2001 - Looking for good Chinese enrichment class for P1 boy

Yvonne, mhlg,

how was ur child's standard when he join StoryIsland? My girl, going to P1 is quite weak in Chinese, forget chinese character easily....I din send her to any enrichment class before...

She doesn't like chinese either...

Hi Fion/Adeline:

I am not so sure the latest prices for Berries cos I have switched my kids to home tuition since last year.

Whether tuition centre or home tuition really depends on the child. If they are very dependent and need individual attention and close guidance, classes may not do them much help.

I feel classes will be good for young kids when they are young to give them exposures. When they are older, I prefer 1 to 1 tuition which is more exam oriented and syllabus focused.

Mrs Ee,

Thanks for your advice, I agreed with you it's all depend on the child. By the way, may I know, how much do you pay for 1-1 tuition? This is my first time to get 1-1 tutor, have no idea what's the market price now. TIA

Hi Fion,

The rate depends on the experience & qualification of the tutors.
Last time ever tried those partime tutors who teaches all subjects. They have about 3-5yrs experience, charging around $25 per hr. I feel for lower primary still ok, but upper primary onwards I switch to 1 tutor for 1 subject.

Currently I'm paying 200+ for once a week session by full time tutors who specialised in 1 subject. Works out to around $30-$35 per hr.

Hi Mrs ee,

Thanks for your info.

Currently I enquiry one, she's teaching Math/Eng/Science but too bad she can't teach Higher Chinese and she's a MOE teacher and decided to change from full-time teaching to full-time tutor. She's charging $40 per hr. Consider expensive?

Hi Fion,

MOE teacher rate is usually about $40 per hour.

Actually you need tutor for what subjects?

I can reccomend my son's tutor if you need someone who specialised in Maths & Higher Chinese.

Hi Mrs Ee,

Actually I need 2 tutors who specialised in Eng and the other is Higher Chinese but for HC I'm still waiting for the tutor reply which you've recommended me. For Eng tutor I'm still looking as he's quite weak at the compre area. Any recommendation? So far how's ur son's results after engage him a tutor?

Hi Fion,

For my son, he is good in English & Science so only tuition Maths & Chinese.

The tutor whom I recommend is my daughter's tutor. She teaches languages but specialised in Chinese.

If your son main problem is Chinese but slightly weak in English, why dont you approach her for English as well?

I would say that an experienced tutor can target at my kids weaknesses better.

Hi Fion,
So far, my son had tuition for Chinese only. It is a 1-1 tuition at $40 per hr. His Maths is good but Eng not so. I'm trying out Kip McGrath during this holiday to see if they are good. Another choice for Eng class is Literacy Circle at Marine Parade Central - by an ang moh.

Hi Mrs Ee,
Thanks for yr advice. My son tends to have his way during the 1-1 home tuition. Perhaps having class outside is better for him, preferably in a small group where there's still some attention for the individuals.

Hi Adeline,

My son is like yours. He is good in Maths but for languages although he passed but need lots of attention and practice. May I ask u, since u got 1-1 tutor for his chinese, any improvement?

Hi Mrs Ee,

Thanks for your advice

Hi Fion,

Like I mentioned to Mrs Ee previously that for 1-1 tuition, he tends to have his way because he is in his comfort zone. The tutor needs to coax him occasionally to do some writing. So there are pros and cons for 1-1 tuition.

For next year, I'll continue with the 1-1 tuition but add a group tuition to compliment the other. I'll try this way for the 1st term to see if there's any improvement, or otherwise.

As for English, I believe reading plays a very big part in Vocabulary, Spelling, Grammer, Compre & Compo. In addition, doing assessments will help to correct whatever mistakes they have in the language. I'm not sure how a tutor teaches English but it may be similar to what we can do at home.

After all that is said, I will want to send him to a tuition class as it is easier to get him to do some assessments than for me to push him to do any such work at all. I have to out-source this responsibility because my son will refuse to do my assessments. He'll complain and make a big fuse about it. So no choice.....

Hi Adeline,

Yap, I agreed with you thru reading able to help him in his Vocab/Grammer/Compre & Compo. I've been asking him to read every nite before he goes to bed regardless of Eng/Mandarin story books, but don't see any improvement leh...

Hi

Personally I think Berries is over rated ! I send my 3 boys there for abt a year now. I don't see much improvement at all n I'm thinking of pulling all 3 boys out soon. They Hv told me they Hv given up on teaching my 3rd boy cos according to them he still cannot recognize simple Chinese words at P1 !! But I told them tats y he's there n for abt a year for tat matter !! Today they told me to look for a pte tutor for my no 3 son. So there !! Tats coming from a so called established tuiton centre !! I'm still very mad !!!

Hi Fion,

Long time no write. How was the school holidays? Did you managed to get your son the 1-1 home tutor (recommended by Mrs Ee)?

I enrolled my son in the Kip McGrath English Enrichment Class in Dec and he doesn't mind going, so I let him continue the class for this year. Not sure if there's any improvement. I'll get to know only after his CA1 in mid-Feb.

As for Chinese, I enrolled him in Tien Hsia Holiday Enrichment Class which prepared him for Chapter 1 & 2 in advance. As there is no vacancy for 2010, I had no choice but to enrol him into Hua Education at Parkway Centre. Now he has twice-a-week of the 1-1 home tuition and once-a-week at Hua Education. Hopefully these will help him to buck up soon as CA1 is just next month.

:p

Hi Evelyn,

Wow! That's not right for an enrichment centre to tell you that they have given up on your 3rd son. It is suppose to be their job!!!!

My son went to Berries at Mountbatten for a trial lesson. It seems ok but he doesn't like it because he has a friend in that class and was afraid that his friend will laugh at him when he speak wrongly in Chinese.

I've just came across another one called Chapter-One. Has anyone heard of it? The feedback written by their students' parents seemed good.

Hi Evelyn,

That's really bad that they told you this way. They shouldn't give up on your son, they should find ways to solve the problems. Did you talk to the centre principle or the person-in-charge? Don't get mad, perhaps you may try Tien Hisa.

Hi Evelyn,

My son is in Berries too, since Nursery. He is now in K2. He can't converse well in Chinese ('cos we seldom speak it at home), but his reading skills are very good - he can remember and read many Chinese characters.

This takes some effort from the Berries teachers as well as from me. He has to read the Berries chapter for the week, every night, until his next class, where he will read for the teacher. If you are not doing that with your sons, I would strongly encourage you to do so. Usually my son can remember the new words by the third night. Initially, your kids might be reading from memory (they remember the entire sentences) - but that is perfectly alright, as they will begin to recognize the words as time goes on.

With kids, it's always about re-inforcing what they learn in school, at home. Depending on the teachers is not enough. Kids need constant reminders and contact with the subjects.

hi, my P3 girl has been with berris since P1. She has problem writing composition and she also have problem converse in Chinese. She hates Chinese but doesnt mind Berris becos she knows that she has to do something to improve her grade. thinking of getting her a tutor ... any good and cheap chinese tutor ?

Anyone check out on 识字千句文. Seems quite interesting and can learn a lot of chinese word within a short period of time.

Using CD and word, combination with games too.
Anyone staying near choa chu kang? Just call the teacher whom can do the 识字千句文 and willing to do group tuition on this. I think is too bored to do individual tuition on this.

My gal is currently P1 and boy in P3. Thinking of letting both of them do home group tuition.

Pls email me at [email protected]
