Shopping Mum,
Gong Shang is not a sap school, but it's popular. Just like Woodgrove is not a sap school, but it's popular. I can't help but think that maybe if I start spreading good word about a certain school, parents will also start to think that that particular school is a good school. haha ...
Poi Ching is in Tampines.

Serene,
My pick would be CHIJ (Bt Timah). My reason would be the cohort of children who go there.

Thanks rains!

How about other mummy out there, will you choose Chong Fu(Yishun) or CHIJ(Bukit Timah)Primary school? My sis really can't make up her mind.

Thanks in advance.

I remembered it was reported in the news last year
parent volunteers for Chong Fu need to ballot
it's a very popular neigbourhood school

Stan

if you do volunteer, you are in phrase 2B

example if 50 vacancies in phrase 2B, and 45 parent volunteers/grassroot leaders within 1km, all 45 will get in

the balance 5 vacancies will be ballot among parent volunteers living 1-2km

parents volunteers outside 2km become free labour lor

however, if there are 50 vacancies and 60 parent volunteers/grassroot leaders within 1km, you will still end up balloting

need to check with the particular school what is its past statistic

Shopping Mum

I called St Hilda's last year. parent volunteers need to ballot.
since I'm outside 1km, I didn't consider the school

Yes i try to write in to volunteer myself for St Hilda's but was rejected maybe because too many mothers way infront of me.

Should we call ourselves Kiasu mummies!!!???

Hi Mummies,
My son's classmate went to Chong Fu. Understand her dad is a member of the Hokkien Association.

Hi Stan,
CHIJ Bukit Timah (Pri) is affiliated to CHIJ St Theresa's Sec in Bukit Purmei. I did think of putting my daughter there next time since I am ex-IJ student, but from the one in Toa Payoh. If I want my gal to go to CHIJ Toa Payoh Sec, she will have to be in CHIJ TP Pri.
Sorry for being long-winded.

I did...though still a long way before my children enters Pri School but indeed interesting to read up. Though it does make sense to put your children near to your home, however, still mum favourite to put them on 'better school'.

Haha..

hi,
may i know wat is CHIJ stand for? which is it located?

I am staying very neat to Nanyang Primary which I know this is a popular school & hard to get in despite I am within 1km.

Just wanna know if there is any other primary school near my area if we fall to secure a place at Nanyang??

Janet,
Hi5! I am also ex-IJ student bt fm Bt Timah one.

how good is Chong Fu? my boy born in 2003. does anyone has Chong Fu's past statistics showing 1-2km phase 2B, need to ballot?

I called up and asked but the lady said she is new and wanted to hang up the phone very quickly.

My concern is what if I can't secure a seat at Chong Fu, then, may be by that time, canberra is alrady full house. it's quite a risk. however, based on monday's straits time, the ballot is for phase 2b >2km and it's for dragon bb. so, for goat bb, i shd have higher chance (1-2km phase2b)?

p/s:i'm not kaisu but when i called up yesterday, i was told that the voluntary form for bb born in 2002 are already taken up, so i quickly went there n get the form for bb born in 2003 ;)

Thanks.

I think we should choose a school that is consistent with what we believe in education. doing volunteer work in the school is a good way to know the school better and whether the environment is suitable for my child.

I remember reading somewhere in this forum that some parents dropped the school after doing volunteer work because they realised it is not what they want for their child

also depends on whether you want your child to be a small fish in a big pond (elite) or a big fish in a small pond (neigbourhood)

can someone tell me where can I find the examination papers from top primary school ?

I have found e-bay is selling but is there some online/download versions for my child to practise ?

Thank you

You can even find them at neighbourhood centrals, eg Jurong East, AMK, Bishan, Tampines etc etc.

But the testpapers are not in module, so your kid basically hv to know all of Term 1&2's work before he can practise SA Papers.

And it is really expansive, like $50++ per set !!

I managed to buy P1 exam papers at $35 for all 3 subjects at Thomson Plaza. I think they are selling $25 per subject but if you buy all 3, they give you a special price. BTW, there is another discussion thread where a lady offered to email free copies to interested parties. But I am not sure from which schools. You might want to check it out.

also depends on how well the child is able to fit in to the school

for example if the child Chinese standard is not too high, refused to speak the language, write chinese characters, better forget about SAP school, will be struggling anyway

My personal option: looking for a good school is one of the considerations but I guess we must consider one more important factor - affiliation in Secondary School. With affiliation, parents and kid won't be so stress over not getting into a reasonable good sec school cos the entry point is lower for their existing student. Eg, St Anthony, ACS, St Margaret, etc. So if you kid does very well, she / he can choose to go to another better sec school. However, if you kid didn't do very well, he / she still go to a reasonably good sec sch due to affiliation.

I'm at a loss now, although it's really too early to decide on primary school for my 4 yr old daughter.
Like what Helen mentioned, if CHIJ TP primary (which I was previously from) is affiliated to the secondary school, my daughter will still make it there if her results arent that fantastic. But then Pei Hwa (which my son is in now) is within walking distance. Dont know if I should put my gal in Pei Hwa (Phase 1 direct entry) or CHIJ TP (Phase 2A2 ex-student).

Janet, if you were previously from CHIJ TP, any priority given if you enrol your girl to CHIJ in Upper Bukit Timah (thought there is a CHIJ around upp Bt Timah)? Sound like you are staying around bt timah. Have you ever considered MGS? There is affiliation to MGS Sec School (min 220 with affiliation to get into MGS Sec). I understand that there is no affiliation to Pei Hwa Sec Sch. But of course, distance is also one of the important factors cos a lot of traveling time will be wasted taking school bus.

Helen,
No affiliation to CHIJ TP secondary for CHIJ Bukit Timah. If I put my gal in MGS, she will be in Phase 2C...very hard to get in.

I think if she is in phase 2C within 1 km is still ok cos within 1 are houses and condos. The population is not as bad as housing estate area.

Helen,
The good thing about putting my gal in Pei Hwa is the 100% attention I can give her in the morning and close proximity to home. That's about it.

Janet

Hwa Chong has DSA. Even if Pei Hwa has no affliation, you can consider Hwa Chong DSA. Don't have to worry about JC then

Hi, does anyone knows if Rosyth School easy to get in if lives within 1km? Am considering if need to do parent volunteer work.

Hi sahm888,

Are you now a parent volunteer at Chong Fu? My son is born in 2004. Just went to fill up the parent volunteer form on last Thursday. Heard from the staff that there is a need for parent volunteer who lives outside 2km to ballot.

I checked my distance and it's 1.7km from the school. Don't know got chance or not.

Hi Hippo,
Sorry very suaku, but what is Hwa Chong DSA. I dont dare to think so far, just up to secondary school good enough.

Pei Hwa is known for its emphasis on academic excellence. Since my daughter will qualify for both Phase 1 & 2A2, I will not think about this issue in the meantime. Will check the distance between my place and MGS (out of curiousity)

Janet

DSA is 'direct school admission' without waiting for PSLE results. It's a 6 years programme from secondary to JC level. Pei Hwa no affliation you can aim Hwa Chong

My neighbour said it's better to enrol in a primary school with affliation to a good secondary school. The primary schools around my house have no affliation to secondary schools too
