The Little Adventurer of SCO 2 – Who is Singing in the Bamboo Grove?
In this fun-filled yet educational concert, Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO) Associate Conductor Quek Ling Kiong (known as “Mr Quek” in this role) will once again be a hunter and lead the little audience to the bamboo grove! While discovering the mysteries in the bamboo grove, Mr Quekwill introduce the main families of Chinese wind instruments to the children such as the bamboo family, reed family and the extraordinary family. Tointroduce the bamboo family, pieces such as Qian Zhao Xi’s 'Primitive Hunting Scene' will be played with the gudi (bone flute) and the SCO. Next, the delightful double dizi concerto – 'Grasshopper Fooling with Rooster' – will feature the northern bamboo flute bangdi and southern bamboo flute qudiwhere these two instruments act as an analogy between the determined rooster and the nimble grasshopper, in a scene fooling with each other. As we progress to the next stop in the bamboo grove, Mr Quek will introduce the reed family including the sheng and suona with repertoires such as Nasreddin’s Medley and The Little Pony showcasing the respective instruments. Lastly, Mr Quek will also share a variety of wind instruments that are not part of a standard Chinese orchestra such as xun, bawu, xiao, hulusi and gongdi. Ticket Price: $11, from SISTIC

SSO Concerts for Children: Beethoven Lives Upstairs
Part of the SSO’s Concerts for Children series, this production features Chicago-based performance troupe Classical Kids Live! and their story about a young boy who lives below the deaf composing giant. Led by conductor Darrell Ang, this features a lively exchange of letters between young Christoph and his uncle. The subject is the "madman" who has moved intothe upstairs apartment of Christoph's Vienna home. Through a touching correspondence dramatically underscored with the composer's most beautiful excerpts, Christoph comes to understand the genius of Beethoven, the beauty of his music, and the torment of his deafness. Audiences are captivated by more than 25 excerpts of the master's music, including the Moonlight Sonata, Für Elise, and the great Fifth and Ninth Symphonies. Each concert lasts one hour, and is suitable for children between ages four and 14. Tickets: $20/$30 at SISTIC.

Come 20 May 2012, the Padang will play host to happy feet, all 5,000 of them, as children from two to 12 years of age play out their Usain Bolt dreams on its lush green grounds. Yes, the Cold Storage Kids Runis back! There’s a brand new category this year, the Bouncy Yellow Dash,which will see 20 boys and 20 girls between 11 and 12 years old taking part in a challenge consisting of squats and a vertical jump test on top of a 1.6km race to test their all-round fitness. The Padang will also be turned into a carnival with games and activities for participants and the public to enjoy.
