Jachang,
Just try our luck i guess.... me also too late to prepare for PV...
sad.gif
Now under 2C...

Ocean,
Actually I drew up a time-table, but haven't been following it faithfully
embarrassed.gif

Maybe I'll start doing so this week, since I'm trying to offload some of my son's work back to him.

Don't say jiat luck...still have a whole year to go.

Hi Mommies,
I heard that it is complusory for kids to be able to read words when they first go to Pri 1. Is this true? My boy is just learning phonics and the basic words so hopefully by the end of the year, he can read.

Shimmers,
Use Word to create a table.
Start from the time the child returns home, and what you want him to do for the whole day until bedtime at night. For eg, English has grammar/vocab/cloze/comprehension. Maybe Monday to do grammar, Tue to do cloze, etc etc. Allocate some time to rest/play in between.

Janet
Wow!! Im impressed..so far Ive not set anythg for my boy..only daily homework and oral..like I asked him questions and he answered, frm there I'll correct him as and whr necessary..
Other than that,he spent his time on drawing a lot! We talked about his drawing or sometimes I'll ask him to write about his drawing, thats about all! A lot of activity is made out of his drawing only..I think I should craft out a time table like you but he comes home frm K2 only at 5pm,sometimes we'll eat out and be back only at 8pm. By then we'll be tired to go more except for his homework and some reading.

joopjoop
I think yes, it would be better for a child to be able to read before his P1. I guess at least he'll be able to read instructions given,he'll benefit a lil more if he's able to read..
This is only my POV..i dont know what other mummies feel, maybe Im wrong?:p

Shimmers,
With my daughter, it's mostly play for now. Occasionally hubby will teach her Maths. I've yet to start doing work with her.

Shimmers,
Yup, same age.
Prob won't be same school as brother...his brother's school is SAP school and higher chinese is no joke.

Shimmers,
Your kid got homework? Mine have nothing.... I am also not discipline, and i work late, and i enjoy orgainising spree... online shopping is really addictive...
blush.gif
So, at the end, i din spend much time teaching my gal...
uhoh.gif

Joopjoop,
Need to learn to at least read some basic words so that during test, they noe what is the question.

Janet,
Wow... actually i dun spend much time with my gal, so am thinkin of teachin during weekend. But hor, sad to say, i end up also din teach her much... Really impressed with u.
happy.gif

Hi Pocoyo,

I emailed the sch and they managed to trace my hubby's record =)

If your Hubby is ex-boy of Rulang, I'm guess your child will get in.

Hi joopjoop,
Its best/expected(actually) to be able to read b4 entering P1. P1 teachers dun teach student phonics. That's the basic of learning to read.

Hi Ocean,
I'm one of you regular.. heehee...

Re: Stressful childhood.
IMO, if the child was given a relatively amt of activities since young, they will gradually adapt to it and not feel stressful abt it. If the child is left to play all day, even 1 hr of tuition/homework can be stressful!

My boy currently have a few enrichments. Swimming, Gymnastics, Piano, Art and Chi tuition. Swim n Gym are conducted in sch after sch hrs. All enrichments r requested by him except Chi tuition. Last week, I asked him if he enjoyed all his activities, if dun like can drop out... but guess what? He simply loves every lessons and even requested if he can join his sch cookery class!!! Gotta say NO to him cos his time-table too packed :p

Ocean,
Don't tempt me about online shopping...I need some advice from you how to buy the stuff. BADLY need retail therapy now, bcos there is no time to go out
sad.gif

Eileen,
My son has a time-table since P1, so he's kinda used to having a routine (with complaints of course). He has swimming every Sunday.

Janet,
My son dun hv any time-table but I have.. hahaha.. going to create one and teach him how to read the table soon.. btw he's 5 =)

Eileen,
Nice "meeting" u here.
happy.gif
Ur boy 5yrs and u let him learn so many things. Wow....

My gal also 5yrs, in K2 now, but i only let her takes 2-in-1 phonics math and chinese. All from my downstair RC...

Actually, i hope she can learn some gongku, but she seemed not interested...
lame.gif

