:: Giveaway :: Fantastic Family Fun at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa

Set on idyllic Siloso Beach, Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa is a perennial favourite with families and kids on staycation. We got a first-hand experience of its Family Fun Package and found out why.

Did you know that Singapore has only ONE beachfront resort in the whole country? And the honour goes to Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa! We had the pleasure of experiencing its famed hospitality when the resort invited us to review its Family Fun Package. There was so much fun packed in that it made us wish we had kids to bring along!

Check into Utter Relaxation

Rasa Sentosa - lobby view

Walking into the lobby felt like we’d been whisked away into paradise. Well, it’s the Shangri-La, after all. As it turns out, we’re not the only ones to feel this way – friends who’ve had staycays there before say the same thing! The tropical resort feel is real, and coupled with genuinely friendly reception staff, first impressions left us with high expectations for the rest of the stay.

Rasa Sentosa - deluxe pool view

We had a Deluxe Pool View room on the fifth floor, which is also the lobby level. The first thing that caught our eyes when we stepped in was the sunshine streaming in. So we scooted past the plush-looking king-size bed and a twin set of sofa beds to the balcony. As the room title suggests, it overlooks the swimming pools below, but there is nothing quite like also having the ocean – the South China Sea, to be exact – for a view. Seamless – and free – broadband internet access meant it was time to start posting IG stories!

The bathroom is well-appointed for a family with kids. It’s even got an Ikea step stool, so the littler ones can reach to brush their teeth. All the usual toiletries are covered, plus slippers and bathrobes in the wardrobe too. A separate shower cubicle and bathtub means getting the whole family clean won’t take too long. And the bottles of shower gel also deliver a lovely foamy bubble bath which the kids will surely love.

Decadent Dining at Silver Shell Cafe

The Family Fun Package includes daily buffet breakfast at Silver Shell Cafe for up to two adults and two children. And there’s plenty to love. Start at the ubiquitous live egg station, or head to the Indian chef whipping up fresh appam. Other local breakfast favourites include nasi lemak, roti prata, laksa and fishball noodles. There’s also a wide range of pastries, cheeses, yoghurt and cereals, as well as a carving station with honey baked ham.

Rasa Sentosa - kids buffet

Perhaps the most important section is its Kids Zone. The height of the counters lets even preschoolers help themselves like ‘big people’ do. A good spread of yummy dishes from pancakes to pasta, plus fruit, drinks and desserts will whet little appetites. Psst! Fans of the Milo truck – not just kids – should try the iced Milo from the dispenser here! During lunch and dinner, there’s even a dedicated Baby Zone offering jars of baby food, baby dining utensils, hot water and even a milk bottle steriliser.

And it doesn’t stop at breakfast. Silver Shell Cafe also treats your family to a complimentary buffet dinner when you book the Family Fun Package. The huge international spread features six live cooking stations, a carving station and fresh seafood corner. Each night of the week features a differently themed buffet, from local delights to Mediterranean, Indian, Italian and more. Seafood-lovers, plan your stay to include a Friday and prepare to come away stuffed!

Rasa Sentosa - trapizza

Alongside Silver Shell Cafe are Casserole and 8 Noodles, two other restaurants at Dine on 3, the destination-dining concept on level three. But I highly recommend families traipse over to Trapizza (above), the newly revamped beach-front Italian diner. While your wood-fired pizzas are being prepared in the open-concept kitchen, the kids can entertain themselves at the water play area, colouring corner and play zone with a kitchenette playset.

Cool Zone Dedicated to the Kiddos

Rasa Sentosa - toots clubImage: Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa, Singapore

As part of the Family Fun Package, kids aged five to 12 years enjoy a full-day at the Toots Club. And this awesome kids club not only includes having fully supervised fun indoors. The minders also organise special outdoor activities around the resort grounds for a more well-rounded experience. They can even learn about herbs and pot their own pet plants at the plant nursery. During our stay, we saw groups of Toots Club kids having fun playing captain’s ball and water polo!

Rasa Sentosa - art room

Even if the weather isn’t fine, there’s plenty to keep the kids busy, beginning with the indoor playground with its signature treehouse slide that spirals from the third floor down to a padded ball pit on level one. At least eight activities are organised each day, such as musical games, scavenger hunts, mini putting, and art and craft. If Mums and Dads would like to have a romantic candlelit dinner, that’s fine too, because children registered with the Toots Club full-day programme even get complimentary lunch and dinner!

Rasa Sentosa - kids toilet

Those below the age of five will love the Mini Toots Club. It’s a jungle gym specially designed for babies and toddlers. There are age-appropriate books, toys and movies, plus a kid-size toilet too! Do note that little ones have to be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. Older kids will find more excitement at Fun Zone. It’s packed with an Xbox One and arcade game machines such as race car simulators and air hockey. Or have a family challenge of foosball or table tennis on the tables right outside.

Love for Mums and Dads Too

With the kiddos taken care of, it’s time for the grown-ups to get some ‘me time’ or ‘us time’. Consider hitting the gym that boasts a wide range of equipment, as well as towels and cold bottled water 24/7. Afterwards, another Family Fun Package perk will come in handy – 15 per cent discount on a la carte treatments at CHI, The Spa. We didn’t take advantage of this, but we hear that the luxurious spa has a couple suite offering superb top-to-toe treatments designed for two.

Rasa Sentosa - love seatsSource

Or what about a stroll around the lush landscaped grounds and along the beach? They even have a series of love seats facing the water, perfect for a romantic tête-à-tête. We also spent a fair amount of time soaking in the outdoor Jacuzzis. Palm trees shelter the adult-only section of the extensive free-form swimming pools, making a little patch of heaven right there.

Splish, Splash, We Were Having a Blast!

Remember to pack swimsuits for everyone. There are enough water slides and splash pads to keep the kids occupied for hours. There’s a canopy over the dedicated children’s pool so a little drizzle or too much sun won’t matter. Life jackets are available for kids – and adults – who can’t swim. And the water is specially treated to be gentle to eyes, skin and hair – they really thought of everything! When everyone’s all prune-y, pop over to the outdoor playground and giant chess board for more (dry) fun.

Rasa Sentosa - pedal boatImage: Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa, Singapore

Or slap on more sunblock and head out to sea! One of my favourite perks of the Family Fun Package is the free daily hour of non-motorised water sports activities. We got a two-person kayak from the friendly guys at the Sea Sports Centre and paddled around the lagoon. Some families had fun on pedal boats, while others tried their feet at stand-up paddling. It’s really nice because this stretch of Siloso Beach feels like a private beach just for hotel guests.

Extra Perks for Extra Excursions

Of course, there’s more to explore on Sentosa beyond the boundaries of the resort. Some extra perks from the Family Fun Package will get you started. If the hour of water sports only serves to whet your appetite for more, you’re in luck. Head to Ola Beach Club further down Siloso Beach and enjoy a 30 per cent discount on water sports activities.

Rasa Sentosa - skybridge view

You and the family also get a complimentary walk on the new AJ Hackett Sentosa Skybridge. It’s not terribly exciting unless heights get your heart racing. Still, it’s worth checking out the bird’s eye view over the island and all the way to neighbouring Indonesian islands. We actually preferred exploring the 11-storey-high Fort Siloso Skywalk that’s just up the hill past the resort entrance. It’s free to enter and a great opportunity to introduce the kids to this slice of Singaporean history.

Lastly, you will receive complimentary entry to Sentosa Island and Sentosa Express tickets, should you need them. We didn’t, simply because there was so much fun to be had in and around the resort itself that we didn’t want to leave!
