Any 2008 MTBs staying in the East (Tanjong Rhu and Marine Parade) <IMG SRC="http://www.singaporemoth

Glad to know ur nieces and nephew go there.. at least u'll know how it is.

btw, is the playground outside of the CC/school also part of the school? I saw some broken wooden fences, i'm worried the kids may climb out if no ones looking and right outside the playground is the carpark.. so must be very careful!

hi
just chance upon this thread, do you all still meet up?

hi kimmies

how's schoolhouse so far? ur gal likes it? any crying? how did the teachers handled it? share more details lei! hehe! my son still with GUG Suntec but most of his classmates are moving to new school or next level liao, so next term not enough kids to start the class. so sad for him bcos he enjoy the class very much. so i ve to look for new school now for next yr. i read fr magazines and heard fr girlfriends, many of the schools (esp our area) are packed with long waiting lists liao! i'm afraid i too late for my son to get into any nearby good schools.. he's 2yrs and 3mths now btw.

erlen - we didn't ve a chance to arrange any meetup in this thread. but i'm also lookin for school for my son. but are u lookin for enrichment classes (usually once or twice a wk and only for a 1-2 hrs) or more like daycare schools? My son loves Growing Up gifted (GUG) at suntec (accompanied program btw), he started since beginning of this yr. mayb u can join, then we might ve enough kids to start the class again! haha!

hi cyn
have u considered zoophonics ? they have one in siglap. i'm starting my girl there next yr. twice a week in the mornings. accompanied class too. And she also attending JG twice a week.

Hi Cyn! Schoolhouse is great. I'm really glad I sent her there. Katie cried for the first 4 days, then after that, there was no looking back. She really enjoys school, and once she was sick and couldn't go to school, she cried. There was another time when I picked her up from school, she cried as well, because she want to "see my friends". So, from a social aspect, the school fulfills my expectations that she is enjoying herself socially. Academically, she's come back singing songs, and saying the occassional chinese word. I really like that the school has alternate days mandarin, because in a non-chinese speaking family like mine, she won't be able to learn much mandarin if she attends schools that holds mandarin classes 2 hours a day. She really likes her Mandarin teacher, but I think she is quite scared of the English teacher because the teacher is quite no-nonsense. Hahha..I'm very happy with that. They don't teach them the alphabet at such a young age, unlike the Montessoris, and that is something I made sure they didn't right at the start. They have a reading corner where they will read to them everyday, and that's important to me. Once I dropped Katie off at school, and she just went and sat in the reading corner and held a book up and started gabbering to herself. It was really amusing.

As to how they handle the crying. I disappear when I drop her off at school, because on the first 2 days, everytime she sees me, she will definitely cry. So, I figured out of sight, out of mind is better for her. The teachers will give her a hug and carry her. Sometimes, I will peep behind pillars and can see the teachers bringing her out of the classroom alone for a walk, to distract her from the crying. Or when the teachers have to go to the school office, they will ask her if she wants to go along with them, and she will follow them, and stop crying.

After a while, she got used to the school, and would always look forward to the school bus coming to pick her up. The first few weeks, she was actually more excited about taking the school bus than going to school. Hahaha..

She only attends Schoolhouse and no enrichment classes. I may sign her up for ballet when she reaches 4, and maybe art classes since she's loves to draw so much. But, other than that, I dont have any intention to send her anywhere else.

hi
finally some respond...guess you guys are busy
i called schoolhouse by the bay...they are full next year so no chance at all.

cyn how much is GUG? cos i am working at suntec. do they have half day?
i wan to enroll my son in those flexicare kind but is rather expensive...
right now i am under waiting list for globalkids cos my son likes the principle and the place ( looks clean and bright and airy...

just came back from kider u (changing to cherie hearts) at east gate...any advice? the place is very big and nice but is all air con...maybe that will be my 2nd option

hi catherine
do you have the contact no for zoophonic?

