The New LEGO Movie 4D at LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort!

Last Friday, I was part of a small group of members of the Singaporean media who were treated to the launch of “The LEGO Movie 4D: A New Adventure” at the LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort. Do the names Emmet, Wyldstyle, Unikitty, Metalbeard and Benny ring a bell?

Yes – they were the stars of “The LEGO Movie” which graced cinemas worldwide back in 2014. In “The LEGO Movie 4D”, fans can look forward to discovering what happened after the blockbuster movie. (watch the trailer!) The characters are seen reuniting at the invitation of a rather shady new character by the name of Risky Business. He plans to open a new theme park which bears an uncanny resemblance to – you guessed it – LEGOLAND.

The inner child in me was squealing in delight when, prior to the official debut of the short film, hundreds of balloons in shades of red, blue, green, and yellow, rained upon the seated audience! Judging from the “oohs and aahs”, the completely unexpected move had thoroughly delighted the members of the audience, regardless of age. (you can never go wrong with balloons!) Following that surprise, I put on my pair of 3D glasses and enjoyed the action-packed 4D short film which lasted about fifteen minutes.

Needless to say, 3D films promise an exciting experience for moviegoers since everything on screen is able to “pop out” at you. What’s a 4D movie then? Throw in physical effects such as rain, wind, strobe lights and vibration, and you have got yourself a 4D movie that’s sure to enthral audiences – especially the little ones! I personally loved the scenes during which the audience was showered with tiny droplets of water that mimicked rain! The other effects like wind and fog also brought the action out of the screen and into the audience.

At one point of the plot, Emmet and Wyldstyle found themselves having to build a machine to defeat the evil Risky Business. Interaction with the audience featured here. Kids were more than delighted to assist Emmet and Wyldstyle by pointing to the various 3D building blocks required by them which hovered on screen. Once again, I found myself having to suppress my inner child and let the real kids do the assisting.

Returning to voice their iconic characters are actors Nick Offerman (Metalbeard), Charlie Day (Benny), Elizabeth Banks (Wyldstyle) and Alison Brie (Unikitty). Comedian, writer and actor, Patton Oswalt voices the villain Risky Business, whose Evil Secret Plot demands the heroes to call on the Master Builder skills of a surprise ally to save the day. The 4D short film which serves as a link between “The LEGO Movie” and “The LEGO Movie Sequel” (yes, there’s one!) will play several times a day at LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort’s LEGO Studio, located at the Imagination area.

LEGO fans, rejoice! There are three upcoming feature films! The currently untitled LEGO Batman movie will release in cinemas worldwide on February 10, 2017 while the LEGO Ninjago movie will be out on September 22, 2017. The LEGO Movie Sequel will only grace screens in May 2018 – but I believe it will be worth the wait!
