20 Creative March School Holiday (2016) Activities for Children in Singapore

1. Enjoy Classical Music

Award-winning violinist Ms. Tee Khoon Tang holds regular concerts for children. This time, she has two ‘’Beethoven Last Years’’ concerts designed for different age groups, featuring principal cellist of Philharmonic Orchestra Hamburg, Olivia Jeremias, leader of prestigious Kammerakademie Potsdam Berlin, and Yuki Kasai, violist of the American award-winning Daedalus Quartet, Jessica Thompson. Children can get up close and personal to learn about the instruments and see how beautiful music is made with them!

2. Be a Young Naturalist

This NParks camp is perfect for young ones who are interested in learning more about Singapore’s wetlands, and nature conservation. The one-day camp includes indoor and outdoor learning, and is uitable for children aged 7 to 12 years. Each participant gets a naturalist passport and upon completion of a worksheet, nature walk or hands-on activity, will earn a stamp in it.

3. Have Fun at Kids Fiesta

This annual event by MediaCorp will feature Singapore’s first outdoor ice-skating rink and over 30 activities for children. There will be meet-and-greet opportunities with children’s favorite cartoon characters, music and dance performances, laser maze, electric scooter park, etc. The Fun Pass for children aged between 3 and 12 years can be purchased online.

4. Be a Tooth Warrior

The National Dental Centre is holding a Dental Boot Camp, a sequel to their ‘Be a Dentist for a Day’ programme last year. Suitable for younger children, the highlights include a lesson on proper brushing of teeth, learning to defend teeth from acid attacks and sugar bugs, and games. Each child will get a free dental screening (and cleaning during a subsequent appointment), free entry to the HealthZone play area, and goodie bags.

5. Explore The Big Kids World Workshop

Have you been to the new megastore in Jurong East? There will be a big educational playground there this March holiday, involving 60 schools and featuring programmes suitable for children from two years of age, activity booths, stage performances, and more. Your child can try out a wide variety of activities from art, music, dance, to Taekwondo, rock climbing, and soccer. Register online for a chance to win a goodie bag.

6. Take Speed-Frozen Photographs

Together with artist Richard Kearns, children will discover what happens when they take a photograph with a slow shutter speed on camera. This workshop at Playeum includes an introduction to the rules of photography, and explores the possibilities that come in breaking those rules. Suitable for children aged 6 to 12, with their parents. Do note that a camera or a camera-enabled device is required.

7. Grow More Confident

Have you checked out Oliver Jeffers’ picture books? No? Well your children should. ACT3 International is organising inspirational workshops for 2-year-olds (parent-accompanied), 2 to 4 year olds, and 5 to 7 year olds, all based on his funny and imaginative works. The one for the youngest age group is a single session workshop, while the others are four or five sessions long, with a presentation to wrap it all up. Older children from 8 to 10 years can sign up to learn how to communicate effectively through persuasive speaking.

8. Try Some Swordplay

Children who are thinking of picking up fencing can find out if this is the sport for them during this school holiday fencing appreciation workshop at Z Fencing. Children from 4 to 6 years old can go on a one-day preparatory workshop, while children from 7 to 13 years can attend the 3-day fencing experience workshop.

9. Tech In Motion Technology

Imagin8ors and Playeum are presenting a four-day camp where children can tinker with technology and combine this with creative materials to build things that move! Children will have unlimited access to all of Playeum’s interactive spaces, take full advantage of the Art of Speed installations, further explore speed with robotics, and collaborate for a final team challenge. Suitable for 6 to 10 year olds.

10. Learn to Sew

Beginners – at least 6 years old – can pick up this essential life skill by learning to sew an Animal Softie or a Peasant Blouse. Children who have completed at least one beginner’s class can create a Kids Bratpack or a No Sweat Water Bottle Holder. Your child can also opt for the Kids Love Sewing Series throughout March, designed for children aged 9 years and above. In this series of four sessions, they’ll create a book cover, a drawstring backpack, and progress to a blouse and skirt, or shorts.

11. Scratching and Fidgeting

This is a new camp by Saturday Kids, where children can learn beginner’s Scratch programming for two hours and then proceed to play at Fidgets indoor playground for the rest of the day. Suitable for children aged 7 to 10 years, with no prior experience in programming needed. Students will practice animating the characters and learn to record, edit and add sounds to their projects.

12. Get Into Music and Art

Learn about instruments at Cristofori Music School’s Muzic Bug Camp for children between 4 and 7 years of age. There are two sessions to choose from. Each introduces your child to 10 muzic bugs and their instruments. This hands-on session on the instruments will give your child wide exposure to a variety of instruments, from the banjo to the bagpipe to the harp. Children who prefer to learn more about art go Around the World with Mona Lisa instead.

13. Investigate Wildlife

We often come across donation boxes at the malls bearing the likeness of pangolins. But what are they? Your child may be interested to know that pangolins are scaly anteaters found in Singapore! This workshop will teach the children about the habitat and habits of these rare mammals and how we can help protect them. Participants will also take a walk around the Gardens to look for burrows where pangolins may live.

14. Picnic with Showtime in the Gardens

Concert and brass bands from a host of local schools – St. Patrick’s School, St. Stephen’s School, St. Anthony’s Primary School, St. Joseph’s Institution Junior, Catholic High School Primary, Singapore Chinese Girls’ School and St. Anthony’s Canossian Secondary School – will be performing. The line-up includes popular songs as well as classic ones. Bring the whole family, a mat, and a picnic basket, and you’re all set.

15. Festive Cake-Pop Making

Suitably themed for Easter, this culinary and crafting class embarked on the 90 minute of fun based on a story of the lost magic hen. Designed for children 2 to 7 years old. An adult may accompany those below 5 years old at no charge.

16. Think Mathematically

This programmes, specially designed by Math Monkey for eXplorekid, will help your child to build logic and critical thinking skills through fun games and mental exercises. 18. Pirates Ahoy!

This themed workshop will see your little one become a pirate for a day while making learning English fun and exciting! The Reading Mission for 3 to 6 year olds will allow kids to experience Integrated Phonics through songs, rhymes and poems, and Listening and Reading Comprehension through Immersive Reading Strategies. One parent will be required to accompany junior.

The Writing Mission for Primary 1 and 2 students features a fun scavenger hunt to uncover a treasure trove of Adjectives, Conjunctions and Verbs. Kids will create their own creative story and learn about creative writing.
