DIY: Crafting with Tapes (plus a Giveaway!)

There was a time when crafting with children required precision planning and meticulous military-grade preparation. There’d be newspapers spread out to protect floors from stains, scratches, paint, and sticky black adhesive residue. Vast bundles of kitchen towels, boxes of tissue paper, and rags on the standby to mop up spills from the thrills. And you, the mum, anxiously hovering to ensure that what messes stayed within the boundaries of no man’s land.

Thanks to 3M Scotch® Expressions Tapes, craft can now be created on an entirely stress-free, mess-free level. All you need are tapes, scissors, and imagination – to start with – and the world is your canvas.

We’ve had a wooden kids chair and table set from Ikea for almost a decade. While the set still stands firm, the wood that it is made of has darkened with age. It’s also been ‘re-designed’ through overly enthusiastic toddler painting sessions, stained by experiments in food colouring, and other kid-related stay-at-home-mum activities. So when 3M sent us a starter kit of Expressions tapes, we decided to give the set an overhaul.

The kids spent about an hour laying down tapes on their chairs, and personalising each with an initial. They loved the colourful designs on the tapes. The more colours, the better. In fact, they used every single colour on their chairs at first, resulting in seats that looked, to be honest, rather awful.

Thank goodness, the 3M Scotch® Expressions Tapes are forgiving. While they adhere securely to surfaces, they can also be easily removed without leaving any residue. So we could simply strip them off, and place them on again in more aesthetically pleasing formations.

What else did we love? The fact that these tapes come in a paper finish and can be easily torn off the roll. That they can be written on using a normal pen or a marker. That they come in the most amazing patterns and colours. That all three different types of tapes – the Magic Tapes, the Washi Tapes, and the Masking Tapes – complement each other so you can use them all together.

The kids are pretty chuffed with their new ‘designer’ chairs and raring to get tape on everything else in the house.

Are you inspired yet? If you need ideas, 3M’s craft website My Activity Room has excellent ones. There are also loads of ideas online. I like these that you can do with your children:

1. Washi tape wall frames
2. Tape art for toddlers
3. Washi tape car track
4. Washi tape wall mural
