Dear all,

I am a father of 4 years old . He is afraid of many things. For example , when I bring him to swimming pool, he refuse to go down the pools or touch the water. At first , I thought i expect from him too much. But recently I go with him on a farm trip. He is quite timid as compared to other kids the same age. What should I do ? Give him more space or should I exposed him more outdoor adventure activities ?

Hi Lim,

I understand your worry.
Just give him time and keep exposing different adventures to him.

When my son was 3-4, he was afraid of ceiling fan, kites in d sky. When I mean afraid, it can get to situations like being hysterical, refusing to get in to a friend's or relative house during CNY and all other occassions, refuse to enter a coffee shop.....etc..was such a nightmare then..To the extent even when I was looking for a property, my prerequsite must do without ceiling fan..haha

He grew out of it after about 1 year...he's now 5. He now has a little brother whom started to get nightmares of kites when I first brought him to marina barrage a month ago...the cycle goes again.

Be assure they will grow out of it one day and when they do, it would be at a very unexpected moment

Tks ice queen for your reply . I am feeling more relaxed now . At least I am now relax. I will give more space while encourage him to be more confident

Hi Lim
Happen to see your post her.

Regarding your boy's behaviour, may I ask if he has speech delay and does he socialise with kids or comfortable with messy play?

Sorry if I ask too much, am just wondering if he could have sensory issues that's why he is afraid to try. My boy also has some sensory issue and it takes him a while to try new things

Hi Srumpee,
May I know when & how do you realised your son has sensory issue? My Dec'08 son is slow in speech but behave affectionated to people he likes. eg, maid, teachers. He behave timid & shy towards new thing & people. Is this because we did not expose him outdoor adventure activities?

i think play is a very impt component in growing up... being afraid of things may have many reasons... my daughter used to be afraid of sand, water etc... after she does some tuition lessons with this tutor, she got better now. my tutor also includes brain training activities...