I think I was really SUPER lucky to get Katie a place. It was perfect timing, because I had just called them when they opened 2 more playgroup classes at the school. Maybe you can put your name on the waitlist, and call them every other week to check with them. That's what my friend did for Little Skool House, and she eventually got a place.

Kimmies - thanks for sharing! glad to know ur gal is enjoying herself so much. but i heard from another mummy (her gal joining schoolhouse next yr) that there's a parent's room at schoolhouse, its meant for parents to look at how the kids are doing in their classroom. its next to the classroom and has a glass which can only be seen from the parents room side, the kids in the other room won't be able to see through the glass. did u use that?

Cat - ya, thinking of zoo phonics since its similar to GUG. my son loves zoophonics, he can do all the A-Z actions of the zoophonics and some of the sound of the letters. but he can definitely know all the sequence of his A-Z. One of gf sending her gal to siglap zoophonics for holiday program. So i will wait for her feedback (her gal also previously with GUG same class as my son). What time in the morning for next yr (Ur gal class)? Any idea how much? btw, how much also are you paying for JG? I heard its quite ex though i heard lots of good feedback.

erlen - GUG is a 1.5 to 2hr class (depending on the level your kid is attending). There's bilingual classes as well as purely english. I think pure english is only avail on weekends. but the chinese portion is only abt 20-30min of the entire class duration. weekdays is twice per week whereas weekend is once a wk classes. Per term is S$600+ (can't remember the exact amt) each term is 2mth (ie. 16 classes) for weekdays class. my son is in toddler class (1.5 - 3 yr old) weekday (twice weekly). Babies class and weekend class are of lower term fees

Hi Cyn, you are referring to the Observatory Room. It looks into the English class for my daughter. So, I can only observe her when she is having English classes, and not Mandarin classes. That is how I found out that the English teacher is quite strict. LOL.

As for Little Skool House, I wanted to send my daughter there intially because it is near my previous office, plus my husband gets a staff rebate as he is a OCBC staff. However, there was no place and the waiting list was very long. Plus, the administrator at the school was really uncooperative. She made me wait so long, without even giving me an indication of how long I was to wait, and finally, my husband's colleague who went down to "pressure" them regularly got a place. Having said all that, if all things being equal, I.e. distance, location and price, I would choose Schoolhouse by the Bay still. Simply because the structure of the school is very open with many playgrounds. For the Little Skool House, it is in an office building, the kids go down only once a day for an hour of outdoor play, which I think is not enough at all.

thanks kimmies
i just called schoolhouse by the bay, they are gng to open new classes not sure which one yet cos the person in charge is in meeting...will call them again

by the way any kind mummies advice or comments on globalkids (located at cresent road) or academy kids (located at laguna park)?

Hi Kimmies

I went to see schoolhouse by the bay again! i went to see the observation room and i can see 4 classrooms from there, its a good thing we can see what the kids are doing during their classes and see their progress ourselves. And I like the idea that they have a gym hall for kids to run around and ve fun dancing etc rather than jus a school with classrooms. kids at this age need to run around more. the playground fence has been repaired btw (which is good news except that i notice the fence gate is open even when the kids are playing in the playground, the teachers need to be very careful in case they run out to the carpark). And yes i noticed their language split is abt 60% chinese and 40% english given that the classes are conducted 1 day english, the next day mandarin and the computer class (for age 4 above) and gym classes are both conducted in Mandarin. (actually i would ve preferred if its 60% english, 40% mandarin). Anyway the class is full for my son's age. they may be opening another class in JUN but subject to waitlist (current list is only 5, they need 15 to start the class).