Shimmers,
Looks like all of us also mus learn from Janet. maybe for a start do a timetable? Actually, i think my gal timetable will look like this:-
<table border=1><tr><td> Time/Day</TD><TD>mon</TD><TD>tue</TD><TD>wed</TD><TD>thu</TD><TD>fri</TD><TD> sat </TD><TD> sun </TD></TR><TR><TD>630am</TD><TD>Wake up</TD><TD>Wake up</TD><TD>Wake up</TD><TD>Wake up</TD><TD>Wake up</TD><TD> Zzz </TD><TD> Zzz </TD></TR><TR><TD>8am</TD><TD>K2</TD><TD>K2</TD><TD>K2</TD><TD>K2</TD><TD>K2</TD><TD> Zzz </TD><TD> Zzz </TD></TR><TR><TD>1030am</TD><TD>K2</TD><TD>K2</TD><TD>K2</TD><TD>K2</TD><TD>K2</TD><TD> Chinese </TD><TD> play </TD></TR><TR><TD>12pm</TD><TD>Home</TD><TD>Home</TD><TD>Home</TD><TD>Home</TD><TD>Home</TD><TD> Home </TD><TD> play </TD></TR><TR><TD>1pm</TD><TD>Lunch</TD><TD>Lunch</TD><TD>Lunch</TD><TD>Lunch</TD><TD>Lunch</TD><TD> Lunch </TD><TD> play </TD></TR><TR><TD>2pm</TD><TD>Play</TD><TD>Play</TD><TD>Play</TD><TD>Play</TD><TD>Play</TD><TD> Watch TV </TD><TD> play </TD></TR><TR><TD>6pm</TD><TD>Dinner</TD><TD>Dinner</TD><TD>Dinner</TD><TD>Dinner</TD><TD>Dinner</TD><TD> Play </TD><TD> play </TD></TR><TR><TD>8pm</TD><TD>Play</TD><TD>English</TD><TD>Play</TD><TD>Play</TD><TD>Play</TD><TD> Play </TD><TD> play </TD></TR><TR><TD>10pm</TD><TD>Sleep</TD><TD>Sleep</TD><TD>Sleep</TD><TD>Sleep</TD><TD>Sleep</TD><TD> Play </TD><TD> Sleep </TD></TR><TR><TD>12mn</TD><TD>Sleep</TD><TD>Sleep</TD><TD>Sleep</TD><TD>Sleep</TD><TD>Sleep</TD><TD> sleep </TD><TD> Sleep </TD></TR><TR><TD></td></tr></table>

Janet,
Online shopping and organising spree is very addictive... Sometimes, see thing very cheap, cant resist to buy, and if cant buy organise spree so that i can see the things. Very jiat luck especially i dun hv much time.... but i truly enjoy the browsing and placing orders section. So, hubby kept saying i am sick. Felt offended at first, but now, i think he is rite. Whahhaaaa...
lame.gif

U let urself relax abit k. At least, I felt that u hv already done alot liao...
happy.gif

O, this week, her spelling are:
Grandfather
grandmother
father
mother
sisters
brothers

Something for all to learn and teach. Maybe we can share what things they learn in school to prepare them for P1?
happy.gif

Eileen

Where is your boy taking piano? He has lots of activities
wink.gif

I stopped all my dd's academic enrichments end of last year - phonics, abacus, Chinese. So now she only goes non academic ones like ballet, piano, art. Plan to start her on swimming this year.

Janet

I've a timetable for my dd. Basically after her kindy homework, piano practice, I hope to cover 2 subjects with her. But haven't been following it faithfully

Yawn,

We r currently in Brunei. Will only be returning end next yr. My boy will miss P1 n be bk for P2 in 2012. He's learning Piano using Suzuki method. I find it very good!

Shimmers,
I'm rather relaxed with my gal too actually...but forcing myself to do something with her when my son does his work.

Ocean/Yawn Yawn,
How do you insert that table ? Then I can show you the time table I drew up but never follow. HaHaHa.
So far no spelling for my daughter but simple Maths worksheet every Friday.

Yes, I agree that schooling is getting more difficult these days. My boy's first week of K2, he had 8 workds and some of these words were
1) astronaut
2) guitar
3) kangaroo
I remember that when I was in Pri 1, i only learn a for "apple", b for "boy".

Schooling is getting more difficult...what we used to learn in lower primary is now taught younger, what we learnt in upper primary is taught at P4.

Eileen
So u are in Brunei now? Life there pretty relax ya..I remember those days I went there to stay with my grandparents for a while during the school holidays, when I came back for school, my mind took a longer time to recharge..

Ocean
Ur timetable for your girl looks pretty much like mine..Hahahah.
Just that he has drum on Tues and Phonics on Sun and he goes to sch in the afternoon. So many hrs are burnt, we are left only few hrs before sleep on weekdays
sad.gif

I guess u wont have much of a prob coz girl will eventually grow up being responsible and independant unlike boys..Haizz I got hard time instill all those in my boy..kept forgetting his waterbottle/cap in sch bus and sch! The worst thing he didnt even know tht!!
I told him if he kept being irresponsible of his own stuff, how to proceed to P1??Tsk!!

Janet
I always feel having an elder child would be easier for the 2nd to follow..theres a template copy..

Shimmers,
Your grandparents r resident here? =)

Relax = boring cos no night life and entertainment lor..
But my life here is pretty busy cos 2 boys(age 3 &amp; 5)studying @ different sch with different timing.. plus their enrichments classes... I'm pratically on the road most of the time.. haha.. and I still hv a 22mth toddler to care for ;p

Shimmers,
Boys are really dependent! Mine forgets to bring his watch/wallet back when we go to mum's place. If we don't follow up, he will leave his homework file behind.

Oceans,
Can you please advise how to insert the timetable here ? Where can I find it ?

Oh..I miss out a lot posting, so busy with works nowaday.End up went back home so tired and can't guide my girls homework.

Here is my elder girl schedule,
Monday-icreative
Thur-Yahama music
Fri-Swimming
Sat-NAFA art
Sun- Chinese lesson and Piano lesson

Any children going for student care? I think my girl will be very tired when she entered P1.

