IVF Mummies 2018

I think it's an individual test. you mean you want to do both tests? Not necessary. Usually they will refer you to do OSCAR, if test results are non-satisfactory, they will escalate to Harmony.

For reference:

Provided there are no complications with your pregnancy, your OBGYN will see you once every four weeks. The first time I saw Dr Manisha, which was the second month of my pregnancy, there was fetal activity and we were also asked if we wanted to do a Down Syndrome screening. This is completely voluntary, and there are two options, the first a First Trimester Screening ($370.22), which combines an ultrasound scan, a maternal blood test and the pregnant woman’s age to assess her risk of having a pregnancy affected by Down Syndrome. This is conducted between Week 11 - Week 13+6days.

The second option is the Harmony Test ($800++), which is a far more expensive procedure and recommended if the mother is older. It requires shipping vials of blood to the US for testing, and because it goes right down to the nitty gritty, it's also how people find out the baby's sex very early on.

We did the former, because while we wanted to know the odds of Down Syndrome, we didn't really mind if our first baby was a boy or a girl.

At 20 Weeks

You'll continue seeing your OBGYN every 4 weeks. You'll have a detailled scan at 20W, which is when they'll let you know the sex of the baby, if they haven't already. This is also when you'll get to see all the little parts of him in detail — super duper exciting!

At 28 Weeks

Here's the fun part (not). Your OBGYN will get you to do a Oral Glucose Tolerance Test. You have to fast without anything to eat or drink the night prior, and drink a sweet liquid. Your blood will be drawn multiple times over the course of the test, which takes several hours to determine how your body processes sugar. It is a stress test, but don't stress if you fail (like I did).

I had to do this early on, at 12W because of my very fun family history and you'll be sent to ODAC for a full day of counselling and blood tests, which will cost you over $300 (which can be claimed using Medisave). You will report early in the morning with a blood glucose monitor (which you can rent from the hospital if you don't have one, or didn't purchase one) and spend the day at ODAC. They'll feed you, have you prick your own finger and measure your blood sugar throughout the day. If your blood sugar continues to be high, you'll be prescribed insulin.

yuiyui, don’t worry so much. Doctor will let you know when it’s time to do so.

I think you can ask cos I know you can do the test on week 10.

@towkayneo does this mean unless we request specifically, they will only do blood test n scan?

@sleepingm&m I’m week 9 n next appt at week 12 but I was not told abt these tests on week 12 tho..
That is strange. Though the tests are not complusory but doctor explained to me when i saw her at week 8 and ask me to decide so that they can prepare for the tests on my next visit.

Hi Kaceey, care to share why you combine both instead of getting just the OSCAR?
How does it work for both?

Actually I only wanted Harmony test. But the lady explaining the Down syndrome test said that kkh’s protocol was to do Oscar first. Eg checking the fluid through the scan. So Oscar was kind of a must and it was my decision if I wanna do Harmony. Oscar was only 90% accurate and Harmony was I think 98%. And since Dr Tan signed me up for both the test I went ahead with both.

Did you manage to know your kid’s gender from Harmony? Hehehehe

@yuiyui same here. If it’s just blood test, I was thinking prob can just decide on the spot during 3rd scan which test to do? When’s ur next scan?

12th week plus , after i was put under pregnancy patient.

@Kaceey so before week 12 still considered IVF patient, then after that considered pregnancy patient? Did u get the goodie bag n guidebook only after week12? And do they just send you for Oscar first, no option to go straight to Harmony / Paranoma?

@yuiyui @towkayneo @sleepingm&m can I ask which test u all planning to do? Anyone else had any advise on how to decide which NIPT?

I done paranoma test at Thomson, they still need us to go through FA scan to check baby development to combined with paranoma test.

Then next scan is the 20 week detailed scan.

Btw, can I ask, if anyone have good recommendations for confinement lady? I heard best to engage early on in 2nd trim... but I’m clueless how to go about it/ what to look out for...

Hi, my doctor recommended me NIPT + NT scan if financials is not an issue. Which i agreed, but i am not sure the NIPt offered to me is harmony or pano... maybe i will asked when i see my doctor next time.

