Advice needed. Mindchamps or Schichida method?

Hi fellow mums (n dads)

I don't know abt you but the number of enrichment and brain training programs out there is quite crazy!

And from what i've been told by friends n colleagues, many of them are v bottomline driven. of course that's understandable, but i want my child to go to a school that genuinely cares for the kids and nurtures them. Not just all abt $$.

i was considering enrichment at mindchamps but had 2nd thoughts after hearing some fdback from a friend's sister abt how rigid they can be n how u keep paying n paying for stuff. They also advertise so aggresively.

Money is not the main issue. I just feel more comfortable when a school's motivation is more abt passion for kids and for education. Not when it's run too much like a biz.

Anyway thats just my thots. Now my boy is just attending nursery, music n swimming lessons. Will prob send for ch enrichment too, n end at that. Just keep it simple!

Hi

Anyone out there tried to put their kid on the mindchamp course called "springboard".

I am very keen to put my P4 girl for this programme. Please advise and tell me more.

Yinnie, I agree with you about the commercial aspects of the enrichment classes these days. I will be so mindful if the enrichment centre has a very nicely decorated venue at premium location and advertising aggressively. All these cost money, so it must come from our school fees. Hard to imagine how much left to employ good teachers and plan good curriculum and get resources to teach!

I feel it is most important that the teachers are passionate about teaching and coaching our little kids to improve, it has a good programme and our kids love the classes. I also like small class size, ideally under 6 kids per teacher. I have bad feelings about big commercialised names.

i know now there is Mindchamps Reading prog for preschoolers--3 to 6 years old. Ay City Square Mall. Saw it that day when I went there for lunch. They are having "Peek@Us" Day on 4 Sep, I think. :p Forgot.

I signed up for free 45mins session. They told me usually it's at 2hr per week. Well no harm let my gal try.

Hi, I am new member, was searching for enrichment program and stumble upon this tread.

Have you heard about BLIND FOLD READING?

Recently I sent my second child to this BLIND FOLD READING or MID BRAIN ACTIVATION program.
This is the latest Brain Training Program in the market.
This is a 2 days program.
With the midbrain activated, the child, besides able to read blind folded, he has a more balanced use of her left and right brain. This improves his concentration, memory and creativity. Any talents he has, can be unleashed multiple folds (be it academic, music, sports, etc). He is also emotionally more stable with a balance character.
My son is in Pri 5, the reason I sent him to this program is because I want to prepare him for his PSLE next year.
I was not keen to send him to mindchamps cos my eldest son went when he was in Pri 6 and we don't find it fantastic.

My Second son is very reserve, not enthusiastic to participate in any activity.
He prefers to just hold a book and read the whole day which worries me a lot as he is very anti- social.

After the activation, my son is a change person.
He became very cheerful, more active and very willing to participate.

Even his academic has show tremendous improvement.
Example, his Chinese, which usually the half a day to memorize 听写。Now, within an hour he is able to memorize almost 80%.

Besides, he has photographic memory and concentration has improved.
Even his teachers notice a change in him.
His recent CAs have also shown a great leap.

I would suggest and recommend to parents who are concern about their child's development to consider this program.
I have sent my eldest son to both Mindchamps and shichida, but this Mid Brian Activation is even better.

This Program is only suitable for children between 5 - 12 years.
if you need more info, you may PM me privately.

Hi Wab Mom, I tried to pm you but the system says u do not accept pm, could you pls advise where is this program that u mentioned? Thanks.

Hi,
Can any parents who sent their secondary school kids to mindchamps enrichment please share their experience. I send my daugther when she was in secondary 1. At first I find that they are good because my daugther kept saiding she enjoyed the classes and was cheerful after lessons. But now one year later, I find that I could have done my daugther a disservice by sending her to MC. She only wants to listen to good comments. Even when she scored 43 to 46 marks for maths, a simple statement such as " You need to work harder to get at least a passing grade" set her crying that i judge her and passed negative comments. I know mindchamps use positive words such as GOOD JOB! WELL DONE! EXCELLENT.... I felt that all these shallow praising affects my daughter. She refused to face the real world. Maybe MC training is not meant for every kid.I am not putting MC down, the result could be the same if i send my daugther to Adam Khoo or other motivational camp. So, parents who are thinking of sending your child to motivation camp, do your own assessment of your child first before signing for the course. My sister use the reward method on her son and it serves her well. I am still trying to figure out what works for my daughter..
Thank you for reading.

The mid brain activation program seems very interesting... 5 months have past, wonder if any mummy here tried this yet?

Angela, can you give us more details on the 2-day program and the cost?

I sent my boy to MC last year when he was in P1 upon the strong recommendation of a learning coach. The whole program was 9 months, and set us back by $3,000.

The results?

Nothing discernible... I think the most we got out of it was Spelling Secrets. My son hated the program and it was a pain to drag him there every week.

If you're planning to enrol your kids, do think if it would be useful for your kid. May not meet every kids' needs.

Schichida method is to work on right brain training for kids below 6 (I think ), with weekly lesson and daily activities to do at home. This is good as most people are left brained, if we can help our kids to develop their right brain, they will grow up having both the power of left and right brain.

Mindchamps main focus is on study skill. With the right skill to study will definitely improve the effectiveness of their time spend on their school work and therefore more time for other activation which interest the kids.

Ernest Wong's & Adam Khoo's programs are both motivational program with some study skill as well.
Able to self motivate and have a champion mindset are important life skill. And I believe both Ernest Wong and Adam Khoo programs deliver that very well.

