Hi Hippo,
I really having a headache but it's early to think about it. CHIJ TP is all girls school and direct affiliation to secondary school. Pei Hwa doesnt have any affiliated secondary school, but kids fm PH generally have good results.

Dear Janet,
How's it going girl? Hope all is well...
Just a piece of advise (and also to all mummies). If you wanna choose a primary school for your kid, I think you will have to look at the distance first (nearby, very far). Cos we have to take into consideration that the kids will be doing some kind of CCA in future, so if we find a very far (but very good) school for them, they will be tired, and the journey is killing. I think the education in Spore is more or less OK & quite standard. I have a close friend who put her girl in Raffles cos she was ex-student, and also a good school. But she stays in Clementi. She's a housewife so she drives the girl every morning. But Raffles have alot of after school activities at least 2-3 times a week. So her girl is home by around 4.30-4.45 pm daily. Din ask her how is her girl coping though.

Janet, with regards to yor dilema about choosing CHIJ TP or PH, I think you have to look at which is nearer? I would think PH is nearer to your home. Since your boy is already there and you more or less know the routine/syllubus/rules/principal etc, then seems a good choice to me. However CHIJ TP has an affiliated sec school, so to be on the "safe" side, it is also a good choice. If I'm you, I will go for CHIJ, knowing that there is an affiliated sec school. This is just to play "safe". But then again, if you enrol your girl in PH, not to worry too much, cos in future, you will still be able to find a good sec school for her, just need to search around a bit.

My girl is in CHIJ Our Lady of the Nativity. The adffiliated sec school is CHIJ St. Joseph. We managed to get in cos for Catholics, it is direct entry.

Hi Mummies,

I thought CCAs are not compulsory right? If we really cannot and do not have the means to fetch them back from school after CCAs, we can choose not to join any? Does any mummies know if there is any "implications/consequences" if we were to drop CCAs? Will it affect his/her promotion to secondary schools in anyway?

I am working fulltime and the school I intend to register for my child is not within walking distance (no schools within walking distance fm my place). I do not have a domestic helper so unless there is transport arranged by the school, I really am not able to fetch her back after CCAs.

HI Samval,
Wow, your daughter is already in primary school. How time flies.
I appreciate your valuable advice regarding the school to choose for my daughter. Like you mentioned, CHIJ TP has affiliated sec school 'to be on the safe side'. There are pros & cons for both PH & CHIJ. However, my hubby has written in to CHIJ for the certification letter (for Phase 2A2).

I know the rules, routine, principal of Pei Hwa...this school emphasizes a great deal on academic excellence - can be stressful for the child and the parents. Rules are very strict.

Patphua, you alr signed up as PV though your son is borned in 2004? My gal is also 2004 leh but I still haven do anything abt her Pr Sch. When shd I start doing research for her?

Hi Giggler,
Sorry to jump in. But I think it's time to do some research for your daughter's primary school. In fact, it's time to send in letter to do parent volunteer to the school(s) of yr choice. Schools will have started to assess potential parent volunteers. Parent volunteers have to complete 40 hours before the year of registration. My daughter is also a 2004 child.

Hi Gerberas,
CCAs are not compulsory, but advantageous. The schools will always encourage the kids to take up at least 1 form of CCA. I don't think it will affect the chiild's promotion to sec school. I know of some parents who "force" their kids to do CCAs and I know of some who don't go for any CCAs at all. It all depends on the child if she/he wants to do it or not, if he/she enjoys it, and most importantly, if he/she can cope.

I think some schools have compulsory CCAs, I'm not so sure. In my daughter's school, they have this buddy reading system, so it is compulsory that they stay back once a week for buddy reading program, from 2-3pm. don't know if that is called CCA??

Hi Samval,

Thanks for your note. Though my gal will only be in P1 next year, I'm already worried about transport arrangements, etc. Haiz...will think of it when the time comes. Now, will have to think of which school to register first.

Hi Gerberas,

I can understand how u feel. I was also very kanchiong! Usually on the orientation day, there will be a booth for the transport arrangements, and they will inform the parents by then.

Take it easy.

HI Samval,
I sent an email to CHIJ TP primary. The reply was that there is no need to ballot for Phase 2A2, so fortunately can save on the $80 alumni for Phase 2A1. Now is to decide in 3 years' time where to put her. It depends on how my son progresses in school, although every child is different.

For phase 1 - phase 2A2 is all gurantee no ballot required . Phase 2B onwards then depending on the applicants and vacancy left then decide whether to ballot or not . If ballot then distance will come in place

Janet, thanks for your reply.

Hi A&E,
Thanks for the info. Didn't know it's really guranteed for earlier phases. For Phase 2B, there will be balloting if demand exceeds supply.

HI Samval,
How is yr daughter adjusting to Primary 1 in CHIJ ? I understand CHIJ St Nicholas is a SAP school and so it's quite stressful there. My SIL's daughter is in that school...P3 now.

hi,
what about Hong Wen sch? Heard that its a sap sch.
Is it good?

To choose between Hong Wen and SJI Jnr, which one will you choose?

hi nissin,
if distance is not a concern, i would choose SJI due to the affliation to secondary schools.

