All About Allergies: free seminars on 2 Oct 2011

Allergies are an increasingly important issue for many Singaporean families: 20% of children in Singapore suffer from asthma (SingHealth), 5% of children have food allergies (National University Hospital), and 10% of children in Singapore suffer from eczema (NUH).

Getting a handle on these allergic conditions is critical. Allergies cannot be ‘cured’ but they can be controlled. Parents can do a lot to mitigate the scale and scope of reactions — if they know what to expect.

Want to learn more about how you can cope with your child’s food allergies, get tips from a dermatologist and a psychologist on how to control eczema — and learn why active living is the asthma sufferer’s best weapon
against the disease?

Food allergy seminar

• Dr Liew Woei Kang, a paediatric allergist and immunologist at the SBCC Baby and Child Clinic, will talk about how to test for food allergies, and how and why food allergies in Singapore are on the rise.
• Sneezywheezy.com editors Vicky Henniker Andaraj and Cris Sivashanmugam will offer their perspectives on what it’s like to eat out, travel, shop and cook for children with food allergies.

Eczema seminar
• “Itchy Scratchy Eczema: All that you’re itching to know” — by Dr Chan Yuin Chew, a consulting dermatologist at Dermatology Associates at Gleneagles.
• “Mind Versus Itch” — by Frances Yeo, principal psychologist from Thomson Pediatric Centre. This will focus on the emotional problems faced by eczema patients, and how behavioral therapy can help reduce the skin damage caused by this condition.

the disease with medications and by modifying their work and home environment.
