Piano Lesson


Where do you stay? There's Philia music school at Goldhill near Utd Sq. Teachers there are generally more qualified as my friend (who's the co-owner) is quite picky about who she gets in to teach. It's a small school and environment is nice. You can google and check it out.
 
Hi all, I am looking for piano teacher to teach my girl ( Sec 1 ) classical piano, Diploma ABRSM. I live at Bukit Batok ( Parkview Apt ). She passed G8 last Sept. Any recommendations?

I'd be glad to take her (after auditioning) but I stay at Toa Payoh, and I don't travel to students' place. There's a music school at Upper Bkt Timah, next to Railmall, Methodist School of Music. There are a few good teachers teaching there.
 
Thanks jce. Afraid she doesn't know how to commute beyond school and home yet ( yeah, my fault ) so it's nearby MSM or home for the time being.

If you have any good recommendations around Burgundy Hill area, do let me know.

Hi! Nice to hear from you in the forum again. Thanks for all the tips & advice that both of you have been given me the prev time. BTW, I have not changed the piano teacher for my elder ds as i need someone who can travel to my home. Now searching for a violin teacher for my younger ds.

I met Sylvia Ng last year while looking for someone to teach her piano ( Dip ). She has a tiny studio but very prompt secretarial support, unlike MMS.

My deepest impression is that she is a very easy going , soft spoken lady ( sounds foreign ) and accommodating with my daughter's erratic time-table. Teaches weekends and late in the evening as well, ideal for my girl with a thousand CCAs. If your kid is the timid type, she will be ideal. She charges reasonable fees as well.

The reason we didn't take her up is because my girl wanted a studio with grand piano, which they didn't. Other than that, I consider her a good choice.
 
My girl is also taking her Violin ABRSM Grade 2 end of this year, her first violin exam. May I know if a piano accompanist is compulsory?

Hi Mrs Chow, an accompanist is compulsory. You can get somebody who's competent enough (eg a friend) to play the accompaniment as long as your daughter (and you) are comfortable with that. The accompanist's playing is not marked so it will not affect your daughter's marks. But sometimes bad accompnying does affect the instrumentalist's playing in a negative way and good playing affects the instrumentalist in a positive way. That's why there are pianists who do solely accompanying as it is a different ball-game as compared to solo playing.

Hi Mrs Chow, I have a friend's niece under Sylvia. She has frequent performance overseas in a year but she does video conference with her when she is overseas. Hence will not slow down the progress.

Normally the violin school or voilin teacher has accompanist so not to worry unless your girl is not comfortable with the accompanist. I have a student who didnt like the accompanist so he look for one himself.

any comments on ossia music school and methodist school of music ?
 
Thanks j foo, Mrs Chow, pianojazzy for your reply on Sylvia. Yes, she is a soft spoken and nice lady. However, her charges is quite high. $400/mth for 60min lesson. Or $200/mth for small group lesson with her. Wondering how she can teach a small group of children at different levels.
Hi pianojazzy, do you prepare your students for piano competition? There is one coming this June by DynamicWorkz. Actually, my girl is very interested to take part but her piano teacher some kind of discourging her. Telling me is quite difficult. I was angry and thats why looking for a change. After assessing by Slyvia, she told me that my girl is capable to go for the competition. Strange!
 
Can someone please tell me besides Yamaha, where else can i possibly get music books at reasonable rates? :)
 
There is Cristofori all over the island and Music Essentials (for more "advanced" and specialised books which sometimes aren't carried by the other music stores) at Orchard Rd. There's also a music shop at Tanjong Katong. Actually majority of the music school will carry the basic books that are widely use.
 
why want to get 2nd hand yamaha music books? The music books are all came with stickers. If your child used 2nd hand, then got no more stickers to paste during the lesson.

recently,my schedule is a bit messy,due to students are taking piano exam soon,a lot of extra lessons.after the exams,my time will be more vacancies,cos few grade 8 students graduated and PSLE students temporary stop for the lesson.
 
just remembered your son also having exam soon...
but grade 1 is easy to pass,don worry....

how is his preparation?