Image if she is in afternoon session and she has to wake up same time with us when we go work so we can send her to student care.

Very worry that too tired for her and end up she can't pay attention in class.

Liz See

You find icreative useful?
I don't see much result when reach primary level. However, it's quite good for preschool level especially if the child can't read yet

why Yamaha music &amp; piano lesson on different days?

Eileen
Yeah but both passed away already..left my aunt and her family there..
I agree with you..the night is so early there..and if no mode of transport can die!
My aunt and cousin also spent most of their time on the road..but its ok when petrol is super cheap there!

Janet
I guess boys will be boys..

Yawn,
I find it good.Intend to let her continue icreative for primary 1. From there than monitor how is it.

Different day bec Sunday my SIL will teach her 1 to 1 basis. Mostly will stop her Yamaha end of the year.

Yawn, your children also attend Nafa art?

Liz See

Yes, both in Nafa art. Yours started since last year or just joined?

For music, I prefer individual lesson too. More focus &amp; can progress faster

Yawn,
My elder girl started last year and my 2nd girl juz started this year.

It seems all the mummies are busy preparing for the children for P1. Let us share more information if we can.

Shimmers,

oic.. here is really a good place for family. Quality n quantity time =) But need to travel out for short getaway 3-4 times a yr else will grow webs! hahaha... and yes! a car is a MUST! Infact I got my driving license here. Not only the petrol here is cheap (53cent/liter), Mead Johnson FM(Enfa series) also cheap! SG selling Enfagrow for $54(1.8kg), here only $40!

Liz,
Like you mentioned, I really pity the kids in afternoon session and have to go to student care bcos both parents are working. Actually they can sleep in later.

Preparing children for P1 is not easy, as I've no idea what she has to know. I just use the assessment book to teach her. So I just get grammar and vocab for EL. For Maths, I get that title 'Take off for P1'.

hi yawn,
Wld like to ask how and when you registered your kids at Nafa Art. I asked them once and they don't even hv waitlist.

Liz,
My daughter needs her beauty sleep every afternoon or she will throw tantrums at 6pm !!
I don't know how to train her to skip that nap.
Just praying hard that the school I put her in will be morning session from P1.

Janet

Try to shift her bed time earlier to compensate for no nap. After a while her body clock will adjust

ycys

I email them &amp; waited for 1.5 years before they finally sent me the invitation letter.
With that letter, you can enrol your kids on enrolment day, usually sometime in November

Liz See

Do you intend to try for music at Nafa?

Janet,

I try to let her skip her nap during weekend. And let her have early night. For weekday i still let her nap if not at night i can't teach her.

Thking of june holiday than i train her to skip her nap for weekday.

If i want to put her into better school, than it will be in afternoon session. Hai

Yawn, music at Nafa is out for me. I think it is very stressful lah.
happy.gif

Hi ycys,
How old is ur kid?? If he/she is 4 years old this year. Why don't u enrol he/she to the Junior creactive dance class. Then no need to wait for so long. Cos they will give priority to those children that is in their SYT (Singapore Young Talent).

Re: Nap

My boy started sch in Brunei last Jan. Sch starts @ 7.30-2.15pm(3.15pm if got CCA), hence since last yr, I 'trained' him not to nap and sent him to bed @ 7.30pm. He usually fall asleep ard 8pm. I dun want him to nap after sch cos he had difficult going to bed even @ 10pm and ended up with very cranky the next morning. This yr I let him sleep an hr later which is 8.30pm cos he has to go homework/piano practice after dinner.

Yawn Yawn,
I will adjust her sleeping time after I've registered her for P1...hopefully it is morning session, then she can continue to have her afternoon nap. Pray hard that the school I register her in is morning session from P1.

Hi
I have a highly anxiety boy who worries a lot and tends to be very afraid of new place. I extremely worry abt P1. Already at K2, he still cried and put up a strong fight not to go to school. Anybody has such issue?

Serena,
Your boy has a separation anxiety. My son was like that in Nursery/K1. When you bring him to kindergarten, you have to pass him to the teacher and leave. Tell him gently you will pick him up when school ends. Don't look back or it will be harder on him and also for you. He will cry very loudly and it's very heartache for you.

I got my hubby to send the kids to kindergarten and they did not put up a fight or cry. However, I picked them up after school. Would you like to get your hubby to send him to school instead?

hi all
i have a son also going P1 next yr. So pop in to join u all.

I saw that many of you enrolling into Rulang Pri? I plan to send my son there too, also living near Jurong point, hubby also old boy.. in a similar situation as Pocoyo.

Kinda worry cos dont know how to prepare my son for P1.. he is currently in a full day child care..hopefully it is sufficient. Might send him to Kumon for some foundation training.
wat i worry most is... he writes super slow.. always erase n write cos he wants it perfect. how to resolve this prob? anyone can help?

Joanne,
If hubby is former student, then I guess you should have no problems registering son under Phase 2A. Parents like us are getting kancheong as it approaches July.

Your son is amazingly neat...my boy's handwriting is atricious. No matter how I erased and make him write again, it is still as untidy. Maybe you can tell him gently that his handwriting is very nice and there is no need to erase as he will be wasting time doing so.
