O... i felt dizzy after reading this...
kao_dizzy.gif

I din realise it is so competitive even in neighbourhood. And when i got to know abt this, it was already after the "open registeration" period.
sad.gif

B2B3M4,
That meant now i need to depend on my luck loh... Nothing i can do...

Momof2,
i do find tien xi and berries quite expensive... my gal can speak mandrian, but jus that she doesnt really write or read or know alot of words. So, abit worry that she cant catch up... Btw, how to teach Han yu pin yin?? Really clueless...

Janet,
Where u getting ur gal to learn chinese?

Hi Ocean,

Tien Sia is cheaper as compared to Berries...
But at Tien Sia at K2 level, they will be given Chinese Spelling.
I don't think Berries have any chinese Spelling.

Able to converse in Mandarin is a good start!!!
Do encourage her to read Chinese story book. In my opinion, I personally feels that you better set a good foundation for your child... K2 is a good time to start.

Imagine, when your child start their primary school life at Pri 1... they have quite a few things to adjust.. a new environment, new classmates, teachers... there are so many new things... if you set a good foundation for your child, so when they start their Pri 1, it will be a "breeze" for them! Otherwise, they not only have to adjust their life in a total new environment and at the same time trying to learn and understand the school's works. Can be quite overwhelming!

Just my 2cents worth...

Oceans,
My gal will be starting on her tuition (more like intro to Chinese) end Dec. I've bought the wall charts to teach her but can't seem to teach her Hanyu Pinyin.

MomOf2,
I couldn't agree more with you. It's good to have a little foundation b4 they start P1. This way, they will not so 'lost' then. Will register my daughter in Phase 1 next yr and it is a SAP school. Better to start preparing her now.

MomOf2,
My son's tutor keeps telling me to speak to the kids in Mandarin, but after spending more time explaining myself, I switched back to English. But still have to try.

Hi,

I stay in Yishun and I am a PV at Chong Fu Pri. So far, I have completed about 28 hrs out of 40 hrs of PV duty. I was very kiasu. I registered myself as PV since April 08.

Ocean, if I am not wrong, they recently change the rules that RC or CCC member must serve at least 2 years before u are eligible for phase 2B. I think u better check first before joining RC or CCC.

My son is taking Chinese enrichment class at eduplus. Paid about $430+ per term. Is that considered expensive, average or cheap? Find that they teach more on conversational chinese, which is good for me as we speak english at home.

Hi

Sending my girl to Han language for chinese class in Dec. Is a preparation class for P1.
She is weak in her chinese and can't write well.

Mummies, how u all teach chinese at home especially writing. My girl stroke get all mixed up.

Hi pat n liz See
For P1 schoolers
Glad to know both of u concerned over Chinese,a primary school exam subject. As a parent in a traditional Chinese family, sad to see drop in son's P3 Chinese result. If you refer to kiasu parents website, you'll be surprised to see some P5/P6 askin whether can switch from Higher Chinese to normal Syllabus. My simple advice wld be the practical- just check out 'writing practices' essentials becos eventually kids need to write and remember the strokes and not just the pronounciation.(hanyu pinyin)

Pat,
there is no change to the admission of phase 2B under as an active community leader. However, one has to take note, the 1 year is calculated from the time the parent joins the committee and not from the time the parent joins the RC as an observer. Meaning, when a parent joins RC, he/she will be an observer. But he/she may only be asked to join the executive comm after 6mths (duration depending on the RC and how active one is in RC). The 6mths, when the parent is an observer is not counted as part of the duration serve as an active community leader. Which is why some parents may give u an idea that they have joined RC for 2 year b4 they are eligible for phase 2b.

Hi B2B3M4,

Wanted to join RC but the stupid thing is that my place is under Ang Mo Kio/Yio Chu Kang GRC even though I stay in Yishun and the Pri school that I want my son to go to is in Yishun GRC. So even if I join RC, I don't have priority to go to phase 2B for the pri school in Yishun.

Pat,
ya, i know what u mean. Sometimes, can be scary if volunteer when it is near general elections. Imagine volunteer for 1 years plus and suddenly the school u wish to put your child in is no longer under your consituency. It has happened to some of my friends.

Hi Liz,
My gal writes her strokes wrongly...most of the time I have to hold her hand to write the character several times b4 she gets it right.

Familyfirst,
Given a choice, I would switch my son to normal Chinese bcos it's much easier than Higher Chinese. Will probably do that when he goes to P5.

