Dr HO from Mt Alvernia

Hi all, I'm seeing Dr Ho too after much raves from my gf who is also seeing him.

His charge are rather expensive. He just increased antenatal package to $1600.

I read thru all comments and it seems like most of the ladies were C Sec.
I would like to know if anyone gone thru natural birth under Dr Ho?

Hi all,
I'm a IVF case and was told by Dr Ho's clinic that they do not offer package to IVF cases.
That's not great isn't it... The costs will be so much more expensive (as it is, he is already very expensive)
It's my first pregnancy and I do want to find a good gynae but I need to be practical too...
Am thinking of Dr Kenneth Lee as an alternative as I heard he is good too and his rates are reasonable.
Sigh.... Decisions

Hi all,
I'm also with Dr. Ho. Coming to 6 months preggy now. Initially I chose him because of the rave reviews about his painless stitching skills.
At that time, I was thinking, whether I go natural delivery or C-sect in future, being stitched up & recovering painlessly is going to be a bonus...I am paranoid of pain.
As of this stage, I've more or less decided to go for elective C-sect, hasn't inform/confirm with Dr. Ho yet though.
And I do agree his charges are quite ex..so really hope those rave reviews about his painless sewing skills are really true and worth the money...lolx

I am paranoid of pain too. But I recovered well under dr ho. Don't worry, you will be fine.

Hi happy08, thanks for the assurance once again ;)

Hi joy007, after seeing your post, I went back to read up on Dr. Ho's maternity package details again...true enough IVF is not included in the package.
Maybe Dr. Ho doesn't specialise in IVF cases cos IVF cases are more vulnerable...consider high risk?

And apparently, according to my gf who recently gave birth, there is actually a vast majority of gynaes who do not offer maternity packages.
Initially I also thought having maternity package is the norm. My gf's pregnancy is conceived normally I think but her chosen gynae also does not provide any maternity package.. So it's pay-as-per-visit, quite ex too according to her and she gave birth at Mt E Novena.

For your case, since you are still in 1st tri (week 7~8 correct? I think I saw in other threads), you still have time to shop around for suitable gynaes.
I believe there are other good gynaes at Mt A as well. Just take your time to pick and choose, most importantly, find the one that makes you feel safe and comfortable.
Good luck!:)

I've been to Dr Ho previously but have decided to change gynae instead. I'm sure his skills are excellent given his years of experience and long list of patients. I just find him a little rough and abrupt (not as gentle as the other gynaes). That's obviously cos he's very confident. I just preferred someone gentler and more patient when answering my questions.

Hi mummies who are/were with Dr Ho, can I just check:

1) Does his package includes gestational diabetes test or the test is an ad-hoc charge?
I'll be taking the gestational diabetes test on my next appt + paying delivery deposit. So I want to know what's the estimate $ I'm looking at.
I just checked through his package details ytd and I did not see gestational diabetes test being mentioned in the "items included in the package".

2) When do we inform/discuss with Dr. Ho if we want to opt for elective Csect?
The delivery deposit is based on natural delivery. According to the recept, if I choose elective Csect, I just need to top up later....but like when & how to confirm?

3) General question...If I confirm want to deliver at Mt A, how do I book myself? Just inform Dr. Ho's clinic and the recept will handle?

Sorry for having many questions...TIA!:)

Just my two cents worth:

Pros
  • Dr Ho is very experienced and that's what draws many of us to his clinic in the first place. We are assured that he is able to make the right decisions fast during labour and during the delivery.
  • His stitching is supposedly one of the best.
  • His staff are generally friendly and approachable.
  • Comfortable waiting area.
  • His supplements are generally organic. Example, his calcium pills are from milk-based source.
  • He is very willing to answer your questions. So have a list of questions ready to ask. (Just don't challenge him on his decisions)
Cons

