Speech Theraphy

Hi. How much does she charge? How does it work? My son cannot pronounce his words properly and at times, i dont understand what he wants to communicate with me. He is 3 years old now. Can u tell more about the improvement you see in your child?

My girl was very late in talking, she can't talk till 4.5 yrs old. So we send her to do a ASD assessment and found she is having lauguage disorder. She start her SLT last year nov 2011. Now she can talk better, read and understand better. She is picking up her second language now in Sch. It help to speed up her development in language understanding. A speech and language therapy will help to correct a child or person on pronounce, reading and all issue about SPEECH and LANGUAGE. I saw kids going to her for pronouncing words and sound from very young to Pri. Is a one to one therapy. Abt $150 per session. But pronouncing problem can be a long term issue, if it not be corrected. U can try Kk hospital but is a long wait (can wait for six months) and slow process (3months therapy and 3 months hoilday) but much cheaper. U can pm me if u need further info.

I rec my daughter's speech therapist Lorelle Ng at Planet Learning Centre. At Hougang. About $100 per session. Initial assessment is bout $150. My gal had speech delay. I started her at 2yo, coz I dont want to wait for her to "grow out" of the phase, so I pre-empt by starting asap.

At best, it's reinforcing her speech development if she really was slightly slow at speech. At worse, she sought help early.

Now she is yakking all day, cant tell she couldnt speak a word a yr ago. praise the lord.

Just say sophie's mama rec Lorelle.

My 3yo boy is now attending once weekly sessions following polyclinic referral at KK. It was a 5-6 month wait but they have so many sessions in the lead up I learnt a lot along the way. Now he talks like a parrot, always repeating what we say. Previously he was only saying single words n using gestures to communicate. He has occupational therapy too and his fine motor skills have improved. Fees r determined by means testing. Do pm if u want to find out more.

Hi,
My girl is coming to 3yo in Oct and she still doesn't speak much.. Prefers to use gestures and 1 or 2 word answers.. She also has problem with pronunciation and 3 syllabus words.. But she has no problem in socializing or in any other areas, just speech delay..

Can I ask what exactly do they do in the speech therapy especially when my girl refuses to speak out? She most likely will stubbornly refuse to cooperate with a stranger, given that it's only a 1-1.5hr per session.. Not enough time to warm up to that person..

I heard from a few mothers from my daughter's school that most ST are quite harsh and strict. They chase them out of the room when they misbehave. I was taught to accommodate autistic children to achieve their fullest potential. Why is it so contradicting between what schools is teaching and the STs out there?

My son 7 yo has a a slight stuttering problem. He seems to be quite normal for few months.. And few months the problem looks pronounced. Will speech therapy help? Any suggestions?

hI Didi can I check with you how is lorelle?im looking for a Speech therapist for my son and the location is good.son is 30 mths and has zero vocabulary. Can u share more info with me about what they do during lesson.any massage for the mouth I toys ?

Hi Anna

For private normally now around $100-175. Weekeng normally finally book.

Hi blessed

Those stuff is to test is child have sensory issue. Some children have this issue that why need those stuff.

You can try theraphy Inc at shaw

There is 2therapist there .Joan quite nice u can try

Kkh, their slot for therapy is very limited. They can offer 3 months, every week one session and rest/stop for 3months then start again. They teach u what to do then u practise back home. I find is difficult and it need a lot of disciple for working parents. Maybe some or most parents can but not for me. As for private therapy they do it every week and u can ask and check questions etc... They monitor their progress. But u still need to do and practise with ur kids. They are on going hence u can see them progress faster.

Hi lovingmum,

It will be best to see a Speech Therapist early for stuttering as early intervention has been shown to improve outcomes.

All the best!

Helping a Child Through Play Therapy
By JANE FRAMINGHAM, PH.D.

Adults often think of child’s play as mere fun and games, or a way to fill time. Actually, imaginative and creative play assists a child’s cognitive growth and emotional adjustment. Through play, a child develops self-confidence, a positive self-image and learns to express feelings, make decisions and cope with real-life situations. As such, play can be therapeutic, helping a child deal with and overcome problems that inhibit his normal development.

How does play therapy work?

Play therapy offers a child a safe place to play out-rather than talk out-his thoughts, feelings and problems. The therapist chooses toys that encourage “fantasy play,” such as clay, sand, water, drawing materials and puppets, as well as toys that enable a child to act out real-life scenarios. The therapist builds a warm and supportive relationship with the child, thereby encouraging the child to open up through the symbolic language of play.

During a therapy session, few limits are set and the child is given complete freedom to control his play and actions. In such a protective, yet empowering environment, the child generally leads the therapist to the source of his emotional disturbance through his activity and behavior. The therapist uses developmentally appropriate techniques to help the child let go of negative or restricting feelings and develop coping mechanisms to use in real life.

Who can benefit from play therapy?

All children go through stages or an occasional emotional “crisis.” But some children have serious problems, often caused by:

Neglect

Family violence
Divorce, separation or other changes in a family situation
Severe burns or disfigurement
Chronic illness
Deafness or other physical challenges
Grief
Hospitalization
Learning disabilities or other mental challenges
Often, a child needing help displays the following traits or behaviors:

Poor academic performance
Poor relationship with peers or siblings
Passivity, withdrawal
Bedwetting after toilet training
Reading problems
Social immaturity
Speech difficulties
Refusal to speak
Preoccupation with sex
Excessive worrying, anger, sadness or anxietyPhobias
Aggressive behavior or acting out
Knowing if a child needs professional help is not always easy. Ask your family physician or a mental health professional for guidance.