Hi Gals,

I am also in a dilemna over my boy's future Pri sch. Its either St Hilda's or St Stephen's cos its mine and his dad's alma mater. SS has affiliated Sec sch but SH dun have. SH is nearer to my place but SS is near to my MIL place so she can help me pick him up from school after his CCA. Standard wise, of course SH is better.

Between this two, which one will you gals choose??

Hi Minnie,

Just to let you know. St. Hilda's has affiliated secondary school => St. Hilda's Secondary School.

Hi fz,
I personally also prefer SJI Jnr in fact. But Hong Wen is within 1 km whereas SJI is 1-2km. Not sure can secure a plc there in SJI or not. Afraid if cant get a plc there, will tend to forfeit HW as well.. dilemma. Headache.

Heard that SJI (Sec) needs to pay a higher monthly sch fees, is it true?

Hi, Janet
Read your post about your son's classmate's dad who is a member of the Hokkien Huay Guan. Can I get in touch with him? I'm interested to join the Guay Guan but need two referrals to do so. Wanna get my son into Nan Chiau. Pretty desparate :D

Minnie

last year PSLE scholar was from St Hilda's

Standard wise, I will go for St Hilda's

Logistic wise, St Stephen probably makes more sense since your MIL can fetch

Must consider what's the after school arranagement if you send him to St Hilda's.

Hi Minnie,

SHPS is a GEP school. Not sure abt SSPS's std. But if your MIL is going fetch your son, you may want to visit SSPS to find out more. You may "interview" or observe the kids there. Chk with the school for their past yrs' PSLE statistics. With all the info on hands, you'll be able to make a better choice for your son.

If you choose SSPS, your son'll hv 2 choices of sec schools in future, either SJI or St. Patrick. SJI sec school is reputable. But your son must score certain points in order to get in. St. Patrick sec is also not bad. As for St. Hilda Sec school, I'm not sure abt its std.

Hope it helps. I'll only decide if I know the std of SSPS.

Hi Hippo and Ren,

Thanks so much for your views. I will prob visit their Open House, if they have, to get a better feel of the school. But SHPS is GEP, wonder if it will be stressful for the child. My boy is not those super clever type also. Personally, I would choose SHPS cos its nearer to my place. But MIL says he should go to his daddy's old school. Hb says he will go wif whichever school I decide...

Sorry to jump in. I am leaving in Kovan area and has a few pri schools nearby. Can anyone tell me which is better? Rosyth, Paya Lebar MGS, Zhonghua, Holy Innocent, Montford Jnr, XinMin, Parry?

Rosyth is definitely the best in terms of academic results and its one of the few schools that offer GEP. Paya Lebar MGS is also good too. Both these are very popular schools.

Hi Neko,

PLMGS is good... My friend's daughter studying there. Been hearing nice things.

Their prog very well-established too.

Thanks for your advise.
Both are within 2km of my house. Still don't know which one to choose. I have a gal and a boy, naturally should go for Rosyth. But I personally I like methodist school more as I was from its secondary school.

By the way, is PLMSG one of the better MGS? There are several methodist sch like MSG, FMPS, PLMSG, GLMGS.

Hi, just to share about affiliated schools. I think if want to choose the school due to affiliation, better confirm with the principal if the pri school is indeed affiliated to a sec school. Because same name may not mean affiliates. Example, Temasek Pri / Anderson Pri are not affiliated to Temasek Sec / Anderson Sec respectively. Also heard that because some secondary schools feel that they took in too many affiliated pri school students with very low marks, they stop giving priority. I'm not sure how true this is but better be sure. Otherwise, very "tui".

Hi,

What do you mean raise the points for affiliated primary? Does it mean a student from MGS Primary needs more points to enter MGS Sec?
TIA for the info!

Cameron, it's not sufficient to enter MGS Secondary if our child is from MGS primary and made it into express stream. Need more points to enter MGS secondary but fewer points than if from unaffiliated secondary school.

Usually those primary and secondary schools that are affiliated to each other are either missionary schools or from certain clan/associations. They are not government schools. That's why Temasek and Anderson are not affiliated to their secondary schools.

For MGS pri girls to enter into MGS sec, the min entry pt is 220. There is no normal stream for MGS Sec - all express. MSG Pri is government aided but MGS Sec is private sch (ie. sch fee is close to $300 per mth).
RGPS is not affiliated to RGS.
You can go into the MOE website and find out more on which sch has affiliation.

Hi Irene,
u stay near river valley?
i'm contemplating too between RV and henry park.. but really can't make up my mind.

Hi Reg28,

I stay at tiong bahru area. I check Inlis & 2 schools are within 1km fm my home. River Valley Pri & Zhangde Pri.

Hi OK
My son is in Pei Chun. I would proudly say it is a nice school and my son enjoying it very much, with lots of stories to share everytime he is back from School. The principal is a very nice man who tell them lots of character building stories. Your kid is attending the schooL? From what I see of him, I don't think he looks stressful to me. May be too young to feel the stress .........

OK, my niece & nephew-in-law are frm Pei Chun. The strange thing is, even if they were in the top cohort, they happen to be attending "extra" lessons almost everyday. I dunno what's the "extra" lessons were. Just recently, I heard that the P6 Science teacher cover 2 chapters in 1 wk.

But they are rather well-known for their WuShu CCA.