Hi mum & pat( north)
my apology, may not replyso oft becos login to feel the atmosphere while wait for son grade. Real disappointed over boy's P3Chinese, it gone downdrastically as P1 he used tobe top 6 in his class. p1 & p2 -focus is hanyu pinyin
Janet
Show that hard work counts, especially momto contantly revise and push child to do homework. A bit of regret now, have been Sleepless duringthis torture period .. wondering how he can do better.
janet.. i don't know for sure whether overall School Syllabus that is too much buti need to info you for Chinese, the more you practice using the language, the better you become at it and have no fear. My son P3 is actually Dec year end child, not even 9 years old, and not mature to write out proper creative writing sentence.. that's what pull him down. I guess i've to work at that area.

Hi Janet,

Thanks. Will try out ur method. Normally i ask her to write on her own and i will see. End up all mixed up.

Last night my girl told me she dunt like chinese. Have not start her P1 already told me dun't like liao.

Is it by joining RC we will have better chance of getting into the school we want?

My hubby is in the committment RC but our RC is very new, abt a year. Next year dec than will be 2 year for my hubby in RC. Will we be giving a chance to be in Phase 2b?

Familyfirst,
Hard work really counts.
My hubby coaches son in his Math & Science but didn't have time for him this year. His Maths results dropped drastically.

Liz,
I am using the same method to teach my gal but she is not as easy to teach compared to my son.
My gal will finish writing 1-2 pages of Chinese (there are dotted lines) but strokes all wrong. What's the point ?
As for RC, I'm not too sure. I was under Phase 2B for Parent Volunteer.

dear janet,liz ..
for preparatory (before child start P1, its goodto use the 'carrot' to motivate them to learnand drill more vocab and grammar.N remembertoPraise them too, a tutor taught me that overallthis will help. Otherwise ,go by what" Oceansuggests- < lazy n cheap mtd, just leave Teaching to RC group tuition to see if it works

Liz,
if your hubby has been on the executive committee for a year then your child will be eligible for Phase 2b for schools under your constituency.

Janet, when u hold ur gal to write will u ask her to speak up on the stroke, like dian, pie, na etc.

My gal teacher ask me to build up her stroke foundation and it will be easier for her when come to writing. Is like our alphabate join together to form a word.

B2B3M4, thanks for ur reply. Is a good new to us.

Btw, mummies do u buy a lot english story books for your children to read.

MPH is having sales in Expo now and 3rd to 5th dec penginu will have warehouse sale too.

Is very worth gg for penginu book sales. A lot good books at cheap price and from what i know they only hold it only every 3 year.

Liz,
I buy lots of books, english and chinese books for my kids. But the sad thing is i dun read to her.
lame.gif
Is Penginu books good? Any site to share?

Familyfirst,
Actually those RC one can be quite good. Jus that near my area, they tried to start chinese lesson, but sadly, not enough 5 kids to form a class. End up, my gal was combine another younger gal, forming nursery/K1 class. I withdraw her after the 10 session ends, as the standard was drop to show flash cards to teach simple conversational chinese and simple stroke.... So sad...
sad.gif

Pat,
I give up joining as grassroot leader liao, since i can never meet the one year deadline. It is too late to start now. Jus hope my gal can go to the neighbourhood school that i wan...
lame.gif

Btw, anyone had some simple program on how u teach ur kids? Need to plan for something to prepare my gal for P1 and another for nursey....

Hi Ocean,

You alway organise book spree right.
happy.gif

Penginu book sales, a lot good buy. Few years back, i bought a lot ladybird toddler book at $1. And DMK books too.

I find it worth gg. If mummies who will be gg maybe can consider buy some older books for your children to keep as they dunt hold it every year. Not like popular sales and MPH sales.

Liz,
Yup, I will teach her the strokes as we write. But yours truly here has to refer when it comes to the 'pie, na, heng' thing. Can't get that into my head.
embarrassed.gif
embarrassed.gif

Ocean/Familyfirst/Liz,
I have to start all over again, but this time using the same method on a child wif different character.

Liz,
Popular is always good...I get my books from Popular Expo sales. BookFest just next month. It is much better and prices are cheap.

Hi Janet,

Last year i went to popular sales too, bought a lot workbooks at cheap price. Overbuy and now still in my storeroom.
happy.gif

Mummies, have you all start introducing your children to use $ to buy things.

Liz,
Yap, have organise an join other book sprees cos like to surf ard to see got anything cheap that is worth buying.
lame.gif
And it is very addictive.... O, i love UK books better than US. I tends to overbuy too.
happy.gif

O, my gal already noe need money to buy things. But, she still dun noe the worth. For eg, she tot $1 is very BIG, and can buy lots of things.

Janet,
Start over again? How do u teach ur kid?

Liz,
I just get my gal to do a few pages at a time...very happy that she has finished all her K1 books.

