure I am comfortable and alright. There are pretty long wait but this is really not within the nurses or docs control.

Hi,

I have been a patient with Dr Chua since he took over my 2nd fresh IVF cycle case. He did for me: an endometrial scratch in September 2018, occytes pick-up in November 2018(done by another doctor as Dr Chua was on reservice), transferred a frozen blastocyst in May 2019 & another 2 frozen embryos in September 2019.

I am now 9 weeks pregnant with fraternal twins inside. I am a subsidised patient and so far, my appointments with Dr Chua at Clinic D of KKH have been pleasant.

I'm not sure if I'll change gynae in the months to come... but so far, my experiences and gut feel are not telling me to move on yet. :)

Hi
I've just had an unsuccessful frozen cycle w Dr Chua. He did a Day 6 Blastocyst transfer for me. We still have 2 more frozen blastocysts. You said you transferred 2 frozen, are they blastocysts or day 2/3 embryo?

Hello Annie,

The 2 frozen embryos are of Day 3 (Grade 3).

In fact, I requested to transfer the previous frozen blastocyst first as it was an A*grade. I thought it might help me be pregnant. It was only a borderline pregnancy with 10.5units of hcg, which 2 days later, the blood test dropped to less than 5units.

Hope that helps. :)

How come you have both frozen blastocyst and embryos? I thought it's either/or? I got 19 eggs retrieved and Dr Chua advised to freeze them at blastocyst stage, which only 3 survived.

Annie,
From my 2nd fresh cycle in November 2018, I only had 2-Day 3 embryos and 1-Day 5 blastocyst. But my progesterone level was way too high then, so a doctor(but not Dr Chua) recommended to cancel the cycle and wait for my body hormones to return to its normal state.

The embryologist froze the Day 3 embryos first and 2 days later, they called to ask for consent to freeze the Day 5 blastocyst.

They said they couldnt make out of the grade of the 3rd embryo on Day 3(maybe growing slowly??), so they wanted to give it 2 more days to observe... and it became a blastocyst on Day 5, so they froze it. Haha.

Ah I see. Congratulations on your double joy on the way :)

Recently went back for a review with Dr Chua. He advised us to transfer the remaining 2 blastocysts at one go. We took that option to increase the chances but my hubby is worried about carrying twins.

How are you feeling with your twins inside you? Is it your first pregnancy? Dont mind if I ask how old are you? I'm 30 and my hubby is 32.

Hi Annie,
Thank you for your well-wishes! :)

I just ended 1st trimester, yahoo! Appetite is gradually getting better, mild nausea is subsiding.

So far so good with the 2 inside, maybe too early to comment. Yes it is my 1st pregnancy at age 38 haha, so I guess it is still early to share much.

Upon reflection, i would not transfer the last 2 at one go because it means i would have to start fresh cycle again if implantation was unsuccessful. I told my hubby if i try 1 at a time, i would still be left with one more hope should the ET be unsuccessful. (Sole reason: Because we have decided to stop at 2 fresh cycles and I dont wish to jab myself anymore.)

You are still young whereas time is not in my court. My husband made the decision for us to follow doctor's instruction to transfer 2. He said if 2 still cannot, its fated and we have done what we can, so no regrets.

Now we are always talking about domestic help matters, financial and baby bonus matters etc. Didnt expect the last 2 embryos to implant.

Congrats on passing the 1st trimester! I feel excited for you, you've gone thru so much. Honestly I told my hubby I'm not going thru another fresh cycle after all the jabs and medications for just 1 round, and you survived 2!

Now that we've decided to put in the last two and there's a chance that both might implant, I'm focusing on putting on weight as I'm still underweight and come back for the last round of BT maybe in May '20. Is there any special diet that you stick to? Did you go for accupuncture or any TCM? I've stopped those after the BT and not sure if I should resume.

Thanks for sharing!

Annie,
I have been taking TCM for 1.5 years after my first fresh cycle failed. I go to Thong Chai Medical Institution in Sengkang as I live in this area. It is FOC and i drop a donation at every visit. I did accupuncture with them before my frozen blastocyst was transferred, but it was only a borderline pregnancy.

