Muslim Mums 2015

Salam sisters.

Im very new to this forum (and motherhood). Im one of the few ones in my circle of friends to be pregnant. I hope I can get alot of tips from ur generous sharing here :)

A lil intro: i am 18 weeks pregnant. EDD is mid feb. Im not tht fussy actually but its just a nick. Heh. Hope im not being judged on tht. :D

And I really, really need some tips on how to get some sleep at night. Because my mind refuses to shut down and the discomfort in sleeping positions doesnt help. Any kind souls to impart some advice? I would be really grateful. Many thanks in advance.

I want to go but so malas to travel there... erm can i ask u all, are u allowed to go out after maghrib?cos my mum in law said no.. so im freaked out by this superstition. Im not allowed to watch scary shows too... lol.

Salam, I just went dating with my husband last night. So... nope, no such rule for me :)

Did your MIL explain why it's not encouraged for you to go out after maghrib? I'm sure she's super concerned abt you especially if you're carrying her first grandchild.

Littleladybug, she just said its not safe.. guess its "dirty". Nah, she has 3 grandsons! Well, for me, its a first. So it made me paranoid also! Thinking of whats out ther.. jinns & all... man... lol. And now with the haze, i cant jalan in the day. Im stuck at home! Pengsan.... thanks thanks!

Salam all! @littleladybug & @Ariana, both my mothers did told me to avoid gg out at night if possible. But if we did decide to, they told me to bring something sharp, like a small knife or scissors along. My mother is very particular abt this as she say those beings like unborn child's blood. Im abit paranoid too but prevention is always better than cure. Hope this helps! :)

I had no advises of any sort from mum :/ Generally even when pregnant or not I normally avoid going out during and an hour before maghrib. I hope the below can answer your question:

Praise be to Allaah.

Yes, a number of saheeh ahaadeeth (Prophetic narrations) were narrated concerning this etiquette. For example, it is narrated from Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“When the wings of the night spread – or when evening comes – keep your children in, for the devils come out at that time. Then when part of the night has passed, let them go. And close the doors and mention the name of Allaah, for the shaytaan (devil) does not open a closed door. And tie up your waterskins and mention the name of Allaah, and cover your vessels and mention the name of Allaah, even if you only put something over them, and extinguish your lamps.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari (3280) and Muslim (2012).

Al-Nawawi included this in a chapter entitled Chapter on covering vessels, tying up waterskins, locking doors, mentioning the name of Allaah over them, extinguishing fires and lamps when going to sleep, and keeping children and livestock in after Maghrib.

Muslim (2013) also narrated from Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Do not let your animals and children go out when the sun has set, until the first part of the night is over, for the devils come out when the sun sets, until the first part of the night is over.”

Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) said concerning the first hadeeth:

“The wings of the night” refers to when night comes after the sun has set.

The words “then let them go” – Ibn al-Jawzi said: Rather there is fear for children at that hour, because the najaasah (impurity)that the shayaateen (devils) seek is usually present with them at that time, and the dhikr (remembrance of Allah) that would protect them is usually absent from children, and when the shayaateen spread out they hang on to whatever they can hang on to. Hence there is fear for children at that time.

The reason why they spread out at that time is that they are more able to move about at night than during the day, because darkness is more conducive to devil forces coming together than any other time. End quote.

Fath al-Baari, 6/341

al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

This hadeeth includes a number of types of goodness and etiquette which combine the interests of both this world and the Hereafter. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined these etiquettes which are the cause of safety from the harm of the shaytaan (devil) , and Allaah has made all of these means causes of being safe from his harm. He is not able to uncover vessels or untie waterskins or open doors or harm children or others if these means are followed. This is like what it says in the saheeh hadeeth, (authentic narration) that if a person says Bismillah when entering his house, the shaytaan (devil) says “No place to stay” i.e., we have no authority to stay overnight with these people. And if a man says when having intercourse with his wife, “O Allaah, keep the shaytaan away from us and keep the shaytaan away from what You bestow upon us (of offspring),” that will be a cause of the child being kept safe from the harm of the shaytaan. This is similar to this hadeeth, which is well known among saheeh ahaadeeth.

This hadeeth encourages us to remember Allaah in these cases and other similar situations. Our companions said: It is mustahabb (preferred) to mention the name of Allaah over everything that matters, and to praise Allaah at the beginning of everything that matters, because of the well known hasan hadeeth (sound narrations).

The words “wings of the night” is a well known phrase that refers to the darkness of the night. And it was said that it refers to when the darkness of night comes.

The words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) “Keep your children in” mean: prevent them from going out at that time.

