Any comments on Ascension Kindergarten?

Hi workio,
Don't know full details of Ascension Kindergarten, but can tell you that there are no preschools affiliated to any primary schools.

eg. if you attend Ascension Kindergarten, it doesn't give you any 'advantage' in trying to get into St. Andrew's Pri. Likewise, if you attend Nanyang Kindergarten, it's not gonna help you get into Nanyang Pri
: )

hi all, any comment on Ascension Kindercare at Block 105 Potong Pasir? The current school that my 4 years'old is getting bad to worse.

hi all,
My son has been going to Ascension Kindergarten since his nursery. He's in K2 now. For me, I think is not bad as my son really enjoys studying in the school and he learns a lot from there, at all levels, the teacher will give the children a story book to bring home every week for them to read.
Also, recently I just read a newletter that my son brought back requesting parent to give children $2 in 10cents coin for them to bring to school on 2nd and 16 sept as the teachers will bring the children to St Andrew's primary school canteen to allow them to practice how to buy food.

Hi Sherlyn,

Story book borrowing starts on term 3 for N2 only.
Bringing to school canteen to practice how to buy food starts for K2 later term also.

How is K1 and K2?
Does your son learn a lot cademically?

I have a friend, her girl is in K1 now.
She complaint that she does not learn much, end up sign her in another enrichment class.
Her 2nd daughter is not in Ascension Kindergarten, she put her in pat school house instead.

I also feel my girl is not learning much in Ascension Kindergarten.

At N2, they are teaching no. 1 to 10, A to Z etc, only.
Some simple letter tracing and simple art and craft.

They socialise and play alot.
Also alot of holidays, parties at class time, etc.

Cheers, Zenn

hi Zenn,
My son started since N2 till now. My son is a kiasu type, he always try to finish he school work first before he plays. He teacher tells me that he is always the first one finishes his work. When other children are playing, he will not join them till he finishes his work. When he is not feeling well, he still wants to go to school because he told me school give them worksheet to do everyday. He enjoys doing those worksheets. Every friday he will bring worksheets home to do. And he always finish it within 10 mins.
For me, I personally think for 3 hours, they do not learn that much. Aprt from going to Ascension, my sons also goes to enrichment classes like Lorna Whiston and Tien Hisa.

Hi Sherlyn,

Yes more and more parents are going to enrichment classes with Kindergarten not teaching much.

My point is IF STILL need to go enrichment classes, then may NOT need to join Ascension Kindergarten with high school fee.

Any other cheap Kindergarten is enough.

Ascension Kindergarten fee is about $700 per term, total 4 terms a yr.
I find it quite costly, yet still NOT learning much.

Too bad, my girl is not those easy to adapt type, else I will most likely change her school.

Just sharing.

Cheers, Zenn

hmmm....i just enrolled my boy for N2 next year.

I visited the kindergarten twice before we decided to enroll. We spoken to the VP twice too and we feel quite comfortable. We also get to checkout the kids during school hours...

But after seeing so many comments here...hmmm...well guess will let the kiddo try first.

Hi

Ascension is offering chinese immersion programme for K1 and K2. Anybody sign up this programme for their child? Is it good? Contemplating whether to sign up their immersion programme or Berries.

Thanks.

Hi Mummies

Yes, the deposit is kept as payment for their last school term. You pay by cheque or cash.

Enrichment classes - to be fair, whether or not you are in Ascension, many parents (whether their kids are in PCF, or Pat's School) will still send their kids to enrichment classes.

maltbibi
My boy goes to Berries instead.
The immersion programme is outside of school hours. To me, it'll be quite a long day for the kid. Also, someone gotta bring lunch for him.

Mummies,
This term is my boy's last term at Ascension. They have automatically offset the school fee from the deposit.

For chinese enrichment, I send my boy to Tien Hsia cause is near my house.

Hi StyloBB and Sherlyn

Thanks for sharing. I have called Ednovation and enquired their programme. They did not offer chinese idioms and poems like what Berries do. Only teach children to recognise words. Hmm.. think I will not register my girl for this programme. Somemore my girl needs to wake up early to attend their class twice a week.

