In the midst of a global pandemic, it’s apt that Singapore is planning rather muted National Day 2020 celebrations this year. Yet celebrate we must! We’re not quite clear of the dreaded COVID-19, and the recent elections may have revealed some chinks in our armour. But witnessing Singaporeans from all walks of life conscientiously wearing masks and social distancing while trooping to the polls to do their duty is a great reminder that at the end of the day, we are #SGunited. And that in itself is a triumph worth a firework or two.
So c’mon, let’s start gearing up to that yearly occasion when Singaporeans young and old sing, “This is home, truly, where I know I must be,” — loud and proud as one. Here are some celebratory ideas to get your SG55 party started.
National Day 2020 Happenings
Welcome NDP2020 Home
As you’ve probably heard, there’s no need to head to the city for NDP2020 — this year, it’s coming to you. Gather the fam — togged out in reds and whites — in front of the TV or an online livestream. Sing “Majulah Singapura” as the flag is raised at the Padang during the Parade. Take part in a tribute to front-line workers and join the Light Up with items in the Singapore Together Pack. You might even spot traditional NDP favourites such as aerial displays and Red Lions flying past your window! There’s lots to look forward to — yes, fireworks too — ‘cause it’s time to give #OurHeartForSG.
Share The Care with Families For Life
In the lead up to National Day, Families for Life (FFL) is calling out to families to Share The Care in support of President’s Challenge 2020. First of all, change your Facebook and/or Instagram profile pic to the special red Share The Care button badge. From today to 31 August, POSB will donate up to $50,000 for your show of solidarity and community spirit!
Here are other ways to support the cause:
- Make a direct donation to President’s Challenge through FFL Share The Care via Giving.sg. Donors receive a specially curated e-recipe book, featuring “Red and White” recipes from President Halimah Yacob, local celeb Fann Wong, and bakeries such as Tarte by Cheryl Koh and Divine Artisan.
- From today, you can purchase a special agar-agar kit ($10) from any Phoon Huat/Redman store. Each kit includes our President’s National Day agar-agar recipe and $4 from every purchase goes to President’s Challenge. Buy more, make more, and #FFLShareTheCare with neighbours, friends, and family!
- Purchase any “Red and White” National Day-themed cookies and cakes from participating partners. A portion of the proceeds from every purchase will be donated to President’s Challenge.
And it doesn’t end there. On National Day itself, join #FriendsofFFLShare volunteers on Facebook for a series of fun craft- and sing-alongs. It’s all happening from 10am to 5.30pm, so see you and your family there!
Help Create Sentosa’s Flag of Unity
Sentosa Development Corporation is inviting Singaporeans and friends of the nation to be part of a massive Flag of Unity. To span 4,500 sqm across Siloso Beach, it will feature 10,000 red and white flags spelling out the NDP2020 theme, “Together, A Stronger Singapore”. To be upcycled into usable items after the event, each flag will carry one heartfelt message. And that’s where you come in. From now till 8 August, submit your hopes and wishes for Singapore at www.sentosa.com.sg/ndp2020. Every 20th submission will also receive a pair of wireless earbuds worth $20!
Join the 14th National Day Sing-along
On the eve of National Day, sing your hearts out at the 14th National Day Sing-along. Gracing this first online edition is special guest President Halimah Yacob. Look forward to a spirited sing-along led by homegrown singers Abby Lai and 阿Win, as they belt out familiar local tunes such as Home, The Stream That Flows Forever (细水长流), and Voices From My Heart (小人物的心声). Local deejays Phua Kia Peow and Bukoh Mary will also be hosting a series of interactive games. Join the livestream from 7.38pm to 9pm on the SCCC Facebook page, SFCCA Facebook page and Capital 958FM Facebook page.
Discover Majulah! Museums
As National Day approaches, find out how our museums and heritage institutions play a key role in anchoring our nation’s history, even while opening ways to think about our future. Gather the kids and check out Majulah! Museums on the I Love Museums Facebook page from 1 to 9 August. Also look out for the NDP Fun Pack giveaway as the Museum Roundtable celebrates our nation’s birthday.
Feel the Majulah Spirit with Asian Civilisations Museum
Rediscover our rich cross-cultural art and heritage with ACM this August. Online-accessible highlights include National Day classics with the Lorong Boys, live pre-registered portrait illustration, and a National Day-themed self-guided trail. The kids will enjoy educational online fun, from puzzles and quizzes to an upcycling craft activity. You can also explore the museum’s newest permanent galleries digitally, even via your VR headsets.
Celebrate through Art with National Gallery Singapore
To commemorate Singapore’s 55th and our spirit of resilience in a challenging year, the façade of National Gallery Singapore will be illuminated in red and white nightly from 24 July to 30 August. 60 artworks will also be projected in rotation on the central veiled canopy facing the Padang. This is in support of local production houses, artists and cultural workers whose work has been affected this year. Also enjoy free admission to all exhibitions in August! Singaporeans and PRs can also redeem a free one-year Gallery Insider membership (worth up to $120).
If you’d rather stay home, participate in exciting National Day activities online. Experience live performances by artists, poets, musicians, and art therapists. Join a self-guided therapeutic art programme, or docent-led tours. And don’t miss City Hall: If Walls Could Talk (Digital Edition), accessible via the Gallery’s website from 9 August.
Online and Onsite Fun with National Museum of Singapore
Every night throughout August, the iconic façade of the National Museum of Singapore also comes alight. Complement your visit with an exploration of the galleries with The Hunt@NMS. Discover clues, solve puzzles, accomplish tasks, and complete your journey with a special souvenir. Afterwards, remember to add your hopes and wishes for Singapore to the museum’s LED wall. While you’re there, tuck into a special National Day 3-course meal ($22) at Food for Thought.
There’s plenty more for families staying home too. On 3 August, journey with nine-year-old Nadine and her grandfather through the At Home, Truly digital experience, as they experience Singapore’s evolution from its beginnings as a nation to today. Join story-telling and game sessions for kids on 8 and 9 August. Other online happenings include talks, workshops, live music performances, in-gallery theatre performance, and a showcase of local short films.
In the meantime, NMS invites kids up to 13 years to take part in a National Day colouring competition. Watch this video to find out how to take part. Submissions close on 11.59pm on 1 August 2020.
