Children's Dentist

I started sending my kid for dental checkup at the age of 3 or 4 (when she has her full set of teeth). It is a pedodontist(specialised in kids)at Mt Elizabeth Hospital #04-05. Basically, the clinic is very kid friendly with TV, cartoon characters. The kids will be given stickers or small little reward after the treatment. She is DR Elizabeth Tan. Contact is 67389081

Hi Helen

Can I check how much are the charges at the dentist? Just checked with two others and consultation alone is $80 - $100 excluding cleaning which is another $100 - $120.

wow.. very ex. any cheaper option?
I am keen to bring my son to a dentist and I wan it to be a regular thing so that he will get used to dentist brushing and checking. I wouldnt want him to have bad experience like my hubby and be like my hubby :hating to go dentist.
In dilemna

Got a good recommendation from ex-colleague. But personally have not tried it. My bro did though and my nephew was not scared of the dentist at all after the treatment despite at 3 years old. Try searching the yellow pages for Hosanna Dental Clinic (located at Toa Payoh Lor 1). I dun have the contacts.
My Bro paid $100+

Just called the GPA Dental recommended above and the cost is abt $105 (Polishing $70 and $35 for consultation) Sounds alot more reasonable and they also have a special kids dental room. Likely to go try it.

The pedodontist I went at Mt Elizabeth Hospital cost abt $80-100 in total (consultation + polishing/cleaning).

Try my dentist, he is Dr Tay at Sparkle Dental located at Novena Square 2. He is off on Fri and Sat. Tel: 63976508 / 63976509. Appt needed. He did 2 extractions for my then 6 year old. He is extremely gentle and careful.

Went to GPA at united square yesterday. When I called and ask about the price, they quoted me $70 for extraction. When I reached there, I was told to do x-ray for my kids, polishing without any mention about extra cost.
I ended up paying almost $300 for the entire procedure. I am fine with the cost but they did not say anything about paying extra.....
Service is good but cost is not.
The breakdown is as follows:
- Extraction $70
- x-ray $100
- polishing $35
- Some kind of laser treatment $70
- Then include GST.

So my advice is please ask about the cost before proceeding with any treatment suggested. We might not need it after all........

i brought my 3 yr old cheryl to Germaine at Sunshine Dental in woodlands. this is cheryl's first visit and she was very afraid but germaine managed to make her feel so comfortable throughout the treatment. the hole was so big and cheryl did not even cry on the second visit. i must say that germaine has been bvery patient and attentive with kids. she even made flower balloons for her after every visit. now cheryl keeps on asking when is the next dental visit. :)

Hi,

My son, 3 yrs old, grows a small lump at his gum. It happens few months back. Didn't take it to heart at first but now worried cos the lump didn't swell and it seems to get a little bigger.

The place of the lump is at near the teeth where he once had a bad fall and hurt his teeth then.

I am worried about the dental cost too and whether he like to see dentist or not. He terribly don't like to see dentist. So, hope to find one that is very child friendly.

Can anyone recommend me any good dentist and roughly let me know the estimated cost?

Hi CrispyApple,

I was doing a search for pedodontist and I chanced upon your post. When I read your post, it seemed to describe exactly my son's condition too. May I know if you have sought treatment for your son and what has been done? Thanks in advance for sharing.

Hi CrispyApple and Phyllis,

How are ur sons condition? Did you bring them to see dentists? My 3 yr old son fell from a stool on Sat and night time we found a lump on his gum where he complained pain earlier on when he fell. But when we asked him whether the lump is painful, he said no. I wonder whether we should bring him to see a dentist or the lump will go away in a few days?

Please let me know what did ur dentist advise if u had seen a dentist, if not, did the lump went away after a few days? Thanks.

Hi Jade and crispyapple,

My girl 6 also have this lump on the gum. She had a fall many years ago and this lump only appear 3 days ago.

Hi,
anyone has encountered your kid fell and hurt his tooth knocked at and dropped off at 2 yrs old?
Any good dentist to recommend?

someone recommeded me Dr Eileen Neo at Thomas dental centre before...said to be very good with children. have anyone see her before? heard her charges quite reasonable too.

Tried GPA today at holland village. Not too bad. Dentist Desmond Goh was a young guy who is very patient with my son. Manage to get some cleaning and polishing done. total is 112.35 with GST.