I chicken-out to do accupuncture again when it was time to transfer the last 2 embryos. (Still felt afraid of the needles on tummy while lying down, even though I had gone thru ivf jabs haha.)

Special diet hmm... Other than daily folic acid, i dont take any other supplements. Oh but i changed the water system at home to alkaline water instead. I sleep on magnetic pad (supposedly improved blood circulation and overall improvement etc). I jog once/twice a week. I dont take cold drinks or cold cut fruits. Coffee/tea is not my daily beverage. I seldom choose fried food as my meals.

Hmm...thats all abt my lifestyle & diet.

I see. I dont like fried or processed food and cold drinks either but coffee is my weakness haha..

I previously went to Chung Hwa Institution at Toa Payoh. It's subsidized so the costs are pretty reasonable. But the accupuncture is very painful and sometimes the wait is very long.

Also tried accupunture at the popular Dr Zou's TCM clinic at AMK but find that they're very production line style, less than 5 min consultation and everyone gets the same treatment.

Do you find TCM helpful?

I tried the famous dr zhou at AMK too but only once haha. I find the entire processes/environment messy, a number to call to refix appointment but nobody ever picks up & costly treatment/medications. I didnt feel good with the place, so i stopped haha.

I believe in TCM, so i will say yes to your question. Actually, I have fibroids of max. 3cm & Adenomyosis. Other than that, no blocked tubes. My AMH in Jan 2018 was 1.7 (ng/mL). Is that low or average, i didnt bother to ask doctor haha. (Dont want to know so much). But no private gynaes that I had gone to in the past or KKH gynaes had ever asked me to do any keyhole surgery etc.

I dont know what's the condition of my uterus now but I trust that if the embryos implanted afterall and so far so good, I believe the 1.5years of drinking brewed bitter medicine has helped somehow. Plus my faith aswell.

Hi.
I'm self-employed, so I threw the HL cert away. Cant remember now.

Lets wait for the rest to reply to your query.

Yes im a patient of Dr Chua too.. im on Day 6 of my ivf injection. Its my fist time doing ivf

All the best of best to you!

I will be in my week 32 this Wed, following Dr Chua.

Anything unsure, just ask here or p.m. me if you wish to!

Cheers.

Hi i recently went for my Day8 scan n it showed i had 16 follicles. The biggest was 16mn, 1 was 15mm, some were 14.5, 13 & 12.5. The smallest 2 were 11.5 & 10.5mm. My lining was 8.3mm. My amh was 2.2.

I read that the eggs have to be roughly 18 - 20mm before retrival.. do u rmbr ur follicle size for ur last scan?

Hi!
In both of my fresh cycles, I dont have many follicles. At the most, less than 10. Most were smaller than 15mm, with only a few being more than 15mm to 20mm.

Endometrium lining was thick, for example, around 11T(triple)mm.

From 2nd fresh cycle, blastocyst was a grade A* but couldnt implant.
Remaining 2 embryos were merely Grade 3, and turn out to be my twins now.

Dont focus too much on follicle sizes... its for the doctors to decide on retrieval and pairing with the sperms...

Dont be like me, focusing too much on grading of the embryos too. It only fed my ego then. The reality was different for me.

Just eat & drink well, and be ready to accept whatever outcome in your stride. Life as normal routine. Happy thoughts.

:)

Alrite thank u! Im going for my egg retrival on 24 Apr

Thats tomorrow! Whooray to your last jab and fasting! It will be over soon.

Enjoy every process. The nurses are kind too. Stay calm that they know what they are doing. Dr Chua will do a good job. I never had to suffer badly from his post-surgery.