I send my boy (10 years old) to mid brain activation program instead, the reason is simple, he is too old to go to Schichida to train his right brain. The mid brain activation program enable my son to "wake up" his mid brain and allowing him to better control both his left and right brain. My son has been doing well in his study except his Chinese, which is his weakest link. He use to spend about a day to learn his Chinese Spelling and now he spend 20 mins. I find the investment worth every single cent.

Now that my son is mid brain activated, the next step will be to motivate him further in 1 of the motivation program and also learn effective study skill.

My reasoning is this:
Having his mid brain activated is like upgrading his operating system, kind of like upgrading from Window 95 to Window 7.
And attending other motivational and study skill program is like upgrading the application software. Like upgrading from Office 97 to Office 2010.
Office 2010 can't run on Win95, therefore in order to benefit from Office 2010, it is a must to first upgrade from Win95 to Win 2010.
Hence I choose to first upgrade my son OS by activating his mid brain.

i saw that midbrain activation is being mentioned in this thread. i personally have seen my colleagues son and daughter went through the training. i even attended their graduation.(i am really amazed by it, seriously) their parents only have positive raves about the program. i think they hold regular previews so you might want to go attend one of the preview. my colleague is involve as one of the helper (after she send her son there, she wanted to help and share). so if you are keen and would like more information maybe you can drop me a PM and i will let her know.

Hi Desmond,

Thanks for your private message.

I've done research in the past on the neuro aspects of both left and right brain. It's a fact that there are interactions between left and right brain all these while and anatomically, there isn't a 3rd brain for humans.

Would like to know more scientific info about how midbrain activation works, best would be published literature and preferably peer reviewed.

hi TG, i am only about to share what i have seen since i have not personally been through.

the midbrain activation program is only for 6-12yo( 13-15yo has to be accessed before enrollment)for what i know if your kids is younger than 6 yo, shichida/mindchamps will be the one to go to.
the program is over 1 weekend (2 days) where classes start at 8/8.30am and end at 5pm (if i remember correctly).
The parent will have to attend a workshop on the 2nd day to learn some activities that you can carry out with your kids for the first 30 days for 15 mins each day. (my colleagues say they did not do that as they have no time. despite they tried) these activities is so-called to "firm" up the midbrain.

you can look up information for Shichida method and midbrain activation is heavily mentions in his article. There are research articles around citing this so just do a google. (i did a search before as i too am skeptical about it. also, i do wonder if there is any after effects.)

i know this is kinda out of this world since the way we are brought up is not to believe anything out of the norm and unexplainable. but, if you have the time, go and take a look with an open mind. Go to places like mindchamps, shichida, midbrain and etc. I am always going around to see the positivity in the atmosphere.

Perhaps MindChamps is not for every child but for mine and three of my friends', so far we have no complaints. In fact, I think MindChamps is doing an excellent job!

I attended a session, the speaker (Peter) mentioned 100% improve by a grade if not full refund. After I enrolled, the letter indicated that it is PSLE Success program DOES NOT HAVE the PSLE Success Guarantee. That means that the 100% gurantee if not fully refund session is so called had been fully taken..... Then why speak/talk like real...BTW, had started to pay (P n P) just hope that my kid gains someting out from it. 20 sessions cause me about $3500...hope...and...wish....and...and... I have the feeling of cheated/sad/sale talk...but who asked for it...partly I myself to #$%. JUST hopes things go in the good way...hope and hope

As mentioned by parents here, mindchamps focus on study techniques. I think no matter how wonderful the program us, if the kid refuses to learn, there is really nothing we can go about it. I have seen and sit through the trial lesson and personally find it amazing. Also the parenting session is interesting and as many parents that attended, they really agree with what was being shared.

Just attended the Mindchamp's workshop in TPY yesterday.

I am amaze how the kids can recall the 30 new words (in sequence) within 2 hours, at end of the workshop. The speaker, Jason gives a good review on the program.

I am shocked by 2 boys (sec 2 & Pri 5) gives their reply that they do not like to study, at the beginning. But in the end, they also managed to recall all 30 (difficult words and meaning) at end of workshop.

I hope my boys (now 7 and 2.5yo) do not come to have this mindset of "dun like to study"...the reason for the negative view on studying is, which I agree with the speaker is...LIFE IS TOO GOOD for our kids.

In the end I sign up the "Sparkle" prog for my 7yo and I can read prog for my 2.5yo.

I like to see how this prog will make a difference in their lives. My 7yo was exposed to Shichida & Glen Doman method before. It is good in making him more creative, have good memory and more right brainier, but they lack the part about instilling good mindset...which is very important.

Mindchamp's goal is get the kids internally motivated and achieve their goals. Which I agree should be the right way of learning. No point if you are just plain smart, right? i am tired of nagging at my son and say to them "this is for your own good, my boy."

Will share more after my sons complete the class next year.

Oh...one more thing...parents must also have good mindset and set example and able to control our kids.

hi all,

can mummies wif kids in mindchamp pre school share more about their childcare. do you still send yr kids to other language and math enrichment?

thanks!

My daughter Isabelle has been in MindChamps Preschool (TPY) since she was 2 years old. She is now 6 years and currently in the K2 level. Isabelle has benefited a lot in the area of social-emotional development. She is more confident and outspoken, ever-ready to share her thoughts and views on things around her. She loves being in school with all the loving teachers and cheery classmates. I would like to specially mention Isabelle’s Chinese teacher – Xiaoyan LaoShi who has definitely instill a love for the chinese language in Isabelle.