Ocean,
Her teacher will give a layout of what will be covered that term. I will follow it to teach her. For eg ordinal numbers or simple addition/subtraction. Same goes for Chinese and Eng. Knowing my daughter, she doesn't really listening to the teacher in class. But her teachers told me she has improved the last term.

Hi mummies...
I need some advice.
I was able to enrol her to the one of the SAP school cos I'm the old girl from that school. In the other words I'm sure to get a place from that school. hee hee
biggrin.gif
no need to do PV also.

But the problems is transport wise is very inconvenient. No direct bus from my house need to walk ard 15 mins to reach the school. Pri 1 & 2 still ok can take school bus. But from Pri 3 onwards, sure gt CCA lah... extra lessons lah... Me FTWM sure cannot bring her back de. My mil said she can help me. But ask a old lady to travel all the way there i feel bad mah.

But the neighbourhood school in my estate here. The standard not very good..

What should i do... Cos i really do believe Primary school education is very impt. In regards to choosing a good school also...

Hi Zavier,

Your child's school is single session? If so, then most CCA will be after school in the afternoon. If your child school is double session. Then the CCA should be on Saturday.

If school is single session, check
if CCA is recommended for P1 and P2 pupils. My son started his CCA when he was P1. Anyway, most CCA is once a week (not so bad - if your mom in law offered to pick her up). But as your child grew older, and if your child is in the school team, some CCA might even require training 3 to 4 times a week.

Anyway, just get your child in the school first. I'm sure when the time comes for your child's CCA, there will be definitely ways to make arrangement.

Just my 1 cent thots.

happy.gif

MomOf2..
thanks for the reply.

the school is single session. Worse come to worse i will put her in student care then i after work rush to pick her up
kao_sad.gif

Hope she will choose a CCA that need doesn't required her to stay back too often.

Kids stress mummies more stresss....

Hi Zavier,
We share the same thoughts about choosing a CCA which doesn't require too much time staying back.
P1/2 is simple. Come P3/4 onwards, schoolwork is very much tougher and if the child stays back too often after school, there is not much time for revision.

Kids are really the ones who suffer the craziness in school, as compared to our time.

Er... some terms sound strange to me. May i know what is SAP?
blush.gif

Also, jus a quick check, for playgroup, do we need to pay school fees during school holidays in Jun and Dec?

Zavier,
It's always madness near registration. Hubby & I have to decide whether to put daughter same school as older sibling (Phase 1) or Phase 2A2 (my former school which has affiliated secondary school). It's distance vs affiliation. HEADACHE.

Hi Janet

I would go for the the option with affiliation secondary school. I guess by the time our kids' PSLE time, the point to get in good secondary school maybe will be as high as 250 and above. If you are in the affiliated primary school, you have definitely have priority to get in first. You will be surprised that even the neighbouring secondary school - some will need even a 235 scored just to get in.

I guess. We will have to think further than just the current primary school.

Just my thots.

Hi MomOf2,
Thank you for your advice. I'm thinking of this too. As it is, PSLE is getting tougher. An ex-teacher told me that if I put her in my former school, she has the option of going to the affiliated secondary school or another secondary school if her results are good. Prob will go in tis direction, but have to seriously consider with hubby next year.
happy.gif

Janet,
Thanks. Zavier had posted the link too.
happy.gif
But hor, i still dun understand. Waahahaa....
lame.gif

Zavier,
Wow... dun noe what to do.... recently my place downstair started chinese for K2. So, sent my gal there. The teacher teaching han yu pin yin liao. Teaches "a o e"... So fast, last time i only start learning it in Pri 3....

O, btw, CC called me for their meeting. Was thinking if i shld attend or not, cos my main objective is only to be eligible for 2B leh...
blush.gif

Momof2,
Wow... we need to consider this too... i was actually thinking any choice is ok as long as the school not that bad... affilated school...

There's so much for me to learn..

Serene,
Judging from this year registration, it seemed to started in Jun. i guess we need to monitor gua...

Wonder if anyone of u remember if u send ur gal/boy to those pre-nursey (3yrs), do we need to pay for Jun and Dec school fees?

Janet,
I think you better start to think which school to put her in. Sigh... Time flies very very fast de.

Oceans,
The playgroup below my block. Jun and Dec still need to pay even though is school holiday.

Really got a lot of things to learn and consider. Whether.. is the school good or not?? Travel distance?? Affilated school??

My mother told me last time when she registered me to a Pri schhol. She also never think much. Just register to the Pri school that is the nearest from our house. Now need to consider so many things. And we might be able to register them to the Pri school which we want.
kao_sad.gif

Hi Ocean,
What is it that you don't understand ?
happy.gif

Registration starts early July.

