Hi all,

I'm sorry that this is going to be a long post. Many days and much thoughts have been given prior to the adopted decision which will be described at the end of the message.

As many of you may have noticed the increased number of threads created in Marketplace and Exchange corner which led us to remove many threads there in a more regular basis. We used to remove threads which are more than a month old. Now, we had to remove threads that are inactive for just more than 14 days. We also had to remove threads which have no posting for 7 days after the first message. All these are done to reduce the bandwidth consumed by the marketplace and exchange corner. At its peak, we have 60% of the forum messages coming just from marketplace and exchange corner.

We have also had more and more business owners masquerading as normal users and started threads selling items in the forum. It has also become harder to detect these fradulent threads as they are better at phrasing the messages to avoid detection. It has become very hard to distinguish the business operators from genuine sellers. We have in fact employed an additional staff just to moderate the threads in Marketplace and Exchange Corner category but the situation has not improved.

We have also spent much time responding and explaining to users abusing the forum why their accounts have been suspended. We have also received many abusive e-mails demanding us to unsuspend their accounts. All these e-mails are emotionally draining and tiring. All these have also taken our time from responding to users who genuinely require our assistance.

As some of the users suggested, we could restrict the marketplace threads to be started only by members who have more than a pre-set number of messages. After much consideration, we fear that this may not be feasible as some users may just start their threads in other categories to avoid the pre-set criteria. Alternatively, the users may just post messages just to make the number. All these have happened in forums which adopted the pre-set method. We'll end up having to monitor the forum in all categories as well and may result in more monitoring work required in the forum. This may result in a vicious cycle which can't be continued.

Instead of developing the SingaporeMotherhood.com portal further, most of our time is spent in just removing threads in the forum. We apologise but we can't go on like this. Else, we won't have the resources to continue operating SingaporeMotherhood.

As such, we'll be charging a fee of $10 for a new thread to be listed in the marketplace and exchange corner for a 7-days period. The threads can now be business in nature. The threads will be subjected to approval as inappropriate items (eg. non-authentic items, pirated materials) will not be allowed. To apply, please e-mail to [email protected]. All the current threads in Marketplace and Exchange Corner will have up to 30 June (Friday) to complete all transactions. After that, all threads will be removed. Sale, bulk purchase or any inappropriate threads listed out of marketplace and exchange corner will be removed.

We appreciate everyone's understanding and support. Please feel free to post your comments, thoughts and feedback here. Thank you.

Chin Leng.

Hi all,

Just a summary of the changes made today after the announcement above.

1. As there are mummies who would like to give away items that they no longer need, we've created a thread, Marketplace & Exchange Corner: Want To Get/ Want To Give (Free Items Only). Listing in this category is free.

2. Selling of 2nd-hand items which have been used can be listed freely too at, Marketplace & Exchange Corner: 2nd-Hand Items.

We have received concerns from users that listing fee of $10 for a 7-day period may be high and prohibitive for sale of single items. Please note that we encourage users in the forum to look for other users to combine and have a sale thread in the forum. If there are a total of 10 users in the group, each user only need to pay $1 for listing. Instead of having 10 individual and different threads in the forum, now we only have one thread. This will help to reduce clutter in the marketplace and exchange corner thread.

We've created a thread just for that.
happy.gif

Please note that we've implemented the method of $10 per listing for a 7-days period in the marketplace and exchange corner is to reduce clutter. Unlike previously, now, regardless whether you are operating a business and earning a profit, everyone can be listed in the marketplace and exchange corner now.

We really think that this method is best suited to resolve the difficulties we are having now. Thank you.

Chin Leng.

Hi all,

We would like to thank all for the feedback and comments we've received.

We've been struggling with the increase traffic generated from the threads in Marketplace and Exchange Corner. It has gotten worse as there are members who abused our resources and started running a business and earning profit by operating through the forum. It has become very difficult for us to detect them as these members have learnt to phrase their wordings very carefully. Instead of spending our time and effort in developing the portal, we've spent much time in trying to weed out these threads.

In order to reduce the number of threads, we had thought of charging a $10 fee per listing for a 7-day period. We introduced this method as we wanted to have a simple method to operate the marketplace. With this method, we wouldn't need to investigate whether someone is profiting from the forum. We also thought mummies will be consolidating their items together to share the $10 fee thereby helping to reduce the number of threads.

Please do not think that we are trying to profit from this method. If we had wanted to, the fee would be much lower. However, our intention was really to create a small but easy to overcome barrier in the marketplace which will help to reduce the number of threads.

I hope everyone understands that we have operating costs in running the portal. To ensure that the forum is fast even with large number of postings, we need to have a dedicated server. As the forum has large number of postings per day, the bandwidth consumption is also large. Imagine 2 staffs of $2.5k salary per month and a bandwidth costs of $1k per month, our operating costs will easily be ($2.5x2x13 + $1x12)=$77k and I've not included CPF and other operating costs!

For long term members, you would remember that we've spent much effort in building up the forum. Remember we had to shift the forum twice? Remember the error "Too many connections" error? We had spent months of effort to rectify it.

It was disappointing to say the least to see the reactions of some members. A member whom we had helped had taken an opportunist approach and setup a competitive forum. We are sorry but it is only common sense and right that we won't allow the promotion of other forum in our site. We have took years and effort to build our own traffic so of course we wouldn't allow anyone to leech on our traffic.

