AUTISM, ADHD, ADD, etc - SUPPORT GROUP!

Hi mummies,

My child is turning 2 and currently attending mainstream playgrp. Any parents can share if your kids still continue to attend mainstream childcare while going to Eipic center(ie. am at Eipic and noon at childcare) is it too tiring for the kid and if this arrangment is possible?.

He managed to average 90% across all 4 subjects. I will update again after the next SA paper and at the end of this year. Consistency would mean his supplements and diet are indeed helping.

My son has just finished his Mid-Year exams in CHS Primary 3. I will let you know how he did eventually. He has ADHD symptoms but I have been controlling his diet and supplementing him.

Hi mommies,

We should have a support whatsapp group on ASD. Information can be shared more timely. What do you think? Anybody interested I can be group admin.

I want to ask any good books to share on training dealing with high-function autism children?

Thanks.
Hello

I was looking for a wahtsup group on ASD & I found your suggestion. If it is availlable, add my no : +966505963997

hi mummies, my boy turning 3 yrs old in coming Aug, but he still dun talk yet only babbles. he got a very bad temper which can try to knock his head on the ground. we try to bring him to kkh for assessment but the doc says he might be slow so not fair to assess him yet. but till now i feel signs of autism is showing specially the temper anger part. any mommies can share on the pte speech N Ot therapy? waiting list for the school for my sons is still long . so trying to find other ways to help him. thanks alot

Hi Tootyling,

This post might be a little late but I am sharing it so other parents with the same issues may benefit too.

From your description, it does sound like your son's temper tantrums may have been a result of being unable to express his needs although I can't say for sure since I haven't seen him. For non-verbal children, it can get frustrating when he really wants something yet have no way to let people know.

Regarding your concern for autism, it is true that late talking can be a red flag for autism. But for a child to be diagnosed as autism, he will also need to have other symptoms too. Please refer to this link for the full diagnostic criteria.
https://www.autismspeaks.org/what-autism/diagnosis/dsm-5-diagnostic-criteria

To answer your question on speech therapy and occupational therapy:

A Speech therapist can help your son in the following ways:

1) Find an alternative form of communication (e.g. sign language, PECS or AAC). This will have the effect of reducing frustration for everyone and will help with his temper tantrums. The speech therapist will need to assess your son to see which is the best approach to use.
2) If indeed he falls on the autism spectrum, he is likely to also have social communication issues. A speech therapist can help him with social skills such as eye contact, turn-taking, joint attention etc.
3) Help him learn to understand and follow instructions
4) Provide advice on how to improve his home and school environment to help him learn and participate

An occupational therapist can help your son in the following ways:
1) Address any sensory processing issues such as hyper-or hypo-sensitivity to sounds, lights, smell and touch etc
2) Help him with his fine motor skills like writing, isolating his index finger etc
3) Teach him daily living skills like toiletting, putting on his clothes etc

In addition, here are some books which you might find helpful while you await therapy:
1) More than Words (Hanen Program) [Speech]
2) The out of synch child [Sensory Processing issues]

Good Luck!
Jia

Hi mums
I have a 6y6m old son, he has ASD, and now in local mainstream PS. I feel like his school doesn’t support him hence the doctor said I can either move him to pathlight or dovercourt intl sch. Even thou all doctors he went and assessed him said that he is academically capable to be in local sch, his IQ is 134. But seeing him being treated unfair in his current sch makes me want to move him. Any advises or experiences from mummies here who has ASD kids going to pathlight or intl sch will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi.
am a new mum to this forum. I have had my son in St Gerard' s from February and i am glad I found this place. Off course I was sceptical about it in the beginning as there were some reviews that was negative . But nothing like checking it out and talking to the Principal and staff and therapists. The team is amazing and the Principal is an amazingvlady who is knowledgeabke and practical. Very diwn to earth. Very dedicated but kind with chikdren and she has a ni ninsense attitude with the staff. Teachers are very meticulius with rhe feedback rhat they provise on the child in a daily basis and very caring. I became convinced when my son started missing school and would start asking me to take his unifirm early in rhe morning wanting to go to school. His inititation in wanting to seek out to his classmates when they are playing is so encouraging. The therapists are anazing and if I am not wrong. The number of chikdren are increasing . I do pick up and drop off my son and so get a chance to talk to the teachers daily and some iof the parents waiting outside. Feel very warm with them. I am happy that a place has veen found for my boy who is accepted and embraced and very touched by their gestures. I started my son on the weekly ST and OT and i see him making some gains in some areas. They send me notes on thingsvthat take placevduringvthe sessions which arevuseful to be practised at home. Hence thit that it would be useful for you guys who would need any feedback on st gerard's.
Hello Mommies, I am not sure if this message will reach any one of you as I don't see any new posts here. My son has recently been diagnosed with Autism and has Global Developmental Delay. I am looking at St,Gerards, Mountbtten as an option. Will really appreciate any feedback about the school. I read all good reviews in 2016 and it gives me a lot of comfort level but will appreciate any updated feedback. Thank you !