Zavier,
Proximity to the school is the most important, esp with young kids. Touchwood, you would want to reach the child asap should anything happen.
My son was knocked on the head during PE once by a basketball. His teacher called me. I brought him home asap, which was a good thing bcos he had mild fever and headache later that day.

Janet,
I agreed with you that proximity is very important. But like my case, those within the walking distance the standard not very good. So now i was in the dilemma to register her to my old school or just the neighbourhood school well do...

So many factors to consider
crazy.gif

Zavier,
We are in the same boat.
If your old school as an affiliated sec school, that is another criteria to consider.
I don't want to think of this issue yet...still in holiday mood

Measures to Further Differentiate Citizens, Permanent Residents and International Students in Education

1The Ministry of Education (MOE) will put in place measures to differentiate between Singapore Citizens (SCs) and Permanent Residents (PRs) at the Primary One (P1) Registration Exercise from 2010 onwards. School fees payable by SCs, PRs and International Students (IS) will also be further differentiated from 2011 onwards.

2Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, in a speech delivered at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Students’ Union Ministerial Forum on 15 Sep 2009, said that the Government will, over time, sharpen the differentiation between SCs, PRs and foreigners to reflect the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship.
Differentiation at the Primary One (P1) Registration Exercise

3Under the existing Primary One (P1) Registration Framework, vacancies are balloted if the number of applications exceeds the vacancies at a school during that particular registration phase. SCs and PRs are currently given one ballot slip each during the balloting exercise. Please refer to Annex A for the existing framework.

4From 2010, SCs will be given an additional ballot slip (i.e. two chances instead of one), while PRs will retain one ballot slip whenever balloting is conducted by any school during the P1 Registration Exercise. SCs will therefore have a higher chance of securing a place for their child in a school of choice when there is balloting.

5Giving Singaporeans two chances during balloting will retain the underlying principles of our existing P1 Registration Framework and provide for diversity in our schools, while simultaneously according Singaporean citizens an additional privilege.

6International Students (IS) will continue to be eligible to register after SCs and PRs are placed, at Phase 3 of the P1 Registration Exercise.
Revised Fee Framework for Permanent Residents and International Students

7To achieve a sharper differentiation by citizenship, the Government will be further increasing the fees of PRs and IS in 2011. Fees for PRs will increase by between $36.50 and $73 per month, and those for IS will increase by between $100 and $400 per month. Details of the new fee structures for PRs and IS are at Annex B.

8To minimise the impact on existing students, the increase will be spread over two years from 2011. Fees will also remain competitive compared to international and private schools, to continue to encourage PRs and IS to join our mainstream schools.

Oceans,
I think this is wonderful news for Singapore Citizens. The govt finally realized that the schooling issue is what we parents are most concerned about.

Janet,
At least I console myself now that i have 2 chance instd of 1.
happy.gif
On the other hand, i was thinkin that since i wanna go in the neighbourhood school, this may not have an impact on me....
lame.gif

Still, it is better than nothin lor.
happy.gif

Ocean,
Same here, even though my friend told me usually Phase 2A2 do not have balloting based on past history. Told hubby I'm still 50/50 'bout the school for the gal. My concern is still the distance bcos daughter is very young.

Janet,
If you r Phrase 2A2, I really dont see anything to worry wo... There is only 2 group of pple infront of you, Phrase 1 and 2A1.

So, i really dun see anything to worry, unless u are not going to the school.

Distance wise, as long as ur gal dun need to travel super long journey (mayb more than 30mins), shld b ok. Afterall, Primary school is 6 yrs of education. When they are in P1, i guess it is tough, but by P2, shld b ok.

Jus tat, mayb, the inital "start" can b tough. Endure....

For me, it is definately the nearest neighbourhood school. Luckily the school still not tat bad (at lease no bad reputation), so, i am fine. Convenience is more impt to me now.
happy.gif

Ocean,
Hubby said he will be sending her to/fro...bcos it's really far and she will be spending 1 hr on the road if taking school bus. The school will be moving to Geylang Bahru in 2011 as the present premise will be upgraded to go single-session.

Convenience and proximity is very impt...my son reaches school in just 10 min (walk). If I really want to think long term, then have to ENDURE.

Ocean,
Ya.. you are very lucky as you said the neigbourhood school still not so bad. Unlike me
sad.gif
the neighbourhood school near my house. Erh... can say their reputation not very good. So... all the parents here if they got the choice they wont let their kid study in that particular school.

Convenience and proximity is really very impt provided the neighourbood school is those not bad ones. If not, bo bian also need to travel.