:)

Hi, I am 40 and have adenomyosis too. We have tried many rounds of IVF and haven’t succeed. We just had a failed round of frozen cycle with a day 4 blastocyst. It really helps to read that you have succeeded and are in very similar conditions to mine. Congratulations :) We have one day 2 embryo left and we have exhausted all our fresh cycles and 2 frozen cycles co-funding. I have also decided to take a break. The mental and emotional resilience to see this through is making me very tired. Can I check what treatments did you do for adenomyosis? I am with Dr Liu at KKH, was with Dr Tan before be left. They suggested same treatments which is to suppress the adenomyosis by stopping my menses. I have also been seeing TCM for about 2 years, both meds and acupuncture. I am not very religious with my medication but I guess I will be from now.

Sorry, accidentally pressed post.

No doctors ever suggested any surgery abt the Adenomyosis. So i merely drank TCM faithfully for 1.5yr, thinking that it might help in my uterus instead one day as western doctor did not recommend any action.

0h i just remembered. I had an endometrial scratching done by Dr Chua, which resulted in a borderline pregnancy (blastocyst tsfr) and 6 mths later, another 2 Day-3 embryos implanted finally.

P.m. me or reply here if you wish to ask anything else ok. :)

What does the endometrial scratching does? Will it help with the adenomyosis? Your TCM is aware of your adenomyosis? So the medication is for helping with it? Sorry for my many questions. I am currently seeing Dr Zhong Xi Ming at Eu Yan Sang.

From the Hysterosalpingo-foam-sonography report, there seemed to be an extremely fine line or something that ran across my uterus. So Dr Chua suggested taking a look at the inside and if theres really nothing, he would then do an endometrial scratching. Im not sure if doctors would propose a day surgery like this upon request or what. For me, it was a recommendation after having seen my report.

Though i have adenomyosis, my body doesnt display most of the symptoms. So i dont know if a scratch did help afterall ornot. I also didnt link the final pregnancy to the scratch.

TCM knew about my adenomyosis and slight fibroids too. TCM is holistic treatment. About boosting or balancing the main organs. So I dont think the medicine was specifically about treating adenomyosis alone. More of Yin-Yang qi etc....

Hi ladies, I am also a ivf patient with Dr Chua. Did so iui last year Dec but failed so decided to start ivf instead.

I have been with Dr Chua for a year now, treating my thyroid condition and then polyp removal which happened today.

By right should be able to start fet after this but I'm hoping to try naturally this cycle before my fet. The nurses advise rest for 2 weeks before any intercourse but that will mean I have to waste this cycle.

Overall our experience with dr Chua have been smooth and pleasant. We feel really comfortable with him and so far my ER and polyp removal were smooth and minimal pain.

Hopefully we will get some good news with him too.

Hello iibears,

Jiayou to you too!

Perfectly understand how you feel about wasting a cycle. Time is ticking away!

I only wish to add that baby comes when we least expects it... so maybe when we dont rush our body/mind, and learn to let go bit by bit by placing focus on other stuffs, good news might arrive one day.

Agree that post-effect of a surgery with Dr Chua has minimal pain.

All the best in your journey!

Hi all
Just wanna share my experience with dr chua so far, which I will recommend, though I have not succeed ivf yet. Sorry if i too lor soh haha.