Hi there, just wanted to share that I am a private music teacher specializing in young children (2-6yo). Through word of mouth, I was blessed to meet 3 students who are on the autism spectrum. They are now undergoing music therapy with me to improve their cognitive and social skills.

One student is a non-verbal 3yo who was able to sound out some letters after 6 lessons. He is able to hum tunes and I am using tunes to pass on knowledge which was otherwise "unteachable" before.

My second student is also a non-verbal 5yo who is now able to play the piano. His music therapy started a little late, so I am still working on his speech, but he is a bright young boy who understands what we are doing in class, and is able to play the piano with both hands :)

My third student is a 5yo introvert with a fear of new things. It took him 1 year of non-stop crying before he could attend kindergarten. In our first lesson, he cried when he saw the piano. However, through music and guiding him to interact with a wide range of instruments, I was able to pique his curiosity and teach him to play the piano.

I can be reached at [email protected] :)

For a child who has ADHD and ASD, we are worried that our son is not ready for primary school in 2020 and will most likely feel completely overwhelmed in class, so we decided to bring him test IQ to determine his ability and performance level, and whether we should put him into mainstream.

And we are relieved that he is normal IQ.
The psychologist is using WPPSI-IV test meant for 2-7 years old.

My son surprised me because he can actually follow most of the instructions and understand what the psychologist meant.
I thought he was going to fare badly but apparently he did well just that he is very inattentive.

Hi everyone. I was looking for a WhatsApp support group but there doesn't seem like one. I can start one. Do pm me.

I was looking at it too. I read about it, and discovered, it really depend on what is the condition of your child before you decide if you want to take part of this method. You can DIY if u have time. Are u a sthm?

Hi, Prunia
I'm in the same situation with you now.
My son 5y6m now (K1) mild autism I guess..
I'm upset everytime I see him being treated unfair by the teacher in classroom. The more I see the more I want to cry . Really..
Trying to find better school for him, but also not easy
btw...for me, going to Pathlight for Primary 1 is not bad. He can learn many things without too much stress, and so do the parents. At least until he is good enough for mainstream secondary school.
I don't want to pressure him, he got stress already from school. he is happy with his own way, my son loves drawing very very much.

Oh dear.. I hope you and your son is coping well. Are you planning go stay in the preschool or are you looking for suitable schools to support him.

I can look out for preschools that have good support for you if u’d like! Which area do you prefer?

If found the right one, the psychologists will definitely know how to bring his attention back and redirect him when possible! I’m glad to here your son’s IQ test was done smoothly - I’ve heard of cases where mummies retook IQ tests because it does not really reflect them.

Any good recommendation of Psychologists for IQ test? Need to retake

You could search Miss Sharon Lam. I’m observing her for my stint for my Masters, and so far I am impressed with how she ensures the test reflects the child accurately.

There are other good names (i.e.Dr Penny Tok, Adeline Chin) but I have not seen them in action before, so I won’t be able to comment.

Go look them up before making a decision :)

My Son is turning 2 in April this year. Non verbal and he is on weekly speech theraphy for almost 2 months. He flare up whenever we told him to express his thoughts by saying a few words or by hand gesture. And he is not willing to learn and always show his displeasure by screaming on top of his lungs. He is not pointing and not interested on the things we point to him too - as if he never hear us telling him but we are sure that he don’t have hearing problem. His eye contact is very minimal.

He cannot understand simple instructions and not interested in toys. The speech therapist did highlight that he is not autistic as he is able to socialise. But he has shown too many red flags of autism.

Anyone encounter this before as speech delay only?

Hi Rhea!