Session one and beyond

During the first session, the therapist describes the treatment process, parental involvement, treatment termination and cost. Confidentially is reviewed, and parents must sign a consent to treat before therapy can begin.

The therapist talks with the parents to learn more about the problem-how long it has been present, how they have tried to deal with it, and how it affects the child’s life and family members. Then, the child is introduced to the therapist, the playroom and the therapeutic process. Usually, a child will see the play therapist two to three times a week. The length of treatment varies.

The child’s level of functioning, during the session and at home, will worsen and improve over the course of therapy. Once the child has worked through his problem and has reached a state of emotional health and a level of functioning that is appropriate for his age and stage of development, he is ready to end treatment.

As this is highly confidential, you may want to drop me a PM should you know of any children that needs help, but cannot afford professional fee.

Referral from parents / guardians / teachers are welcome.

btw my son has a very good speech therapist from Yakkety Yak. my colleague son has speech delay n later become normal after her therapy. though her office is far I also make it a pt to go every week.

Hi good try (coping),

As I'm looking for case studies, I'm not charging anything.

Elaboration on Play Therapy:
1) 45mins of therapeutic hour (the child will be exposed to all kind of play, eg. sandplay, storytelling, clay, puppets, arts, music etc)
2) the therapeutic hour is non-directive approach, led by child, the therapist follows
3) 1 case study usually take about 12 sessions depending on SDQ outcome
4) 1 session per week

If you are keen to try, please share your email address via PM to me, I'll send you more details about myself and also the therapy.

Hope to hear from you.

With the help of therapist, I do get help from friend with similar problem and books relevant to use on her. Do see improvement, but have to work hard back home aft her therapy cos it will be very slow to see result if we just send the kid to therapist once a week and expect to see great result. It each constant practising....

Try Glenn Doman program? They were the pioneer to heal brain-injured children and encourage home based learning which is also a therapy. They teach parents how to create their own program to help in speech development and even autism for children.

I am looking for a suitable speech therapy for my 3y2m old son with mild asd.
Please share me the contact and cost for a speech therapy center or therapist that any of you has engaged before.
Thanks in advance.

Hi smilezyface76, why not try KKH speech therapy? it is more affordable if you get referral from polyclinic. After a few sessions there, my son has improved a little. But it was not just the therapy sessions, it's about the enforcement at home, to practise with them. The therapist will guide you on how to play games at home.

I use this educational therapist cum Occupational therapist to help with speech therapy. My son wasn't really talking and couldn't speak in sentences but at least now he tries to participate in conversations and the sentences are appearing. He also seems top enjoy talking whereas he was struggling to express himself. still a long way to go but I am hopeful. if interested pm me and I will give my email

Hi mummies, I see a lot of chatting here regarding the Speech Therapy services. I am a Speech Therapist myself and I would like to share a few pointers when engaging a Speech Therapist.

(1) Cost of session: the average range for private sessions is averaged $150 - $180 per hour for center-based therapy. For home-based, it is $180 - $240 per hour. Some centers or therapists may charge significantly cheaper. I am very concerned because I had a child whose Speech Therapy was $50/hr and the therapist went to her house. It turned out that the therapist was a fraud. He is not a qualified Speech Therapist. He not only wasted the mum's money... he also wasted the child' time. :-(

(2) Licensing: With effect from 2013, all therapists (Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech Therapists) are regulated by the Allied Health Professional Council (AHPC). Always ask for the therapist's license as evidence of being qualified and has no bad records. If you have any feedback for a therapist, you can also approach AHPC.

(3) Areas of specialisation: Speech Therapy is a very specialised profession but yet it covers many areas. All therapists have areas which they are more passionate and better at. Do ask your Speech Therapist which group of children he/she usually works with and what his/her area of passion is. Some therapists work better with mainstream children who has purely articulation or language problems. Some therapists work better with children with high-functioning Autism while some can work better with those with severe - moderate Autism.

(4) Connection with your child: going for therapy is not like going to see a doctor. There must be a good therapeutic relationship between your child and the Speech Therapist. Why would your child want to talk/communicate/play with someone he/she does not like? Choose a Speech Therapist who can connect with your child and whom your child can connect with. From my experience, most therapeutic relationship can be built up within 6 - 8 sessions. If your child still cannot work with the therapist, then you may want to consider another one.

Hope the above is helpful for mummies who are looking to engage a Speech Therapist. :)

Hi

My son (just turned 3) said his first word when he was 2.5 years old too. But quite difficult to understand him so we brought him to Kandang Kerbau Hospital. He is seeing the speech therapist there but waitlist was quite long and can only see him once a month. 2 months ago the speech therapist said he may have apraxia! but they still can't give him more regular therapy. he is seeing a home speech therapist once a week now and the Kandang Kerbau Hospital speech therapist once a month - so far he's getting better and slowly combining 3 words though some sounds still not clear. But at least he is shouting and crying less coz now he can say more. We also thought he had autism as little speech and not much eye contact but both improved after therapy. So dont't give up!

Does anyone know of any good childcare centre that is focused on speech and language or special needs childcare?

Thanks!

My child was born in 2011 and been going for speech therapy for almost 10 months. I 1st started out with thomson pediatric centre for about 3 months before I switched to current one which is Kaleidoscope. We started off with ST and OT concurrently then slowly to ST alone. So far so good, seen improvement but still lagging his peers. Take lots of time and patience. Good luck ladies!
