28 Things to Do This June School Holidays (2015)

They say “You will never be like the ‘Little Engine That Could’ if you sit around on your caboose.” This holiday, get the kids off their cute cabooses to master a new skill, explore a new interest, or learn a new hobby. Who knows, your shy and soft-spoken child could end up commanding the stage, while the rambunctious one develops patience to garden. There’s an activity out there for every kind of child. Enjoy!

1. Go To the Farm

Kick off the annual mid-year break with a baa and a cock-a-doodle-doo. The Kranji Countryside Farmers’ Market sells locally grown and handcrafted produce and artisanal food, with live music, animal corner and community workshops. There are 50 stalls to browse around so come early! Stalls close at 7 pm.

2. Bond with the Grands

A Lighter Side of History: Joint Picture Joint Hearts is a special programme under the National Museum of Singapore’s Children’s Season (Masak Masak) calendar. It aims to facilitate bonding and encourage love and respect between parent or grandparent and child through an art session guided by experienced art therapists.

3. Celebrate Princess Lolly’s Birthday

It’s Princess Lolly’s 89th birthday, come celebrate with her! Inspired by best-selling book The Jelly Who Wouldn’t Wobble by Angela Mitchell, this drop-off workshop by ACT 3 International will see children between 4 and 8 years old fully immersed in artistic experiences. Parents are welcome to stay for the first 20 minutes of this two-hour session. Children, come dressed comfortably and be ready to express yourselves!

4. Express Yourself through Words

ACT 3 Theatrics believes in “literacy through drama”, helping children to develop an ability to use English expressively and creatively, and teaching them to think, speak, write and act confidently with clarity. The school’s two holiday programmes are designed for different age groups: The Creative Chief Series (CCS) is for 5 to 8 year olds, and the Writing Master Series (WMS) is for 9 to 12 year olds. Both are conducted by renowned children’s theatre pioneer and author R. Chandran together with educator and actress Amy Cheng.

5. Wake the Leader in You

Somewhere within your child is a potential leader lurking and waiting to emerge. Given the chance and the right coaching, your child may find his voice and be a future leader. During this three-day camp, your child will go on a multi-sensorial journey and learn social communication skills through expressive art, and public speaking. Children are grouped according to age: 5 to 6 (Group A) and 7 to 9 years old (Group B).

6. Make a Mailbox

Sending and receiving letters through the mail is very exciting. But have you ever wondered what postboxes look like in different countries? Children aged 7 to 12 years will learn interesting facts about postboxes and how mail is delivered. Children will also get to paint and decorate a tin mailbox to bring home.

7. Learn the Ropes of Performing Arts

In a ‘Journey to Space’ children will devise a plot, cast a play, design costumes, create a set, learn about lights, and act. This week-long Drama Camp by Buds Theatre is suitable for children aged 6 to 13 years. Through theatre processes such as improvisation techniques, participants will gain personal awareness as well as a broadened knowledge of theatre. Older kids? 9. Mine.Craft.Invent

Creeper alert! WondersWork, which has regular camps and workshops on Lego Robotics, is holding a two day camp for children to come up with Minecraft-themed inventions using different kinds of raw materials. There will be one teacher to every four children to ensure that each child gets enough help and attention. Suitable for boys and girls aged 7 to 12 years. Best of all, kids will get to bring their inventions home!

10. Compose a Song

Is Junior always making up his own tunes to perform for all and sundry? Let him take it to the nation with Melody of Hope, songwriting contest organised by the Singapore Kindness Movement. Just compose and record a song with the theme “a nation of kindness starts with one”, submit it and get friends and family to vote for it. The Top 15 finalists get to perform on 19 September and three winners will win $1,000 each. Sweet! Open to budding songwriters and musicians aged 7 to 26 years.

11. Be a Lil’ Star

SAFRA’s annual talent time contest is coming again and if your little one is bursting with talent, hurry up and register by 22 May! Children aged between 3 and 12 years can take part, either by themselves or together with friends and family members. There are lots of prizes to win! Rope in the grandparents too, kids with a grandparent in their group will get an additional gift.

The Deep

12. Explore The Deep

Only 10 per cent of the seafloor has been mapped so far. Discover what lurks beneath the oceans and marvel at the breathtaking specimens of over 40 rare deep-sea creatures, which will be exhibited for the first time in Southeast Asia. These are accompanied by 67 images of sea fauna and bioluminescent creatures, all of which, put toegther, remind us that we belong to a vast, living chain that is incredibly beautiful yet fragile.

13. Create Art in the Gardens

This is a drama, craft and planting workshop where children from 5 to 12 years can learn about the beauty of nature and be inspired to express their creativity through writing, songs, and the performing arts. They will also learn to appreciate the role that nature plays in our lives. Registration closes 30 May, or when all spaces are filled.

14. Get Artsy Crafty at the Museum

In conjunction with the on-going exhibition Imaginarium: A Voyage of Big Ideas, children from 7 years and above can get crafty at the museum as they imagine a future in different forms and colours through two art workshops by Let’s Make!: Weaving, and Felt Collage. Participants will need to use needles at both workshops so do ensure that your child can do this safely.

15. Learn and Enjoy Mandarin

Chengzhu Mandarin Centre has themed week-long Mandarin camps for various age groups each holiday, from six months of age all the way to Primary three pupils. We like the unique opportunities these camps offer. This June, older ones from 7 to 9 years get to go into a recording studio to dub a cartoon show! 16. Travel Around the World

Big Fun Kitchen and My Art Studio are going to embark on a culinary and art tour around the world and you are invited to come along! Children from 6 to 16 years old will learn about food and art culture in Singapore, England, Turkey or Mexico during their full-day workshops, dine on their own culinary creations, and bring their masterpieces home. 17. Be A Superhero

DODT, the hip people who are helping to revitalise the old-school art of silkscreen printing in Singapore, are doing something special for the little ones this June: a Superhero Summer Day Camp for kids where the young ones can learn kickboxing and pick up some self-defence skills (in good fun of course), learn silkscreen printing and get to print on their own tee shirts to take home. Lunch is provided.

19. Make Costumes

An initiative by StartWell, Superhero Me is a values-based craft project that imparts ethics and life skills. During this school holidays, The Superhero Me Festival will be coaxing your child’s inner hero to come out through crafting, storytelling and imaginative play. What is love? It takes skill to make food look and taste good. Let your budding chef learn how to make a kirei bento set at the Tokyo Sushi Academy. This is a tour and planting workshop guided by Sara, who with her siblings and friends, is visiting the Supermarket Garden. 26. Toy with Gravity

Newton’s Acrobats? What’s that? It’s a new workshop at the Singapore Science Centre where children will make use of recycled materials to find out about how things tumble, wobble, rock and roll, and invent their own Newton’s Acrobatic team. 27. Find the Fun Side of Arts

As part of Esplanade’s celebration of Singapore’s golden jubilee, Flipside will showcase local and international artists in a variety of whimsical and unconventional performances for all ages. There will also be free performances at the Concourse on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

28. Have a Family Picnic

The Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) has been holding monthly Family For Life (FFL) picnics on the last Saturday of the month. Why not join in the fun this June? You can take a family portrait at a mobile café, make and fly kites, do some DIY activities, catch a movie screening, and maybe even bring home a prize.