Actually i got mine thru friend’s recommendation. Basically got 2 ways. One is thru friend’s recommendation and another is thru agency.
Typically they require you to pay a deposit first. The nearer you are to your EDD, they may charge you more. Like $100-$200 more for some agency. Maybe you can try to ask around ur friend’s who had given birth and see if they got any recommendation first?

maybe i combine 1st tri screening and harmony test. Have 2nd thought maybe if 1st tri screening result is good, i will not be going for harmony.

I guess if you kept insisting they might allow you to go straight to Harmony. Cus Down syndrome test is not compulsory anyway. But Oscar consist of a blood test and a detailed scan. During the detailed scan, they will check for nuchal thickness ( I think is some fluid). Harmony test is only a blood test.

Actually in my case, both harmony and Oscar blood test came out low risk. But high risk for the detailed scan, because the nuchal thickness (neck) was on the high side. So I was scheduled for 2 further test at 15 weeks and 20 weeks to check the baby’s heart, bones and muscles. They discharged me from further scan after the 20th week scan.

OSCAR first lo..if touchwood then escalate but I hope I don't have to go through that.

Oh the nurse will actually share with you what test you are going for - they have what Plan A, Plan B and Plan C and she will elaborate what is of expected from you. So don't worry!

Congrats!

I think once you got your gynae and hospital, they will advise you on the cost and when to scan, usually around 6-7 weeks.

Hihi Rainbowdreams1011,

Remembered that we had similar cycle timeline.
How was your scan?
I got mine done at AMC, at exact week 6 :)

Yes I remember! I was about to ask you how your scan went. I didn’t get to scan at AMC because of some miscommunication. The IVF staff told me on my BT day that AMC lunch time is 12-1 pm. My appointment with Dr Tan was 1.30 pm. My AMC appointment was supposed to be at 11.30 am but I couldn’t be there because I had my daughter’s parents-teachers conference at 11.30 am. So when I reached AMC at 12.50 pm, the staff told me they were closed for lunch already and their lunch was actually 1-2 pm. So I went down to Clinic D. I saw Felicia and she said just let Dr Tan scanned for me.

So are you expecting twins since your bHCG level was quite high?

Yeah only first scan is at AMC. Then the detailed scan will be at ADC. That’s what I remember 4 years ago.

Mine is also a Singleton.

hello mommies to be!

I went for my scan last Friday and was told to go to AMC level 1 to book my OSCAR and Harmony Test. THH was suggesting that I go for Harmony since I'm of certain age. So well, I've done my Harmony Test (it's just a simple blood test requiring 3 vials of blood), so I will get to know the results in 2 weeks time.

As for the OSCAR test, I have to wait till I'm 12-13 weeks before they can do the test.

The doc in charge explained that as Harmony only deals with the blood, it's not possible to see structural defects like heart, skull, limbs etc, hence OSCAR covers that aspect. I'm given the option to do just OSCAR, but I guess I just have to heed THH's advice and cover all possibilities.

For your reference, OSCAR is approx S$300 and Harmony is approx S$800.

Good luck!

Gee, any particular reason?

The new gynae specialises in IVF pregnancies? I know some gynaes do not take in IVF pregnancies.

Actually I like THH in general. Just that I didn’t feel like doing delivery in KKH, so I switched to Dr Wendy Teo of Mt E Novena. Read that she’s quite experienced in difficult pregnancies.
Had my first appointment with her earlier today. She’s quite knowledgeable with regards to IVF pregnancies. Also she suggested Paranoma test to be done for me at next appointment in 1mths Time due to my HB’s family history of DS sibling.

Hi,
I was prescribed Ganilia too for both my pregnancies. You can just take two tablets once daily. It's not a medicine so I dun think you'll need to space out the intake. As for Duphaston, usually take for the first trimester. U can check with your gynae about it. If there's spotting, may need to consume for a longer period.

Opps, I’m given ganillia too, but was told one in the morning on an empty stomach.
If you still have supply, you can continue till you have finished it or you can bless others :)

I had spotting at week 6 and week 9. So long as the scan says baby is ok. Dnt worry too much. I am 29 weeks now.

What did your doc say?
I had random brown spotting back then and THH prescribed me progesterone inserts.
