The day we took the New 7-Seater Nissan Elgrand on a Spin
If you’re in the market for a family car, may we suggest taking a look at the new seven-seated luxury variant Nissan Elgrand? We were offered the opportunity to take this vehicle out on a spin lately and yes, we were impressed.

Verdict from the Backseat
The kids loved it. There were plenty of room for them to move around inside. Their favourite? The sun roof, through which they could stick their heads out to enjoy the balmy weather and warm sunlight. Parents, rest assured that full control of the Nissan Elgrand’s two sun roofs lie in the driver’s hands. Rear passengers are not able to open the sun roof completely; they are only able to lift it slightly.
The adults appreciated the spacious interiors at the rear. With two seats in the second row and three at the third, there was generous leg and head room, allowing bigger humans to ease in and out of the passenger area and from row to row without having to do a crouch and crawl manoeuvre.
A lower car floor made it easy for the young ‘uns and the older folk to get in and out as well. And if you are ferrying such passengers, rest assured that there is ample space at the back for accompanying paraphernalia. Fold down the third row seats and you have enough room to fit a wheelchair and a stroller, both folded.
A 10-inch drop-down screen will provide ample entertainment and keep little ones occupied during long road trips.
From the Driver’s Seat
Driver control was manifest from the beginning. We found the one-touch auto sliding door easy to control via dashboard; similarly, the touch screen audio system with an in-built reverse camera function.
The Elgrand also boasts Nissan’s Advanced Driving-Assist Display (ADAD), which was first introduced in the Nissan Teana in late 2013. This customisable system is cleverly tilted with 3D-depth to allow drivers to view drive information without losing focus on the road.
We appreciated the clear dashboard displays which told us, in text and with an alarm, when special attention was required, for instance, when we started to move the car without fully releasing the brake. There was no warning or alarm if the front passenger did not put on his seat belt though (or did we miss it?). As we had kids with us, we were also glad to have a host of safety features such as the eight SRS airbags, Vehicle Dynamic Control, Electronic Brake-force control, and an Anti-lock Braking System.
The car’s quiet engines made for a sleek driving experience. In fact, the pick-up was so smooth, we found ourselves crusing along at 100 kmh without even realising it!
Despite the Elgrand’s size, parking was a breeze, thanks to its sizable side mirrors. The additional built in blind-spot mirror on the right rear mirror came in useful when we had to parallel park.
The Overall Look
In terms of design, the Elgrand impresses with a new dynamic exterior that oozes luxury, from the bolder front grille to its signature LED headlamps with Active Adaptive Front-Lighting System and a shiny chrome finish. All the boys — young and old — liked the new multi spoke design 18- inch alloy wheels as well.
Inside is a haven of luxurious comfort, with diamond-shape quilted patterned seats in black leather. Driver and passenger comfort is prime, with electronically-powered seats that can be adjusted (eight ways for the driver’s seat, six for the front passenger), and memory function seats for both. This new seven-seater luxury variant also features new captain seats with an ottoman in the second row so yes, if you’re not driving at the moment, you can sit back, put your feet up, and enjoy the ride — just like we did!