I hope you are coping well! Your son must be feeling really frustrated as well - to have needs but am unable to get them met due to the lack of social-communication.

I am a Special Needs therapist at a private paediatric practice, so I hope my input may be helpful! The ASD possibility is the least of my concern IMO as a professional. Your son is young, so we may be able to just observe first. It seems like the priority would be to help him find a way to communicate his needs and wants through appropriate means, rather than through tantrums.

If he is not interested in toys, what is his interest in? A reinforcer assessment to determine his interests can help you find something he highly prefers to work on communication there.

Similarly, check on your’s and your speech therapist’s delivery - is it triggering him to flare up? Are you forcing him to “say” too much? Would a more child-directed, less structured approach be more ideal to encourage his communication?

If it is purely a behavioural issue, there are things we will eliminate and evaluate to find out the root cause of the flare ups. Speak to your paediatrician or speech therapist for referrals to a therapist who can help!

If you have any questions, feel free to pm me.

Hi parents, Do you have any recommendations which therapist able to guiding social-emotional? My son next year turning 7.

Hi mommies, I'm looking for recommended Speech Therapy for my son (6yrs old this July) urgently. He is verbal but still difficult to make long sentences, only can say 3-4 words.
Only me is not enough to teach him every day, very tiring!
He is going to do IQ test this year for P1. Hope at least can go to Pathlight. As I know his cognitive is not low. He likes to learn by himself, hobby drawing, puzzle, alphabets, numbers, colors and so on.
But his eipic teacher referred him to Eden/Rainbow .
If u have any recommended ST teacher, please info me soon. Thanks mommies!

2yrs old a bit too early to get a proper diagnosis as there are other signs that need to be considered, even when it comes to socialising.

Some NT kids do have speech delay until a later age.

What did the speech therapist mean when she said your son is able to socialize (hence he is not autistic)?

One of my students is a 5yr old non-verbal autistic. He is also not pointing and cannot follow what we point to (lack of joint attention). He is very good-natured (innate personality) so although he has attention issues and speech issues, he will hug me when I ask for a hug, and high-five in return. I'm not sure if these count as socializing behavior?

Hihi,

He is only interested in his cartoon videos. Other than that he doesn't show any interest in any particular toys. Speech therapist advice us to encourage him to gesture to us on his needs and at the same time to motivate him to start talking. But before we met the number of cycles that we need to fulfill, he will flare up.

Before he turns 1yo, he can actually greet us and clap his hands by following instructions. But after 1yo, he is gradually losing it. That is when we call out his name and never get any response from him. He is not able to understand us and no joint attention from him.

Besides toys, he is not interested in alot of things like the usual kids will prefer. He is scare of going down the pool and dislike sand play as well. We have put him on speech therapists for almost 3 months but not much improvement on his speech.

As far I know, speech could be delay but it won't be affecting their response. I have friends with speech delays kids yet they display good eye contact and maintain the joint attention. They are able to communicate and display their needs through their actions. But my boy not only has speech delay but alot of milestones he is not able to meet as well.

Therapist did mention he is able to socialise thus he is not consider autistic but I guess maybe I should seek 2nd opinion.

Hihi,

Actually my boy cannot even understand simple instructions so I do not understand why my speech therapists consider him as socialising.

How to socialise and play along when you don't even know what is going on?

Hi Rhea, I read from a book (The Verbal Behavior Approach by Mary Lynch Barbera) that even if a child only has language delay, ABA/VB therapy can help them more than speech therapy alone. You can highlight to the therapist to work on following instructions, work on his social interactions (say hi or bye), or work on requesting for things properly. If you have the resources to give ABA/VB therapy a try, perhaps it could be beneficial to your son, even if the ST says he is not autistic. Trying a range of things to help your son could be useful, hang in there! :)

Hi

is your son attending any childare or EIP? I really think EIP helps a lot. my son has speech delay too but he was not diagnosed as autism for now. my boy is 2 years plus this year. he used to have what all you mentioned above when he was 2 yrs old but he really starts to get better now after EIP. can see the difference after two months in school.

Hi.
May I know how much you may afford.... Market rates now a day at least per hour $100above. Depends therapist certificate.
Seriouly only giverment rate is more cheaper.

Hi mummies, if you guys are looking for a good aba service provider, I highly recommend autism partnership. Their treatment is intensive but can see improvements within a short period of time. it is also very different from other aba out there.