Hi All,

Just to mention, even until K1 level, there is no homework to bring home to do.

I check around with my colleagues, most of their K1 kids have homework almost everyday...they are from different kindergartens.

In PAP, at Nursey level, already have homework everyday.

In other K1, they even have spelling.
like "un, at, an" etc

So honestly I think Ascension is quite lack, academically.

Cheers,
Zenn

I have voiced out about Ascension Kindergarten in this thread since Jan 2009:
http://www.singaporemotherhood.com/forumboard/messages/353638/898691.html

I have withdrawed my girl from Ascension Kindergarten since end 2010.

There is nothing good I can share about this Ascension Kindergarten.

I am totally disgusted with the Principal, Vice Principal and teachers from Ascension Kindergarten.

It is a fake, useless and money-face school, from our experiences.

Some UNREAL and NOT true "positive" remarks make me enrolled my girl into Ascension Kindergarten.

It was my mistake to believe it at first.

Just to share, my child is in Ascension and going onto N2 next year.

I'm contemplating withdrawing her for a full day childcare and was taken back to learn that in that full day childcare at K1, they are teaching numbers 1 to 10, all 26 characters of the alphabets and sounds of it, which my girl has already learned the alphabets, sounds in N1 at ascension.

As for the numbers, I'm teaching her myself at home. So in a way, when I compare, I think AK's curiculum is better than the childcare that we visited.

I guess each have their good and bad experience to share with everyone. If this school doesnt suit my child, I would switch her to another better sch.

Thanks for above feedback, seems like it has happened quite some time ago.

I've just visited AK today & like the resources I see & the curriculum.

Anyone has kids there now & is the situation like what Bless has shared during her experience there in 2010?

Hi All,

I was very busy with moving house since last yr so I did not reply to anyone regarding this. Pardon me.

After March holiday this year, I asked my girl (K2 now), if she like her old school or the current new school. She said NEW school.

I asked her again,"Is new school better or old school better?". She said NEW school.

I asked her again, "Is English teacher in new school better or old school english teacher is better?". She said Mrs. Lee is better. (Mrs. Lee is from her new school) - Did I tell you that she changed 3 English teachers in Ascension Kindergarten when she was in K1?

I asked her again, "Is Chinese teacher in new school better or old school Chinese teacher is better?". She did not reply. I know that she doesn't like both Chinese teachers in new and old school.

I asked her why she does not like Chinese teachers. She said they always scold people in class.

My girl is more willing to express herself in new school. She is also enjoying snack time better.

Previously K1 morning session in Ascension Kindergarten, every day snack time is BREAD, only wed they get pandan cake. She is a fussy eater and HATE BREAD. End up only drink plain water, eventually i pack my own biscuits for her. Ascension Kindergarten dont even serve biscuits for K1 and K2 level.

Now in her new school, she is happy snack time eater. Morning session also. Mon-porridge, Tue-muffin, Wed-cereal, Thu-cheese bun, Fri-hard boiled egg. At least she will not miss snack in school and I dont need to pack biscuit or anything for her.

New school has already planned curriculum for the whole year. Ascension Kindergarten does not.

BTW change of principal in Ascension Kindergarten...she was formerly the Vice principal. So fake and judgemental.

Did I tell you deposit for my girl new school is $200? Ascension Kindergarten deposit is 1 term school fee $700+.
I am not talking abt registration fee.

Let me know if you have more questions.

Since my girl is more willing to talk now, I can ask her if you have any questions.

My son is also happy in same new school.
Only complain is some boys are more rough.

Last time I also got the wrong preception that Ascension Kindergarten was a good school.
Look good on outside only.
To us, it is Rotten inside, fake and money-faced, judgemental and uncaring.

Cheers,
Zenn

Hi Ryes (ryes),

my advise is Don'T compare Kindergarten curriculum with Childcare curriculum.
Its like comparing apple with orange, really.

If you want, you go compare different Kindergartens' curriculum.

I hope all parents will take good effort to choose good school for their children.

I used to think that Ascension Kindergarten which command such HIGH SCHOOL FEE will be good.
I was wrong.

There is always a CHEAPER and BETTER option!