  • With his experience, his charges are on the high side. Normal consultation is charged at $100. Unscheduled consultations (called Emergency Consultation by his staff) are at $150. That is just his consultation fees... add in scans, supplements, tests... You are looking at a bill of at least $200 and above each of your consultation. We seldom pay anything below $300 for each of our visits.
  • The clinic collects a cash deposit of $3600 for his delivery charges (normal delivery, no epidural) at about 30 weeks. Any changes to the delivery (e.g. to c-sect), then you got to top up the difference on the day of the delivery.
  • His schedule is packed and the clinic operates half days on Wednesdays and Fridays. So it may be difficult to get a convenient appointment. Saturday appointments are difficult to get too.
  • He works office hours only. No way to contact him after office hours. You are expected to check into the A&E at Mount A for any complications during night times and weekends (his clinic is only open on sat mornings).
  • He may appear to be very grumpy at times. It is seldom that we see him in a good mood. However, it could be due to the high number of patients that he has to see everyday.
  • Prepare yourself for long lectures and horror stories about his patients. (The stories range from his many patients that are hospitalised and on bed rest... High chance of miscarriage if you don't listen to him, calamities that could happen if we do not listen to him. etc etc). It is definitely not good for the mother emotionally.
  • It is not easy to be offered his package, which is at $1600 and starts after 20 weeks (if not wrong, cos we were not offered his package).
  • His scans are fast. Do not expect him to let you listen to the baby's heartbeat during every scans.
  • The clinic does not accept credit cards. Only cash or NETS.
  • Don't challenge his medical opinions. He does't like patients who googled too much. His horror stories usually come after that.
  • It pays to do some research on your own before buying EVERYTHING that his clinic sells to you. We got some of our stuff they wanted to sell to us at a much cheaper price elsewhere.
  • He charges $500 for the delivery call, $250 per general call when you are in the hospital. These charges are on top of his delivery package fees. (When you are warded in the labour ward - $300, when you are delivering - $500, every time he appears in the morning to check on you - $250) For a normal delivery, that makes an additional $1300 on top of your bill.

Conclusion
If you belong to a high-risk group and willing to pay, then Dr Ho is one of the best choice.
If you are not high-risk, then you may want to reconsider.

1. The Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) is not part of his package. It's charge at $80. By the way, the exact same test is available at $8 at polyclinic.

2. You can always discuss with Dr Ho about your birth options. The clinic will then charge you according to the type of birth options.

3. You have to do your own admission for Mount Alvernia. Dr Ho's clinic does not do it for you.

Fill up the pre-admission form which is available at Mount Alvernia's website. You could also go for their hospital tour before deciding which ward you prefer. On the day of admission, you can indicate on the admission form of your preference. We managed to get the exact room that we wanted.

Dr ho delivered my no.1 in 2013 and admission was all done by his clinic. Has this changed now?

Hi, I just delivered in Sept 2016.
I delivered via csect, so clinic helped me to book the OT. For hospital admission, I did it online via Mt. A pre-admission registration.
On actual day, I had a final check up by Dr. Ho before heading to level 1 at Mt. A main building for admission procedures. Pretty straight forward...the staffs will guide you accordingly.:)

Just to share...Dr. Ho is pretty well-known in Mt. A I think.
I opted for single room at My Lady's ward and there were renovations going on, so it's pretty noisy at certain parts of the ward.
When I admitted, I was assigned a normal single ward room (Room A). After I came back out from my csect, the hospital upgraded me FOC to the family suite (it was a big room :p) to avoid the renovation noises. Think I was able to upgrade to family suite because I am Dr. Ho's patient :D.
Initially the staffs pushed me to Room B due to renovation noises, but the head nurse came over and asked the staffs if I'm Dr. Ho's patient..they said ya, then head nurse said I should be pushed to the family suite instead...:D:D:D
Of cos, I am just lucky to get the FOC upgrade, no guarantee that it will happen again.

Hi can share with me the charges for your delivery fees for single ward under Dr Ho?

@lynn1981, my total hospital bill was ~$13K (Gynae~$6.6k, Baby~$1.35k, hospital stay ~$4,7k deposit payable during admission)...Under no complication scenario.

Medisave deducted $4.4k for myself, ~$1.28k for baby.
I paid ~$3.7k deposit to Dr Ho earlier ard week 30+

Somehow I was refunded $1.5k after consolidated calculations by hospital:p so I kinda lost track how much i actually paid.

Just to add on. His emergency consultation is $150 on top of his normal consultation so total is $250. I was quite unhappy over this when i walk in to look for him for bleeding issues.