Hi Cat
I enrolled my son for zoophonics for the time being (but will only start in Mar). We went for the trial for 20mins, my son loves it that he refuse to come out of the class at the end of the trial, even after we came out, he knock on the door to be let in again. he wanted to join in when they sang "we are going to the zoo" song. haha! But one thing that surprised me is that the school don't take any pre-cautionary measures against sickness and HFM. no temperature taking or checking of hands and feet. this is the only school that i know of that don't carry such practice. They told me they will only check if there's an outbreak! i was quite shock to hear that. but since my son loves the class, i decided to give it a try (mayb for a mth), jus ve to be careful.

anyone heard of "montessori for children" along mountbatten rd? I left my phone number for them to call back after many unsuccessful calls to reach the person in charge but till now nobody call back, getting the impression of "stuck-up" feeling liao!

Hi Cyn.. o, that's good news that they are opening another class. I'm not too concerned about the open fence gate. There's a security guard hired by the school and I suspect she knows all the kids.

hi mummies

finally managed to find this thread. it was pretty quiet for sometime till i lost it. was searching high & low but somehow just couldnt find it. hows everybody?

cyn
i always pass by montessori for children & i wanted to put my elder gal there but they only accept kids who are toilet trained. so didnt bother to call or visit them coz my gal wasnt toilet train then.

Hi mummies,
just chanced upon this thread as I stay in the East too, near Katong shopping Centre. My son is going to Cherie Hearts @ Eastgate, next to Roxy Square. Place is very new and has a gym too which my son loves. As they are very new, there are still vacancies in case mummies here are trying to find a place for your kids.

mamijoan
yes i heard abt this new CH @ eastgate. but there's no outdoor playground rite? actually i'm waiting for another new CH to open at mountbatten next mth.

is CH good? or is it more like a childcare than pre-school?

btw, tmr I'm going to visit MFC to understand more abt the school. AT LAST!!

Hi ladies

Forgot to update my visit to MFC.

The person attended to me was very professional. She took me round the school to see the classes in action. I saw the kids were playing with some "toys" (which are of educational value eg. puzzle of world atlas, stacking blocks etc) individually on the floor. Some did together as a group, some as a pair, some individually. Some were doing writing, some doing art & craft. Almost everyone was doing something different. The school sys is learn through playing. they are allowed to play with whatever "toys" they like. They are not instructed by teachers, they are guided instead so allow freedom to them to explore on their own. Its like they learn unconsciously through playing. last time when my niece and nephew went to that school, everyday i ask them what did they learn today, they said "nothing, just play" but when I ask them on the words and science taught in school (looking at their worksheets), they are able to answer and explain.

The kids are not "controlled" in a way like a normal school classrooms. But some say they may have problems later in adapting to normal classrooms when they go to Primary 1. My nephew had that for a while, he couldn't sit down obediently in school like his other classmates in P1 but eventually got over it.

Each class is of mixed ages (from 2.5yrs old to 6yrs old). THey believe kids learn from each other from different ages and also each kid learn at different pace, some faster some slower, so they mix the students together despite their age difference. THey also believe the older children will learn to help and teach/guide the younger ones (which i see it as values learnt on respect, sharing which is good for kids with sibling like a big bro). Teacher to students ratio is abt 1:12 or 14. But there's a CHinese teacher who goes around the different classroom to teach the children individually or as a group. (I can say not much focus on Mandarin).

They also do singing in the morning, sometimes outdoor playing, etc.

Unfortunately, They require kids to be toilet-trained (at least 80-90%) so he has to wait but by next intake (Aug-Sept), he will be 3 which is also the time his didi is here, I worry he may think I don't want him by dumping him in school alone

cyn

thanks for your comments on MFC. hows their fees? the school is fully aircon i suppose, coz every time i pass by, the windows are all closed. i guess all montessori approach is the same, means kids are encouraged to explore/ play with whatever toys they like at their own pace. my gal was attending a montessori school previously before i withdraw her due to health reasons.

so u decided to put your boy there? dont worry, kids adapt pretty easily.

Their fees are abt 3k per term (of 4 mths i think), 3 terms for entire yr. School fully aircon.

I haven't decide bcos he isn't toilet trained yet. so still looking.