Thanks,
Zenn

Hi zenn, care to share where is the new school? Am finding AK expensive and not much academic progress in my kid too. But I need a kindy or CC near my inlaws' place (potong pasir) as they are looking after my boy.

Hi All,

I have been planning to move house since last year and I will be moving in May this yr.

I have withdrawed my girl from Ascension Kindergarten since end 2010 when she was in K1.

If Ascension Kindergarten was good, I will let her stay all the way to K2...since my mom is staying at kallang bahru which is nearby and can fetch both my kids.

Since Ascension Kindergarten was no good for them and since I will be moving in may this year, thats why I decided to change school for her.

The new school is near to my office. Not near to Potong pasir. So no point telling you which is it. Sorry abt it.

From my experience, to choose church kindergarten:
1) It is better to go for those with 1-2 classes per level. So I also won't advise Marymount Kindergarten.

2) Ask them what topics are they teaching this term and next term for the existing children, any advance teaching material prepared?

3) Ask them to show you in black and white, not talk only. Example...like newsletter to parents should tell you the topics for English and Chinese this term...

Don't be surprise, some church kindergartens have NO acadmic plan for children at all, even for this term and next term!!!

=> To me, no plan = no success.

4) Ask abt snack time, playtime/outdoor time, library time, spelling time, extra lessons etc
=> check around the class, there may have paste the class timetable or schedule inside the classroom itself.

happy hunting.

Cheers,
Zenn

Dear mummies,

I chanced upon this thread while surfing ard for Ascension Kindercare as my son is approaching 18mths. A fellow kindy-scouter myself, I can't share any experiences w Ascension but I do have some opinions to share.

As you read abt what others have kindly posted here, do read with a pinch of salt. Sure, whatever they said truly happened, but our own emotions/perceptions cloud our expressions. (eg. Like how we regret the words we say in a fit of anger at times)

If finding a good kindy for ur kid matters to you, then take time to go a little further in taking the issues up with the school when you visit. Dont take everything per say in the posts you read.

Some interesting points I read:
1) Homework: What is the true value of it? Why compare schools on which gives n which doesn't. To me, homework is given when the task cannot be completed in class. I wld rather my son comes home without homework then I can choose how to spend the time w him. Instead of homework, wouldn't it be better for the sch to return their daily work maybe once a week so we know their progress?

2) Snack time: take it up with the sch why always bread? Maybe they hv real constraints? In any case, this is such a small issue.. No harm in packing ur own more nutrious food for ur darling kiddo.

3) Pay for optional activities: As the name suggests, it's optional!! Don't pay if you r not comfy. However, to hv the optional activities DURING curriculum time is not acceptable to me. This, I will ask the school.

4) Curriculum for the year: Yes this is necessary... But no need to be in the form of newsletter, though u can suggest. Any form in printed material is good, just so that we know what's coming ahead n also to track our kiddos progress. Btw, I dun think it's possible for there to be no planned curriculum. Do you know how tough that is for teachers to not know what to prepare??

5) Curriculum too simple: How true is it that for the WHOLE year they are just learning 1-10 n A-Z?? Could it just be a bridging syllabus at the start of year? It may interest u to know that at P1, MOE Math syllabus is 1-10 for 1st 2 weeks before moving on to other concepts involving 1-10.

Just my 2 cents worth of opinions. If I offended anyone, pls know it's not intentional. I just hope to give the school the benefit of the doubt before I find out the truth myself.

Dear mummies,

Just my humble opinion:

babyjosh:"I just hope to give the school the benefit of the doubt before I find out the truth myself."

You need to spend alot of money to give the school the benefit of the doubt.

Like I said before, I used to think that Ascension Kindergarten must be a very good school else why can they charge such high fee?
So I tried it.

After trying, my conclusion is "There is always a CHEAPER and BETTER option! "

Go ahead, find out and compare about Ascension Kindergarten $740+ per term school fee, $740+ 1 term deposit per child and expensive PE uniform without logo, before you commit.

In my humble opinion, IF all schools are same to you then all the more you also no need to spend such money.

I will be very grateful if someone wrote this in forum 2 years ago for me to see.

Good luck.

Cheers,
Zenn
