Hi Rosnyus,

Different teachers accept students at different age. Actually it depends on individual child. Some children can start as early as 3 if they can recognise alphabets and numbers.

Need not to be able to write yet as there are a lot of other activities to reinforce on theory.

Hi hi, just to share more on what age to start. Most 4 years old children would develop better hand-eye coordination skills. They also start using their hands more and decide if they want to be a right hander or left hander.
They also start to understand concepts of place and direction, such as up, down, under, beside. They also develop the ability to balance and have better eye/hand/body coordination. All these would help them in piano learning and let them make out more of the lessson.

Yup, agree with jcleo. Generally 4 yr old is a good age. But do not afraid to start earlier as every child is an individual. You will never know what is the outcome if you don't try

oh okies, my toddler will only be two in sep. but kiasu me i've bought a Schoenhut Piano for him, due for delivery in aug.

i also live nearby buangkok mrt - so in the future, if i do want to get piano lessons for him - jcleo, your place would be very convienient.

cheers

hi rosnyus,
your toddler is heading for a good start

which one did you buy?

you may take your toddler to my place for an assessment of his/her readiness to learn when he/she is older, and you think he/she is ready to start.

daycare durable - very expensive investment for a toy piano; he better not damage it :p

sure, will do -- i will keep your email addy.

You might wan to consider to send him for some group lessons first before starting him individual as to cultivate his interest. There are some schools offer music lessons for children as young as 18mths

Hi Pianojazzy,

can i know what will be the market rate for grade 2 lesson at home?

is it important for the piano teacher to have a Diploma (in piano teaching??)? actually what does that meant? better qualified? will there be a fee difference if the teacher is a diploma holder?

if i want to get a piano teacher for my son, how do i know that teacher is good?

thanks a lot.

Hi,

You mean market rate for gr 2 lessons for home visits? it is about 140 to 180 depending on teacher's qualification.

Actually there are different types of diplomas - Teaching and Performing.

In Teaching diploma, for ABRSM, there is a viva voce section where 2 examiners will ask questions on how to teach different technique or different grades etc. All about how to teach etc.

For trinity, there will be a paper on this as well.

However for performing diploma, it is like other graded exams - 3/4 pieces to prepare and perform (depending which exam board)

Hence, teachers with teaching diplomas and considered 'know how to teach, as they passed the exam already.

However, there are also teachers who can teach well but does not take teaching diploma etc.

Normally teachers will higher qualifications will charge higher.

you can get more info from my blog - www.pianolessons.multiply.com

Hope this helps

hi mummies: hope to tap on your experiences. my son's ABRSM exam is scheduled on 17/9 at 10.15 a.m. this is a school day & he will have to be absent from school to sit for the exam. i'm quite disturbed by this & would like to know if this is the case for all ABRSM exams. is the date & time dictated by the centre his teacher requested or by ABRSM? are there other exam centres who hold exams on non-school days? i remember both my sisters learnt piano till grade 7 & neither of them seemed to have piano exams clash with their school lessons.

Hi,

I am looking for a piano teacher for my 7 yr old who is willing to travel to my home in Redhill area. If the teacher is based near my home, I will be most happy to go to the teachers home.

If you know of any, do PM me. Thank you.

Hi Olwen,
The exam timing is arranged by ABRSM and is arranged in UK side. The exam period is July to Sept so exam can be from any day from this period. Exams are held from Mon to Fri and from 9am to 515pm.

If the teacher is registering for your child, she can only request for preferred area and month of exam, AM or PM. There is no way to ask for certain dates.
If you are really bothered by it, next time ask you teacher to request for PM session. Though all requests are not guaranteed, but there is a chance of getting it.

For more info on ABRSM exams, you may like to visit my blog.

Hope this helps

Hi, my gal is learning piano at the moment and she's 4 years old. She currently uses a keyboard to practise at home but I think the feel as compared to playing on a real piano is different. Piano keys are 'heavier' and need to use more strength, loudness also different. I still don't know how long she will learn, whether she's keen etc. Should I buy a piano?

to mermmy, for my opinion, actually u oledi invest the money in your daughter piano journey since the 1st lesson you pay for it.but u din give her a proper piano to practise that actually U r wasted something.

of cos keyboard never can compare with a piano.not only touching feel,n the sound produce also total different.I suggest U buy a second n cheap piano let her practise.anywer, hope u don mind wat I suggest to u.

Hi all,

My son is currently with cristo**** and he is preparing for his grade one exam early next year. As this music school only organise exam for their students in July. Hence, I will need to register him as private candidate. And his teacher just left and the new teacher who takes over is not helpful.

I will like to know roughly when the registration for next year exam will start? Don wanna wait till july '10.

Hi pianojazzy,

do you know where can i buy Christian songs music scores (english and chinese)?

my boy came back telling me that he likes the songs sang in his church kindy very much, would like to learn to play himself, other than asking the teacher for the scores, any idea where can i buy them?

searched those christian shops, but they don't sell music scores.

thanks.

hi teachers,

do you charge by per 4 lessons? or per month? In the event that the lesson falls on a public holidays, is it still chargeable? any make-up for mc or other reasons (eg funeral wake, wedding)?

the centre manager told me the new policy is no makeup for any reason. even mc also no makeup!!!

Hi Sumiko,

For schools' policy, normally they do not do replacements. As for private teachers, every teacher has their own policy as well. Some charges per 4 lessons and some charges per month basis.

hi pianojazzy

is it true that some teachers will take holidys but parents will still have to pay?
eg, pay every 4 lessons, come year end, it will be only 2 lessons, same payment as the teacher is "resting".

Hi Happy_33, will pm u the contacts of my friend.

Hi Sweetheart,
Yes this is a market practise. Generally is about 6-8 holidays per yr. I am taking 4 per year. Schools take 6 per year.

Though there are some teachers who do not take holidays but increase the fees etc.

Hi Pianojazzy,

I just visited your blog. Its seems your last post was last year?

My daughter just got her result yesterday and she scored a distinction. Her teacher suggested to let her skip grade 2 and proceed to grade 3 straight. I am worried that it will be stressful for her. Will appreciate your input.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Yup haven been updating it as i am preparing the new website now.

It is ok to skip to grade 3 if her sight reading is good enough. Also have to start scales asap as both hands together is not easy. However once they get the hang of it, it will be much easier.

Cheers

Hi,

My active 6 yrs old will be completing his MCFC by end of this month, which he started 2 years back. However, when we check with Yamaha, it seems that he cannot proceed with JXC and will need to start from foundation, JMC, again for at least 1 year. All along, we thought MCFC is similar to JMC and he can proceed to JXC, so sort of at a lost now.

Instead of taking 1 more year to complete JMC, we are thinking if there's any other options. Should we get him a piano teacher (probably near where we stay) instead and travel to the teacher's place as I think he will be distracted at home? Or should we let him continue with Yamaha or other schools? Or any other options we can consider? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi Busymummy,
What is the reason that he can't progress to JXC?
Normally they will be assessed after the course and they will be recommended what is the next course to take. Do take a look at what is his problem. It might be better to start of 1-1 now as he is already 6. If not by the time he is able to take grade one he will be 9 or 10 and will be learning piano for 6 yrs by then.
