Anyone with ASD/autism child registering to enter P1 next year?

Appreciate ur inputs on ur decision to put ur child in SPED or mainstream schools.

Hi, I spoke with a parent regarding your question. She sent her kid to a mainstream school because her son was only diagnosed with ASD when he was 7. By then, he was already P1 and it was too late to switch to a special ed school because every school was full. Her son is high functioning, so he was able to cope with the studies in mainstream school. However, her gripe with mainstream schools is that most kids do not understand autism and her son was often bullied. They also did not have sufficient counselors and teachers who knew how to stop the bullying when they saw it.

On the other hand, she felt that mainstream school exposed her son to "what is out there". By interacting with and observing regular kids, her son would show interest to participate in activities like school events, sports, or join CCAs. Her son is now 16, taking O Levels this year, and is in the videography club in school