Diagnosis 35
Scaling and polishing 70.

But ultimately my son has a few cavities and still might need to go under GA.

Going to bring my boy to GPA @ United Square this Sat. So surprise, this outlet do open on PH. Anyway, hope the service and charges will turn out to be pleasant one... : )

I just wanted to share my experiences with all of you.

My daughter who is now 5 years old has a lot of teeth problems, and no she doesn't eat sweet stuff or drink from a bottle. But when she was younger she hated brushing her teeth (still does now but is more strictly enforced). So as a consequence she had lots of cavities on her teeth and I can tell you that sometimes dentists can make you feel horrible about yourself and what a terrible job you did as a parent in taking care of your child's teeth. So if anyone's feeling down about what the dentist has said to you, I know how it feels.

Finding the right dentist that suits yours and your child's needs is basically trial and error. We visited DP Dental at Kovan because it was close to our place, but unfortunately the dentist wasn't competent enough to deal with my kid when it came time to drill because she kept saying her tongue was in the way. So they said they can refer us to a pediatric dentist. But I didnt think it was necessary to go through pediatric dentist, thinking of how much the costs would be, consultation alone with a specialist would be like $80.

After much research we went to GPA @United Square because it had a kids room. I can say that I'm satisfied with GPA only because I think the dentists are very professional and experienced in dealing with kids and that their consultation fees is reasonably (around $35). They knew how to handle them, talk to them nicely to put them at ease and they are able to complete the jobs quite fast (compared to our experience at DP Dental). Also the equipment they use are scaled down to children's size, including the seats. There's also a tv overhead that the children can watch while work is getting done on their teeth. But on the downside they are on the expensive side if you can't use CDA account to pay. One filling was $120 not including gst!

On a recent visit to get fillings, it was discovered that she had a swelling on her gum right underneath her molar. This is called an Abscess and is basically a pocket of pus from an infection in the tooth or root of the tooth. Usually it's accompanied by pain, but my girl didn't feel any pain. To treat it they gave a course of antibiotics to see if the swelling would go down and if not then she would have to do a root canal. A root canal on a 5 year old! Extraction isn't recommended if the tooth can be saved because she won't be losing the tooth naturally till she's 12.

So we went for a second opinion at Q&M at City Square (also based on the fact they had a kids room). The dentist also confirmed she needed a baby root canal. I figured ok since we were there already might as well get it done there and probably cheaper too. They quoted $300 for the root canal and $300 for the stainless steel crown to be done in a second procedure. Price wise I figured it would probably be cheaper than GPA. But after it was done, I really regretted going there. The Dr was insensitive to my child's needs, when she cried halfway because she said she felt pain from the drilling, he kept saying she shouldn't feel any pain as the tooth is dead and rather sternly said to her Why you crying?! I know for a fact that kind of talking doesn't work on my child. It was very heartbreaking. After a week, we came back to have the tooth patched and crown put on it. But because the swelling hadn't fully subsided he wanted to take out the temporary medicine filling in the tooth, which meant drilling the tooth again. My child was already traumatised the first time and cried immediately and said NO and refused to open her mouth and said she wanted to go to the other dentist. I tried to persuade her as best as I could while the Dr looked on and glanced at his watch. After about 20mins it was concluded that he won't be able to do it in this state and that was that. What annoyed me was they still charged us $50 for consultation fee! Just for him to watch me for 20mins trying to calm my child down! All in all, I was really disappointed with them. For DP Dental and GPA, both took photos of her teeth before and after the procedures for record keeping. I felt like they were better equipped with good technology and showed us her teeth on the computer screen before proceeding with any procedures. On hindsight this was probably a red flag I should have picked up when the Dr at Q&M didn't do any of that.

So although I can pretty much guarantee we will end up paying much more in the end at GPA dental, I think they are the best for us. Had we not been so concerned about finding a cheaper dentist, we could have saved ourselves a bunch of trauma and heartache.

Anybody tried National Dental Centre? Is it cheap to go in as private patient just to check on the kid's teeth?

Go to Smile Dental at East Coast. Dr Tan Tien Wang is gd with kids, and I hv seen him for years. The whole family sees him, cos he is the only dentist that I know who cares abt his patients.

Hi pig, you are lucky, I just bot my gal there recently due to an abscess tooth.