The words “for the devils come out at that time” mean that there is the fear at this time that children may be subjected to the devils’ harm because there are so many of them at that time. And Allaah knows best. End quote.

Sharh Muslim (13/185).

The Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas was asked the following question:

In the saheeh hadeeth narrated by al-Bukhaari, it says: “When the wings of the night spread, or when evening comes, keep your children in.” Then it says: “And extinguish your lamps.” Does this command mean that it is obligatory? If it is mustahabb, what is the evidence to show that it is not obligatory?

They replied: The commands mentioned in this hadeeth are to be understood as recommendations and advice, according to most scholars, as was stated by a number of scholars, such as Ibn Muflih in al-Furoo’ (1/132), al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Baari (11/97). And Allaah knows best. End quote.

Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah (26/317)

And Allaah knows best.

I am still using my normal clothes despite being 5 months along now. I do notice that maternity clothes are so expensive :/ But if you think the item you saw is worth the quality and investment...you shold buy it! Especially if you are planning to have more than 1 child later on :D

Oh i forgot. Maternity baju, u can check Qoo10 also...

Hihi! Yup2. My little sis updated me there are afew there. But its quite bothersome as they require measurements. The price seems good though so i would definitely give it a try.

My undergarments especially, can no longer wear them as comfortably as before. on the othrhand, i guess its because baby is growing bigger insyaAllah, all of ours are growing healthily as we speak

Hey fussywifey. Measurements are ez... bust size usually... 90/100 to 110cm... then stomach area also around 100plus.. mayb 120 to 140cm. Shoulders usually i see its 40cm to 42cm. Heehee. Didnt hv a tailor measuring tape so i used a thread n those pull type measuring tape. It is kinda fun measuring n choosing online. Hv fun!

Salam everyone...

Weekends usually Im not at work = the whole household is at home.

My mum kept telling me stories of what-went-wrong for a C class or B class mum. I tried to tell her its affecting me but it seems to make her more convince to push me and hubby to get an A1 ward AND a specialist. Im not sure I want to bcos I have heard of how if there is an emergency the specialist wont attend to you if they were not on duty...

Do you ladies have any thoughts on this?
Anxious level:7/10

My ex colleague, gave birth @KK, was on subsidized rate. There wasnt any doc around, was just the mid wife n nurse. I was like "whaaaat!!" Anyway, hers was a fast delivery. I am not affected by this. Its quite stressful i understand. Shes just worried i guess.. just say "tengok la" n quickly change topic or move away. Or u can tell her that what she said was a long time ago story? Now not like that. Lol....

Hi @fussywifey choosing to go subsidised is entirely your own personal choice especially if finances is a concern. The jump of charges from subsidised to private is significant. If u can afford it by all means....else kkh subsidised is good enough...also...don't allow ANYONE to scare you with their stories. As much as there are a million scary stories there are zillions more positive ones. Cheer up!

Ariana back in the states and UK midwives are the number 1 support wing any women would want and not a doctor. A doctor is only a top concern IF there is any complications or C-Section. Sadly Singapore do not practice midwivery as much and the set back is that the doctors here are more than eager to push for medical interventions rather than natural labour...

Hi fussywifey. Was surfing the net and this site, www.99ms.com.sg not bad. Duno wat kind of baju u looking for, but hope this helps. Been to other maternity online sites, my, all so ex!! Or alternatively, u can check singapore.yalwa.sg/Maternity-Wear/70412. Hope this helps!

Salam ladies, are there any good Islamic books for me to read up on with regards to having a smooth pregnancy? Apart from reading the Quran everyday, I think I gotta read more.

Personally, the Quran is everything. Wow i can only read the English Quran. My first year in Islam. My quran course didnt go well. Im a slow learner. Still looking ard for a tuition teacher. Haha.

Hi Ariana, what do you mean it's your first year in Islam? Did you recently convert? I agree that the Quran is everything but we can also supplement ourselves with other sources of knowledge.

Yes. Im a convert. True. But if u talking about delivery then im not sure. Im currently reading The Muslim Reader(by darul arqam), Vizier(subscribe). If u keen, u can watch youtube omar series by mbc group. With english subtitles, about Omar n Muhd(s.a.w). Reliable source. U can also check out youtube Darul arqam, they hv some short videos. Or u can visit darul arqam itself. They hv many many books at the bookshop.

Oh Alhamdulillah, welcome to Islam. My apologies, sister... I am not new to Islam but new to pregnancy and the impending motherhood. Hence, was wondering if the ladies here could recommend some books on this topic. And yup, I've watched those videos you mentioned - I particularly liked the Umar videos! Thanks for your reply. Appreciate it much.