I started with Dr Tan HH in Jul 2019, first consultation was quite a rush through i feel, afterall he has too many patients. So plan for ivf in Sep 2019. But Dr Tan was clearing leaves, ER and ET was done by Dr Jerry Chan and resulted in ectopic. So the first review after BT with Dr Tan was again a quick one and he explained abt chemical pregnancy and tell me my hcg must drop. Sounded very crude. After that he left, and my case was passed on to Dr Chua. When he asked if its my first pregnancy, I told him, I dont even know if I am preg, since the way Dr Tan puts it across is like u cannot be pregnant . Then Dr Chua says yes i am definitely preg based on my hcg climbing up (abnormal rate), and he tried to scan but only manage to found a spot near tube/ovary instead of uterus and told me in a very gradual manner about it. I just like the way of how he break bad news to u, not direct but taking care of your feelings and still make the point across. After that first visit with him, had to repeatedly go back kkh for BT and ultrasound scan every 2 days and review with him for almost 1-2 weeks, finally decided to go with the jab to terminate.
After that, has been continuing to follow up with Dr Chua and all is good, was ready for 2nd round of fresh but hit Covid, so waited till Sep 2020 for ny 2nd fresh. He increased another jab for me this round, more eggs were retrieved, but it still failed. Then he suggested to go with frozen cycle next, which happened in Nov 2020. I had 1 d3 from 1st and 1 d5 from 2nd, so he said to thaw the d3 till blast and thaw d5 and transfer 2. Sounds like taking a gamble cos u wont know how they will turn out. On ET day, after dr Chua came out from the lab checking on the embryos, he sounded very positive that the d3 has grown well into a good blast, and d5 is still a bit fragmented cos just thawed. In my previous ET with him, he also sounded positive that we had a good d5 blast to transfer. The way he puts it always give you hopes! But later on, the embryologist came out and told us the d3 to blast was grade B (good), and the d5 is actually not good with surviving rate of less than 50% but doc still choose to transfer. Well i guess his intention is good in that some thinks by placing back into womb maybe a good condition/environment for the embies. Well turns out it still failed.
During these reviews with him after failed BT, he will always give the sympathy concern that I am not preg again. Usually i see him at clinic A where he has lots of patients too. Recent visit at clinic D, he seems to have more time spare and explain and answer all my questions very clearly and patiently.

Overall, he is definitely a doc that you will comfortable with, with patience and all. Lets hope my 3rd cycle will be a success Gonna do endo scratch this time round plus loading myself for Vit D! Cos this is what he sent me for test after all the failed tries and realised my vit D too low.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us.

All the very very best to you.
IVF warrior, persevere!

I've been attended to by both Dr Jerry Chan and subsequently Dr Chua too. They're both pleasant and have a nice manner about them. I find the consults rushed for both of them, but I guess that's the problem with public hospitals in general?

Dr Chua did an ET for me that unfortunately didn't stick. I only had one blast left and was a bit disappointed about it though he sounded optimistic. Maybe I looked stressed or kancheong because he told me to 'just relax' a few times, which made me feel a bit like a nutcase :D Overall because of his positive notes I kept my hopes up for a while during my 2ww but my blood test was negative. For Dr Chua, he would ask if you've any questions, so come prepared with the questions. Otherwise, he won't share anything extra apart from how many blasts you have, and seems to be in a hurry to rush off (prob for another procedure or something), so it did feel a bit impersonal. My hubby and I had a few questions later but had to rely on google lol.

I'm thinking of switching to private after this since I don't have any blasts left with KKH not because of the experience with Dr Chan or Dr Chua, but because the wait times in the clinic and pharmacy have been horrendously long sometimes.

Hihi!

Thank you for sharing your experience here with us! :)
I think... it is all about timing. Not about the doctor.

So...i wish you all the very bestest best!

Hopefully we will get some good news with him too.

hi dear, can i check, do you mean dr chua is able to treat your thyroid condition? if yes, may i ask what was your thryoid issue?

Hihi!

I had elevated TSH, was prescribed thyroxine to bring the level down to optimal level of <2.5
We did our 2nd fet with Dr Wong last month and failed.

Dr Chua is my IVF doctor and I continue to see him for my pregnancy (delivery) after the successful IVF. He is very gentle and very skillfull. I have zero pain for all of my egg retrieval. I kinda trust his judgement and very comfortable with him. He is also very caring, encouraging and friendly.

Planning to have a c-section with him as I heard that he also has a good stitching skills. Which I believe as he is always gentle and no pain at all post egg retrieval.

Hi hi. How many eggs were retrieved by Dr Chua? Same experience as me, I didnt have pain after egg retrieval, minor spotting lasted me only 1 day. However, I had mc this week, still I am planning to do 2nd cycle with him.

Hi, for my first IVF, we managed to retrieve 8 eggs and for second one managed to retrieve 10 eggs. Good luck for your second cycle!

Thank you! How long the gap between 2 fresh cycles? I only had 2 blastocysts from my 1st fresh cycle.