After receiving feedbacks from various members, some had felt that genuine mothers had been penalised due to members who abused the forum. Please do not misunderstand, it was never our intention to penalise any parents. As such, we are willing to try another alternative method which we were considering.

The new requirements are as follows:

1. No listing fees will be levied on genuine members. All new threads in marketplace (except for free items) can now only be created by members with 100 or more postings. Messages made in marketplace will not be considered and the 100 messages cannot be messages posted just to make the numbers. Any members found to have violated the terms will have the thread removed and account suspended immediately.

2. Businesses who wish to promote or sell their products can ONLY do so by posting in Marketplace & Exchange Corner (For Business) at a fee of $20 per 7-day period.

It'll be a manual effort in ensuring the above conditions as the forum software does not allow us to have a pre-set condition for posting. We hope everyone will help by pointing out offending threads and users to us. Please also help by volunteering as moderators.

Please feel free to give us your thoughts and comments here.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all members who have supported us throughout this period. Thank you!

Regards,
Chin Leng.

Hi all,

To those who have PM me, I'm sorry but for some reason, some of the PM did not reach me. If you would like to ensure the message is sent, please e-mail (not PM) to me at [email protected]. Thanks.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the feedbacks. It has been almost a week since we implemented the new policy of only allowing members with a minimum of 100 messages to post in the marketplace and exchange corner category. We've monitored the progress so far. It does seem like the new policy has encouraged some new members to post quickly in a short-time to hit the minimum requirement.

As we've created a category whereby business owners can promote their sales and services by paying an advertising fee and for the convenience of all genuine members, we've decided to remove the restriction. Instead, we'll be relying on our team of volunteer moderators to remove business related postings.

We would like to thank all for the support shown during this period. We hope with the removal of the minimum postings requirement, everyone will have a more enjoyable experience in the forum. Thank you.

Regards,
Chin Leng.

Hi all,

We would like to inform all users that any topic names starting with characters like "*", numbers or deem to be a deliberate attempt to place the topic at the top of the category may be removed without notification.

We would also appreciate thread starters especailly in "Marketplace and Exchange Corner" not to use words like "upz", "repost" or any attempts of making the thread appear in the search results of last 12/24 hours. The threads may be removed when such messages are posted.

We appreciate everyone's help in keeping the forum as tidy and organised as possible. Thank you.

Regards,
Chin Leng.

Hi all,

We are sorry for the sudden announcement. With immediate effect, all overseas spress must only come from proper sites with full and proper company domain names. Overseas spree from personal account, photo albums, auctions are not allowed.

It has come to our knowledge that some local sellers are actually using the overseas auction link to sell their local items. The items are not from the auction sites but from their own local stock. They are actually selling their products through BP except masquerading in the form of 'overseas sprees'.

We understand that there maybe genuine overseas sprees from the overseas auction sites but after a lengthy period of monitoring, the situation has worsen as more and more local suppliers are using this 'loophole'. We have no choice but to disallow such similar overseas sprees immediately. We are in the process of removing similar threads in the forum.

We appreciate your understanding. Thank you.

Hi all,

We would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that we strongly frown upon posting of multiple similar messages in the forum. This practice is also commonly known as spamming. Regardless if you are a new, long time member or an advertiser of the forum, appropriate actions will be taken if you spammed the forum.

Please note that it is a tediously and time-consuming manual process to remove the spam messages one-by-one. We really appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

Thank you.

Hi all,

We apologise for the long delay in getting the forum up today. There was a major corruption in the forum database which we only managed to completely fix the problem now. The likely cause of the corruption was due to a large spike in traffic today.

We'll continue to monitor the situation and an additional server order has been made. When we receive the new server, we'll perform and upgrade. When we do that, we'll inform everyone of the schedule.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and we appreciate your understanding during this period if we encounter any failure caused by traffic spike again.

Thank you.

Regards,

Hi all,

We've received feedback that some of you are not receiving email notifications from your subscribed threads or activation emails.

Please note that Yahoo! is rejecting emails sent out from our server. We would suggest switching from Yahoo! to Gmail instead. Through the years, Gmail did not have such problem that's why we are suggesting that members register with a Gmail account instead.

Thank you.

Hi all,

Activation emails, email notifications and private messages sent from SingaporeMotherhood.com to Yahoo! email accounts are either rejected or delayed. This is due to Yahoo!'s server and there isn't anything we can do.

If you are a Yahoo! email user, you can write to Yahoo! and feedback to them. Alternatively, if you would like to ensure that you continue to receive the above messages from SingaporeMoterhood.com, we would suggest updating your email addresses to Gmail instead.

Thank you.

Hi all,

We've received an email from Health Sciences Authority (HSA) notifying us of the following:

quote:

Diane35 is a medicinal product subjected to controls under the Medicines Act and Poisons Act in Singapore. The said Acts prohibit the sale of prescription-only medicines without a valid prescription or pharmacy-only item without a valid pharmacy licence. It is thus illegal to sell medicinal products in Singapore without valid licenses. The Authority will take all necessary steps to ensure that legal compliance is in place and this may include legal actions against identified offenders.

Please take note of the above. Thank you.
