Hi,
My son will be turning 4 years old in 2 months. He likes music and I would like to let him learn music. However, I do not know what kind of music, where and how to proceed.

Should I give send him for general music and let him choose the instrument later? Or do kids all start from piano by default?

If learn piano, does it mean he will at some point sit for exam, or are exams optional?

Hi peace, u may want to start ur boy off with group music classes which r available at eg. Yamaha music sch, Seimpi music sch or Cristofori music etc. just call them up to check on wads available for ur boy's age group.. Group classes are more of music appreciation.. Maybe let him try for a year bef u start him off with individual coz by den he'd have some basic foundation it'll be easier to go into more details. As for choosing instruments I'll suggest u allow him to choose wad he likes instead of jumping str8 into piano coz there're so many instruments to choose from! Exams in piano is totally optional.. Some parents want just for leisure for their children while some are more exams orientated.. It depends on how he's coping anyways.. For me my boy is just 26 mths old and I've started him out with music appreciation which he very much enjoy it.. Mainly don't kill his interested by forcing into individual right at the start unless u think he's ready for some serious biz. Hope this helps.. Good luck~

Hi. My 5yo boy told me that he is keen to learn piano and I took my boy to individual piano lesson since I am advised that he is too old to join the group lesson. Half way thru the first lesson he broke down and refuse to continue lesson. Now he dun even want to go near the piano. I dunno what has happened in the lesson between him and the teacher in the room. And I even suggested to change teacher for him, he also refuse to learn. What am I going to do? Can anyone advise?

Can someone advise me what is the average market rate for one to one piano lesson? Lesson for Grade 1.Thanks.

hi mummies,

need some advice if kids of 4 years can learn violin...isn't this considered to be strenous than learning piano because of the instrument being held consistently ?

i am not sure if i shld send my son to piano, keyboard or violin. when i ask him, he tells me piano. but i am not sure how ready he is for this. i know perhaps some trial classes may be good. but any other advice on this ? And are there any such classes near queenstown/holland/ghim moh that u know of ?

Hi blue_genie,
Have u tried talking to the teacher? There can be couple of reasons why ur boy didn't like it anymore.. It could be that he finds it interesting to see others playing but realize its too difficult afterall with all the practicing he has to do before n during lessons? Or he just feel bored sitting there for 45mins doing drills n songs repetitively? Or the teacher is demanding n strict which he feels difficult to get along for child of his age? Can be many reasons putting him off.. Guess by 5 he should be able to express his wants n don't wants quite clearly.. Suggest u talk to him n his teacher n see how it goes.. I am certain he need not do individual now u may want to try group classes to bring back his interest again..can also be more competitive in class which some children learn better in that manner.. I'm quite sure there are classes for his age coz well, he's only 5! just check around~ Don't give up..

hihi,

I am desperately needed a piano teacher to be teaching at my home near Taman Jurong.
Any mummies have teacher to recommend?
tq

Hi
I also want to find out what's the market rate for beginners (5 yr old) for the teacher to teach at my pl?
Any advice?
TIA!

Hi littlecoco,

I talked to the teacher to find out why. the teacher told me he just burst out during the class and therefore she terminated the class. I also tried talking to my boy too he told me the teacher beat his hand. So I requested to change the piano teacher and even went to the lesson with the new teacher with him as well but he simply cried and refused to take the lesson. Worst now he dun even want to go near the piano. Maybe his interest just on 3 min type and I also dare not push him further to agitate him as whenever I ask him whether he wants to learn piano he said a big no to me.

Another thing I like to share is I couldn't get back the fees I paid to the school for a term which I feel a bit heart pain cos it's not cheap as my son dun want to learn after 1st lesson so parents if you plan to let your kid to learn piano, u have to be really sure they are committed to learning.

Hi blue_genie,

I am not aware that u need to pay for an entire term for individual cos even group lessons goes on a monthly payment basis. If u paid a deposit in the beginning they will just forfeit the deposit? But guess ur boy phobic of being with the teacher alone n worried if he can't do it again the teacher will hit him so no matter u change teacher he doesn't feel secured. Maybe don't push him for now and if u really want him to stay on the track maybe u allow time for him to get over this and try a different approach of getting him back again. Like go group class where he can make friends n learn together with other children that he may feel less stressful learning alone? I've been a music instructor myself for the past 12 years realized children who are too young will probably stay longer in group n might look forward to class to ur surprise coz it's fun! Don't give up~

Hi littlecoco,
Tks for ur encouragement and advise. I will heed your advise and hopefully can get my boy back to piano.

Actually I requested a trial lesson for my boy from the school during enrollment but the school said there is no trial lesson. If really want, have to pay for the term and start learning. My niece learning from the same school also pay the school by term too, guess its their school policy bah.

hi little coco

i am proficient in piano and its real hardwork. Very tough for children. My girl has great interest but was very discouraged, even with a great teacher.

Subsequently, her teacher recommended me to send her to "Music for Young Children". This course has high accolades among her teaching friends and seniors. And it cultivates total musicianship instead of just practicing for exams.

I found it very high standard compared to other schools' offering. As I have piano background, they were able to articulate clear teaching goals, pedagogies and content milestones to me.

I am happy to know that after 3 yrs, my child is well prepared for Grade 2 ABRSM Practical exam and knowledgable up to Grade 3 theory. At least the time and money is spent learning concret things rather than just music and movement. And the process is fun and well paced rather than just mugging through.

its been 9 lessons for her, she has made tremendous progress in her understanding of music concepts and playing ability. Much much more than when she was under private lessons.

She enjoys class very much and will not sleep if she does not practise! the course is highly motivating to children and fun. The group setting encourages learning.

i am always so amazed and amused at how fun and effective they are at teaching very serious and dry music concepts. The creator is both accomplished educator and musicianship.

Go check it out. Another private tutor will not help much at this point. www.myc.com.sg.

there are videos of how they teach various segments. their IC, Sannly is very patient and helpful to explain everything. u will get a waiver of registration fees if recommended by an existing student.

pm me if u are keen about it. I will give u my girl's name.

Her brother coming 4 yrs, will join the program end of this month. Even if he doesn't pursue piano long term, he has enough knowledge and exposure to enjoy music and its arts for a life time. that's my gift to the kids.

hope it helps u. go find out more first.

Hi blue genie,

Let me share my experience with you. I have a student who has the same issue as yours. He attended a music school trial lesson and he developed a phobia. Since then, he refused to attend music lessons regardless of pte or group.

One day, her mum came to me. We arranged for a trial lesson but when the boy came, he do not know it was supposed to be a trial lesson. His mum told him that they are visiting a friend. So when he came over, we chit chat and slowly get him to the piano and voila! He agreed to take piano lessons

Hope this helps!