They are good, very professional. Clinic is nicely decorated with a kids play corner.

Fees wise is reasonable.

What else would you like to know?

Hi goodluck

You are right i'm so lucky, keke.
Mind to share how much you spend?

hi pig,

Sorry for this late reply, well forgotten about this thread.

OK, first visit consultation is $30. Extraction, we paid $80 cos my gal took 3 LA shots...I think for normal extraction is about $45.

Dentist wise, I am not sure, couple of them actually. The one that attended to my gal was a lady dentist, not bad. She is patient with my child and tried to distract her by talking to her.

I think this is about what I can comment.

Hi all, was recommended Dr Rashid of Children's Dentist by a colleague of mine. Anyone here had any experience with him?

Hi goodluck. How did they do e extraction? My 5 yr old son is very scare to see dentist wat more to let them touch his teeth. When to NDC last nov for extraction under ga. But we tried to save 1 of his milk tooth by fixing a crown. Now he complain of pain. Totally regret for not extracting the tooth back then. So i am wondering how do they extract the tooth & can they do it immediately on 1st visit or need to fix another appt for the extraction?

Hi srn21,

Well, as normal extraction, inject LA and then extract. But becos her tooth was badly infected, so the dentist had to inject her 3 times in order to numb it. But it was still painful for her when they extract. Of course, she struggled and cried, but we have no choice but to pin her down and have the tooth extracted. Somehow, the tooth has to be extracted otherwise, it's dangerous with all that infection.

Perhaps, you can try "convincing" him, explain to him it's impt to see the dentist to fix the problem tooth, before it gets worse.

Hi,

Just to share.

Brought my 3yo son to GPA Kids at United Square for 1st time check-up today. Total damage is $165.85 (inclusive of GST).
1) $35 for examination and Diagnoses
2) $70 for scaling and polish and
3) $50 for Fluoride application.

Not sure if the price is reasonable. Just want my son to have a good 1st time experience with dentist.

Before the trip, I kept telling him about what the dentist will do to prepare him. In the end, all turn out well than expected. He is good and co-operative throughout the session.

Hi,

My 4 year old is having tooth abscess, may i know which dentist in Smileworks is recommended for this? And did anyone of your child had to go for day surgery on GA?

I've been recommended dr rashid of the kid's dentist.

Please share your experiences.
Thank you!

To anyone out there, If your dentist recommends a crown on your little one's tooth after they do a baby root canal I would suggest to get a second opinion. If you're looking for an experienced dentist go see Dr Jason at GPA dentist. My child had her abscess treated there. The dental place also has a children's room with child size seats and child size equipment. And your child can even bring his favourite DVD to watch on the overhead screen.

Hi irenemummy,
May I know how old is your little one? Was ur child able to withstand the entire treatment?
Please share.. Thank u.

Hi Bubbles,

My daughter is 5. She had the abscess treatment mid this year. She's had fillings done before etc, so she knows the dentist and She was fine with the dentist until we brought her to Q&M at City Square and saw a dentist there who didn't know how to talk to children eventhough they also have a children's room - this was for a second opinion. With her abscess it didn't go away with a treatment of antibiotics so they had to do a baby root canal. The roots are supposedly dead and she's not supposed to feel any pain, but apparently she did and cried her eyes out. So after that she was super traumatised and wouldn't let any dentist touch her teeth again....Q&M also told us she'd needed a crown for her tooth. We took her back to her original Dr at GPA and he told us it wasn't necessary at all to have a crown! (wished we hadn't gone to that other dentist, could've spared all the tears and heartache) So it then took her a few goes to finally get everything done and lots of explaining and coaxing and role playing of what they'll do on the tooth.

The scary part of the whole procedure is the drilling of the tooth. They need to drill into the tooth to clean out the inside of the tooth ,put medicine in and then patch it up with a temporary filling. After the medicine does its job, you then go back for a permanent filling....so I guess it would depend on each child and their tolerance or fears.

We had the option to put her under GA. But we didn't think that it's necessary (also a bit scared what if there are complications from putting her under or something).

If your child hasn't been to the dentist before, it would probably take a few goes before they'd feel comfortable.

My daughter's abscess was on the back molar, so they didn't recommend extracting the tooth as it's not meant to come out naturally until 12ish. Or else in future that tooth will have problems when it comes out.
